Your voice, not ours
This edition is dedicated to community voices.
Print space is prized amongst
my staff. Giving up a whole paper
to mostly non-staff-made content
isnt something we would nor-
mally do.
But the start to this school year
has been anything but normal.
Given the past two weeks, we
thought it might be time that we
stopped talking and give others a
chance.
Issues like Silent Sam, the
Center for Civil Rights and nation-
al events have been on the mind
of every student, alum and com-
munity member. While I hope our
reporting reflects this community,
ultimately you are the best to rep-
resent your own interests.
This issue features the voices
of our community regardless of
viewpoint. I want you to see this
edition as one big sounding board
of public opinion.
It also highlights that what
is happening in Chapel Hill
isnt isolated to the town or the
students currently here. Alumni
from all over are writing in too.
While this edition is a special
moment for our opinion desk, I
think it means much more than
that from a journalistic perspec-
tive.
There is no way we could fit
in this many sources into one
story which can make it look
like there is a larger consensus on
what to do than there really is.
These letters were not solicited
by a member of my staff. All were
organically submitted by commu-
nity members. We tried to run as
many as we could in this edition,
no letter was turned down based

We must not forget that Silent
Sam is a Confederate soldier. The
primary purpose of the memorial
was to associate a fictitious honor
with the darkest blot on American
history the fight of southern
racists to keep the Negro peoples
in a position of debased subservi-
ence. For this they were willing to
destroy the Union.
We have all been made pain-
fuully aware of the deprivation

Sam in the graveyard
not a viable solution

As the Silent Sam Sit-In is
heading into its second week,
the administration has failed to
address their issues with trans-
parency, and instead continue
to trifle with student safety on
campus. Some solutions have
been offered up in promise to
rectify the wrongs of the statue
and its dedication.
The most prominent solu-
tion is moving the statue to the
graveyard on South Road. This
is a trash solution for a trash
statue. There are approximate-
ly 475 unmarked graves on
the west side of the graveyard,
where many of the slaves who
built the university are buried.
This site has been disrespected
in the past, used as parking for
football games, and has been
the location for many par-
ties. Housing Silent Sam in a
graveyard honoring the lives of
slaves and others dedicated to
this university is an insult.
Putting Sam in the very
graveyard with graves of slaves
is an affront to their lives and
their service. Sam doesnt rep-
resent them, didnt fight for
them, and its truly a question
of why Chancellor Folt and the
University administration are
so bent on fighting for Sam,
and protecting a statue pro-
moting white supremacy.

problems. Leading a commu-
nity is not a position of glory
and stature, it is a position of
humility and service.
While UNC might be an
enormous bureaucracy with
competing interests from
stakeholders for Chancellor
Folt to balance, she can still
speak. And she has repeat-
edly advocated the kind of
free speech absolutism which
allows white supremacist vio-
lence to go unchecked. She has
refused to publicly support the
removal of Silent Sam.
This omission is deafening.
It tells many of us that we are
not a valid part of the com-
munity the Chancellor serves,
but white supremacists are.
Inaction after Governor
Cooper approved the removal
of Silent Sam to protect
public safety signals that she
does not believe that violence
directed at marginalized
people threatens public safety.
The myth of white
supremacy is an incitement to
violence against the most vul-
nerable members of this com-
munity and Silent Sam is the
lightning rod for that violence
on UNCs campus. They will
continue to come. They will
continue to do violence.
It may not all be Folts fault.
But fault is not the reason
that people are angry: inac-
tion is. Given the continued
mishandling of this situation,
the UNC community should
call for the Chancellors resig-
nation. Then perhaps we can
find a Chancellor who will
serve this community by put-
ting its safety and well-being
before PR concerns.

The ancient Romans had
a doctrine: salus populi
suprema lex esto (roughly, let
the safety of the people be the
highest law). Yesterday, UNC
declined to remove the racist
Silent Sam statue, claiming
it could not use the logic of
public safety as an excuse. I
cannot imagine a worthier
reason.
Chapel Hill could easily be
the next Charlottesville. Neo-
Nazis use Confederate monu-
ments as rallying points, and
we have already seen white
supremacists gather in front
of Silent Sam. Unfortunately,
we know Nazi sympathizers
exist on campus. Last year, I
wrote to this paper after seeing
someone use the survey board
in the Undergrad Library to
advertise a neo-Nazi website.
The website, which is so abhor-
rent that the Daily Tar Heel
forbids publication of its name,
was one of the main organizers
behind the Unite the Right
rally in Charlottesville.
My greatest fear is that in
being overly cautious about
the letter of the law, UNCs
administration will cost
someone their life. Students
of color who have been
speaking out against this
statue for years are at great-
est risk of violence from white
supremacist groups.
Please, remove Silent Sam.
Remove it tonight. Remove
it and bear whatever legal
consequences may come. The
cost could not be greater than
the potential loss of life we
face as long as Sam continues
to cast its shadow over the
gateway to our campus.
Sometimes, doing the
right thing comes with conse-
quences. Do it anyway.

