Hearing set for street-naming
bill for gay Democrat
The D.C. City Council has scheduled a hearing on Sept. 20 for a bill calling for
the ceremonial naming of a street on Capitol Hill for the late Richard Rausch, a
prominent gay Democratic Party activist and advocate for LGBT rights.
Rausch was an Iowa native who rst came to D.C. in 1960 after working on
President John F. Kennedys election campaign. He died in 2007 after a bout with
double pneumonia. He was 77.
He was an early and open advocate for LGBTQ rights, womens rights, workers
rights, civil rights, and human rights during his tenure as a sta member for
Democratic members of Congress and in leadership positions in the party,
according to a resolution approved Monday by the Gertrude Stein Democratic
Club endorsing the Rausch street-naming bill.
The bill, introduced by Council member Anita Bonds (D-At-Large), calls for
designating the 200 block of 2nd Street, S.E., where Rausch lived for many years,
as Richard Rausch Way.
Nine members of the 13-member Council, including Council Chair Phil Mendelson
(D-At-Large), have signed on as co-sponsors of the bill. The Sept. 20 hearing will be
held by the Councils Committee of the Whole, which Mendelson chairs.
We dont want to forget our community heroes, and Richard is denitely one
we count as among those who not only have been activists in the community but
have helped others, Bonds said in discussing her reason for introducing the bill.
So I think its perfectly appropriate.

Memorial service set for gay journalist Terry Michael
A memorial service is scheduled to be held Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Hill Center on
Capitol Hill for gay journalist and political commentator Terry Michael, who died on Aug.
7 at the age of 70.
It will be informal and will include some musical oerings and an opportunity for
people to speak if they wish to do so, according to a statement released by friends and
family members who are organizing the memorial.
The Hill Center is located at 921 Pennsylvania Ave., S.E. The memorial service is
scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
In a career in Washington spanning more than 40 years, Michael worked as a
journalist, press secretary, educator and political commentator. Among his numerous
endeavors was his role as executive director of the Washington Center for Politics and
Journalism, which he founded in 1989 and through which he taught journalism students
how best to report on politics and public aairs.

Gay Democrat announces bid for local party post
Longtime gay Democratic activist Phil Pannell has announced he is a candidate for
the position of D.C. Democratic Committeeman, which became open last month when
former D.C. Council member Arrington Dixon, who held the position, resigned before
the end of his term in 2018.
Pannell currently serves in the position of Alternate Democratic Committeeman. He points
out in an open letter to members of the citys Democratic State Committee, the governing
body of the D.C. Democratic Party, that traditionally the Alternate Committeeman and
Alternate Committeewoman have been named as the Committeeman or Committeewoman
when their predecessor leaves the position before the end of their term.
But this year D.C. Council member Anita Bonds (D-At-Large), who serves as chair of
the D.C. Democratic Party, moved to change the local partys rules to end the tradition
of the alternate committee person automatically becoming the full committeeman or
committeewoman. Under Bonds proposal, which is expected to be approved by the State
Committee next month, the full State Committee will vote to elect a new Committeeman
or Committeewoman when an incumbent leaves oce before their term expires.
Bonds told the Blade on Tuesday she introduced her proposal because the old system
of replacing the committee person with the alternate committee person is in violation
of rules set by the Democratic National Committee, on which the committee persons
serve. She said her proposal is in no way aimed at preventing Pannell from replacing
Dixon as the committee person, noting that she is a longtime supporter of the LGBT
community and would welcome the selection of an LGBT person for the post through
the new selection process.
But in his open letter to State Committee members, Pannell said the real reason
Bonds was seeking the rules change was that some of our members do not want to see
me as the national committeeman and some other men want that position.
Acknowledging that the rules change will be approved, Pannell said he will run in an
election by State Committee members.
It couldnt immediately be determined who will run against Pannell for the post.

Food & Friends joins Food Is Medicine symposium
The local organization Food & Friends, which for years has delivered meals to people
with HIV and AIDS and other serious illnesses in the D.C. metropolitan area, is among
more than a dozen similar groups from across the country that are participating in a
national symposium in the nations capital organized by the Food Is Medicine Coalition.
Organizers of the symposium, scheduled to be held Sept. 11-13, said its intended to
advocate for access to medically tailored meals, [as] a low-cost, high-impact solution
for sick and low-income Americans, according to a statement released by Food Is
Medicine Coalition.
Participants will discuss best practices in medically tailored nutrition, research in the
eld and innovations projects from across the country, the statement says.
It says participants were scheduled to visit members of Congress on Capitol Hill on
Wednesday, Sept. 13, to advocate for increased Medicaid and Medicare provisions for
medically tailored nutrition.
Craig Shniderman, executive director of Food & Friends, said representatives of the
organization were participating in the symposium and would be joining colleagues
from similar groups in other parts of the country on visits to Capitol Hill to advocate for
organizations food delivery programs. He said Food & Friends representatives would
be meeting with D.C. Congressional Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton.

Trekr Adventures to host hurricane relief benet at JR.s
Trekr Adventures, a gay-owned local travel company, will host a fundraiser to benet
the Virgin United Fund and The Moorings Fund; the former is a fund established by Sir
Richard Branson to assist with hurricane relief and the latter was established by sailing
charter company The Moorings to assist its employees and families.
The benet will be held Thursday, Sept. 21, at JR.s; $1 will be donated for every Miller
Lite sold; Jell-O shots will be sold with all proceeds going to the two funds and a cash
bucket will be passed for contributions.
The event is a response to Hurricane Irma, which decimated the British Virgin Islands.
It is a popular destination for sailing and Trekr Adventures and our customers have
a strong anity for Tortola and the surrounding islands, said Trekrs Josh Seefried.

Vince Gray says he might run for mayor
Tells Stein Club he
hasnt ruled out a
challenge to Bowser

Former D.C. mayor and current City
Council member Vincent Gray (D-Ward
7) drew applause from members of the
Gertrude Stein Democratic Club on Sept.
11, when he said he has not ruled out a
run for mayor next year.
Gray, who attended the Stein Clubs
regularly scheduled meeting at the D.C.
Center for the LGBT Community, hinted
at a possible mayoral race in response
to a question by club member Matt
Abbruzzese, who asked him, Are you
going to run for mayor?
Do you want me to make an
announcement? Gray replied, drawing
laughter and applause from some club
members.
I havent ruled it out, he said. Lets the U.S. Attorneys oce later dropped

