BATTLEMECHS
InBATTLETECH,youcommandaLanceoffourMechspilotedbybraveMechWarriors.Mechs
aregiantmachinesofwar,eachwithavarietyofweaponsandcapabilities.Mechshavemany
bodyLocationswhichcantakedamageindependentlyandbedestroyed.Eachlocationhas
Armor,whichprotectsInternalStructure.
ALocationgenerallywonttakeStructuredamageuntilallofitsArmorisdestroyed.
WhenaLocationsInternalStructureisgone,theLocationitselfisdestroyedandallof
theinternalcomponentsandweaponsonthatLocationarealsodestroyed.

CAMERA
UseWASDkeystopan,mousewheeltozoom,andholdR-Mousetofreelytumblethecamera.
Mouseedge-panningisalsoenabledbydefault.
MOVEMENT
Left-clickonceonaterraindottosetyourdesiredposition,whichwilllockyourmovement
indicatorinplace.Thenmovethemousecursoroutandhoveraroundtosetyourdesired
rotation.Left-clickasecondtimetoconfirmyourrotationandexecutethemove.Notethat
Mechshavealimitedturningradius-thefartheryoumove,thelessrotationyoullbeableto
setforyourdestination.(Formoreaboutmovement,seeStandardActions,p.12.)
HEAT
MechsgainHeatwitheveryactiontheytake,butparticularlyfromfiringweaponsandfrom
usingjumpjets.Attheendofeachturn,Mechsdissipateacertainamountofheat(basedon
thefunctionalheatsinkstheyhaveintheirvariousLocations.)
WhenMechsgettoohot,theystartOVERHEATING,andtakeInternalStructuredamage.
WhenaMechsHeatbarfillsup,itshutsdown.SHUTDOWNMechsrequireafullturnto
restartandarevulnerabletoCalledShots(seep.9)-somanageyourheatcarefully!
WhileinFiringMode,beforecommittingtoanattack,yourheatbarwillshowhowmuch
heattheattackWILLgenerate.SomeMechsaremoreheatefficientthanothers,and
firingallofyourweaponsisoftennotthebestdecision.Toggleweaponsoffviathe
weaponpanelinthelower-righttoconserveheat.
Ifyourerunninghot,trystandinginwater-youlldissipatetwiceasmuchheatwhile
standinginwater.

STABILITY
WhenMechstakedamage,theycanalsotakeStabilityDamage.
PastathresholdofStabilityDamage,MechsbecomeUNSTEADY.
UNSTEADYMechswillfallandbecomePRONEiftheiryellow
StabilityDamagebarfillsup.
PRONEMechsarevulnerabletoCalledShots(seep.9),andmustspendpartoftheir
nextmovestandingbackup.
UNSTEADYlastsuntilthenexttimetheMechusestheBrace(EndTurn)action.
ThebestwaystodealStabilityDamageareattackingwithMissiles(LRMsandSRMs)
andwithMeleeandDeathFromAboveattacks.
RANGEDATTACKS
UsetheWeaponPanelinthelower-rightoftheHUDtotoggleweaponsonandoff.TheWeapon
Panelwillalsoindicatewhetherweaponsareinrangeornot,andwhattheirindividualchances
tohitare.RangedattacksuseyourMechWarriorsGunnerySkilltodeterminechance-to-hit.
Whenlookingatatargetonthebattlefield,thenumberofbrackets
aroundthetargetindicateshowmanyweaponsarein-rangetothat
target.Goldbracketsindicateweaponsthathaveoptimalrangetoa
target,meaningtheywillhaveabetterchanceto-hit.