When I opened Chancellor
Folts email, I was expecting
an outpouring of sympathy for
the events that happened in
Charlottesville this weekend.
While that did happen, I was
also invited to read a nuanced
legal explanation that explains
in great detail that hate speech
is, in fact, legal.
I want to begin with a
disclaimer and it is that I
believe strongly in the right
to free speech, including hate
speech.
Now, I want to say how
inappropriate it is to choose
this moment to remind us
of that, days after a white
supremacist killed Heather
Heyer. A white supremacist
murdered a woman this
weekend and the universitys
response is to remind us
that his opinions are legal
and protected, and have a
place on this campus if that
becomes the case. While that
may be the truth, the remind-
er is distasteful, inappropri-
ate, and poorly timed.
Imagine a husband kills
his cheating wife, and instead
of reading about the trag-
edy of her death, you read
about why cheating is wrong.
Objectively, yes, cheating is
bad but is now really the killed by a home invader over
time to educate us on all the
reasons why?
The page that Chancellor
Folt linked us to is titled,
Message About First
Amendment Protections,
Outside Speakers, Confederate
Monument. It cites The Free
Speech Act, passed by the
North Carolina Legislature at
the end of June 2017.
The Free Speech Act
requires the University to
implement a range of disci-
plinary actions for students
and employees who substan-
tially interfere with another
persons protected free speech
rights. This includes protests
that limit the ability of others
to hear a speaker.
You cannot ask us not to
gather. You cannot ask us
not to speak up, together
because we truly are strongest
together. Anyone has the
right to spew hate, but if that
person is outnumbered by
many, we have the right to

The police only protect
Silent Sam at rally

I want to make a some-
thing absolutely clear; the
only violent participants in
Tuesday nights protest were
the police, under orders from
the state, attempting to fulfill
their mission to protect and
serve. Only tonight, they
didnt seem interested in
protecting and serving the
groups most in need of it.
The police were not protect-
ing Muslims. This failure, less
than three years after three
Muslim students were shot and
a parking dispute. The police
were not protecting black men.
This, while in an undergradu-
ate class of 18,000, fewer than
700 are African-American
men. A product of educational
and social systems which are
more interested in detain-
ing and imprisoning men of
color than protecting them.
The police were not protecting
trans students. This, while our
President insists on institution-
alizing the very hate that con-
tinues to put their lives at risk.
In fact, rather than protect-
ing these groups, the police
detained, harassed, assaulted,
shoved, and attacked them.
So who were the police
protecting? Silent Sam.
A statue whose very exis-
tence is in explicit memorial to
the violence that the state has
perpetrated against communi-
ties of color for over a century.

Excuses to keep Silent
Sam do not stack up

Silent Sam has been debat-
ed in The Daily Tar Heel since
a plurality of voices first arose
in public discourse in the
south during the Civil Rights
movement. UNC adminis-
trators should stop hiding
behind excuses and act.
I have heard rationales
about:
A) history and heritage,
but why celebrate a history
mythologized to hide its most
egregious aspect: the war was
fought to justify the enslave-
ment of 4 million human
beings because of their color?
B) States rights, but for
what? The answer is slav-
ery. Articles of secession
of Mississippi and South
Carolina state so quite clearly.
As a UNC alum and a
white guy from the south
whose ancestors fought for
the Confederacy, Id suggest:
Take Silent Sam down as a
disgraceful reminder of when
Lost Cause myths coincided
with the rise of Jim Crow laws,
the KKK and lynchings; or
contextualize him with the
real history of our communi-
ties in a monument overshad-
owing him with the horrors
of slavery, racism and white
terrorism built on a process
of inclusive dialogue by the
UNC community.
In my professional life, I
have worked with people put in
concentration camps, women
raped and young men recruit-
ed into fighting for the wrong
ideas for the same principles
of racial or ethnic superiority
that underlie this monument.
Take Silent Sam down now, or
build a monument around him
which tells the whole story.