Cliff Witt, early D.C. gay rights strategist, dies at 77

Clifton R. Cli Witt, who was one of six
founders of D.C.s Gay Activists Alliance
in 1971 and worked for more than 20
years as a director of lm and video for
a company that makes industrial training
movies before becoming a manager at
the D.C. gay bar Ziegfelds-Secrets, died
Sept. 2 at George Washington University
Hospital. He was 77.
Friends and co-workers at Ziegfelds-
Secrets said he lost consciousness at
the club just after its 3 a.m. closing on
Saturday and was taken by ambulance
to the hospital where he died later
that morning. His friend and former
roommate Glenn Berkheimer said Witt
had been suering from a lung ailment
but the hospital didnt immediately
disclose a cause of death.
Witts brother, Clyde Witt, said Cli Witt
began his career as a Peace Corps volunteer
in the early 1960s in Latin America, where
he served for at least two years in Colombia
one week before early voting began for
the citys 2014 Democratic primary for
mayor. In his news conference Machen
implied that he had evidence that Gray
may have engaged in illegal fundraising
in his 2010 mayoral election campaign.
No such evidence was presented and
were conducted during that time, every
its investigation into alleged campaign
nance violations in Grays 2010 campaign
on grounds that insucient evidence
existed that such violations occurred.
Gray reiterated to Stein Club members
and became uent in Spanish.
He entered the Peace Corps shortly
after receiving a bachelors and masters
degree in lm production and direction
at Northwestern University in Illinois,
according to Clyde Witt. Clyde Witt said
his brother was born in Cleveland and
raised in nearby Maple Heights, Ohio.
He graduated from Maple Heights High
School in 1958.
Clyde Witt and others who knew
Cli Witt said he devoted most of his
working career as a lmmaker for the
communications division of the Bureau
of National Aairs, or BNA, a D.C.-based
news organization that specializes in
business-related news and produces
educational and training movies.
A BNA ocial said Witt worked for the
company as Director of Film & Video from
January 1973 until December 1995.
Roberta Hantgun and Mark Daniels were
hired by Witt in the late 1970s as freelance
camera operators and worked on many of
the lm projects directed by Witt.
We did safety training lms, Daniels
told the Washington Blade. Some
showed industrial accidents. We did a
sexual harassment training series about
sexual harassment in the workplace, he
said. They were very creative.

was in my opinion an insurmountable lead,
said Gray. What he did was he was trying

Cli was a good man and great to work
with, Daniels said. He always pushed
himself and his crew to do better in a very
compassionate way.
Longtime D.C. gay activist Paul Kuntzler
said Witt played an active role in the
groundbreaking 1971 election campaign
of gay rights pioneer Frank Kameny, who
became a candidate for the newly created
D.C. Congressional Delegate seat in
Congress. It was the rst time an openly
gay person had run for a federal oce.
Kuntzler, who served as manager of
the Kameny campaign, said Witt served
as assistant manager. Among other
things, Witt used what Kuntzler said was
his remarkable organizational skills to
arrange for several busloads of volunteer
campaign workers to travel from New
York City to D.C. to help gather several
thousand signatures needed to get
Kamenys name on the ballot.
Kameny nished in fourth place in a
six-candidate race, receiving just under
1,900 votes, a few hundred more than a
candidate who expressed anti-gay views
during the campaign. Although Kuntzler,

to suppress the vote and he was successful
in doing that, Gray said in referring to
Machens news conference.
Grays comment at the Stein Club meeting
that he isnt ruling out a run for mayor came a
little over a week after D.C. Attorney General
Karl Racine announced he will not run for
mayor next year, a development believed to
have boosted Bowsers prospects for wining
a second term as mayor.
A mayoral run by Gray next year could
present a dilemma for the Stein Club.
Gray received the clubs endorsement
when he rst ran for mayor in 2010. He
nished ahead of his rivals, including
Bowser, in the clubs 2014 endorsement
vote but fell four votes short of obtaining
the 60 percent threshold needed to win
the clubs endorsement in the primary.
But similar to Gray, Bowser has
emerged as a strong supporter of LGBT
rights and LGBT-related issues since
becoming mayor. She has outpaced Gray
in appointments of a large number of
LGBT people to high-level positions in
her administration, building signicant
A race between Gray and Bowser for
mayor next year would force Stein Club
members and many LGBT voters to choose
between two candidates considered strong
friends of the LGBT community.
Witt and the others working on Kamenys
campaign didnt expect Kameny to win,
they considered the eort a success in
achieving their goal of drawing attention
to the gay issues that Kameny raised
during the campaign.
Shortly after the campaign ended Witt
joined Kuntzler and four others involved
in the campaign in launching the D.C. Gay
Activists Alliance, which they modeled after
a group by the same name in New York City.
Witts brother Clyde said he believes
Witt retired from his lmmaking career
at the BNA, which later became known as
Bloomberg BNA, in the late 1990s. And
then after that he just sort of did whatever
he wanted to do, Clyde Witt said.
According to friends and co-workers
at Ziegfelds-Secrets, it was around that
time that Witt redirected his energy in
retirement into a new career as a manager
at Secrets, where, among other things, he
supervised and arranged the scheduling of
the clubs nude male dance performers. He
also served as the graphic designer for the
clubs promotional advertising.
Clyde Witt said plans for a memorial service
would be announced at a later date. Ziegfelds-
Secrets co-owner Steven Delurba said the club
plans to organize its own memorial gathering
for Witt in the near future.

Fauci: More resources needed to end epidemic

The director of the National Institute
of Allergy and Infections Diseases at the
National Institutes of Health on Saturday
said more resources need to be devoted
to ending the global HIV/AIDS epidemic.
Dr. Anthony Fauci in a presentation
he gave at the U.S. Conference on AIDS
at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in D.C.
noted individual countries have met
UNAIDS targets of having 90 percent of
people with HIV knowing their status,
receiving antiretroviral therapy and
having undetectable viral loads by 2020.
He pointed out globally as a whole we
are still far from the mark at 44 percent.
We need to do much better, said Fauci.
You do much better with resources.
Fauci said 19.5 million of the more than
36 million people around the world who
are living with HIV are on antiretroviral
drugs. He noted there is a treatment
gap of 17.2 million people.
We are really far o the mark. so
we need to so something at a global
epidemiological level that involves not only
people in this room, but governments, our
own, international organizations that need
to pull together for that, said Fauci.

Charlottesville, Va.s LGBT Pride Festival,
to be held Saturday, hit a bump in the road
earlier this month after a Pennsylvania
hat printing company declined to print
merchandise with the groups political or
controversial message.
We dont have a lot of places to get
rainbow stu, its not like living in D.C.,
believe it or not, said Lisa Green, director
of Cville Pride, in a phone interview with
the Blade.
Green and a small cadre of
Charlottesville locals started the rst
Cville Pride six years ago. She said the
event runs on a shoestring budget, but
it thrives because of the community and
the support they get from vendors.
So Green was shocked when they
attempted to get hats printed with their
logo, a borrowed version of Equality
Dr. ANTHONY FAUCI, director of the

opening plenary on Thursday noted
President Trumps proposed budget for
the 2018 scal year would cut $850 million
from the Presidents Emergency Plan for
AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and $225 million from
the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis
and Malaria. She also criticized the White
House for proposing cuts to the Ryan
White Comprehensive AIDS Resource
Emergency Act that provides assistance
to low-income people with HIV and their
North Carolinas Yall means All icon,
and the distributor for a longtime local
vendor said they wouldnt do the work.
The local company, Red Star
Merchandise, had worked with and
supported Cville Pride for years, but the
company that prints its hats, Hanover,
Pa.s Legacy Athletics, sent an email
saying it would not do the work because
it aims to keep a positive connotation
to the brand and part of that process
is avoiding doing any products with
custom logos that might be deemed as
controversial, political, oensive, etc.
A look at Legacy Athletics website
shows the company specializes in college
and casual custom clothing and hats. No
images available on social media show
products with an overtly political message.
The Legacy email, published on Cville
Prides website, goes on to say that the
company does not either support or do
not support the organization making the
request but in light of recent events
in Charlottesville as well as the fact Gay
Pride events are political activism, we
respectfully decline this order.

