Austin Proehl is a lot of
things. Right now, hes a
Gunter Brewer whisperer.
Its a humid afternoon in
Kenan Stadium, and Tuesdays
practice has just ended. Some
players peel off pads and
head toward the locker room.
Others joke around and do
their best Odell Beckham Jr.
impressions with one-handed
catches. The wide receivers,
however, arent done yet.
Brewer, their position coach,
is less than satisfied with their
performance today. Out of the
16 receivers on UNCs roster,
half of them are in their first or
second year with the program.
They stand silently as he walks
back and forth and stresses
communication.
At one point, he asks some-
one to run a stick a short
and fairly simple route. When
the receiver does, its obvious

asked for.
Give me a stick! he yells.
His words are loud and clear
to everyone nearby. But when
the unit huddles and breaks for
the day, everyone seems calmer
Brewer included. Its as if
practice ended on a good note.
As if someone actually did give
Brewer a stick.
Hes always unhappy
about something, Austin says
with a smirk.
He pauses for a moment

to Providence High School
in Charlotte, where Brewer
personally recruited the wide
receiver to come to UNC.
Austin, now a senior, explains
how the jokes go both ways.
I can take little jabs at
him, because he takes little
jabs at me sometimes, Austin
says. We have a good rela-
tionship.
Thats all part of the fun,
though. And fun is something
Austin has a lot of.

not have been the ideal way
to spend the weekend. But
for two brothers obsessed

are there, too. But you cant
deny that UNC just has
some straight-up athletes.
My last bold prediction
was the Cavaliers beating
the Warriors, 4-2, the
2017 Finals. So Ill go with
7-5 for the Tar Heels this
season.
When asked how these
Tar Heels who have yet
to announce a starting
quarterback will fare this
season, I know Ill prob-
ably be wrong. So, in an
attempt to think ahead, Ive
decided to go against my
gut. I think this 2017 North
Carolina football team will
go 11-1 in the regular sea-
son, dropping its only game
to Louisville in Week Two.
The Tar Heels defense will
prove to be a strength rath-
er than a liability, and may
even force wait for it
more than one interception
this year. Trust me!
Larry Fedora has always
managed to field a produc-
tive, if not prolific, offense.
But this year offers his big-
gest challenge. If he can
turn the Tar Heels into a
divisional contender after
losing 98.6 percent of last
years offensive production,
UNC might finally have
the right coach to bring
the football program to the
next level. I expect a lot
of inconsistency. The Tar
Heels could just as easily
beat Louisville or Miami
as lose to Virginia or Old
Dominion. UNC will finish
7-5.

In North Carolinas 25-23
loss, Austin finished with a
team-high seven catches and
91 yards. Among them: a toe-
dragging sideline catch and
four more comeback routes,
all run to perfection. On one,
he launched his 5-foot-10,
185-pound frame in the air to
make a grab over and behind
his head.
If you recognize his name,
his daddy was a good one, an
announcer noted.
Thats a comparison that
comes up a lot, but Austin
doesnt mind it. Ricky is his

tor. Why wouldnt he want to
be associated with someone
like that?
I think its a blessing for
people to say, Hey, thats
Ricky Proehls son, he said.
I love having that title, and
Ill never turn that down.

ing past. He wears athletic
tape on both wrists with the
phrase BP 11 on them, a
tribute to his brother, who
will miss his entire first sea-
son at ECU after an ACL tear
in training camp.
Austin emerges from
around the fourth dummy
and catches a bullet pass.
His teammates go through
the same post-practice drill.
Theres a certain energy as
they slap the thick canvas
material of the dummies and
juke and spin around them.
If Brewer asked someone to
give him a stick right now, it
would definitely happen.

before Fedora does. Finally,
the two make eye contact.
Fedora rolls his eyes and
shoos Austin away. So the
receiver skips over to his next
project linebacker Andre
Smith. Austin positions him-
self between the two cameras
Smith is talking to and starts
nodding his head and raising
his eyebrows, acting like every
word Smith says is a revela-
tion. His teammate can barely
keep a straight face.
Come Saturday, Austin will
line up as the No. 1 receiver
for the first time in his UNC
career. Hes spent his entire life
around professionals. Hes been

mentored by NFL stars like
Marshall Faulk, Isaac Bruce
and Steve Smith. Now, its his
turn to be that presence.
I think (my teammates)
look to me in situations,
which is awesome, he says.
Thats what I look forward
to being able to help these
young guys out.
Hes the leader of what he
calls an unidentified unit.
Hes been told hes too small.
He still doesnt know whos
going to throw him the ball this
weekend. It doesnt matter.
To quote an old saying in
the Proehl household: Austin
is a lot of things, but scared
aint one of them.

