Dunning-Foubert Elementary School 2017/2018

Mrs. Walkers News

Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

Welcome to the start of a new school year! The Dunning-Foubert Intermediate team is looking
forward to a positive and highly successful year. As your childs Homeroom teacher, I would like to
take this opportunity to briefly outline some important information about our school year.

Teachers and Schedule

Mrs.Walker- Homeroom, Mathematics, English (ETFI), Visual Arts

Mme Grimes- Science, Music, Drama, Dance
Mme Ballantyne- French Language Arts, Geography, History, Phys. Ed., Health

I have attached a working copy of your childs schedule. Students will be following a Monday-
Friday schedule. Teachers responsible for more than one area of the curriculum have flexibility in
planning their teaching blocks, and these may be adjusted to meet the learners needs.

Recommended Supply List

Students will be using the following materials, as outlined in the common supply list, on a daily
basis:
An integrated binder (or two, with sections for A pencil case containing pencils, pens,
each subject) highlighters, scissors, eraser, pencil
A supply of lined, plain and graph paper crayons, glue stick, ruler & sticky notes
Geometry set * Athletic shoes for Phys. Ed.
Calculator * Gym clothes and bag (deodorant!)
Duo tangs Indoor shoes for rainy or winter days
A combination lock for locker

Adminstrative Information Forms to Sign!

The office has compiled a package of important information. Each student will also receive an
agenda. Please review the package carefully and return the following, completed and signed, to
the school as soon as possible:

Agenda: Agreement on page 5 Emergency Telephone Network Information

Media/School Website Permission Appropriate Use of Technology Agreement
OCDSB Cloud Permission Kinsella Park Permission
Student Information/Verification

In addition, we are requesting that you send a cheque (payable to Dunning-Foubert E. S.) to cover a
VOLUNTARY ACTIVITY FEE of $25 which will be used for a variety of initiatives throughout
the year, including field trips, purchase of the agenda and special presentations/activities.

Nutrition Breaks and Recess

Dunning-Foubert follows a balanced school day. There are two 20 minute eating times and two 25
minute recesses.
Donations:
White board markers, pencils, glue sticks, scissors, rulers, graph paper, tracing paper and lined
paper are items that are always in demand; any donation to our classroom supplies would be
appreciated! Large yoghurt containers would also be useful in art class

Lockers
Students will be using lockers to store their outdoor clothing, bags, lunch and school supplies. All
students must provide a lock in order to keep their belongings secure; the combination should be
given to me during the first week of school.

Cell Phones, Ipods/Ipads and Other Electronic Devices

Cell phones and ipods are allowed to be brought to school; however, they may only be used with
direct teacher permission and for educational purposes only (Students do not have permission to
check email or make personal texts/calls during school hours. Personal photography or videos are
also not permitted). Electronics are not to be used at recess or during eating times. When not in
use, devices should remain turned off. Consequences for inappropriate use of technology will be
administered by the office following the Dunning-Foubert progressive discipline policy.

Homework
Please write me a note if homework cannot be completed due to family commitments or illness.
Class time is provided for students to start their work and ask questions if they do not understand.
Work that is not completed in the classroom will be assigned for homework. Occasionally,
assignments will require independent work at home. Rubrics and/or outlines will be provided by
teachers; however, students are responsible to ensure they have a clear understanding of
expectations through consultation with teachers and peers. Additionally, students are expected to
read at home independently (in both French and English) on a daily basis as well as organize their
binder(s) and papers. Extension activities for Math can also be found on my website.

Communication
Details concerning assignments, homework, field trips, and upcoming school events are posted on
the board at school as well as on my class website. Please access our homework calendar at:
http://walkeratdunningfoubert.weebly.com/

As well, photos from daily class life and field trips are uploaded to our class Homeroom site (This
school years link will be forwarded to you in the near future!)

Each student will also receive a Dunning-Foubert agenda at the start of the year. By grades 7 and 8,
your child should be using the agenda independently, although teachers may occasionally send a
note home. If you would like to send me a note in the agenda, please feel free and have your child
indicate it upon arrival at school. I would like to send regular email updates this year using
Google Classroom and will contact you shortly to confirm your interest.
Please feel free to contact me by agenda, phone or email if you have any questions or concerns
about your childs progress. I look forward to meeting with you at the Meet the Teacher event on
Thursday, September 14th.

Sincerely, School Phone: (613) 824-5800