Fauci in his remarks did not specically
refer to the proposed cuts. He did say,
however, there is a need for an HIV
vaccine to achieve what I call durable
end of the HIV pandemic.
Were not talking about the individual
person whos living with HIV or what we
can do for at the at-risk purpose, even in
the absence of a vaccine, he said. But
globally and epidemiology if we want to
end the epidemic, if its durable were
going to need a vaccine.
Roughly 3,000 people attended the
conference that NMAC formerly known
as the National Minority AIDS Council
organized.
NMAC Executive Director Paul Kawata
on Saturday discussed Trumps proposed
budget, noting it has been a very dicult
time in Washington.
We are a movement for social
justice, he said. We are a movement
for social justice that is dependent upon
government funding.
Kawata in his remarks referenced
last months white supremacist rally in
Charlottesville, Va., last month that left a
32-year-old woman dead and more than
a dozen others injured. He also noted
the Trump administrations decision to
rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood
Charlottesville made headlines
in August when a Unite the Right
rally brought Neo-Nazis and white
supremacists to the otherwise quiet
town. They had ostensibly planned to
protest the removal of a Gen. Robert E.
Lee statue in a centrally located park and
were met by counter protesters. They
were eventually dispersed after Virginia
Gov. Terry McAulie called a state of
emergency. One woman, Heather Heyer,
was killed when an attendee of the Unite
the Right event barreled into a crowd of
protesters with his car.
That connection between Cville Pride and
the deadly attack that still hangs over the city
is something that really bothered Green.

Our people are hurting too, he added.

Kawata acknowledged the man from
the stage after he stopped speaking.
Thank you for standing up and
speaking your truth, said Kawata. Thank
you for speaking up and for holding me
accountable.

Attempts to reach Legacy Athletics for
comment have not yet been returned.
Redstar Merchandise said it would not

Gillibrand seeks to thwart Trump trans military ban
Administration opposes
amendment to defense bill

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) led
an amendment Monday before the U.S.
Senate that would undermine President
Trumps ban on transgender military
service and could see a vote soon.
The two-page amendment, co-
sponsored by Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine),
was led for consideration as part of the
scal year 2018 defense authorization bill.
The amendment was obtained this week
by the Washington Blade.
Gillibrand said in a statement the
amendment would honor transgender
service members currently serving in the
armed forces.
Any individual who wants to join our
military and meets the standards should
be allowed to serve, period. Gender
identity should have nothing to do with it,
Gillibrand said. I am proud to work with
Sen. Collins to introduce our bipartisan
amendment to protect transgender
members of our Armed Forces, and I will
always ght for our brave transgender
troops who put their lives on the line to
protect our country.
Both Gillibrand and Collins championed
eorts in 2010 for legislative repeal of
Dont Ask, Dont Tell. They both were on the impact of new enlistments of
among the 45 senators who signed a
letter to Defense Secretary James Mattis
urging him to resist Trumps plan to bar
transgender people from the U.S. military.
Collins, the lead Republican in eorts
to repeal Dont Ask, Dont Tell, also
expressed support for transgender
troops in a statement.
Our armed forces should welcome
the service of any qualied individual
who is willing and capable of serving
our country, Collins said. If individuals
are willing to put on the uniform of our
country, be deployed in war zones, and
risk their lives for our freedoms, then we
should be expressing our gratitude to
them, not trying to exclude them from
military service.
The amendment, which responds
to President Trumps memo late last
month directing the Pentagon to ban
transgender people from the armed
forces, consists of three parts.
The rst part expresses the sense of
Congress, which isnt binding under the
law, that individuals who are qualied
and can meet the standards to serve in
the military should be eligible toserve.
The second part addresses what will
happen to transgender people currently
in the military who came out after the
Obama administration lifted the ban on
transgender service and are now facing

the U.S. military to the reinstate the policy.
Under the amendment, a service
member may not be involuntarily
separated from the Armed Forces, or
denied reenlistment or continuation in
servicein the Armed Forces, solely on the
basis of the membersgender identity.
The third part of the amendment
codies the study announced June 30
by Defense Secretary James Mattis
transgender people in the armed forces.
The amendment sets a deadline for
completing that study on Dec. 31 and
directs the Pentagon to send Congress a
report on that study no later than Feb. 21.
However, the amendment stops short
of directing the Pentagon to accept
transgender people into the armed forces,
putting o the decision on whether that will
happen until the completion of the study.
Aaron Belkin, director of the San
Francisco-based Palm Center, endorsed
the Gillibrand measure in a statement as
means to enhance military readiness.
Legislative action now would
prevent uncertainty and disruption
following from a ban and save money
that would be wasted recruiting and
training replacements, Belkin said.
Many Republican leaders have made
statements in support of transgender
troops defending our nation, including
Sens. McCain, Collins, Murkowski, Hatch,
Portman, Ernst, Tillis, Heller, Johnson,
Toomey, Gardner, Shelby and Sullivan,
and 56 retired generals and admirals have
said that reinstating the transgender ban
would degrade readiness.
Nowhere mentioned in the amendment
is U.S. military funding for gender
reassignment surgery. It seems that
even if the amendment became law, the
portion of Trumps ban that would end

government funding for that procedure
would be allowed to stand.
The absence of that language is likely
an attempt to win support from Senate
Republicans who objected to Trumps
policy, but withheld support for military
funds for transition-related health care.
It remains to be seen whether Senate
leadership will reach an agreement to
allow a vote on the Gillibrand amendment.
The Senate was set to vote on proceeding
with debate on the defense authorization
bill late this week.
Lawmakers were considering last
week language for an amendment
against Trumps transgender military
ban. Whether or not the amendment
will obtain a vote is likely up to Sen.
John McCain (R-Ariz.), who as chair of
the Senate Armed Services Committee
has considerable sway over the defense
authorization bill.
The Trump administration has come out
against the amendment. A White House
National Security Council spokesperson
told the Washington Blade the
administration opposes the amendment.
The administration opposes the
Sen. Gillibrand amendment, the NSC
spokesperson said. The president signed
an EO tasking DOD with implementation.
The White House referred the Blade
to the Pentagon for more details, which
reiterated in response to the amendment

As directed, DoD will develop an
implementation plan, which will contain
the steps that will promote military
readiness, lethality, and unit cohesion,
with due regard for budgetary constraints
and consistent with applicable law,

Haverstick said.

On Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader
Chuck Schumer told reporters at his
weekly press gaggle Senate leadership
is still working on an agreement under
which amendments will come up.
McCain told the Hungton Post on
Tuesday no decision was made on the
Gillibrand amendment.
Were working on it, McCain is quoted
as saying. Weve been talking for days.
The Trump administrations position is
consistent with an email from the anti-
LGBT Family Research Council urging
supporters to contact their senators to
oppose the amendment.
David Christensen, the Family Research
Councils vice president for government
aairs, cites issues with privacy and cost
of the transition-related care, making
dubious estimates gender reassignment
surgery would cost the U.S. military
around $3.7 billion over a 10-year period.
Those suering from gender
dysphoria have a psychological and
medical condition,Christensen writes.
Allowing people who identify as
transgender to serve in the military,
much-less be recruited for the military,
will have a negative impact on readiness,
recruitment and retention.
Concurrent with a legislative process
is litigation seeking to overturn Trumps
transgender military ban. In one of the
lawsuits led by the National Center for
Lesbian Rights and GLBTQ Advocates
& Defenders, the legal team has sought
a preliminary injunction, which could
come down at any time and eectively lift
Trumps policy.
The impact of a preliminary injunction,
one LGBT advocate said, could go either
way on legislation, either taking the wind
of out of the sails for that course or giving
more space to lawmakers to vote against
the policy after the judiciary repudiated it.
Generally, I think it might be less
helpful, but its hard to say, and we could
see a preliminary injunction at any time,
but theres no guarantee we see one at
all, the advocate said.
Even if the Senate approved an
amendment against Trumps transgender
military ban as part of the defense
authorization bill, many obstacles could
prevent it from becoming law.
For starters, the provision could be
stripped out in conference committee
when House and Senate lawmakers agree
to a nal version of the defense bill. The
House already approved its version of the
legislation, which contains no provision
on transgender service.
If the amendment survives the entire
process in Congress, Trump would
then be in a position of having to sign
a defense bill into law that includes a
measure overriding his directive to ban
transgender military service, which the
president would likely not be keen to do.

Irma causes signicant damage in Key West

fund designed to help Irmas LGBT victims
in the Caribbean. The groups are raising
funds for the Jamaica-based Caribbean
Vulnerable Communities Coalition, which
provides services directly to and on
behalf of Caribbean populations who are
especially vulnerable to HIV infection or
often forgotten in access to treatment
and healthcare programs.
In the Caribbean, it can be extremely
dicult to reach members of the LGBTI
community, but in the wake of Irmas
destruction, reach them we must, said Alturi

Hurricane Irma caused signicant
damage in Key West when it made landfall
in the Florida Keys on Sunday.
Videos that storm chasers and local
residents posted onto social media show
Irmas storm surge inundated portions of
Key West with several feet of water.
Irma damaged the iconic monument
that marks the southernmost point in the
continental U.S., but Ernest Hemingways
home and the more than 50 cats that live there
appeared to have weathered the hurricane
well. Irma, however, did cause widespread
tree damage throughout Key West.
Bourbon St. Pub, a gay bar on Duval
Street, on Monday in a Facebook post said
the garden bar of New Orleans House, an
all-male guesthouse, is unrecognizable.
Not one tree is standing, said the post,
which notes the owner of the Bourbon St.
Pub and New Orleans House provided
the information after he called from his
homes landline. He traveled around the
island and said almost every street in Key
West is blocked by fallen trees.
The post also noted trees on top of
cars and homes and all the trees in Key
Wests Bayview Park are down.
All trees have been stripped of their
leaves, it reads. He (the owner) said
it was like a huge weed whacker hit the
island. All signs, canopies, etc., have been
ripped down.
Island House, another gay resort in Key
West, on Monday wrote on its Facebook
page that several large trees fell during Irma,
but the damage to the property is xable.
The post also notes there is no water,
electricity or cell phone service on Key West.
The last few days have been incredibly
stressful, watching Hurricane Irma head
for Key West, it reads. The hurricane has
now gone past us, and we are starting

to be able to assess damage and think
about the future.
The Washington Blade has received
reports that other gay and lesbian
guesthouses and bars on the island did
not sustain serious damage.
Irma made landfall on Cudjoe Key,
which is roughly 20 miles east of Key
West, early Sunday morning with winds
of 130 mph. The Category 4 hurricane
washed out portions of U.S. 1, which is the
only road to the mainland in Miami-Dade
County, and caused widespread damage
to homes, boats and infrastructure
throughout the Florida Keys.
Residents and business owners who
evacuated before Irma are unable
to access the Florida Keys south of
Islamorada. Airports in Key West and
Marathon, a city that is located in the
middle of the Florida Keys, remain closed
to commercial ights.
We certainly will clean everything
up on the island and get it ready to re-
open, former Monroe County Mosquito
Commissioner Steve Smith told the Blade
on Monday from Orlando.
Smith and his husband evacuated their
Key West home before Irma.
We certainly have to make sure that
infrastructure is up and running at 100
percent before we open our doors to
visitors, said Smith.
Irma was a Category 5 hurricane when
it made landfall last week in Barbuda, St.
Barts St. Martin, Anguilla, the U.S. and British
Virgin Islands and Cuba. The storm caused
widespread destruction on the islands and
left more than three dozen people dead.
Irma damaged an LGBT community
center in Santo Domingo, Cuba, when
it made landfall on the islands north
central coast over the weekend with 160
mph winds. The hurricane also damaged
portions of a makeshift memorial that was
outside the Pulse nightclub in Orlando as
it moved north through Florida.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray on Tuesday announced he would resign after a fth
man accused him of sexual molestation.
Murray in a statement said he will step down on Wednesday at 5 p.m. local
time. Seattle City Council President Bruce Harrell will become acting mayor.
While the allegations against me are not true, it is important that my personal
issues do not aect the ability of our city government to conduct the publics
business, said Murray in a statement.
Seattle voters elected Murray as their citys mayor in 2013. The openly gay
Democrat had previously been in the Washington Legislature.
Murray in May announced he would not seek re-election after a fourth man
came forward to allege he paid him for sex when he was a teenager in the 1980s.
Media reports indicate Murrays cousin on Tuesday accused him of molesting
him on Long Island, N.Y., in the 1970s.

Protesters denounce
anti-LGBT violence, Islamophobia
Roughly two-dozen people gathered in Dupont Circle on Sunday to protest
anti-LGBT violence and discrimination, racism and Islamophobia.
KhushDC, a group for LGBT South Asians who live in the D.C. metropolitan
area, and the National Queer Asian Pacic Islander Alliance organized the event,
which included local advocates who spoke.
Organizers at the base of the Dupont Circle fountain placed 75 rainbow ags
representing the number of hate crimes on the basis of sexual orientation, gender
identity, race, ethnicity and national origin that have been reported in D.C. since
July 31. They also had posters honoring Nabra Hassanen, a 17-year-old Muslim
teenager who was killed in June during what advocates believe is a hate crime, and
three other murder victims who were trans and/or people of color.
For some of us, these arent dierent communities, Shabab Ahmed Mirza of
KhushDC told the Washington Blade before she spoke in Dupont Circle. We are
part of the LGBT community. I am part of the queer and trans community. I am
part of the Muslim community. I am part of the South Asian community. For me
its not like these things are happening separate from each other.
Sundays event is one of seven that are taking place across the country around
the 16th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
We had this horric tragedy, said Mirza.
Whats also been really sad is the 16 years since then, the event has become
a symbol of hate against our communities, she added, referring to U.S. military
campaigns around the world.
Mirza told the Blade that airport screening procedures implemented in the
wake of Sept. 11 dont actually make anyone that much safer and were created
as a tool of Islamophobia. She added body scanners the Transportation Security
Administration now uses at airport security checkpoints are telling us what our
bodies should look like.
As a trans person when Im going through security theyre going to have
to sort of sit there and be like your body doesnt match what we think a man
should look like or a woman should look like and you have to t into one of those
two categories, said Mirza. Thats not a reality for many of us. If youre a trans

