Part-A (5x2)
(10 Marks)
1. State Fouriers law of heat conduction.
2. What is critical radius of insulation or thickness?
3. What is the significance of Biot number?
4. Define Nusselt number.
5. Define boundary layer thickness.
Part-B (2x16+1x8) (40 Marks)
6. a. A wall is constructed of several layers. The first layer consists of masonary brick 20 cm
thickness of thermal conductivity of 0.66W/mK,the second layer consists of 3 cm thick
mortar of the thermal conductivity 0.6 W/mK,the third layer consists of 8 cm thick lime
stone of thermal conductivity 0.58 W/mKand the outer layer consists of 1.2 cm thick
plaser of thermal conductivity 0.6 W/mK.The heat transfer co-efficient on the interior
and exterior of the wall are 5.6 W/sq.mK. and 11 W/sq.mK respectively.Interior room
temperature is 22 degree celcius and outside air temperature is -5 degree celcius.
Calculate the following.
(a)Overall heat transfer co-efficient
(b)Overall thermal resistance
The rate of heat transfer
(d)The temperature at the junction between the mortar and the limestone (16 Marks)
(Or)

b. A steel tube with 5 cm ID,7.6 cm OD and k=15 W/mC is covered wih an insulative
covering of thickness 2 cm and k=0.2 W/mC.A hot gas at 330C with h=400 W/m2C
flows inside the tube. The outer surface of the insulation is exposed o cooler air at
30C with h=60 W/m2C.Calculate the heat loss from he tube to the air for 10m of the
tube and the temperature drops resulting from the thermal resistances of the hot gas
flow, the steel tube, the insulation layer and the outside air. (16 Marks)
7. a. Air a 25 C at the atmospheric pressure is flowing over a flat plate at 3 m/s.If he plate is
1m wide and the temperature Tw=75 C.Calculate the following at a location of 1m
from the leading edge.
(i)Hydrodynamic boundary layer thickness
(ii)Local friction coefficient
(iii)Thermal boundary layer thickness
(iv) Local heat transfer coefficient (16 Marks)

b. Air at 2 bar pressure and bulk temperature of 200 C is heated as it flows through a tube
with a diameter of 25.4 mm at a velocity of 10 m/s.Calculate the heat transfer per
unit length of tube if a constant heat flux condition is maintained at the wall and the wall
temperature is 20 C above the air temperature all along the length of the tube. How
much would he bulk temperature increase over a 3m length of the tube. (16 Marks)

8. a. A copper plate 2mm thick is heated up to 400 C and quenched into water at 30 C.Find
the time required for the plate to reach the temperature of 50 C.Heat transfer co-
efficient is 100 W/m2K.Density of copper is 8800 kg/m3.Specific heat of
copper=0.36 kJ/kgK.Plate dimensions=30x30 cm. (8 Marks)
