Metro Commits to Increasing Riders’ Confidence

Metro officials this week said they plan a rapid
implementation of a list of safety recommendations laid out
by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) during
an hours-long symposium Monday in an effort to reform the
troubled rail system.
Concerns about Metro’s safety came to a head after the
horrific June 2009 train collision that claimed the lives of nine
Metro officials said they plan to confront riders’ safety
concerns by replacing aging rail cars over the next six or

circuit caused the crash, and that Metro’s poor safety culture
and ineffective safety oversight had likewise been contributing

But Metro officials said following this week’s lengthy

agency’s suggestions, including replacing the antiquated 1000
series rail cars involved in the crash and a revising the agency’s
mission statement.

AFSCME Elects Black Secretary-Treasurer
Lee Saunders has been sworn in as the International
Secretary-Treasurer of the American Federation of State, County
and Municipal Employees
(AFSCME), AFL-CIO. The
position makes him one of
the highest-ranking African
Americans in the American labor
movement. Representing 1.6
million public service workers,
AFSCME is one of the nation’s
largest labor unions.
The Cleveland native said he
will use his position to “stand up
for the dignity of all work and
all working people.”
“Throughout our history,
this has been what we do. We
come together in support of
those whose names may never

Saunders has managed numerous political and legislative
operations in the American labor movement. He also supervised

‘Black Enterprise’ Prepares for 40th Anniversary Celebration
Black Enterprise, a publication focusing on wealth-building
and business management for African Americans, recently
announced plans for the brand’s 40th anniversary celebration. The Bill Cosby Calls for End to Death Hoaxes
events will kick off with a 40th anniversary collector’s edition of
the magazine featuring stories highlighting the relevance of the
brand and the 40 most influential leaders in business.
Other highlights will include the Black Enterprise/Pepsi Golf
and Tennis Challenge, the launch of a Black Enterprise iPad
app and the return of the “Black Enterprise Business Report” in
October.
Founded in 1970 by Earl G. Graves Sr., Black Enterprise is
currently led by CEO Earl “Butch” Graves Jr.
Black Accountants Group Names New Leader
Calvin Harris Jr. was recently elected the 24th national
president and CEO of the National Association of Black
Accountants (NABA). NABA, a 501 c(3) nonprofit, is the
leading association for African Americans and minorities in the
accounting, audit, finance, information technology, tax, and other
business related fields. Harris’s two-year term began July 1.
Harris will lead NABA with the platform “Leaders in a
Connected World” and encourages organizations to utilize new
tools like Facebook and Twitter to interact. “Organizations
that thrive will remember the past and accept both existing and
newer tools of collaboration,” Harris said in a press statement.
“As leaders in a connected world, NABA will embrace our past,
present and future relationships, including the connected member
and stakeholder.”
Harris is currently the chief financial officer for the Aeras
Global TB Vaccine Foundation, a
non-profit “product development
partnership” in Rockville, Md.,
with a satellite office in Cape Town,
South Africa. His career has focused
extensively on non-profit organizations
and includes prior senior management
roles at the United Nations Foundation,
NeighborWorks America, Council for
Excellence in Government and Morgan
State University. Harris is a graduate of

A press release issued by the
Newberry County Sheriff’s Office reveals what Sheriff James Lee
Foster called “horrific details” of the murder. Police believe Hill
died from a single gunshot wound to the head. However, Collins
him away from the residence with his truck for over 10 miles. His
body was found alongside the road by a passing motorist.
Collins was charged with murder, desecration of a body and
possession of a firearm during a violent crime.
Comedian Bill Cosby is not laughing at Internet rumors saying
he’s dead and wants them to stop. The rumors circulated after
his supposed death was a “trending” topic Aug. 2 on the social
networking site Twitter. He tweeted his frustrations and also called
CNN’s “Larry King Live” and expressed his disdain.
“I don’t want this person, or whatever, I don’t want them to do
this anymore,” he told Kyra Phillips, who was filling in for King
as host. “It’s no longer fun.”
The incident marks the fourth death hoax to target Cosby; the
last one occurred in February. While he had spoken out about the
rumors in the past, he said this time was different.
The 73-year-old Cosby said his daughter called his house and
told him that people were calling her asking if the rumors were
true.
Cosby is among many celebrities that have been victimized by
Internet death hoaxes. According to FOX News, rumors of talk
show icon Oprah Winfrey’s death surfaced on the Internet in 2009,
as claims circulated that Winfrey was found dead in her Chicago
home.