Edith Windsor, lesbian activist who took down DOMA, dies at 88
She will go down in the
history books as a true
American hero

Edith Windsor, a lesbian activist who
was a pioneer for LGBT rights and
brought down the anti-gay Defense of
Marriage Act, died Tuesday at age 88.
Judith Kasen-Windsor issued a
statement Tuesday conrming Windsors
death, but didnt disclose a cause. The
two were married in 2016.
I lost my beloved spouse Edie, and the
world lost a tiny but tough as nails ghter
for freedom, justice and equality, Kasen-
Windsor said. Edie was the light of my
life. She will always be the light for the
LGBTQ community which she loved so
much and which loved her right back.
The New York lesbian, who earned a
masters degree in mathematics from
New York University in 1957, was out as
member of the LGBT community at a
time when being gay was criminal under
state law in many parts of the country.
Her longtime partner, Thea Spyer, rst
proposed marriage in 1967, but the two
didnt wed until 2007. They held a ceremony
in Canada, one of the rst countries where
same-sex marriage was legal.
But Windsor is best known for being
the plainti in the lawsuit that led to
U.S. Supreme Courts landmark decision
in 2013 striking down the Defense of
Marriage Act, which prohibited federal
recognition of same-sex marriage. That
ruling was the precursor for the 2015
Obergefell decision extending marriage
equality nationwide.
Represented by New York lesbian
attorney Roberta Kaplan and the
American Civil Liberties Union, Windsor
sued the United States for enforcing
DOMA after the U.S. government forced
her to pay $363,000 in estate taxes when
Spyer died in 2009 of a heart condition
after the two were together 44 years.
On the day of oral arguments of
her case in 2013, Windsor famously
appeared before the media on the steps
of the Supreme Court with an iconic pink
scarf that blew in the wind. At the time,
Windsor said she was humbled by the
role the LGBT movement bestowed upon
her in pursuit of marriage equality.
I am today an out lesbian who just sued
the United States of America, which is kind
of overwhelming for me, Windsor said.
Kaplan, who took Windsors case to the
Supreme Court and successfully argued
the 1996 law was unconstitutional, said in a
statement being Windsors lawyer was and
will always be the greatest honor of my life.
She will go down in the history books
EDITH WINDSOR died Tuesday at age 88.
as a true American hero, Kaplan said.
With Edies passing, I lost not only a
treasured client, but a member of my
family. I know that Edies memory will
always be a blessing to Rachel, myself
and Jacob. I also know that her memory
will be a blessing not only to every LGBT
person on this planet, but to all who
believe in the concept of btzelem elohim,
or equal dignity for all.
Windsors story was inspirational far beyond
the LGBT community. Last year in an interview
with the Washington Blade, Democratic
presidential nominee Hillary Clinton identied
Windsor as an LGBT person she sees as a role
model. Windsor, an enthusiastic supporter of
Clinton in her bid for the White House, said
she was so honored the candidate chose her
as a role model.
Anthony Romero, executive director of
the American Civil Liberties Union, said in
a statement we lost one of this countrys
great civil rights pioneers.
The wheels of progress turn forward
because of people like Edie who are
willing to stand up in the face of injustice,
Romero said. One simply cannot write
the history of the gay rights movement
without reserving immense credit and
gratitude for Edie Windsor. We were
proud to stand with Edie when she took
her ght on behalf of same-sex couples
everywhere to the Supreme Court.
A public memorial will be held Friday,
Sept. 15 at 12:30 p.m. at Riverside
Memorial Chapel in New York City. In
lieu of owers, Windsor had requested
that any donations in her memory be
made to the NYC LGBT Center, Callen-
Lorde Community Health Center,
theHetrick-Martin Institute, and Services
& Advocacy forLGBTElders, or SAGE.
Aisha Moodie-Mills, CEO of the Gay &
Lesbian Victory Institute, said in a statement
Windsor was our erce heroine and will
be remembered as a seminal gure in our
inevitable march toward equality.
Edith felt deeply the injustice of being
denied the right to marry her partner of
more than 40 years, and she committed
herself to ghting back with determination
and a smile, Moodie-Mills said. I will
never forget Edith standing on the steps of
the Supreme Court, describing marriage
as more than just rights and benets but
also as magic a powerful recognition of
indescribable love. Edith opened the door
for all LGBTQ Americans to experience this
magic and we are forever indebted to
her because of it.
Former President Barack Obama
issued a statement, saying few made as
a big dierence to America as a result of
her pursuit for marriage equality.
Americas long journey towards
equality has been guided by countless
small acts of persistence, and fueled by
the stubborn willingness of quiet heroes
to speak out for whats right, Obama
said. Few were as small in stature as
Edie Windsor and few made as big a
dierence to America.
Obama was president in 2013 at the

countless small acts of persistence, and

Few were as small in stature as Edie
Windsor and few made as big a dierence
to America.
I had the privilege to speak with Edie
a few days ago, and to tell her one more
time what a dierence she made to this
country we love. She was engaged to
her partner, Thea, for forty years. After
a wedding in Canada, they were married
for less than two. But federal law didnt
recognize a marriage like theirs as valid
which meant that they were denied
certain federal rights and benets that
other married couples enjoyed. And when
Thea passed away, Edie spoke up not for
special treatment, but for equal treatment
so that other legally married same-sex
couples could enjoy the same federal
rights and benets as anyone else.

