Unit 1: Singing & the Breath Chapters 1-5

Very early in the semester, students will be asked to start leading the breathing & vocal
warmups.
8/24 Welcome to Methods & Techniques in Voice
Read Ch 1-2, do 1st range check
Prepare Amazing Grace (p. 134) in key of choice, a cappella.
Write your vocal history in a nutshell 3 min. To be shared orally in class &
turned in.
8/29 Ch 1-2- The Process of Singing- terminology & physiology
How to get started: range check, warmup, body alignment
Speaking to singing: each student will speak a short excerpt: (vocal history)
Complete student logs: timbral & temporal observations of classmates
speaking voices.
8/31 Observations taken in notebooks of all voices in the class- Amazing Grace.
Expand vocabulary to describe timbre and vocal production.
Observing the WHOLE singer!

11/2 Ch 9: Vowels & Consonants. Activities will include diction assignment, singing &
IPA for Star Spangled Banner, part-singing Star Spangled Banner in 4 pts
Ch 10, management of blend & balance in ensemble singing

11/15 IPA assignment due: Star Spangled Banner