recently released two reports
that revealed the unbalanced
college graduation rates
within America’s public and
private institutions.
“Big Gaps: Small

found that while 57 percent
of all students who enroll
in the nation’s institutions
earn diplomas within six
years, the graduation rates of
different groups of students
are strikingly different.
A similar report was also
released focusing on Hispanic
graduation gaps.
The reports noted that
nationally, 60 percent of
Whites, 49 percent of Latinos
and 40 percent of African
Americans that start college
hold bachelor’s degrees six
years later.
“These averages mask
important differences
between institutions,” Kati

percent of Americans under
the age of 18 are people of
color. By 2050, communities
of color are slated to
become the majority group
in America. The continued
economic vitality of our
nation will depend on their
contributions, and they must
be healthy enough to lead.
The time to begin
improving the communities
where people of color live is
now. Our children’s future
depends on it.

District Mulls Medical Marijuana Regulations, Discounts

When it comes to the
distribution of medical
marijuana in the nation’s
capital, qualified residents
who least can afford it could
be in line for a break, as
the District’s new mandate
will include a provision for
distributing the drug at a lower
rate for low-income patients.
But according to Dan
Riffle, a legislative analyst for
the District-based Marijuana
Project, patients that could
benefit from the law that
went into effect in July have
already had to wait 12 years.
He said in a recently released
statement by the Project that
as a result of the discount not
being allowed until at least
January 2011, many residents
suffering from chronic

use of medical marijuana. But
prior to the City Council’s
approval of the regulations,
the public will have an
opportunity to express its
sentiments.
Riffle added that while
the proposed regulations are
“detailed and comprehensive”
there are several issues that
need to be addressed before
they meet final approval.
“For example, the
draft regulations call for
applications from prospective
dispensary or cultivation
center owners to be accepted
on a first-come, first-serve
basis, which could lead to
the first applicants being
awarded licenses, rather
than the best applicants,”
Riffle said. “Also, the lack
of a competitive, scored
application process—such
as those utilized in Maine
and other medical marijuana
jurisdictions—raises
questions of transparency and
fairness.”

fundamentals of his campaign in an interview on “Larry King
Live” on Aug. 5.
“After [the earthquake of] Jan. 12, over 50 percent of the
population is a youth population and we’ve suffered for over
200 years,” Jean said. “Now that our country has toppled,
there’s a chance to rebuild from the bottom on up. Right now
there’s a chance to bring real education to the schools, an
infrastructure, security and proper jobs.”
According to a press release issued by Jean’s campaign,
his platform will also focus on financing initiatives to promote
agriculture and entrepreneurship.
Shawnta Watson Walcott, a pollster and pundit who
conducted the 2005 presidential election poll in Haiti on
behalf of the National Organization for the Advancement of
Haitians, said Jean is indeed a viable candidate among political
heavyweights despite his lack of political experience.
“Wyclef Jean’s world-class notoriety, native kinship and
youthful energy are clearly a combination that distinguishes
him from others in the race,” said Walcott. “And with a drastic
shift in the demographic of likely voters [nearly half of the
population of voters could be between the ages of 18-29] his
election bid seems to be both timely and fortuitous.”
Walcott, who also served as political director for the
Rainbow PUSH Coalition, said the country’s elections have
been of little significance for many Haitians since the Jan.
12 earthquake, as reconstructing the capital’s infrastructure
remains a major concern.
Many Haitian-Americans have maintained avid support for
Jean throughout the earthquake’s aftermath and tout his work
with Yéle Haiti, which helped place 10,000 children in primary
schools and raised $9 million to support relief efforts.
Jean stepped down as chairman of the organization
hours before announcing his presidential bid. And while
the group has faced scrutiny for financial inconsistencies,
Jean said he learned “what works – and what doesn’t” in his
experience as chairman. However, court documents revealed
by thesmokinggun.com show Jean and his wife, New York-
based fashion designer Marie Claudinette, owe over $5 million
in federal IRS and state tax liens on property owned in New
Jersey, Florida and New York.
Still, the presidential candidate maintains steadfast support
among many Haitians for his work following the January
earthquake.
“He’s Haitian and he was born in Haiti; of course he
wants to see better for our country. He’s not trying to profit,”
Washington, D.C. resident Shaika Therlonge, a Haitian-
American, told the AFRO in a January interview.
But while few doubt Jean’s efforts to aid the island nation
are sincere, the self-proclaimed Moses of the Haitian Diaspora
is an outsider in Haiti’s complex governmental structure. Jean
has spent the past two decades of his life as an entertainer and
philanthropist. And some question whether he can withstand the
pressures of a full-time presidency and navigating a government
many consider rife with corruption dating back decades.
“I think Wyclef’s candidacy is going to surprise a lot of
people,” Florida Rep. Phillip Brutus, a Haitian-American from
Miami and a candidate for U.S. Congress, told Time.com
days before Jean announced his campaign. “But I fear that if
you parachute him into the Haitian presidency, the culture of
corruption and cronyism there may well eat him alive.”