The General Assembly and
Governor Pat McCrory prohib-
ited the removal of Confederate
monuments by law in 2015.
In light of recent events, and
to ensure that those who favor
Confederate monuments can
keep seeing them, I have a
modest proposal.
I propose installing a
replica of the fallen Durham
courthouse statue on
McCrorys lawn, or the near-
est public sidewalk. As a pro-
tector of these monuments,
I am sure he will not mind.
If he declines, Im sure the
NC legislators who voted for
the bill will accept their own
copies.

their defense of our institu-
tion against Hurston Hall.
Should they object, they
will simply have to learn to
embrace our history, as the
emblems cannot be removed.
Alternatively, they might sim-
ply overturn the ban.
But why stop there? Our
legislators should be reminded
of the Lost Cause through
statues in the restrooms at
the General Assembly. Our
General Assembly has decided
to make restrooms so safe
through HB 2 that rabble-
rousers would not dare trans-
gress in that safe space. The
statues would be protected
twice over.
Since our state has already
seen fit to erect Confederate
monuments in places other
than graves, museums, and
battlefields, this memorabilia
has just as much place in the
NCGAs hallowed halls and
stalls as they do in front of
courthouses or on the UNC
campus. Lets make sure our
history is not erased.

The very purpose of the
Confederacy was to preserve
the institution of slavery. And
the purpose of Confederate
remembrance is to embrace
those principles of white
supremacy. Silent Sam and
other statues were erected
in attempt to revise history.
Keeping them up does not help
us remember our past, but
instead creates false memory in
which racism didnt exist.
This fake history prevents
us from being able to under-
stand our present, in which
racism is clearly alive and well.
Putting the statues up was an
effort to erase history. Taking
them down moves us one step
closer to better understanding
our past and hopefully making
a better future.
I would like to remind
Chancellor Folt that UNC
students have been on the
vanguard of social changes for
many decades, and our state
is the better for it. Even stu-
dents that never picked up a
sign or chanted a slogan ben-
efitted from experiencing this
place of learning and possibil-
ity. The entire state benefits
from the optimism, creativity,
and change that emanates
from UNC year after year.
This legacy of activism
and social change is part of
what makes UNC and North
Carolina great. Taking Silent
Sam down will be another
step in forging our better
future together.

Here is a solution to the
Silent Sam problem:
Have a statue of one of
the US Black Troops from
North Carolina, holding his
rifle, facing south, in front of
Silent Sam. This way, Silent
Sam would not need to be
removed or even moved. He
would simply be balanced by
a another memorial of histo-
ry. Blacks served in the Union
Army as Colored Troops, as
they were called.
There were even Union
Colored Troop regiments
form North Carolina.

When I was a student at
UNC, in the early 70s, the
only concern we had about
Silent Sam was whether or
not his gun would go off.
The story was that if a virgin
walked by, his gun would
go off. But then we had
dealt with desegregation in
our schools, Vietnam, and
whether or not we would be
bombed by Russia.
I am sorry that todays stu-
dents do not respect the past
and learn from it more. The
Civil War in our country was
devastating to both sides.
It left families torn apart,
people without homes, land,
work or even food.
To tear down statutes,
change the names of build-
ings or take chapters out of
history books, you are say-
ing that none of that mat-
tered. But it did. We should
be learning from it not
destroying it. The things
students do today will be the
history of tomorrow. How do
you want to be remembered?
How would you feel if your
grandchildren want to tear
down and change what you
are trying to build?
To destroy the remnants
of our history, to tear down
the reminders of what people
(good or bad) fought for, is
like killing those people all
over again and repeating
their mistakes. Leave the past
where it is and work to build
the future, not tear it down.

I am writing to urge that

Silent Sam remain where it is
and as it is.
I am a proud Carolina
alum, former US Ambassador
with 30 years of overseas ser-
vice in 11 countries, including
Iraq, the Haiti earthquake
and, if it makes any difference
to prove in no way am I moti-
vated by racism, 10 years liv-
ing and working on economic
development in Africa.
It is too easy and facile to
equate Confederate monu-
ments per se with racism. I
know my own North Carolina
familys history with the Civil
War. They/we owned no slaves
and were certainly not fighting
for slavery during that terrible
conflict. They were fighting
mostly because the other side
was down here.
When I was a young kid in
Winston-Salem, I remember
listening to my great grand-
father speaking about the
terrible hardships of growing
up in Reconstruction-period
North Carolina. The point is
that it is too easy and inaccu-
rate to automatically equate
symbols of our history for
better or worse with simply
nefarious and negative values.
I think Silent Sam should
be seen as representative of
the many UNC students of
the day who fought and died
according to the values and
belief that they saw no
matter how we judge them
today as right, fitting and
even noble.
Please consider taking the
long and reflective view and
not act in a spasm of short-
sighted emotion.

