582 AMBRUS, BT AL.: NASAL SEPTAL ABSCESS,
The drain and finger cots remain in place until drainage has ceased,
usually 2-8 days, In uncomplicated cases, intravenous antibiotics should be
maintained for 8-5 days, followed by appropriate oral antibioties for 7-10
ays.
SUMMARY.
‘This retrospective review of 16 cases in a 10 year experience shows NSA
to be an uncommon entity. The cases are examined in detail for history,
physical findings, laboratory data, and method of treatment, The incidence,
diagnosis, bacteriology, and pathophysiology of NSA are discussed. The
predominance of NSA''seen in this series seems to be related to the time
of presentation and obtaining of careful cultures,
Treatment is based on a rationale involving: 1, needle aspiration for
diagnostic confirmation and culture material; 2. intravenous antibiotics
based on Gram’s stain smear and age of the patient; and 9. surgical drain
age once adequate CNS levels of antibiotics have been attained. Drainage
should include both excision of a portion of mucoperichondrium and place-
ment of a drain. Immediate therapy is indicated in an attempt to avoid
Potential complications such as eosinetie deformity or intracranial infec-
on,
