" I decided to take a year out before university. I spent my first few
months working to earn enough money to travel and in March, I left
for Costa Rica. I am currently volunteering with an organisation
called GVI that runs a childcare project In a disadvantaged
community here. It's been one of the most incredible, authentic,
humbling and happiest experiences of my life. I'm loving every second
of it. After this, I'm heading on to Huay Pakoot in Thailand to help
rehabilitate elephants and then I have my course in Warwick
university which I start in October. The decision to take a gap year
was undoubtedly the right one for me and I would recommend it to
anyone who's considered taking one. I've learned an incredible
amount about myself and my capabilities and have come to realise
first hand that the lessons we receive through life experience are
undoubtedly as valuable as those learned through formal education. "

" Since leaving Newtown last year, I've started college in the Cork

getting a degree while doing what I love. Shout out to Ms O' Connor

PRESIDENTS REPORT
I consider it a great honour to write to you as the president of
the Old Scholars Association. For the last 21 years I have been
involved in Newtown School from student to staff member and
there is no doubt that Newtown School has had a huge part to
play in changing the direction of my life. The sense of community
and family that is fostered tirelessly by all the staff can give great
comfort and stability to any student who enters through the
gates.

I was, to say the least, not the easiest of pupils to grace the halls
of Newtown School and I admit I devoted quite a lot of my time
and effort trying to find ways to escape from School. However it
was through the persistence of some inspiring members of staff,
who saw something of value in me that at the time I was unable
to see in myself, gave me the drive to push forward and continue
on to where I am today. It is this belief in yourself that Newtown
School instils, this is what changes lives. This is not just for the
elite student or sportsperson but is available to all who are willing
to accept what Newtown School has to offer.

I have at times felt nervous over the years that Newtown Sara Lee OBrien receiving the chain of office from outgoing

MY RECOLLECTIONS OF NEWTOWN SCHOOL FIRE
22nd January 1966 Jane Elizabeth Carter
Flash bulb memories of pivotal moments in life can become the
focus of associated memories of a particular dramatic event
experienced. I leant that piece of information studying psychology,
so it must be true. For me the Fire that destroyed the boys
dorms and wash lobbies that were above the dining room and old
woodwork room was one of those events.

My arrival at Newtown School was a totally unplanned casual event.

In the Easter holidays of 1965 I had decided to visit a school friend
who had moved to Dublin. I had never been to Ireland, but a work
colleague, Louis McKevitt, suggested we travel together as he was
going home to Carlingford, but the following week he was going to a
job interview at a place called Newtown School in Waterford.

He suggested that if we met up again I could see a bit more of

Ireland if I went by train with him to Waterford. So, unplanned and
effortlessly my life in Ireland began. Views of endless green fields
flew past the train windows giving a vivid impression of the Emerald
Isle. Finally, the train pulled into Waterford station. While walking
up Newtown School drive we saw a man doing a bit of gardening,
edging the grass, pulling up weeds etc. I suggested we ask him the
way to the office as a gardener would surely know the way. The
gardener turned out to be the Vice Principal, FEF! Oops my first
mistake. Some first impressions are not what they seem. Later I
learnt what an amazingly dedicated man Mr Foster was and that he
knew everything that moved in the school, even if it wasnt moving.

Then I saw some girls in the link building who appeared to be

cleaning windows and doing other household tasks. With memories
of reading Charles Dickens Christmas Carol I was under the
impression that these were pupils who had been abandoned by their
parents for the holidays. Second mistake. I already knew that this
was a boarding school, but hadnt realised that there would be girls
living in as residential maids. Without further ado, we found our own
way to the now very familiar entrance door.

The headmaster, Maurice Wigham, arrived to interview Louis and I mistress on duty had to fill the piggies for these young girls. This

and all the boys were fast asleep. Fortunately, the lights were still
working, but the situation was dangerous and evacuation was
urgent. The familiar bell woke the boys and thinking it was morning
they began to head into the wash lobby. None of them noticed the
fire above them so there was no panic. Still drowsy with interrupted
sleep they were sent down the stairs to safety.

Louis now went back into the dorms to check that all the boys were
out and non-had crawled sleepily back to bed. The lights failed as
he did so and the ceiling was now well ablaze. Very few boys had
anything on them other than pyjamas and possibly slippers, but they
were taken straight over to the William Penn building classrooms
and a roll call was taken. All were there. Possibly saved from panic the ground. It had taken till 5.30 to extinguish the fire. As we tried

NEW HOCKEY PITCH AT NEWTOWN
2016 and 2017 have been exciting years
for hockey at Newtown. As reported in the
2016 magazine a new, updated synthetic
playing surface was being installed. Few
were prepared to believe that after the
Board of Management gave approval to the
project on May 19th, and the final contract
was signed on 3rd August 2016, that the
pitch would be formally opened on 24th
September but it was!

The contractors, Tony Patterson, through

the great commitment and determination
of son Paul Patterson, worked diligently
through the Summer months. They lifted
and removed the old carpet; they removed
the old shock pad, cleaned, examined and
repaired the old tarmac base; they laid the

Newtown has just been named the Munster schoolboys hockey
school of the year! On the fringes of Munster it is difficult to keep
the hockey flag flying, but there is no doubt that currently the future
is looking good.