TO THE EDITOR: 8/22
I am a veteran of the sit-ins
for civil rights here in Chapel
Hill during the 1963-64 aca-
demic year. I was arrested
on six counts of trespass-
ing and resisting arrest and
spent almost a month in the
Chapel Hill jail at the corner
of Columbia and Rosemary
Streets.
I am also a native North
Carolinian and thus, a
native Southerner. As
Southerners, my wife and I
once walked the heartbreak-
ing path of Picketts Charge
at Gettysburg, right up to
the split rail fence where so
many young men from North
Carolina died about a hun-
dred years before our sit-ins.
The combination of these
two identities makes the issue
of Silent Sam an excruciating
one for me.
For some time, my prefer-
ence would have been to leave
the statue in place but to pair
it with an equally large and
impressive monument to the

The Lincoln students were
the bravest and most inspir-
ing people I ever met, and
it was an honor to be in jail
with them.
But now I believe both that
Sam should be removed in a
dignified way to some other
location on campus, and that
the monument to the young
civil rights activists should also
be erected. Monuments are not
merely historical markers but
also honor our central values,
which should include most our
shared value and dignity as Tar
Heels and as Americans.

Does the country learns
from its history?

Some are railing against the
cost of guarding Silent Sam
on the campus of UNC. Isnt
it worth that small amount to
preserve peace and prevent
possible wanton destruction of
the statue?
When many look at the
statue they see a symbol of
the Confederacy that enslaved
black people for generations.
I do not see a general with
epaulettes riding a beautiful
horse; rather I see an ordi-
nary soldier with an empty
ammunition pouch. He may
be thinking of returning to
an impoverished family and
country and of his fellow sol-
diers who died in the war.
Silent Sam makes one
think of the stupidity of war
and that nobody comes out of a
war without injuries to the soul
or of the devastation wrought.
He reminds me that we
as a nation never learn from
history but keep repeating it
over and over.

It seems protesters call-
ing for the removal of Silent
Sam and other Confederate
memorials have ignited a
movement to remove memo-
rials to anyone who has done
or said something offensive.
For example, a candidate for
mayor of New York City has
called for closure of Ulysses
S. Grants tomb because she
said he was anti-Semitic. By
logical extension, if racist
statements made by someone
at the dedication of a memo-
rial to students of UNC who
died in battle as Confederate
soldiers justifies its removal,
surely the following state-
ment made by this famous
public figure justifies removal
of monuments to him: I am
not, nor have ever been in
favor of bringing about in

I am related to one of the
300+ Confederate Carolina
alumni in whose honor Silent
Sam was supposedly erected,
as well as members of the
Daughters of the Confederacy,
the same group that funded
its installation in 1913.
Silent Sam must go.
My family has a long
history at UNC and North
Carolina and a deep affec-
tion for both. It frustrates me
when people with no real con-
nection to Carolina insist that
a monument that has upset so
many people for so long must
remain in place in the name
of my ancestors. Every living
descendant I know (most are
also UNC alumni) agrees that
they do not want this monu-
ment to remain in its current
location if it causes any mem-
bers of our community to feel
hurt or disrespected.
I cant understand how
anyone can say that their
tepid nostalgic affection for a
monument to strangers who
died over 150 years ago is
more important than the fact
that this monument causes
genuine pain to any of our fel-
low living humans today.
Keeping this monument in
its current location of high-
est honor on campus sends
the message that the dead
are more important than the
living and that pride is more
important than kindness.
The future of this state
and our nation will be in the
hands of the UNC students
who set foot on this campus
every fall. How can we ask
them to love Carolina when
this statue sends the message
that Carolina doesnt love
them?

Its no coincidence that
Silent Sam remains on cam-
pus while the UNC Board of
Governors is likely to silence
the work of the Center for
Civil Rights at its board meet-
ing on Sept. 8th.
Silent Sam teaches us that
white supremacy is alive and
well and that people of color,
especially African Americans,
dont count. Telling the
Centers lawyers to end litiga-
tion sends the same message
that the University shouldnt
provide legal services to low-
wealth communities of color.
Its time to take an unequivo-
cal stand against white suprem-
acy and the symbols that
uphold it. Lets demand that
the UNC Board of Governors
preserve the CCR and that
University leaders help us to
finally put Silent Sam to rest.