“If he feels he can make some changes in that country and do some great deeds for
people there, why shouldn’t he run for president?”
Sergiana Bruno said she does not believe Jean is prepared to
lead the island nation, citing his lack of experience and her fear
the country will grow “more treacherous” under his command.
“The country will not become better until we have a
politician who is rightful and optimistic in improving Haiti,”
said Bruno. “One day, we would love to have more tourists
to visit Haiti for vacation. We would love to have roads built,
better education, and reduced poverty. Haiti can change to
a better country with the right politician. After all, Haiti is a
beautiful island.”
Furthermore, Jean must show he meets the nation’s basic
requirements for presidency, which include living in the
country for at least five consecutive years, owning land there
and claiming sole citizenship in Haiti.
Although he lived in Haiti until age 9 before moving to New
York and later New Jersey, Jean’s older brother Samuel told

Walcott said that while many Haitians see Jean as “part
of the Haitian culture and a part of the Haitian lifestyle,” his
megastar status could be either an advantage, or impetus for his
undoing.
“The real question is, do [the Haitian people] see this
musician as a politician and will he be able to take his
American rock star prowess and transfer it into Haitian political
life?” said Walcott. “Does he have the requisite understanding
to actually execute the daily protocols of a commander in
chief? Those are the types of questions that are being asked
as the election cycle unfolds and voter responses [to these
questions] will create the narrative of Jean’s candidacy.”
Jean’s fellow celebrities have been slow to embrace his
turn toward politics. Actor Sean Penn told CNN that he was
skeptical of the decision, and Jean’s fellow Fugees member
Pras on Aug. 6 issued a statement of support—for an opponent
of Jean.
“I endorse Michel Martell as the next president of Haiti
because he is the most competent candidate for the job,”
Pras said in a statement, according to CNN. “Our beautiful
homeland has experienced such devastation and I believe he is
the only who can lead the country into a brighter future.”
But in Herschel Jordan’s eyes, Jean is already accomplished.
For 14 years, Jordan has worked at Rosalee Beauty Supply in
Newark, N.J., and each day he sees Eglise du Nazareen du Bon
Berger—a church Jean’s late father once led—looming across
the street. Jordan also remembers that Jean, like himself, was
once employed at Rosalee Beauty Supply.
“From working in a beauty supply store to getting into
music, now he’s trying to get involved in politics; I feel he’s
doing something great. He has a lot of supporters in Haiti and
supporters in music,” Jordan said. “If he feels he can make
some changes in that country and do some great deeds for
people there, why shouldn’t he run for president?”

Sociologists and historians
would remind us that it is the
kind of thing to be expected

upheaval and economic
stress. Folks start looking for
scapegoats, and they usually point the finger of blame at some
kind of “other” – other race, other gender, other region, other
religious group.
But even typical human behavior does not excuse the
conservatives’ latest reprehensible idea: To repeal the 14th
Amendment – the one that protects citizenship, due process and
equal protection; the one that gives the U.S. Constitution its
integrity.
In a flat-out panic over the influx of Mexicans across U.S.
borders, conservatives have done what people in panic usually
do – they react with knee-jerk desperation, grabbing onto
anything that looks like a solution, which, in hysteria, nearly
anything might.
According to these cretins, pregnant Mexican women only
come over here to “drop” their babies so the children will be
entitled to the American bounty. Strip away the constitutional
guarantee that anyone born here is, by virtue of that fact, a U.S.
citizen, and those brown women will have one less reason to
sneak over here.
More than a decade ago, I was part of a newspaper project
about drastically changing demographic trends. The team
reported that the population in much of the Midwest would
slowly diminish; that the population of the South would swell,
especially among Black Americans; that the White birth rate
would freeze; that the Latino birth rate would skyrocket; and
that – here’s the big one – Whites would no longer be the
majority race.
The series we ran drew a lot of praise in academic circles
and seemed to intrigue the readership, but it didn’t exactly stop
the presses – understandable, given that demographics is not
the sexiest topic.
I suppose it’s a good thing that the articles did not start a fire
because that would have only started the panic that much ahead
of the reality, giving the no-no’s that much more time to build
A Tragic Indifference
Once again, the United
Rev. S. Todd States Congress has failed

