The School of Arts and Creative Industries, London South Bank

University is at the heart of Londons 35 billion creative economy.
The global market for creative talent has enjoyed an unprecedented growth in recent years and
the UK has the largest creative sector in Europe and one of the largest in the world. According to
Government figures released in 2016, the creative industries are worth 84.1 billion per year to the
UK economy.

The creative industries lie at the crossroads between creativity, business, and technology. Our
School effectively bridges the gap between creativity and enterprise, blending creative, cultural,
management and business skills to prepare employment-ready graduates who are creative
and business-savvy, dynamic and resilient, and who can survive and thrive within the highly
competitive environment of the creative economy.

Otavio Pliger BA / BSc (Hons) Games Design and Development

Our location and industry focus encouraged Otavio to pursue his love of
Game Design.
I already knew how to code, but wanted a course that was based on game
design, says Otavio. Unfortunately, there were none in Italy so I knew I would
have to move to the UK if I was to follow my dreams.

The location is just fantastic, he says. Being in London, I knew it would give
me access to many events in the games industry, and the course was just what
I was looking for.

Its through immersing himself in the gaming community that Otavio has
already begun to make a name for him and has been noticed by some of the
biggest names in that industry.

Most recently, Otavio worked on the Italian translation for the Cosmic Star
Heroine store page. The game made it into the top 25 on Steam, he says proudly.
It was only a little bit of work, and I did it for free, but I enjoyed contributing to
such a successful project.

Otavio hopes to open his own game studio in the future, and feels that LSBU
has given him all the skills he needs to make it a reality. The lecturers are really
passionate and involved, and the course has taught me how the industry works
and what it needs, he says. Im always getting advice on how to make connections
in the industry, and it is bringing out the best in me. The facilities are superb, and
having a game studio to work from has been an immense help.

Ellie-Louise Style BA (Hons) Journalism

The facilities and the location of LSBU helped Ellie Louise

decide to study here. I knew I wanted to study in London, which
narrowed things down to start with, says Ellie-Louise. LSBU had
the best facilities, including a brand new newsroom, and that
made it an easy decision for me.

Ellie-Louise hosted her own radio news bulletin show which ran
most Friday mornings into the early afternoon at the Elephant
studios at the university. I learned a lot from that experience,
including how to make content sound fresh and different even
when you are having to deliver the same news more than once,
she says.

Ellie-Louise also had the chance to create a news show, working

internationally with students in Canada, Russia and the USA
(among others). I worked for the organisation, called Global
Campus Network, on two occasions, she says. The first was
for a show about the American Elections, where I presented
and produced part of the show. The second time, I presented
a live half-hour show where we discussed the topic of fake
news, linking to pre-produced videos from each country. It was
a challenge for me as live television can be nerve-wrackng, but I
gained plenty of confidence from it.

Dima Sol BA (Hons) Drama and Performance

Dima came to London to follow his passion and with the benefit of
LSBUs professional facilities and academic support, he is now an
established actor. He has already appeared in a number of plays,
including The Idiot, by Dostoevsky, in which he was the lead.

Dima is quick to praise the structure of his degree. The schedule at LSBU is adapted
to improve students employability, so you have the opportunity to work outside the
university and gain some practical experience, he says. That helped me to develop
myself as an actor.

Dimas development has been supported by the facilities at the Edric Theatre. Using
such professional facilities made a big difference, says Dima. It helped us all to prepare
for the performance we were staging there, and gained a better feeling of the space.

Dima put everything he learned at LSBU into action when he was called in to audition
for the theatre company, ART-Vic. The company specialises in classical texts such as
by Beckett, Chekhov, Shakespeare and Dostoyevsky, explains Dima. My success saw
me land a role in The Seagull by Chekhov, followed by Wife For Sale by Checkov, where
I appeared in five of the eight stories. Since then, Ive played in Lolita by Nabokov,
Morphine by Bulgakov.

Game Plan
Head of Games Siobhn Thomas was named
as one of the Top 30 Women in Games in 2016
for her contribution to the industry and for her
work on Enable Gaming, which brings computer
gaming to disabled children in hospices.

When I tell people one of my research interests is body

awareness in game design, they often seem surprised, says
Siobhn. Its as if they dont think of people using their bodies
in gaming. But of course theres always a physical element to
it. Understanding that element how people operate and
interact with the game console, camera or keyboard is one of
the key challenges being tackled by Enable Gaming, a project
set up by Siobhn in partnership with charity Lifelites, in which
LSBU students were commissioned to develop computer
games for children at all 54 baby and childrens hospices in the
British Isles.

Designing games with a variety of user groups in mind is

all part of our mission to ensure students graduate with an
understanding of the importance of diversity, says Siobhn.
And that means gender diversity too. While the number
of women on LSBUs game design and development course