messed up a drill, he would
want to do it over again until
he got it right.
And extra motivation just
made him out-prepare and
out-work you. Take his senior
year for example.
Collins Hill (Ga.) wide
receiver Justin Wyatt, who
currently plays at Troy
University, took to Twitter
and called Miles over-
rated in the week leading
up to a game against North
Gwinnett.
I gave Donnie the task to
make sure that that kid didnt
catch a pass, Rice said.
Miles diligence in the
video room and focus on
the field heightened. Hed
always been a hard worker,
but that week, between the
long hours in the film room
and better reps on the field,
Coach Rice could tell Miles
was locked in.
And that kid didnt catch a
ball, Rice said. To know that
he could do it that week, I
knew that he could do it every
week.
Selling his dreams
When North Carolina foot-
ball head coach Larry Fedora
was recruiting his first couple
classes of athletes, it wasnt as
simple as it is now.
Amid hysteria surround-
ing Tar Heel athletics at that
time the same scandal that
has loomed over UNC for
the past six years he was
forced to spend more time
defending the new school
that he wore on his visor
the benefits of orienting goals
and sticking to the plan.
Achievements dont come
for those who merely desire
they come to those will-
ing to narrow their focus and
concentrate all their decisions
so that theyre pushed in one
direction.
Fedora saw North Carolina
football as wet clay, begging
to be sculpted by players will-
ing to change the culture of
the historically overshadowed
program.
He needed players with
reputations of taking their
talents and molding them
to fit into a system to help a
team. He needed players he
could trust to buy into his
methodology of preparing
for every team the same way,
every day.
And most importantly,
he needed players who
could trust him, the mostly
unproven coach with dreams
of building a home at North
Carolina.
I committed to him
because when I was going
through my commitment,
I wanted someone that was
going to be there, Miles said.
I didnt want someone that
was just going to blow me
smoke. And I think Coach
Fedora has done a great job
with his players since Ive
been here.
Seeing it all
Five years later, Miles and
Fedora are now considered
old heads.
Miles, a redshirt senior, has
separated himself as an elite
safety in the ACC. Hes totaled
230 tackles over the past two
seasons and started all 27
games.
Entering his sixth season
at the Tar Heel helm, Fedora

Then, in 2016, they both
experienced an unexpected
and underwhelming five-loss
season.
And this upcoming year
isnt void of its harrowing
challenges. One day before
its first game of the season,

as defensive coordinator
making John Papuchis the
Tar Heels third defensive
coordinator in the last five
years.
Were going to accept
the challenge on defense,
Miles said after UNCs first
practice of the season. Like
he said, we havent done
anything yet, so lets live up
to the hype, live up to the
challenge. Thats our main
thing.
The rude boys, as the
North Carolina secondary so
famously call themselves, are
a band of brothers who make
up the 2017 Tar Heels most
experienced unit on either
side of the ball.
I think the reason peo-
ple pair them together is
because, you know going on
three years, they have started
together, Papuchis said of
Miles and cornerback M.J.
Stewart. Theyve both been
starters since Ive come in

them get after it their senior

Dalton leads with a quiet, calm approach
Jalen Dalton heads
into season with new
drive for success.

If Jalen Dalton could blend
in with a crowd, he would.
Hes the quiet and thought-
ful type, never one to seek
attention. According to his
teammates, he is a steadfast
leader, a virtue much more
easily disguised than his
6-foot-6, 295-pound frame.
His imposing presence can
make it hard to be subtle, but
along he goes, quietly sitting
next to you in class, or politely
scooting past you in the aisles
of Walgreens. Hed prefer to
just be on his way.
A sleeping giant, some may
call him.
But come Saturday, North
Carolina will be counting on
this sleeping giant to stand in
the midst of a defensive line
responsible for defining the
identity for the schools foot-
ball program this season.
Its time to wake up, Jalen.
Reality
The accolades that escort-
ed Dalton into his first year
in Chapel Hill ensured all
eyes were on him from the
moment he stepped on cam-
pus: the No. 1 player in the
state of North Carolina, the
No. 4 defensive end in the
nation, and an Under Armour
All-America selection.
I dont really look at things
like that as reality, Dalton
said of the recruiting praise.
I dont think that was one of
the things that put pressure
on me. I realize thats there,
but thats not why I feel pres-
sure. Theres pressure just all
from the inside.
The hype wasnt reality.
The results were. And the
results werent what Dalton
had hoped for himself. In a
season that he could have
redshirted, Dalton found
himself earning significant
minutes in his first year in
Chapel Hill. But he felt as

though he wasnt making the
most of them.
He attacked the gym over
the spring and summer, put-
ting on over 40 pounds as he
made the move from defen-
sive end to defensive tackle.
I had a really big spring
and then had a pretty good
training camp, Dalton
recalled, so I thought going
into the season, This is going
to be my season, finally.
Well, once again, it just
didnt turn out like I wanted
it to.
While serving next to