CALLEDSHOT
WhenthetargetofyourrangedattackisPRONEorSHUTDOWN,youcanmakeaCalledShot
onthattarget.(Theinterfacewillappearautomaticallyinfiringmode.)Thisallowsyoutoselect
aLocationonthetargetMechtobethefocusofyourattack.Yourweaponswillbemorelikely-
butnotguaranteed!-tohitthisLocation.Unlikenormalrangedattacks,CalledShotsuseyour
MechWarriorsTacticsskilltodeterminechanceto-hit.
POSITIONING&FLANKING
PositioningisacriticalpartofcommandingyourMechseffectivelyonthebattlefield.When
firingonatarget,youcanhititsFront,Left,Right,orRearArcdependingonyourposition
relativetothetargets.(Indicatedbytheredarcatthebaseofthetarget.)Thisarcdetermines
whichLocationsonthetargetyourattackwillbeabletodamage.ALeft-Arcattack,forexample,
cannotdamagetheRightArm.Ifyouvebeendealingdamageconsistentlytoone
ArcofanenemyMech,itsagoodideatotrytocontinuedealingdamagetothe
sameArc.ThiswillmaximizeyourchanceofpunchingthroughArmorand
damagingtheStructureofLocationsonthatsideoftheMech.
Mechsgenerallyhavemuchweakerreararmorthanfrontarmor,andRear-Arcshotsignore
DefensessuchasCoverandGuarded(seeDefenses,p.13).Movingorjumpingbehindan
enemytogetaRear-Arcshotisoftenaneffectivewaytogaintheupperhand.Justbecareful
thatyoudontexposeyourreararctodifferentenemyMechinturnbydoingso!
MELEE&DEATHFROMABOVE
Meleeattacksarefull-turnactionsthatcanbeusedtobreakenemy
Defenses(seetheDefenses,p.13)anddealsignificantamountsof
damagewhentheyconnect.TheydealthemostStabilityDamagein
thegame,andareagreatoptionwhenyourerunninghotandwantto
avoidfiringweaponsinordertocooldown.However,theyalsoleave
youexposedandwithoutDefenses!Ingeneral,heavierMechsdeal
moreMeleedamage,butthisvariesfromMechtoMech.
ExecuteMeleeattacksagainsttargetsviathegoldbracketsinMovemode,orexecuterisky
DeathFromAboveattacksfromJumpmode(warning:DeathFromAbovedealsdamagetoyour
ownMechslegs!)ThesebothuseyourMechWarriorsPilotingskilltodeterminechanceto-hit.
IfyourMechhasenoughmovementavailable,youcancontrolthedirectionofyourmelee
attackwithinalimitedarc.SelectaMeleetarget,thenclickonanadjacentterraindotif
available-forexample,thedotstotheleftandrightintheaboveimage.ThisfeatureisWIP.

InitiativeTurn-Order
Atmissionstart,you'reabletomoveyourentireteamsimultaneouslyuntilcontactismadewith
anenemyunit.Thiscontinuesuntilyoumakecontact:assoonasyouseeanenemyonyour
sensors(whatwecallablip),weswitchovertocombatmovement,whereeachplayertakesa
turnmovingjustoneMech.
Eachcombatroundisdividedinto5Phases,andwhichPhaseeachMechcanactondepends
onthesizeoftheMech.LighterMechscanactearlierinaround,whileheavierMechsare
forcedtoactlaterintheround.
HereyoucanseethattheplayerhasoneMechthatcanactinPhase4,whiletheenemyhas
two.InPhase3,theplayerhastwoMechs,whiletheenemyhasone.
Thegamewillalwaystrytotradeoffactingbetweenyouandyouropponent,untilonesideruns
outofMechsinthecurrentPhase.Whenthathappens(likeinPhase3)thesidewithMechs
remainingwillgettousealloftheminarow.
AftertheendofPhase1,anewroundbeginsatPhase5.(OrthefirstPhasethateithersidehas
unitsavailablefor.)
AninterestingthinghappenswhenyouReserveyour
Mechs.YoudonthavetoactwithyourMechswhen
itsyourturn.YoucaninsteadreserveALLofyour
remainingMechsforthecurrentPhasedowntothe
nextlowerPhase.SoifyouhadtwolightMechsthat
couldactinPhase4,youmightreservethemdowntoPhase3,justsoyoucouldseewhatyour
enemywasgoingtodofirst.YoucanreserveallthewaydowntoPhase1,ifyouwant!Butyou
havetoactinPhase1,beforetheendoftheround;youcantkeeponreservingrightintothe
nextroundentirely.
Knowingwhentoactandwhentoreserve,andhowtousethosetwothingstogethertogetthe
jumpontheenemy,isakeyelementofthetacticsofBattleTech.