I am writing to urge
Chancellor Folt and the UNC-
Chapel Hill Board of Trustees
to take immediate action to
remove the Silent Sam statue
and reconsider the mora-
torium on the renaming of
campus buildings. We are at
a critical moment in the his-
tory of our campus; visionary
and courageous leadership is
needed now more than ever.
As someone who has been
on the UNC faculty for over
twelve years, I am dismayed
by the drastic change in the
campus climate related to
issues of diversity and social
justice in recent years. When I
first arrived on campus, there
were intense discussions of
the newly-installed Unsung
Founders Memorial and the
George Moses Horton dormi-
tory, which was renamed for
an enslaved African-American
poet who sold his writings to
UNC students. Fast forward
twelve years and we are now
embroiled in avoidable, albeit
painful discussions and pro-
tests about a statue that has
been the source of controversy
for generations of UNC stu-
dents and faculty. As a faculty
member of color, it is dis-
heartening to have University
leaders who do not seem to

While many have correctly
pointed to the shameful con-
nection between the erection
of Silent Sam and the Jim
Crow regime of racial segrega-
tion, we need to remember
Michelle Alexanders chal-
lenge to uncover continuities
between the Jim Crow era and
our own, which she calls the
New Jim Crow. But wait. Isnt swiftly and unambigu-

eral diversity and inclusion, as

Sams face you might suspect
its not. With Chapel Hill as its
center, 13 percent of Orange
County is African-American
while Orange Countys prison

ing to local public defenders.
And UNC? The incoming
frosh classes have been 8-9
percent Black, about one
third of the African-American
population of North Carolina.

Whats Going On?
The University was handed
a get out of jail free card by
Governor Roy Cooperand
declined to use it. WTF?
Even more baffling is the
fact that we requested the
card. Spurred by a letter
from Chapel Hill mayor Pam
Hemminger, someone (I
assume it was our Chancellor,
Carol Folt, but do not know
what transpired behind the
scenes) managed a feat of
unalloyed diplomatic bril-
liance: a letter to the gover-
nor co-signed by Margaret
Spellings, president of the
UNC system, Carol Folt, Lou
Bissette, chair of the systems
Board of Governors, and
Haywood Cochrane, chair of
the UNC-Chapel Hill Board
of Trustees. That letter, citing
safety concerns, asked for a
ruling about excepting Silent
Sam from the 2015 law forbid-
ding the removal of historical
monuments on public land.
The Governor responded
shadow, she cant act decisive-
ously, authorizing Silent Sams
removal. I fully expected to
arrive on campus Tuesday
morning and find that UNC, in
a move echoing recent actions
at the University of Texas, had
removed the statue during the
night. Instead, the statue was
surrounded by a double row of
fences and a sign was posted
stipulating proper behavior
in its presence. And then the
University, later in the day,
turned its back on the ruling it
requested, and stated it didnt
agree with the Governors
interpretation of the law, even
while agreeing that campus
would be safer without the
Confederate memorial.
The mind reels. The chief
Executive officer of the state
tells you that a certain action
is legitimate and lawful.
But you decide he might be
wrong. What could motivate
such a decision? Clearly, if
the governor gives you the go
ahead, you are not going to
be prosecuted by his branchs
attorney general if you pro-
ceed. The legislature will,
doubtless, be unhappy, but
they have no prosecutorial
powers. True, the University
could, I guess, be sued over
the matter, and could suffer at
the hands of a vindictive leg-
islature somewhere down the
line. But should such possible
ill effects over-rule immediate
safety concerns, not to men-
tion the poisonous message
the statue sends every day? I
dont think so.

lute right to free speech on

to take down the Ys signs.
Finally, as one last dem-
onstration of a determina-
tion to act in mysterious and
secretive ways, we get the
announcement of a new pro-
vost. The move took every-
one on campus by surprise.
Whats worse: we get a new
provost with a complete abro-
gation of any procedure for
his appointment. No naming
of an interim, no formation of
a search committee, no public
meetings with finalists for the
position, no consultation with
anyone on campus.
The Chancellor is acting
like a tinpot autocrat. On the
one hand, afraid of her own
killed by the Nazis. She sur-
ly when she is handed a green
light by the Governor. On the
other hand, she has isolated
herself from the university
community, interacting with
us through statements that it
takes a Talmudic scholar or a
Kremlinologist to decipher,
and embracing non-trans-
parency. Whats going on?
Damned if I know.
Heres my message to Carol
Folt. We the faculty, students
and staff of this university
are your partners in the edu-
cational mission of this great
university. We are not danger-
ous, unruly and unpredictable
subjects who need to be man-
aged. Stop being afraid of us
and start working with us.