Protesters protect Civil Rights Center

Students donned orange in the

Pit Thursday to protest the possible
closing of the Center for Civil Rights.
UNC Black Congress organized
the protest, which began at noon.
Over 100 protesters started at the
Pit and then moved to Silent Sam,
chanting, If you dont give us jus-
tice, we wont give you peace.
Director of the Center for Civil
Rights and UNC law professor Ted
Shaw said he attended to express his
appreciation of students support.
Shaw said hes not feeling hopeful
about the vote.
The indications are that theres a
very good chance that the Board of
Governors is going to push through
this ban on doing civil rights cases,
he said. I wish they would turn
around and do the right thing, but
thats in their hands.
Shaw said the University will lose
more than just the opportunity for
experiential learning in civil rights
law.
It will lose some integrity, he
said. It will lose its connection with
the center as it was created by Julius
Chambers in honor of his legacy,
and frankly I think its going to lose
credibility in legal academia across
the county.
You know the country is watch-
ing this people across the country
are watching this, so it will lose a
great deal.

sonal experiences, what are
your thoughts on the recent
events that happened in
Charlottesville?
ESTHER LEDERMAN: Well this
reminded me very unfortu-
nately about happenings in
Germany in the 1930s. It start-
ed with mobs. It started with
appealing to the lowest human
instincts and of course these

maybe its good its there it
reminds you of what stupidity
people believed in. So, it can
go both ways.
DTH: Recently theres been a
rise in white nationalism and
the alt-right movement in the
United States. What do you
think is contributing to the
rise?
EL: I think in times of crisis,
of any time of crisis, thats
what happened in Germany
after World War I when there
was a tremendous economic
downturn. There was unem-
ployment, there was hunger,
money had no value. Somehow
the base instincts come out
and they appeal to mobs as I
said before.
DTH: Are there any parallels
you see in the political climate
of today and that of 1930s
Germany?
EL: It is familiar and I just hope
in the American peoples minds

Squirrel hitches a ride with professor
A professor
was driving
when she
noticed the
animal

A campus squirrel spent
the night off-campus after
imprinting with a UNC lec-
turer.
Broadcast and electronic
journalism lecturer Lynn
Owens left to take a phone
call on Tuesday when a squir-
rel got into her car while it
was parked by the admissions
office.
As I was leaving cam-
pus right after class, I was
on Highway 40, and I felt
something on my foot. I
looked down and a squir-
rel was crawling up my
leg, she said. I kind of
had a moment of panic, but
obviously Im driving on
the highway, so I kind of
kept calm and the squirrel
crawled into my lap, drove
all the way home, and I
realized obviously that the
squirrel had somehow got
into my car on campus.
Owens said shes not quite
sure how he got into her car.
I put (my tote bag) on the
wall, which is right there with
trees and everything, Owens
said. I think that the squirrel
might have smelled snacks
or something in my bag and
crawled in.
She took the squirrel to her
house to stay overnight.
Her kids named him Mr.
Nuts and wanted to keep him.

Library hosted a panel to
discuss Silent Sam, the pur-
pose of Confederate monu-
ments and free speech on
Wednesday night.
The event was open to the
public and moderated by
UNC history professor Lloyd
Kramer. The panelists includ-
ed Police Chief Chris Blue,
assistant English professor
Danielle Christmas, assistant
history professor William
Sturkey and others.
Throughout the evening,
attendees stated their per-
sonal views and anecdotal
stories on what Confederate
statues meant to them.
Sturkey said he wants Silent
Sam to be taken down and
reflected on his familys
history with Confederate
statues.
He said every generation
of his family had lived in a
different state since the end