modern institutional injustice
against Black farmers. After
years of racist neglect of Black farmers by the Department of
Agriculture that ultimately led to the loss of Black lands and
Black livelihoods, the government reached a settlement with
the Black farmers that, to date, has still not been fully satisfied.
The justification for this oversight sounds reasonable at the
surface. But, when viewed in light of other appropriations
that have been deficit-funded since this settlement was reached
initially in 1999, this injustice bears witness to the reality that
we are not living in a post-racial society as many would hope.
It has been widely reported that last Friday, Sen. John
Barrasso (R-Wy.) objected to a motion for unanimous consent
to pay the remainder of the Pigford settlement as part of a bill
that was being considered by the upper chamber. While it is
not to say that Sen. Barrasso is overtly engaging in racism, the
refusal to appropriate the funds to settle the remaining claims
based on the deficit argument is a disingenuous dismissal of the
principles of moral government and righteousness in our time.
This country has funded a war in Iraq that was initiated outside
the principles of morality, based on deceptive intelligence, and
has been sustained by deficit funding – all in the name and

As a freshman representative in Congress, Lyndon Johnson
studied under legendary House Speaker Sam Rayburn. Among
other words of advice, he told him, (some words are changed)
“It’s better to have someone inside your tent, urinating
out, than to have someone outside your tent, urinating in.”
President Obama needs an umbrella to contain the moisture
inside as well as outside his tent.
If printed and televised reports are to be believed, outside
of his inner circle, his support has the strength of tepid tea. The
Democrats make sounds, but no one gives the impression of
falling on their swords to save him. Perhaps, this is fueled, in
part, by the fear of the upcoming midterm elections, with the
clouds of defeat in the horizon. Even MSNBC, which salivated
over his “March to the White House,” seems, at times, like
Fox News. Republicans, who present a program of opposing
everything the Obama Administration proposes, lacking an
alterative program in replacement, strut like roosters in the
barnyard, sensing victory.
It’s difficult to win a war when the troops are in retreat
while you are moving forward. Will he survive the slings and
arrows of outrageous foes as well as friends? Will the oil spill
be his Waterloo? Will we, continually, accept the premise of
his supporters that a man of color must mask his emotions
his emotions and not be compassionate because Americans
see men of color in a negative light when anger rises to the
surface? Is he so cool, he seems cold? Will the jobless obtain

their political levees against
the coming tide. Imagine what
they would have done with
a 10-year head start on the
“immigration problem.”
Only once in U.S. history
has a constitutional amendment
been repealed. Interestingly,
it was the 19th Amendment
– prohibition – that was
later silenced by the 21st
Amendment, when the right
to booze was determined to be
supreme.
The 14th Amendment was
hatched by Congress in 1866
as a capstone to Emancipation
and the end of the Civil War
and to grant citizenship to the
millions of Black people who
had been born on these shores during slavery. Two years later, it
had been ratified by the requisite three-fourths of the states.
The 14th Amendment has been challenged, violated and
occasionally disgraced since then, but on the whole, it has
prospered and prevailed. There has been no serious talk about
nixing it—until now.
Shamefully, many of the proponents of this repulsive idea
have taken to calling themselves “constitutionalists,” and little
clubs of them have sprouted up all around the country. Right-
wing talk radio is one of their regular haunts and there, you can
hear them fawning over any one who claims to believe that the
Constitution is sacrosanct and virginal, never to be spoiled by
modernity or new ideas. For example, they adore the ridiculous
Sharon Angle, Nevada’s Republican nominee for the U.S.
Senate, because she talks all that “strict constructionist” mumbo
jumbo and professes to worship the Constitution, as they do.
The poor Constitution must feel like it’s being stalked by
unwanted suitors. She must know that, were she to fall into
their hands, they would love her to shreds – ruining her beauty,
which is based on her protections: The Fourth Amendment
hope of victory over terrorism. Yet, before there was terror
from without, the Black farmers were terrorized from within
and victimized by the institutional denial and neglect of a
department of the federal government that should have been
accountable to the very institution (Congress) that now refuses
to pay (or is unable to find the unction to pay) for the damages
that same department caused.
Now, here is the not-so-funny context of this indifference.
Just a few short weeks ago, outrage was unleashed on Shirley
Sherrod for being racist in her official role with Agriculture.
Yet, in the instance of the Black farmers there is a haunting
silence. How is it that we can call it racism when it’s not,
and say nothing when it clearly is racism in its most sinister
institutionalized, albeit passive, form? This is not a critique
of the practice of being fiscally responsible; it is a critique of
being morally responsible. We cannot be the moral conscience
for human rights in the world, when the world can openly
see that we cannot honor the human right of fulfilled justice
in our nation. The obvious question to be asked is, “Why the
reluctance and inability to take a righteous action?” Could it
be that, if resolved, the Congress will also have to address the
injustice against Hispanic farmers and Indigenous Americans
who have suffered from similar indifference at the hands of the
same government department? Could it be that to acknowledge
this injustice on the seasonal eve of the mid-term election will