that separated the enslaved
peoples of the Soviet east

served in combat in World
War II in the 1940s in the
fight against Nazi oppres-
sion and genocide. One was
a B24 navigator who flew
many perilous bombing mis-
sions over German from a
base in England and one
was wounded by German 88
shrapnel as an infantryman
in France after D-Day. Our
father and two of his brothers
served in combat in France
in the final US and allied
offensive against the Germans
that ended World War I on
November 11, 1918.
I am daily reminded of
what the defeat of Hitlers
Nazis in 1945 meant to the
world and the US by the pres-
ence of a vibrant 93-year-old
neighbor, most of whose
Jewish family in Poland were
140 characters each can only
vived by hiding in a Catholic
familys farmhouse attic for 22
months. After the war, she and
her husband became immi-
grants to the US and then US
citizens, while raising a family
who has contributed signifi-
cantly to this nation.
During the 20th century
tens of millions of young men,
like the seven brothers in
two generations of my family,
served in the military of the
US and its allies. The ulti-
mate sacrifices of millions of
them are affirmed by the mili-
tary cemeteries such as those
across Europe, at Arlington
and at Pearl Harbor.
The fragile and interrelated
nature of our nations domestic
and international affairs were
deliberated by John Jay, one of
Americas visionary Founding
Fathers and the first Chief
Justice of the US Supreme
Court, in a Federalist essay in
1787. He argued convincingly
against a proposal for several
nations of adjacent states on the
American continent and for a
single United States of America,
which was established by the
1789 US Constitution that has
served as a guiding light for our
nation ever since. If one substi-
tutes todays China and Russia
for Britain, France and Spain,
the world powers of 1787, then
Jays advice about our inter-
national relationships applies
equally well today.

his first months as President
have been frustrating and
challenging after his finan-
cially successful leadership for
several decades of a business
enterprise with apparently no
independent board of directors
and no shareholders other than

On January 20, 2017, however,
he became President of the
nation with the largest econo-
my in the world, and became
Commander in Chief of the
worlds most powerful and
sophisticated military force.
Our nation also has a free
and independent press that for
better or worse since George
Washingtons time has moni-
tored, reported and editorial-
ized on the function of the indi-
viduals who have been elected
to govern this exceptional and
still evolving American experi-
ment in democracy.
The Presidents tweets have
undoubtedly been enjoyed and
cheered by many, but tweets of
spread resentments and dis-
cord when used for diplomatic
negotiations or policy making.
The wider consequences of
his tweeting, his spontaneous
pronouncements and many
of his policy changes have
distanced him from many in
the US government he needs
to carry out his policies. They
have also alienated many of
the USs allies around the
world and have emboldened
our international adversaries.
To paraphrase John Jays 1787
words, what a poor, pitiful
figure America has become in
the eyes of other nations and
how liable have we become to
their contempt and outrage.
Many hoped that the frus-
trations of the President in his
first months would be used as
lessons about the changes that
were needed to unite and gov-
ern this American democracy
that has been envied around
the world for well over two
centuries. In spite of recent
changes in his advisors he has
daily demonstrated his inabil-
ity or unwillingness to help
achieve our Founding Fathers
dream of a free and united
people and an efficient and
well administrated United
States government. I thus
respectfully urge the President
to consider resignation as the
most responsible and honor-
able course of action to save the
Presidency, our democracy and
our world from catastrophe.

Confederates today

In 2015 after a white
supremacist massacred nine
people at a black church in
South Carolina the General
Assembly passed a law block-
ing local governments from
removing them without the
states permission. There are
about a hundred monuments
to the Confederacy in North
Carolina. They werent erected
immediately after the war
to honor the fallen; rather,
most were built decades later
to send a message to African
Americans about who was
really in charge. Silent Sam
is a memorial to the 321 UNC
alumni who died during the
Civil War. During its dedica-
tion, former Confederate sol-
dier and industrialist Julian
Carr recalled that just one
hundred yards away, he had
horse-whipped a Negro
wench, until her skirt hung
in shreds, because upon the
streets of this quiet village
she had publicly insulted and
maligned a Southern lady.
Confederate monuments have
always been symbols of white
supremacy. The heyday of
monument building, between
1890 and 1920, was also a time
of extreme racial violence, as
Southern whites pushed back
against what little progress
had been made by African-
Americans. Take it down.
Let the dead lie still in
their graves. They already
fought in one war. Dont
enlist them for the one youre
fighting today.

hand, the statue is a symbol
of historical fact, and when
we as a society go down the
road of trying to erase facts we

dangerous and fascist in its
own right; having it on public

conducive to further thought
and learning. Whatever comes
of Sam, I hope any decisions
are not based on raw emotion
but are carefully reasoned,
considerate, and arising from
diverse viewpoints.