Aussie officials warn of marriage debate dangers
NEW SOUTH WALES, Australia Australias lead mental health agency says
the debate about same-sex marriage rights here have a damaging eect on
LGBT residents, the Australian reports.
The National Mental Health Commission on Monday issued a statement to
warn that the debate had heightened discrimination against LGBT people.
(LGBT) people have experienced damaging behavior in their workplaces,
communities and in social and traditional media, commission co-chair,
Professor Allan Fels, said, according to the Australian. The commission is
alarmed about potential negative health impacts these debates are having on
individuals, couples and families who face scrutiny and judgment.
The commission, like more than 40 other health organizations, has a position
statement that marriage equality is a health issue due to, for example, the higher
rates of mental illness and suicide among LGBT people. Although the debate is having
a distressing impact, Brogden said pre-existing vulnerability was of most concern.
The Australia marriage vote started this week. Residents have until Nov. 7 to
vote by mail.
Study looks at prostate cancer effect on gays
MINNEAPOLIS Five years after his husband was diagnosed with prostate
cancer, a University of Minnesota professor is working to improve rehabilitation
treatment for LGBT survivors of the disease, the Minnesota Daily reports.
On Tuesday, Simon Rosser, an epidemiology professor at the University of
Minnesota, received a $3 million National Cancer Institute grant to study the
rehabilitation of LGBT prostate cancer survivors. The study is the rst NIH-
funded study of its kind.
The study will survey 450 people the largest pool in the eld to date, the
Minnesota Daily reports.
Gay and bisexual men with prostate cancer is a hidden population, Rosser
told the Daily. If you go to a doctor tomorrow and youre a gay man with prostate
cancer, the doctor cannot advise you about what works because the scientists
havent conducted the studies.
After the treatment, which often includes the removal of the prostate, many
prostate cancer survivors experience sexual repercussions, Rosser said. One of
his recent studies shows that consequences, like change in orgasm or erectile
diculties, disproportionately aect men who have sex with men.
Because of these repercussions, sexual functioning after surgery is the leading
predictor of quality of life, the Minnesota Daily reports.
Last year, Rosser applied for the NIH grant to nd those answers.
His study will test various rehabilitation techniques to nd which ones doctors
should recommend to patients. The study will be conducted online to reach a
national pool of cancer survivors.
Rosser said he hopes to determine what rehabilitation methods can help
those who underwent the surgery years ago, as well as recent patients, the
Minnesota Daily reports.
Older lesbians report chronic health problems
NEW YORK Older lesbian and bisexual women are more likely to suer
from chronic health problems than their straight counterparts, according to a
new study in American Journal of Public Health, reported on by NewNowNext.
Researchers at the University of Washington examined CDC data for 33,000
adults over the age of 50, and found that strokes, heart attacks, asthma, arthritis
and other problems were signicantly more prevalent among gay/bi women
that heterosexuals. (Transgender women were not included in the study.)
The study also uncovered that 53 percent of older gay/bi women experienced
lower back pain, versus just under 40 percent of heterosexual women, and were
more likely to drink excessively ad have trouble sleeping, NewNowNext reports.
This is the rst study to use national population-based data to evaluate
dierences in health outcomes and behaviors for older LGBT adults. Researchers
took data from the National Health Interview Survey in 2013, the rst year the
survey asked respondents about their sexual orientation, NewNowNext reports.
While the study didnt postulate the causes of the health discrepancies, other
research has pointed to discrimination and ostracization as fueling poor health
and health choices. Queer women are also less likely to be partnered, meaning
illnesses and warning signs are more likely to go unnoticed, NewNowNext reports.

you that lifting can be even more benecial in changing your body and how it
looks. Follow this lifting techniques and watch your body start to shred.
Complex lifts, mean complex calorie burn: When it comes down to triggering
a big fat burning eect, the more complex the exercise the better. When your
body doesnt have to work as hard to gure out the exercise, it wont burn as
many calories. This means dont be afraid of the more complicated exercises
once you have gotten the form down. Think of exercises that cross lots of joints
and things that make you o balance.
Exercises that cross lots of joints are called complex exercises. Think squats,
lunges, push ups and pull ups. Now try to further confuse the body try adding
in one more element to those exercises. Instead of just performing a squat, try
holding a set of dumbbells and making your squat into a squat with a curl and
a press. You now have made the normal exercise into something harder for
your body to command and in turn something that burns more calories, raises
your metabolism and burns more fat. Instead of your normal push up, add in
a push up with a leg lift at the top to make the exercise harder on your body.
Use your creativity to complicated the exercises that you normally do and watch
your body start to change that much quicker.
Get o balance: Like working with more complex exercises, working with
exercises that challenge your balance can also make it more dicult for your
body and raise calorie and fat burn. When people think of balance everyone
thinks of standing on one leg or dancing like a ballerina, but there are many
tools out there that can help to change your more common exercises into
balance exercises.
Exercise equipment like BOSU balls, stability balls, TRX bands and medicine
balls can change the normal stability of common exercises. Try doing a push up
on an unstable surface like a ball and keeping the ball as still as possible while
going through the press. Your muscles have to work double time because they
are working just to stay stable and then work to get you through the actual range
of motion.
If youre used to using machines for your workouts, this switch up can be very
challenging so start with no weight or light weights and slowly progress to the
normal intensity. Remember the goal is to stay stable the entire time so going
slow and keeping your balance is more important than banging out a bunch of
reps and heavy weight with bad form.
Be explosive: The most complicated exercises that give you the most bang for
your buck are explosive exercises. Think plyometrics and fast olympic lifts like
power cleans, hang cleans and snatches. The pro to these exercises are that they
really work at blasting fat fast, but the con is they have a high chance of injury
with the movements. These exercises should be done rst with supervision to
make sure youre doing them correctly. Also make sure to start with light weights
and the second you feel a little tired, take a break. When youre tired you tend
to make mistakes with your form, so its important to only work when you feel
in the optimal form.
Overall the body loves to adapt quickly so its important to consistently
challenge the body with dierent exercises and exercise patterns. As soon as
you get good at once type of exercise, go to another to keep the body guessing
and burning as much fat as possible. Do that and this fall will be just as lean if
not leaner than you summer.

sexual assault policy
Trump administration
continues its attacks on
minority groups

Last week, Education Secretary Betsy
DeVos announced she would change
the sexual-assault policy guidelines de-
ned under Title IX and reinforced by the
Obama administration. According to Vox,
the regulations say, Even if the police are
investigating allegations of rape or sexual
assault, colleges must also conduct their
own investigations to ensure the victims
right to an education is not being vio-
lated. Thats in part because colleges can
do things the police cant like shifting
dorm assignments or class schedules so
a student doesnt have to come in contact
with the person she accused of rape.
In 2011, the Obama administration sent
a letter, known as a Dear Colleague let-
ter, to colleges and universities, reminding
them of this obligation. Technically, those
letters arent a formal rule change. But be-
cause the ultimate penalty for Title IX viola-
tions can be a loss of federal funding a
death knell for colleges that depend on fed-
eral student loans and grants the guid-
ance had teeth. (No college has ever been
denied federal funding for a Title IX viola-
tion; usually, the Education Department
reaches an agreement with the college that
it will change its policies.)
After DeVos made her announce-
ment at the Antonin Scalia School of
Law named after the ultra-conservative
former justice, there was an immediate
outcry from feminists across the nation
as reported in a Ms. Magazine column