jobs? Will his emphasis on the middle class as the hope of
America indicate a rejection of those unable to achieve middle
class status? Has he the intestinal fortitude to survive what
amounts to a lonely crusade to take Americans to the next
level, locally, nationally and internationally? Will his tent be
soaked?

Repower or Replace? Your Choice Could Cost You
Thousands
When serious engine trouble hits, the Engine Repower
Council (ERC) recommends that vehicle owners ask
themselves if they should repower or replace the vehicle.
Many motorists don’t consider repowering and instead take
on the financial burden of buying a new car. That choice can
result in a cost difference of thousands of dollars.
With repowering, the vehicle’s engine is disassembled,
cleaned, machined and remanufactured to be as good as
new. This is the best option, since repowered engines are
dependable, reliable and backed by excellent warranty
programs. Some may choose a used or junkyard engine. The
risk here is that the used engine has an unknown performance
and maintenance history, which means you may be asking for
more problems.

tax) and, of course, the blessed 14th Amendment. These same
people have tolerated, if not championed, abuse after abuse,
exception after exception, and offense after offense against the
old girl they claim to love.
Repealing the 14th Amendment is the sick invention of
sick minds, and I’m counting on it going nowhere because we
are capable of coming to our senses, even after long bouts of
cultural upset.
If I’m wrong and the Chicken Littles are able to persuade
the majority of people in 38 states to destroy one of the
linchpins of the U.S. Constitution because they are afraid
people they think are different might get even a free whiff of
the American Dream, then what’s the point? They would have
lost their country anyway.

cause some to find themselves in vulnerable positions with
their constituents? Or, could it be that we have only viewed
the bravery spoken of in our national anthem in terms of
battles fought with external enemies, while the enemies that
truly threaten our nation (racism, classism, ageism, sexism,
homophobia, discrimination against the physically and mentally
infirm, etc.) go unchallenged?
Whatever the justification for this inaction, the meaning
is still the same. When it comes to acknowledging our own
sinfulness as a nation, some seem to only point out two sins –
abortion and homosexuality. Yet, the sin that so easily besets
us, and will easily lead to our demise as a nation, is the one of
feigned ignorance when it comes to the cause of justice and
just causes. If the decisions that are rendered by the courts
and the settlements that are agreed to are not honored and fully
satisfied, it matters not what the composition of our federal
courts will be, for justice will continue to be a conceptual hope
instead of a practiced reality. This is, indeed, our nation’s
modern tragic indifference.

Once oil is found, they radio down to the 6,000 ships and boats of all sizes that are
Economic Investment supporting the cleanup effort and working to collect the oil. These are thousands of
Environmental Restoration local shrimping and fishing boats organized into task forces and strike teams, plus
specialized skimmers mobilized from as far as the Netherlands.
Health and Safety
Wildlife We have recovered more than 27 million gallons of oil-water mixture from the Gulf.
Other methods have also helped remove millions of additional gallons of oil from the
water. We’ve deployed more than 8 million feet of boom to protect beaches and
sensitive wildlife areas.

Hurricane Preparedness
In the event of a hurricane, our first priority is keeping people safe. In coordination
with the Coast Guard and local officials, we may suspend operations temporarily but
have organized to resume them as soon as possible.