I watched in amazement
the video from the Silent
Sam protests on campus. The
group was chanting the same
line as the communist group,
Workers World Party, who was
responsible for taking down

old Durham County court-
house. Cops and the Klan go
hand in hand. What would
inspire the young students
to use the same meme as the
WWP - unless the protest was
instigated by the WWP?
Durham is the same major-
ity minority city as Houston.
In Durham, police officers
protect more black people
every single day than any
other group. I know, my 24 yr.
old son is one of them. Would
these students, with little or no
real world experience, explain
to me how their chant helps
anyone? Does their collectivist
chant mimicking that of com-
munists who are responsible
for the deaths of millions
across the world save any
lives? How about in Houston?
Was the police officer who
died today leaving his home to
help with rescues basing his
decisions on whom to rescue

wide could lose access to free con-
traceptives through employer health
coverage if a Trump administration
plan to alter an Affordable Care Act
mandate is finalized.
The changes proposed by the
Trump administration would allow
any employer to apply for an exemp-
tion to covering contraceptive care
based on religious beliefs or moral
convictions.
The draft revision, leaked in
May, has been praised by religious
freedom advocates, who have been
engaged in years of legal battles with
the federal government over the
mandate.
Tami Fitzgerald, executive direc-
tor of N.C. Values Coalition, said
opposition to the mandate is about
more than religious or moral objec-
tions.

ment to mandate that anyone has to
cover contraceptives in their health

Labor Day alleviates city parking pressure

As Labor Day weekend
approaches, many University
students can look forward
to spending time idling in
Chapel Hill traffic on their
way home to visit family.
For employees of Franklin
Street businesses who often
pay for parking, the holiday
weekend means free spots
that are usually occupied by
students become much more
available.
Clara Vengoechea, bar-
tender and floor manager at
Spankys Restaurant and Bar,
said that managers, head chefs
and sous-chefs have guaran-
teed free parking spaces in
Turtle Lot on North Columbia
Street, but space is scarce.
For other employees,
theres a pay lot for $1.50 an
hour and two lots for $1.00
an hour, Vengoechea said.
On days where parking
spots are more in demand,
such as when home foot-
ball games are scheduled,
Vengoechea said parking
costs jump much higher.
On game days when Im
not managing, I pay $20 to
get in the lot, so you have to
pay to work, she said. Ive
gotten to work early and sat
in Starbucks for an hour just
so I dont have to pay the fee.

Hill, said parking is free all
day Sunday and on Labor
Day, but hes heard com-
plaints from many Chapel
Hill workers that the regular
parking charges mean they
have to pay to get to work.
Banks said this concern will
likely be alleviated as many
students who use free parking
decks around Franklin Street
go home for Labor Day week-
end, opening up lots of free
spaces for commuting employ-
ees of local businesses.
Although he expects
an influx of fans for this
Saturdays football game,
Banks said the large number
of students leaving town for
the weekend should mean
parking will remain available
and affordable for local
employees.
Even with the football
game that were having on
Saturday, I would assume that
on Monday there would be
plenty of parking throughout
the town, he said.
Several shops and restau-
rants around Chapel Hill
have their own lots or spaces
nearby, providing employees
who drive to work a place to
park for free.