WeaponTypes
ENERGY-Thesimplestweaponsaretheenergyweapons.Energyweaponsdontrequireany
ammunition,butgeneratealotofheat.Thebasicenergyweaponsarethemediumlasersand
largelasers,buttherealkingofthistypeistheParticleProjectorCannon(PPC):hugedamage
andlongrange,butalsomassiveheat.
Mediumandlargelasersgetabonustoaccuracyoverotherweapons.
ThePPCisabletodealamoderateamountofstabilitydamageuponimpact.
BALLISTIC-Theballisticweaponsarefamiliar;theyresimilartomodernguns.Therearefour
differentclassesofautocannon:theAC/2,theAC/5,theAC/10andtheAC/20.Thenumbers
indicatehowpowerfultheweaponis;theAC/2doescomparativelylightdamage,buthas
enormousrange,whiletheAC/20doesabsolutelycrushingdamage(itsthemostdamaging
weaponinthegame!)buthasveryshortrange.
Ballisticweaponsgeneratelessheat,butuseammunition.
Thatammocanrunoutorevenbedamagedbyenemyfireandexplode,causing
additionalinternaldamagetothatlocationonyourMech.
Allballisticweaponsdealsomestabilitydamagerelativetotheirclassaswell.
BallisticweaponsincurasmallRefirePenaltytotheirto-hit%whenfiredmultipleturns
inarow.
MISSILE-Missileweaponscomeintwoflavors,long-rangemissiles(LRM)andshort-range
missiles(SRM).Missilebatterieshaveanumbernexttothem;thistellsyouhowmanymissiles
willfirewhenyouusethatweapon.TheLRM-10weaponfirestenlong-rangemissiles;the
SRM-2firesjusttwoshort-rangemissiles.ItsbesttothinkofSRMsasshotguns:alotof
damagedeliveredupclose.LRMsdolessdamageper-missile,butcomeinbiggerlaunchersand
canfireextremelyfar.
LRMsalsocanfireattargetsthatyoudonthaveadirectline-of-sight(LOS)to,which
youllrecognizebythecurvedarcshapeoftheredlineoffire.
MissilesdealmoreStabilityDamagethantheotherweapontypesdo.
Thelargerthesizenumberofalauncher,thefasteritchewsthroughammo.
SMALL-Thefinalcategoryofweaponissmallweapons.Thisincludes,themachinegun,the
smalllaser,andtheflamer.Theyhaveextremelyshortrangeandlowdamage,buttheyalso
haveaspecialfeature:unlikelargerweapons,theycanbefiredwhenyoumeleeattackan
enemy.Ifyourecloseenough,theycanalsobefiredasnormalrangedweaponry.
Machinegunsareexcellentatdealingcriticalhitstoexposedstructure.
Smalllasersdealgoodrawdamagerelativetotheirheatgeneration.
Flamerscandecreasetheperformanceofopponentsbyraisingtheirheatlevels.

VulnerabilityStates
Thereareseveralmajorvulnerabilitystatesthatyouwillseeonunitsinthegame.Payingclose
attentiontoyourownvulnerabilities,andtakingadvantageofyouropponents,canspellthe
differencebetweenvictoryanddefeat.
Unsteady ThisunitisvulnerabletobeingknockedPRONE,cannotSprint,
andcannotbleedstabilitydamagebelow50%.Removedby
BRACE.
Prone CalledShotscanbemadeagainstthisunit,anditwillsuffera
movementandto-hitpenaltyonitsnextturnafterstanding
backup.
Sensor ThisunitisSensorLockeduntilendofround,makingitvisible
Locked tobothsidesregardlessofnormalvisibility.EVASIVEand
movementto-hitmodifiersarealsosuppressed.
Overheating ThisunittakesstructuredamageeachturnwhileOverheating,
andisclosetoshuttingdown.

ThesearespecialactionsorpassiveattributesthatyourMechWarriorswillprovidetoyour
Mechs.IntheBetabuild,eachMechWarriorhasexactlyoneability,butinthelaunchgamemore
experiencedMechWarriorswillbeabletounlockmultipleabilities.Theseabilitiesarean
importantpartofyourLanceselection-choosewisely!

(damaginganddestroyingenemyMechs)increaseyourMorale.YouwillalsogainsomeMorale
atthestartofeachturn.
WhenyourMoraleBarfillscompletely,yougainInspirebuttonsaboveyour
MechWarriorportraits.