Our Responsibility
We have already spent more than $3.2 billion responding to the spill and on the
cleanup, and none of this will be paid by taxpayers. We will work in the Gulf as long
as it takes to get this done. We may not always be perfect but we will do everything

Bow Wow and Brandon T. Jackson sound off on ‘Lottery Ticket’

Sure, people say “money
can’t buy happiness,” but
when you’re young, living
in the projects and sick of
your surroundings, that
old saying seems like a lie.
Such is the case for Kevin
Carson, the lead character in
the Erik White film Lottery
necessary.
Lottery Ticket marks
White’s directorial feature
film debut and also features
an all-star lineup including Ice
Cube, Charlie Murphy, Mike
Epps and T-Pain.
The AFRO sat down with
Bow Wow and Jackson to
discuss their characters in the
film as well as the behind the
scenes efforts it took to put
to trust. Everything that Kevin
goes through in the movie, I
go through [all the time].
AFRO: As for you
Brandon, do you feel
as though there are any
similarities between you and
your character Benny?
Brandon T. Jackson:
Benny’s a street rat. That’s
what he is but he aspires to be
is the same. And [while we’re
filming], Bow Wow’s over
here tweetin’ and I’m like,
“This guy is good, how can
he act and tweet at the same
time?” [Laughs].
BW: Me and Brandon’s
chemistry is cool because
it’s basically a comfort thing.
You know, we did work with
each other in Roll Bounce

Ticket. Kevin, played by
rapper/actor Bow Wow, is a
recent high school graduate
who appears to have a bleak
future ahead of him. Teamed
with his best friends Stacie
(Naturi Naughton) and Benny
(Brandon T. Jackson) he does
what he can to survive in his
dilapidated environment. But
Kevin’s life is turned upside
down after an interesting
twist of fate lands him with
a lottery ticket worth $370
million. After realizing he
won’t be able to cash the
ticket until after the Fourth
of July weekend, Kevin must
keep it safe and maintain
his sanity as his whole
community desperately
tries to obtain their share of
his winnings by any means
this laugh-out-loud comedy
together.
AFRO: What drew your
interest to be in this movie?
Bow Wow: For a lot of
people, when they see the
[movie] trailer they’re like, “I
think I know what this movie
is” and I’m like, “you have
no idea.” You just see a kid
winning the lottery but you
don’t see the key [themes].
The movie has a lot of strong
meanings behind it. It deals
with not forgetting where you
come from and helping others.
But at the same time, when
people see the film they will
see the pressure of making it
out of the ‘hood and having
something everybody wants a
piece of and not knowing who
something more. That’s the
best thing about my character,
he has a lot of depth, but he’s
just not funny. I think that’s
how I am in real life—I think
about things more so than just
being funny. I think about
underlying character traits.
AFRO: This is not the
first time the two of you have
worked together. Can you
both explain the chemistry the
two of you have?
BTJ: Every time I get
around Bow Wow, it’s like a
reunion. It’s crazy because we
are just a bunch of bad kids
and they’re filming it and you
guys are watching it happen.
It’s not like we’re doing Roll
Bounce over, but the energy
of us just having a good time

me—it was the fact that I had
the chance to work with guys
that I’ve worked with already.
Charlie Murphy was in Roll
Bounce, Mike Epps was in it
also, I worked with ‘Cube in
All About the Benjamins—so
being around all these guys
felt like a reunion.
AFRO: This film appears
to be a light family comedy
on the surface but when you
see it, you realize that it deals
with some pretty heavy issues
like poverty, bullying, etc.
This may confuse some people
[about] the movie’s intended
audience. Who do you think
this film is primarily going to
appeal to?
BTJ: It’s PG-13, so it
depends on what you want to
expose your kids to. It’s not
Bow Wow stars in Lottery Ticket
right on that line. We can’t
be corny, because we’re too
grown for that. We’re still
young, but we’re crossing
over into that grown situation.
AFRO: Lastly, Bow Wow
what do you have lined up
for the “Lottery Ticket”
soundtrack?
BW: To tell you the honest
to God truth, you’re ahead
of me because I haven’t seen
the full list, [laughs]. But, this
is something that I always
fight for in every movie that
I do: [I want to have] the
first single of the movie. I’m
starring in it so, why not? For
the previous movies I did, I
tried. I tried with Hurricane
Season, I tried to do it with
Roll Bounce but they just
done anything since Like
Mike. So I told everybody
that I could come up with a
record that could tell the story
of Lottery Ticket if you guys
give me the opportunity to
do so. They heard the record
and they loved it. So, the “For
My Hood” song with me, DJ
Khaled and Sean Kingston
is a little about me, but it’s
mainly dealing with my
character Kevin in the movie.
Everybody was like, Bow,
you’re not from the ‘hood,
but…it’s not about that,
it’s a song from the movie,
and we’re talking about the
character.