For students, Labor Day means no
class, and no class means a golden oppor-
tunity to venture out into Chapel Hill and
eat good food.
Trey Cleveland, the head executive chef
at Top of the Hill, said he thinks a good
Labor Day meal depends on where youre
located.
If Im at the coast, Im hopefully eat-
ing fresh cod fish and oysters, he said. If
Im at home, Im smoking pork shoulders.
And if Im out and about say here in
Chapel Hill Im probably going to do
Als Burger Shack, Buns, Trolly Stop Hot
Dogs or Sup Dogs.
If you stop by Top of the Hill,
Cleveland said that their locally grown
beef burgers are the way to go.
Ruby Brinkerhoff, the manager of
Mediterranean Deli, said she doesnt
think Labor Day really has a food theme,
but that its important to eat summer
foods while you still can.
Id definitely get fresh salads that
involve vegetables that are only grown
here during the summer, she said. Its
when everything is growing, everything is
in bloom and coming out of the ground.
Its really a wonderful time.
Med Deli specializes in many salads,
but not everything is available year-
round.
Id recommend the peach salad, which
I really love, she said. We only have it
here during the summer, but people miss
it all year round.
Meanwhile, Greg Overbeck, a co-own-
er of Chapel Hill Restaurant Group, said
he thinks the brown sugar baby back ribs
at Spankys Restaurant and Bar is a great
Labor Day dish.
Its extremely popular and fits in with
the holiday feel, he said. First, we dry
rub them with brown sugar, broil them
and serve them with barbecue sauce,
which makes it scrumptious.
Although Labor Day is an opportunity
to chow down, its also a chance to spend
time with family and friends as summer
fades into fall and the school year starts
up again.
My daughter has a soccer tournament
in Greenville, South Carolina, over the
weekend, but Ill be back on Monday,
Overbeck said. Ill work a little bit and
then spend time with my wife and kids at
home.
However, Brinkerhoff said that Labor
Day marks the start of a renewed energy
in Chapel Hill since students are back on
campus. Suddenly, Franklin Street has
more feet pounding its pavement and the
tables at local restaurants start filling up
again.
When all the students come back, life
kind of revives itself around here, she
said. Its so cool to have all these people
here. Theres so many things going on and
people to see.

Campus protests break
out across the state as
tensions rise.

In the wake of protests over
Confederate monuments in
Chapel Hill and Durham, stu-
dents at Appalachian State
University and Salem College are
taking a stand against controver-
sial acts on their campuses.
Last week at Appalachian
State, members of Identity
Evropa, a white supremacist
group, hung a banner on the uni-
versitys campus before the first
day of class in an effort to recruit
or intimidate students.
According to their Twitter
account, Identity Evropa has
been active at other colleges
such as the University of Texas
at Austin and Long Beach City
College in California.
Anderson Clayton, student
body president at Appalachian
State, said the banner on cam-
pus was up for about 20 minutes
before the Carolina Mountain
Redneck Revolt, a group not
associated with the university,
removed the banner and posted
a message on Facebook assert-
ively telling Identity Evropa such
acts are not tolerated.
Even though the banner
was a recruitment method and
not necessarily a direct threat
in regards to speech and what
it said, the organization itself is
still a threat to student safety,
specifically those that identify
with marginalized identities on
our campus, Clayton said.
Clayton said students were
afraid, and many were angry at
the lack of strong response from
administration and Appalachian
States Chancellor Sheri Everts.
Appalachian States Student
Government Association plans
to host an event focusing on hate
crimes on college campuses and
encouraging students to support
each other.
Students at Salem College
have also been working to
ensure marginalized voices are
protected at their school.
Jessi Bowman, a senior at
Salem College, said in April
students organized a sit-in to
protest a variety of topics such
as a lack of support from their
counseling center, racism in
classrooms and school traditions
stemming from Salem Colleges
slave-owning founder.
Bowman said there have not
been any formal protests this
fall, which partially stems from
the administrations sudden
and comprehensive protest
policy issued last April requiring
students to get pre-approval in
order to protest.
I think its really important
that students arent being sup-
pressed in what theyre told to
believe, I think thats an impor-
tant part of the college experi-
ence sort of figuring out what
you believe, what you want to
believe, what you did believe and
now might not, she said. I think
thats what the space has become,
is for college to be a place for
learning and of challenges and
challenging your own beliefs.
Bowman is also chair of Salem
Colleges History Society and said
the administration responded
to protests by creating a history
committee to modify the schools
traditions and make them more
inclusive and truthful.
Carter said those who would
rather see a regression of cultur-
al progress have been embold-
ened by the political landscape.
He said opponents of universi-
ties remaining bastions of liberal
free thought and national politi-
cal rhetoric has created the illu-
sion of a license to hate.
So the rats can come out of
the sewer, Carter said. And
everyone feels like theyre
allowed to use hate speech
because the president does.
Clayton also said politics
have made it seem like hateful
acts are acceptable, but college
campuses standing at the center
of cultural protests is not a new
development.
I think this has been going
on for years, she said. And the
media has just decided now it is
important to recognize students
of color and people with margin-
alized identities are being targeted
on college campuses.