Association of University Women also
criticized the speech saying, It is yet an-
other action by this administration that
is at direct odds with upholding the civil
rights of all Americans.
Some might have believed that was the
universal opinion of women on the left
until reading Ruth Marcuss column in the
Washington Post Sexual-assault policy
on campus made better. Maybe. After
reading that, you realized there were
some who thought the current policy di-
rections need to be reviewed. The scary
thing for women, and for correct-thinking

men, is the policy is being reviewed by
DeVos and others in the Trump adminis-
tration who have never cared about pro-
tecting women or ensuring their equality.
In some cases just the opposite.
Again according to Vox in 2014, a group
of 28 Harvard Law School professors took
an unprecedented step of writing a letter
pushing back on the Obama guidance,
saying it had caused Harvards administra-
tion to overcorrect to the extreme.
Professor Elizabeth Bartholet, faculty
director of Harvard Law Schools Child Ad-
vocacy Program and one of the professors
who signed the letter said, I think they
created an environment where schools
felt in order to keep their federal funding,
they had to change their policies to ones
stacked against anybody accused.
So what needs to be done is to focus
on DeVoss statement the Education De-
partment will open the issue up for public
comment the rst step in potentially
writing new regulations. We need to
ensure a widespread response from ev-
eryone with a rational view of this issue.
Women from across the nation and espe-
cially college women need to write to the
Department of Education with their expe-
riences and views on this issue. They need
to share their reactions to how the Obama
guidance impacted them and their friends
at their colleges and universities.
Thinking men must also comment.
Men who understand the simple rule No
means no and who are prepared to abide
by that. At the same time we need to talk
about sex education in our schools.
Supporting appropriate and compre-
hensive sex-education programs has been
a big problem for many in the Trump
administration and the right wing that
elected him. It is crucial we educate both
boys and girls at a young age about sex
and about respect for each other when it
comes to sex. We need to talk about drugs
and alcohol and how they impact peoples
perceptions of right and wrong. We need
to teach them they arent an excuse for
bad behavior and for doing the wrong
thing. That education needs to start early.
What is crucial is we cant let the Trump
administration continue to retreat on
every issue of equality and the rights of
women, the LGBT community and every
minority community. We have to stand
up and resist all their attempts to do so.
We can do that by marching, speaking
out, responding to the request for com-
ments request in this case and by sup-
porting and voting for Democrats across
every level of government.

Md. LGBT lawmakers MIA on trans military ban
We need more vocal support
from out assembly members

Its been a great comfort to watch elected
ocials stand up for transgender service
members during these six weeks since
Donald Trump tweeted his intentions to
force them out of the military. Especially
amazing has been the outpouring of sup-
port from the six openly gay and lesbian
members of Marylands General Assembly.
Sen. Rich Madaleno issued a state-
ment that if elected governor he would
protect the transgender members of
Marylands National Guard units just as
Gov. Malloy did in Connecticut. Del. Mag-
gie McIntosh drafted a letter to Attorney
General Brian Frosh asking him to join
any lawsuit that might be brought against
the Department of Defense. Del. Luke
Clippinger promised a bill to streamline
the process for changing gender markers
in state identication. Del. Anne Kaiser
and Del. Bonnie Cullison announced a
joint fundraiser for a legal defense fund.

I know that for a lot of people, including
a lot of women, the movement for wom-
ens equality exists largely in the past.
That line, previewed from Hillary Clin-
tons maligned-in-advance, blame-ev-
erybody-else book-of-electoral-excuses
What Happened published this week,
provides an insight relevant to the cur-
rent state of LGBT politics and culture.
Given the rapid and dramatic pace of
broad gains in LGBT civil equality and cul-
tural acceptance, the prevalent proclivity
within our ranks for grievance collection
and victim portrayal may wear as thin as

support on social media, urging those af-
fected to contact OutServe-SLDN.
Of course, none of this actually hap-
pened. From Marylands gay and lesbian
legislators there has been almost total si-
lence on the topic. Sen. Madaleno oered
a few anodyne comments on Twitter and
Facebook. Del. Clippinger helpfully re-
tweeted the ACLU. Del. Kaiser expressed
disgust that the president would deni-
grate trans troops. But thats all.
Admittedly, its unjust to suggest that
members of the gay and lesbian caucus in
Annapolis are indierent to trans people.
Each of them played a role in passing the
Fairness for All Marylanders Act, and if
asked to address this issue they undoubt-
edly would have done so. Yet, their collec-
tive lack of a response is still discouraging.
Worse, it demonstrates a critical failure on
the part of one of the central organizations
in our continuing struggle for full equality.
At its core, the Gay and Lesbian Victory
Fund exists to identify, train, and elect
openly LGBT people. Its founders right-
fully understood that straight legislators
would nd it more dicult to oppose
Clintons lingering lament over losing.
Whether we will become chronic com-
plainers like Clinton who simply wont
stop whining is the question.
We run the same risk as she, suering
political allies reported by media to be
expressing in exasperation, I wish shed
just shut the f--- up and go away.
We will be measured by psychological
preparedness for the transition from ren-
egade to that of largely acceptance and as-
similation. The degree to which we lament
the loss of an historic outsider status
and the collective cohesiveness such es-
trangement once provided will be gauged.
A fundamental, if yet incomplete, cultural
integration and the corresponding reduc-
tion in community entities and commer-
cial establishments will characterize the
contours and context of modern gay life.
Fear of this development can be found
in the directives of too many LGBT activ-
ists. Our attention is increasingly being di-
verted to so-called intersectional issues
outside the shared realm of essential
matters of LGBT equality or community-
centric concerns accompanied by the
attendant presumption that sexual ori-
entation conveys proscribed political per-
spectives. Moreover, this implies there is
now a lot less on the gay agenda com-
manding group attention.

also anticipated that such elected o-
cials would be self-motivated advocates,
fully aware of issues aecting the LGBT
community based on their own lived ex-
perience. Countless politicians endorsed
by the Victory Fund became visible, out-
spoken leaders in the public debate and
helped pass many of the laws we enjoy
today. An endorsement from the Victory
Fund usually told the rest of us who was
best for the job, and with our support the
organization has elected a great many
candidates whove accomplished exactly
what they were supposed to.
Every one of Marylands gay and les-
bian legislators was endorsed by the Vic-
tory Fund. But if were expected to enter
the 2018 election cycle with any faith in
those endorsements, the Victory Fund
must hold these ocials accountable for
their duty to continue building a future
that sustains all of us.
It has now been two consecutive legisla-
tive sessions without a single substantive bill
aimed at further elevating our lot in the state,
We witnessed this dichotomy last sum-
mer when No Justice No Pride radicals pil-
loried wholesale the LGBT community and
local Pride celebrations in multiple cities
for not protesting pipelines, prisons, police,
and the lending policies of banks. Nothing
belies that a signicant amount has been
accomplished quite like a programmatic
attempt to shift the focus toward other top-
ics. The inherent irony implicit in these ad-
monitions is that LGBT issues are no longer
as intrinsically relevant due to the collab-
orative success and community progress
toward fair and equal treatment.
Clintons legacy condemnation of de-
plorables is similarly emblematic of this
out-of-the-mainstream LGBT political ide-
ology. Fairly or not, it has led to a popular-
ized and ignoble reputation for wanting
to punish opponents, not persuade them.
We are seen as desiring to exact revenge
for, or at least restriction of and recrimina-
tion against, even the slightest divergence
outside a groupthink political posture and
cultural attitude. Theres no pause any-
more in the impatience of some for abso-
lutist behavior. No slight is too small or no
oense too minor, with no modulation or
accommodation permitted.
If were to expand our sights on issues
of community concern, we are notably
casting our gaze in the wrong direction.

and our gay and lesbian legislators shouldnt
need us to ask them to do something. They
should be reaching out to members of the
transgender community to understand how
they can advance the aims of the Fairness
for All Marylanders Act. They should be so-
liciting ideas from leaders in local PFLAG and
GLSEN chapters about the best ways to sup-
port LGBT youth. They should be speaking
with health ocials and HIV activists to learn
how to improve access to PrEP, testing, and
treatment. They should put an end to HIV
criminalization. And they should be the rst
and loudest voices we hear in the local me-
dia when our enemies attack.
The Victory Fund and its mission are
still essential in our struggle to achieve
full equality. We need openly LGBT peo-
ple in public oce, and we need an orga-
nization like the Victory Fund to help elect
them. But if the ones weve got in Mary-
land cant do the job, then were gonna
need the Victory Fund to help us identify,
train, and elect some new ones.