The five highest-earning schools will be
eligible to receive a $1,000 bonus in addition

Dakari Taylor-Watson was recently named
a Fulbright scholar and will be heading to
Terengganu, Malaysia, for 10 months next
January to teach English to secondary school
students.
Taylor-Watson, who earned a degree in
biology from MSU in 2009, was chosen
by the international educational exchange
program. The program is sponsored by the
State Department based on academic merit and son’s interest in science. “Being old enough to
leadership potential to study and teach abroad.
The 23-year-old told the AFRO that he
will also volunteer in a hospital or clinic
while in Malaysia, and has plans of applying
to medical school when he returns to the
United States. As for spending nearly a year
away in a foreign country, it’s not something
Watson hasn’t experienced before. He moved
to Paris for three weeks as
an exchange student when
he was 10, not long after his
mother, Aisya Taylor-Watson,
died of cancer. Taylor-Watson
believes his mother’s spirit
travels with him everywhere
he goes.
“I know she’s looking
down at me, everything I do,
smiling — disapproving of
some stuff, and then I go back
and change it up,” he once
told the Daily Press. “She’ll
be with me. She doesn’t have
a choice.”

Dakari as he takes another
step closer to reaching his

medicine. His father, Robert
Watson, told the AFRO that
studying science runs in the
family blood.
“I’m a history professor, but I also have
a [bachelor’s of science] in chemistry and
one of my nieces has a degree in physics,
while another niece majored in biology,”
said Watson, who currently teaches African-
American history at Hampton University and
is considered by his colleagues as an authority
on the African Diaspora. “I believe that’s one
of the main reasons he’s so intrigued with the
field.”
Professor Watson said witnessing his
mother’s illness may have also influenced his
witness that may have inspired him to be a part
of saving or improving others’ lives,” Watson
said. “I’m very impressed with Dakari’s
desire to be exceptional in ways that won’t
just impact himself, but others around him. I
wouldn’t’ be surprised if he would touch into
the ministry field as well. He is really tuned
into improving the conditions of others.”

Haynesworth Teaches Redskins

Albert Haynesworth’s stat
line isn’t going to read like
a Pro-Bowl credential sheet
this year. It’s not going to
list more than 100 tackles or
10-plus sacks or numerous
quarterback pressures. It’s
not going to be anywhere
close to that; maybe not
even half of that. But the
stats don’t have to be there
“just the performance. The
Washington Redskins are
never going to get a return on
their $100 million investment
in Haynesworth, and that’s
fine. We’re probably looking
at his last season in the
District anyway.
But while the stats don’t
have to be there, the effort has
to be “no, better be” there this
season. No more wallowing
on the ground in-between
plays; no more commercial
breaks where he’s huffing on
the sidelines like he just ran
from the Capitol to FedEx
Field. Sorry, Albert, not this
year.

whose careers fall off a cliff
once they arrive in the capital.
It’s been that way for years
now, and Haynesworth’s no
different.
But hopefully (and we
can only hope), this serves
as an eye opener to owner
Daniel Snyder. “Dollar Dan”
has never seen a player he
couldn’t get, never seen a
contract that wasn’t too much.
He’s reeled in free agents
through lavish courting and
promises of career paydays
but after this summer passes,
he may have to rethink his
business strategy. Will he
change completely? Probably
not, but Redskin fans have
to remain patient while their
owner learns NFL Franchise
101 on the fly. He’s gone
on record regretting the Jim
Zorn hire and expressing his
displeasure in Haynesworth,
so maybe his eyes are
a year after he finished fifth
on the team with 51 tackles.
Ellis, who was also named
to the All-MEAC First team
after the 2009 regular season,
was second on the team with
15 tackles for loss last year.