Chapel Hill residents will
head to the polls to vote in
Town Council and mayoral
elections Nov. 7 and choose
from one of the most diverse
pools of candidates in recent
years.
Four town council seats are
open this year, and at least
two of them will be filled by
newcomers. Sally Greene and
George Cianciolo have con-
firmed they will not rerun for
office. The two incumbents
are Ed Harrison and Maria
Palmer.
Palmer is the only Latina
woman currently serving on
Town Council, and said she
was disappointed with the lack
of Hispanics and Latinos(as)
involved in politics in Chapel

experienced racism all over
America.
He said his great-grandfa-
ther had to face the decision
whether to leave the North
Carolina because of racial
persecution.
My great-grandfather left
the state of North Carolina
because of the very same
violence that Julian Carr cel-
ebrated, not just advocated,
but celebrated at the Silent
Sam dedication speech.
Sturkey said the actions
and political rhetoric of
Julian Carr, the namesake of
Carrboro, either had to live
in a constant fear or flee the
state of North Carolina.
So what does that mean?
Sturkey said. That means
we didnt get to build monu-
ments in the state to celebrate
our history. That means
many of us didnt even get to
have a history. In some ways,
we didnt even get to have a
future.
Blue said its important to
be having these conversations
with the community in a pro-
ductive dialogue.

talked about around Silent
Sam and our interest in a

last week to think about
how volatile these times
are, Blue said. The pres-
ence and even conversation
about removing a monu-
ment, as was the case in
Charlottesville, can lead to
people losing their lives.
Christmas said it was more
than the controversy of Silent
Sam that brought her to the
event.
I have to earn my place
here, Christmas said. I
need to figure out what on
Earth Im going to contrib-
ute because I can talk about
in my office but what do I
have to say that can advance
whats going on in this room?
We all have something to add
to this because we all have a
stake in how we remember
our past.

attack by, you know, things
that our president has done
and said, Buansi said. I
think thats motivated people
of diverse backgrounds to get
out there and do something
about it.
Currently, the only people
of color on Town Council
organization deals mainly
with baby animals in the area
that need help. She said the
squirrel will probably be put
with several others.
This one is old enough
to eat some solid foods,
Rogers said. So it will be in
rels, and he will eventually be
released.

the squirrel into her office in

advice or whatever knowl-
edge youve acquired over
the years to younger folks, its
your responsibility to do that,
Bowers said. Im honored
and flattered that somebody
would think of me, that Id
have something to offer.

is re-elected, there would

Of course I am keenly
aware that I am Asian and I
am a female, she said. The
most recent statistics I looked
into I think Asian accounts
for about 12 percent of the
Chapel Hill town population.
Given that its a large popula-
tion that does not have any
representation currently in
Chapel Hill, that might be
a crate on Wednesday. When
she told her class about the
squirrel, they wanted to see
it, so she brought the squirrel
to class.
The students got a kick
out of it, she said. There
were a lot of selfies.

Elizabeth Adkins said she
had class with Owens last
year.
When she saw on social

If we have more minority
representation in the council,
we can push harder for issues
that affect minority commu-
nities, Palmer said.

LAB! aims to make six plays in 24 hours
The plays are
written, directed and
performed in a day.

Artists must suffer for their
work, but not all artists suffer
the same.
This Friday and Saturday,
LAB! Theatre will be per-
forming their 24-hour play
festival.
LAB! Theatre is UNCs old-
est student-run theater group,
specializing in experimental
theater.
This is not a play that lasts
24 hours. It is an event where
LAB! members and interest-
ed participants write, produce
and perform six different
plays in 24 hours.
The process will start at 9
p.m. Friday when everyone
participating in the event
will gather together. Then
Reid Scothorn, a senior
political science and his-
tory major and an executive
producer for LAB!, will kick
things off.
The writers have creative
freedom, Scothorn said. But
everyone is encouraged to
bring in props for the intro-
ductory meeting. This can be
anything an empty wine
bottle, a teddy bear. Last year

of the Focus on the Peck
Collection at the Ackland
Art Museum features three
works: Noli mi tangere, a
Rembrandt drawing, a wood-
cut by Albrecht Drer and a
painting by Gerard Seghers.
Out of those three works of
art, only the Rembrandt draw-
ing is from the Peck Collection.
The collection includes six
other Rembrandt drawings,
which made the Ackland the
first public university art muse-
um to have such a collection.

The actors will then be
called in, and the directors
will cast each of their shows.
The remaining time is spent
rehearsing and adding techni-
cal elements to the shows.

