Date : 21/11/2012 Time : 3 Hours Max. Marks: 60

1. Question No. 1 is Compulsory.
2. Answer any FOUR from questions 2 to 8.
3. All parts of a Question must be answered in one place to get valued.

1. Answer the following in 4 or 5 sentences.

a) For higher order reactions for a given conversion, the size of CSTR is always bigger than 2 Marks
PFR. Explain why?
b) It is said that the rate of reaction doubles for every ten degree rise in temperature. Give a 2 Marks
method to prove the above statement for a reaction whose activation energy is 40000
calories.
c) Explain what you understand by elementary and non elementary reactions? 2 Marks
dC 2 Marks
d) rA = A .Is it true for CSTR and PFR? If so why and if not why?
dt
e) Explain the role of thermodynamics in reaction kinetics. 2 Marks
f) Why is isothermal operation the most optimum operating temperature in case of reversible 2 Marks
endothermic reaction.
g) Write the species independent reaction rate r for the reaction, A + B C + D in terms 2 Marks
of rA, rB, rC & rD.
h) What is reaction stoichiometry? What basic conservation law does it represent? 2 Marks

2. A homogeneous liquid phase reaction A R, rA = kC A2 takes place with 50% conversion in a 11 Marks
mixed reactor. What will be the conversion if this reactor is replaced by one 6 times as large-
all else remaining unchanged?

3. Liquid A decomposes by first-order kinetics, and in a batch reactor 50% of A is converted in a 11 Marks
5-minute run. How much longer would it take to reach 75% conversion?

4. A first-order reversible liquid reaction A R, CA0 = 0.5 mol/liter, CR0 = 0, takes place in 11 Marks
batch reactor. After 8 minutes, conversion of A is 33.7% while equilibrium conversion is 66.7%.
Find the rate equation for this reaction.
5. The kinetics of the aqueous-phase decomposition of A is investigated in two mixed reactors in 11 Marks
series, the second having twice the volume of the first reactor. At steady state with a feed
concentration of 1 mol A/ liter and mean residence time of 96 sec in the first reactor, the
concentration in the first reactor is 0.5 mol A/ liter and in the second is 0.25 mol A/liter. Find
the kinetic equation for the decomposition.

6. The elementary liquid phase reaction A + B C is carried out in a PFR. The entering 11 Marks
concentrations of streams A and B are both 2 molar and the specific reaction rate is 0.01 liter/
(mol.min). Assuming a stoichiometric feed (10 mol A/ min) to the reactor, calculate the reactor
volume and space time to achieve 90% conversion.

7. Substance A reacts according to second-order kinetics and conversion is 95% from a single 11 Marks
flow reactor. A second unit identical to the first is bought. For the same conversion, by how
much is the capacity increased if we operate these two units in parallel or in series. The reactors
are both plug flow.

8. It is required to design a CSTR for a reaction A R with (-rA) = kCA and k = 4.71 x 107 exp(- 11 Marks
8000/T)s-1; further C p = 3.5 MJ/m3K and (Hr)A = -168 MJ/kmol A converted. Reactor feed
is available at 10C and contains CA0 = 3 kmol/m3. Volumetric flow rate is 0.01 m3/s and feed
conversion is 0.9. Write the appropriate energy balance equation for adiabatic operation of the
reactor.