would’ve loved to ball up and
throw out the window along
Brightseat Road. But they
couldn’t. It was one of those
years that just wouldn’t end.
Washington had everyone
except for forensic scientists
accessing its problems
but people just couldn’t
understand it. The money was
there, the players were there
but the performance…well, it
just wasn’t.
The Redskins have done
everything to sweep last
season under the rug, but
Haynesworth continues to
remind everyone of a 2009

AFRO Looks Ahead at NFL North Divisions

The New England Patriots and New
York Giants were projected to emerge from
the rubble in the AFRO’s NFL Eastern
divisions analysis last week. This week, the
spotlight will be pointed on the NFL Northern
divisions. The AFC and NFC North share a
lot in common: they’re both equipped with
strong-armed quarterbacks, dynamic running
backs and strong defenses. They also share
a quartet of teams that many have slated for
deep playoff runs: the Green Bay Packers,
Minnesota Vikings, Baltimore Ravens and
Cincinnati Bengals. But there can only be two
favorites. The AFRO looks into it…
AFC North
On paper, this might be the most
competitive division in the league. A stylish
draft helped the Baltimore Ravens end April
as Super Bowl favorites, and the Cincinnati
Bengals’ latest addition, Terrell Owens, has
the team talking title now. The Pittsburgh
Steelers will open the season without starting
quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for the first
four to six weeks, but many of the key pieces
that helped land a Super Bowl trophy two
seasons ago remain intact. The Cleveland
Browns have been the annual doormat of the
division for most of the decade but the last few
weeks of the 2009 season saw them play all
three division rivals close, even upsetting the
Steelers last December.
But the Browns won’t be in the sentence
for AFC North favorites. That line is reserved
in a battle between Baltimore and the Bengals.
Cincinnati swept the Ravens last season and
ran to a 9-3 start before losing four of their
final five games, including a home playoff
loss against the New York Jets. Even with an
appearance in the second round of the playoffs,
many looked at Baltimore’s 9-7 season last
year as a disappointment. The team had
finished just one quarter shy of the Super Bowl
two seasons ago but failed to play with the
same kind of consistency through the regular
season last year. But despite their ups and
downs, Baltimore’s pair of 2008 draft picks,
quarterback Joe Flacco and running back Ray
Rice, emerged as budding superstars last year.

seasons as the Ravens shifted from a team
defined by its defense to a club now equipped
with an attractive and powerful offense.
The team might be forced to lean on the
development of the two third-year players as
injuries in Baltimore’s defensive secondary
could pose as potential problems. The Bengals
gave every team in the division all kinds of
problems last year and will return several
players from injury along with added upgrades
to a receiving corps and hopefully a peace of
mind.
Cincinnati was blindsided by the early
season death of defensive coordinator Mike
Zimmer’s wife and the late season death of
receiver Chris Henry that eventually took its
emotional toll on the team. With a clean slate
and talented upgrades, Cincinnati has a shot at
fighting off the Ravens and Steelers to win the
AFC North for a consecutive season.
NFC North
Like last season, this division hinges on
two words from Minnesota Vikings legendary
quarterback Brett Favre: I do. Recent reports
about Favre’s health and possible retirement
have the Vikings behind the eight ball. If he
retires, you can just about remove Minnesota
from the top of any Super Bowl favorites
list. You’ll also be able to willingly scratch
the Vikings off any NFC North favorite list

as well. Not to say that Minnesota won’t be
competitive next season, but the division will
immediately look to last year’s runner ups, the
Green Bay Packers, as consensus favorites.
Only two teams scored more points than
the Packers last season—the Super Bowl-
winning New Orleans Saints and the Favre-led
Vikings. Green Bay will return rising superstar
Aaron Rodgers at quarterback and a defense
that finished second in the league before
collapsing down the stretch after a string of
devastating injuries. With Favre possibly out
of the way, the Chicago Bears also have a
shot at challenging in the North but question
marks at wide receiver, the offensive line and
secondary may limit their chances. The Detroit
Lions round out the divisional quartet but last
year’s 2-14 finish puts them light years behind
the rest of an established pack.
If Favre does indeed return, the Packers
will have some stiff competition. Minnesota
swept Green Bay in both meetings last season.
Even without Favre, the Vikings still have
arguably the league’s top running back in
Adrian Peterson and a defense that led the
NFL in sacks last season with 48. But if it’s no
Favre, it may be a no go for Minnesota. His
return is indeed possible but until he decides
his future, it’s Green Bay who has the best
quarterback-defensive combination in the
division, which could guide them to an NFC
North title.