Through it all, home felt
very far away, and my friends
felt even further. this sum-
mer made me realize how
alienating time away from
school can be for an under-
grad.
Unless youre some mas-
termind who somehow
managed to score the Perfect
(Paid) Internship in An
Awesome City Where All
Your Friends Also Were, you
were probably like me, who
somehow ended up some-
where she would have never
anticipated: Texas.
Okay, so you prob-
ably werent also in Texas
Needless to say, when I
arrived in Houston to work
as a teaching assistant at an
intensive program for high
schoolers, I didnt know any
of my co-workers.
I felt far away from UNC.
Sometimes this can be a
good thing, but I was on a
different university campus,
so I really felt out of place
and disoriented. It was as
if I landed on a high-tech
planet where somehow the
inhabitants could survive in
extremely high temperatures
and humidity, and I had only
been provided the shabbiest

n times of struggle,
the most important
teaching occurs out-
side the classroom walls.
Luckily, our University
has no shortage of brave
faculty who are willing to
lend their expertise, time
and voices to the most
contentious issues facing
our campus. This board
would like to recognize the
swelling number of fac-
ulty who have spoken up
and organized around the
fate of Silent Sam and the
Center for Civil Rights.
By writing and speaking
about social justice, fac-
ulty give students the tools
to make thoughtful argu-
ments and help us under-
stand the broader implica-
tions of whats happening
on campus.

Jim Leloudis from the
department of history, Dr.
Fitz Brundage from his-
tory and others have writ-
ten pieces in the News and
Observer and Vox.
passed a resolution stat-
ing their concern over the
Board of Governors pro-
posed policy to close the
Center for Civil Rights.
On Wednesday night,
Dr. Lloyd Kramer led a
panel of experts in a com-
munity discussion at the
public library about Silent
Sam and the history of
confederate monuments.
With a diverse panel of
speakers ranging from the
Chapel Hill chief of police
to some of our campuss
most active academic
leaders, the panel was a
chance for community
members to ask questions
and share their reflections
on recent events.
The mobilization of
faculty in light of recent
events has occurred across
departmental lines.
While this board is par-
ticularly impressed by the
activism of the humani-
ties, we would also like to
commend the actions of
faculty in health affairs
and other areas of the uni-
versity not typically associ-
pus community believe
that Silent Sam should
come down. But we often
disagree on why and how
it should come down. The
legal and logistical details
behind Silent Sam and the
Center are being discussed
behind closed doors.
These issues are kept
alive by the buzz we cre-
ate. Danger lies in losing
momentum, as has hap-
pened in decades past.
Our campus community
must stay vigilant and
faculty will lead the way in
pushing the administra-
tion and the legislature.
Now is the time to find
new ways to teach and to
be activists whether
through teach-ins as
occurred at UNC during
the Vietnam War, or sim-
ply encouraging discus-
sion over coffee at Lenoir,
faculty and students
should work together to
keep these issues alive.
We must push the
administration. We must
learn more. We must lis-
ten. We must make noise.

avoidable.
In November 2016,
California voted to ban
plastic bags for large retail-
ers. Customers bring their
own reusable shopping
bags or pay a ten cent
charge for paper bags.
Many other cities have
adopted bans, including
Washington D.C., Chicago
and the Outer Banks.
Though not all bans
are as strict, they are cer-
tainly effective. San Jose,
California found an 89 per-
cent reduction of plastic lit-
ter in the storm drain sys-
tem after instituting their
2011 plastic bag ban.
In cities that ban plastic
bags, or at least take steps
to reduce plastic usage, cus-
tomers are far more likely
to carry their own reusable
bags. In Thurston County,
Washington, the plastic bag
ban reduced single-use bag
usage from 63 percent to 3
percent in only six months.
Chapel Hill could benefit
greatly from taking this
small step to reduce waste
and save the environment.

and going to cool museums.
Here I was just hoping for
an hour break in my sched-
ule to go to the gym.
My feelings of alienation
melted away when I found
out another TA, Garrett,
was from UNC. How in
the world did two students
from Chapel Hill end up in
Houston?
We bonded immediately
over how much we love UNC
and marveled at the fact
we knew many of the same
people yet had never met.
Garrett changed the way the
program went for me; he
took me in and helped me
feel at home even though we
were far from it.
It turns out a lot of my
friends found UNC at their
far-away places, too. This
started me thinking about
how Ill find UNC when I
graduate in May. Its hard
to imagine being away from
this campus, but it will be
reality before I know it.
I dont plan on staying in
town after I graduate. No
matter where I go, I know
Chapel Hill will be with me.
Hopefully there will be
someone at the next destina-
tion to remind me that being
Tar Heel born and bred
doesnt end when we put on
that graduation robe.
Being a Tar Heel means
finding a home with other
people who love this place as
much as you do even if you
arent here.

Recently, the Institute of
Politics launched on UNCs

wish we could