One visiting club were so delighted with the surface compared to

their own that they said they would prefer the return fixture to be
at Newtown again!

School teams have been performing well with some excellent

results (see reports in school section of magazine). There is a
very promising Senior boys team composed largely of 3rd and
4th formers, which means they will continue playing together and
should develop into a particularly strong team in the next 2 or 3
years. A record number of boys was selected to play for Munster
6 at under 16 level and 2 at under 18, with Ben Johnson also playing
8 matches for the Irish under 16 team in 2016 and to date 3 for the
Irish under 18 team with 6 more pending in July 2017.

Two girls were selected to play for South East and Karen Sweeney
(a.k.a. Old Scholar Karen Harris) and Shirley Moore (WHC) are
currently playing with the Irish Masters team.

The Hockey club has also had a number of good and successful Craig Fulton, Irish Hockey coach cutting the tape to formally open

fruits of their Sunday morning coaching and training sessions and

coaches. Also, to finish the job properly there is a need for dug-outs. The

OBITUARY Bertie (Albert William) Finnegan

16TH NOVEMBER 1925-14TH JANUARY 2017
My earliest memory of Bertie is hearing that he had been canned at
the national school near where we lived in Sandymount in Dublin. He
must have been about 7 years old at this time and his sister Nancy
was aged 6 and myself, his sister Hazel was aged 5.

Bertie continued unsuccessful at various school until his mother

decided to send him to Newtown aged 10. Our mothers brother
Bertie Buttle had gone to Newtown from Enniscorthy in about 1911
and according to his sisters memory he had turned out to be a very
tidy and careful person, So she was hoping that Newtown would
work similar wonders for her son.

Alas, tidy and careful were not the results, but so much better were Bertie and his sisters Nancy and Hazel at a recent Old Scholars

He was an all-rounder in achievements, a team member in most

DORIAN VAN BRAAM Class of 2003

Dorian Van Braam, having spent spells abroad in Italy and Spain
as well as back in Ireland is now settled in the south of England in
the Surrey hills near Guildford. He is married to past pupil Gemma
Coffey and they are expecting their first child together.

Alongside his art and design work he has become heavily involved in
sculptural installations for film and TV as well as venues and events;
specializing in more naturally themed content matter. He has
worked on numerous large feature films, such as Paddington Bear
and The conjuring, and is responsible for the re design, build and
installation of major elements at various high profile venues in the
capital.

I have a lot of different things going on continually, and relish the

challenge that such an array of activities always throws up. From the
more functional homeware and custom furniture commissions to
the various Film and TV works, and the painting commissions to
the wild and wonderful themed and sculptural installations that I
have had the chance to do. On one day I may be doing woodwork,
the next metalwork, and then the day after mix the two with
composites! It s an incredible privilege to wake up in the morning
and relish what the day holds in store, not without its difficulties and
stresses of course, but a pleasure to be appreciated and respected.
My fascination with the fine arts was born in the old masters and
as such always wanted to lean in the direction of being an artistic
channel through which people could realise their ideas and dreams;
which needs a broader more complete skillset, lending itself to
getting the job done with maximum efficiency and minimal loss of
the initial spark. This loss of spark is something that is gradually
happening in so many arcs of life thanks to standardisation
and specialisation, but a few of us have to fly the flag, and I feel
privileged to have survived the journey to the point where there is no
other way for me. A lot of friends and acquaintances have fallen by
the wayside over the years as lifes war of attrition took hold, and in
some way I owe it to them.
He generally works the summer months in and around London and
the studios, and the winter months based more from home working
on private projects and commissions. He is an avid mountain biker
and sport climber, and this downtime also gives him a chance to
allow more time to these escapes.

TREASURERS REPORT 2016/17

NMFOSA Fund: The Old Scholars Association distributed funds, as follows: 300.00 was given towards the annual short story, poetry and
photo competition. 100.00 each was contributed to Robert Pim and Kate Sherry to help towards the costs of representing the school at
the Caretakers of the Environment international conference in Denmark. 500.00 was contributed towards the Young Scientists trip to
Dublin. 5000.00 was donated towards the funding of the new hockey pitch.

Eric de Courcy Fund: 790.00 Music Bursary was awarded to Daniel Evans. Our congratulations for great work. As of 31st December 2016
the Fund was worth 46,604.86.

Investments: The value of the portfolio took a bit of a hit this year, owing to uncertainties over BREXIT and various European elections.
Goodbody Valuation, as of 31st. December 2016 was 74,642.78 Despite the drop-in valuation, dividends held up nicely.

AOB: At last years AGM, a motion was passed to transfer the Eric de Courcy Fund and the NMFOSA stock Portfolio into a Managed Fund
with Goodbody Stockbrokers. The Eric de Courcy Fund has been with PTSB for several years, but the interest earned has been dropping to
close to zero for the past few years. We have been advised by Goodbody that this is the best way to use our funds, especially as world events
are uncertain. They say that, with their expertise, we can look forward to higher annual returns. This is being finalized as we go to print.
Copies of the audited accounts will be available upon request at the AGM in September.

On behalf of the Committee: Peter Pearce Hon. Treasurer
