Health and Wellness Curriculum

7th Grade

National Health Education Standards (NHES)


Comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.
Analyze the influences of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health
behaviors.
Access valid information, products, and services to enhance health.
Use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.
Use decision-making skills to enhance health.
Use goal-setting skills to enhance health.
Practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce risks.
Advocate for personal, family, and community health.

Social and Emotional Health


Objectives- The student will be able to:
A. Identify the causes, symptoms, and intervention of (eating disorders, to include anorexia, bulimia, binge
eating)
B. Describe the role society plays in the perception of normal body image
C. Explain causes and identify signs of depression
D. Cite prevention and intervention strategies for depression
E. Examine the impact of bullying/cyberbullying on the individual, family, and community
a. Consequences of bullying such as depression, violence, etc.
b. Perspective of bully, victim, bystander, upstander
c. Strategies for handling bullying/cyberbullying
F. **Summarize prevention and intervention strategies for human trafficking
G. Demonstrate the ability to seek help when necessary
H. **Explain the term digital footprint and its long term and/legal implications
a. Introduce the idea of global citizenship and the global market due to technology

Nutrition and Fitness


Objectives- The student will be able to:
A. Discover, evaluate, and utilize health information, products, and services related to healthy nutrition
a. Nutritional requirements
b. Dietary guidelines
c. Sports nutrition and fitness

Disease Prevention and Control


Objectives- The student will be able to:
A. Describe how lifestyle, family history, environment, and other risk factors/behaviors are related to
physical health and overall wellness
a. Controllable/uncontrollable risk factors: influence of media messages, environmental exposure,
and household products/inhalants
b. Protective factors: regular checkups, immunizations and screening, diet and weight
management, exercise, and rest, and stress management
B. Identify prevention and intervention methods for common non-communicable diseases (Heart
disease/cardiovascular disease, cancer, to include skin cancer, diabetes, gum disease, osteoporosis,
asthma, obesity, etc.)

Tobacco, Alcohol and Other Drugs


Objectives- The student will be able to:
A. Distinguish between healthy and unhealthy use of prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs
(consequences of prolonged use)
B. Describe the effects and impact of tobacco, vaping, opioid use, prescription drug use, and alcohol on
the individual, family, and society
C. Identify the consequences of underage drinking (Physical and psychological addiction, death, legal
consequences, drinking and driving)
D. Demonstrate skills that promote a personal commitment to remain alcohol, tobacco, vaping, opioid,
prescription drug-free
E. Identify gateway behaviors
Notes:
Research has shown that normative education and resistance skills are the most effective components
of drug prevention curriculum
Students should not be placed in the role of perpetrator in role-play situations

Human Sexuality
Objectives- The student will be able to:
A. Explain the anatomy and physiology of the human reproductive system
a. Male: internal and external structures, sperm production, erection, ejaculation
b. Female: internal and external structures, egg maturation, ovulation, menstruation
B. **Apply personal and interpersonal skills to support sexual health (Values, decision making,
communication, assertiveness, conflict resolution, communication with parents/guardian)
C. **Review examples of sexual harassment and sexual assault
a. Strategies
b. Reporting
c. Interventions
D. **Explain the term abstinence and emphasize it as the healthiest behavior for youth
E. Define sexuality as a dimension of a person, not just sexual behavior
a. Role of family values in choosing abstinence
b. Reasons to abstain
F. **Describe the prevention, symptoms, and treatment of sexually transmitted infections to
include HIV/AIDS, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, HPV/genital warts, genital herpes, etc.
G. Explain the menstrual cycle and its relationship to conception and pregnancy
Notes:
Prior to beginning instruction on this sensitive topic, it is important to establish ground rules that
promote open and honest discussion and create a safe classroom environment for such discussion.
** All students will receive instruction in this area, regardless of whether or not they are enrolled in a Wellness
course. Most of these items are state mandated.