Given that LGBT entrepreneurs and
small-to-moderate-size enterprise own-
ers and operators are widely estimated to
represent fully 10 percent or more of our
demographic cohort, much higher than
that of the population as a whole, com-
munity leaders might better turn their at-
tention toward issues of concern to those
engaged in business.
Although an increasingly hostile-to-
enterprise leftist Democratic leadership
doesnt appear to care, it was not long
ago that the business community was
much more magnanimous toward the
party. Today, however, surveys indicate
that an overwhelming supermajority be-
tween 3-of-4 and 4-of-5 business opera-
tors now consistently support Republican
candidates at the local, state, and federal
levels. This widespread opposition to
Democratic policies includes a sizable, if
largely silent, contingent of lesbian and
gay enterprise leaders.
National politics and political parties
are currently a mess of internal disrup-
tion and external dysfunction. Voter af-
nity for both parties is at a dismal level
and record-setting low.
Hillary Clintons observation regarding
gender politics is an important lesson, and

Hollywood loves nostalgia. Head to
Youtube or Netix and you can stumble
onto a variety of much loved shows from
yesteryear. But what if your much-loved,
much-missed show could actually return to
television? Thats exactly what has happened
with NBCs successful series Will & Grace,
which in its heyday 11 years ago, had 83
Emmy nominations and 16 wins.
The successful series followed a gay
man (Eric McCormack) and his straight,
female best friend (Debra Messing) and
ran on the network from 1998 to 2006.
Few shows have ever come back for
more than reunion specials. The Dallas
reboot aired three seasons on TNT, but
its rare. Dynasty is coming back this fall
but with a whole new cast. After ending in
1997, Roseanne is slated to return with
eight new episodes in early 2018.
For Will & Grace, it all started when
the cast reunited for a 10-minute episode
about the U.S. presidential election, as
the two candidates, Donald Trump and
Hillary Clinton, were about to debate. An
outpouring of love from the fans came in
and presto the show was brought back
to life.
At the TV Critics Press Tour, the cast
Messing, McCormack, Sean Hayes and Megan
Mullally talked about how good it felt to be
together again at their rst table read.
When we sat down together, it just
came to life in a way that I had never
experienced with anything else or since,
Messing says. Because we all started out
in the theater and we sort of grew as artists,
as collaborators, it very quickly became a
place that was very safe to try things and
to fail. I think funny happens when you
take risks. I like to think of the four of us as
I think of comedy as music. Each one of
us is a different instrument. And when we
play together, were at our best.
The veteran actress likened the
experience to coming home.
We laughed so hard. For the last year,
its been a confusing time and I havent
laughed very much, and to come back
together and to laugh out loud and to
be surprised by one another and to have
new stories to tell and to have another
opportunity to do it, its a no-brainer.
McCormack was thrilled by the response
from the fans and co-creator/executive
producers, Max Mutchnick and David Kohan.
Theres been a very non-cynical, non-
judgmental response, just a positive glass-
more-than-half-full response that made
me think, Well, then, we have a place for
this show. Were not going to be ghting
an uphill battle, And I thought, Why not?
Why would we not?
But dont expect the series to pick up
where the show left off during the nale

The fall theater season promises
an especially diverse mix of classics,
innovative new works and some exciting
instances of non-traditional casting. And
as always, the productions are fueled in
large part by LGBT talent and energy.
Mosaic Theater Company
(mosaictheater.org) presents The Devils
Music: The Life & Blues of Bessie
Smith through Sept. 24. This bawdy,
bluesy one-woman piece on the life
of a unapologetically bisexual singing
legend features an extraordinarily drawn
performance by Miche Braden.
At GALA Hispanic Theatre (galatheatre.
org) out director Jose Carrasquillo is
staging Don Juan Tenorio, the Infamous
Seducer of All Times (through Oct.
1) by out playwright Nando Lpez
(author of GALAs Helen Hayes Award-
winning Yerma). Its a new, high-voltage
adaptation of the legendary lovers tale.
The cast includes Iker Lastra, Luz Nicols
and out actor Carlos Castillo.
Factory 449: a theater collective
(factory449.org) presents the hotly
anticipated production of Cordelia Lynns
Lela & Co. (through Oct. 1). Based on
a true story, the play follows 14-year-
old Lela (celebrated local actor Felicia
Curry) as she marries and is relocated
to an unnamed war-torn country where
she nds herself isolated, locked up and
eventually enslaved. Out actor/director

Signature Theatres (sigtheatre.org) is
kicking the season off with an exquisite
production of Stephen Sondheims A

Wilderness (Oct 12-15), a new
multimedia documentary theater work.
Its derived from the real-life stories of
six families exploring issues of mental

identity and features an evocative folk-rock
score, video projections and emotionally
charged movement.
And for a substantially longer stay, the
Kennedy Center hosts the latest tour of
The Book of Mormon (Oct. 24-Nov. 19).
Trey Parker and Matt Stones Tony Award-
winning musical follows the adventures of
a mismatched pair of missionaries, sent far
from home to spread the Good Word.

A quick reminder before we get started
in earnest: the D.C. Shorts Film Festival
and Screenplay Competition is running
now and continues through the weekend.
It closes Sunday, Sept. 17.
The fall LGBT movie season gets off
to a rousing start on Oct. 15 with the
inspirational documentary Dolores. The
lm chronicles the passionate life of ery
activist Dolores Huerta, who co-founded
the rst farm worker unions with Cesar
Chavez. One of the most deant feminists
of the 20th century, Huerta has been a
leader in the ght for racial and social
justice and has been a vocal advocate for
LGBT rights.
The AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural
Center (a.com/silver), always a great
showcase for Hollywood classics, indie
lms and international cinema, kicks off
its fall season with the amazing AFI Latin
American Film Festival. Running through
Oct. 14, the festival includes Chavela,
a documentary about Chavela Vargas, a
legendary musician who also served as a
reluctant LGBT icon, and The Untamed,
a psychosexual thriller from Mexico.
Other highlights of the festival include
The Queen of Spain starring Penlope
Cruz and Breadcrumbs with Cecilia
Roth. Other AFI fall programming includes
the Spooky Movie International Horror
Film Festival, the Silent Cinema Showcase
and a celebration of the Joan Fontaine
Centennial.
The Washington Jewish Film Festival
(wjff.org) kicks off its fall programming
with 5777: A Year in Review. In
preparation for the celebration of Rosh
Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, WJFF
commemorates the incredible cinematic
contributions of major Jewish artists who
have recently passed away. Highlights
include screenings of Postcards from
the Edge (a tribute to Carrie Fisher),
The Unsinkable Molly Brown (Debbie
Reynolds) and McCabe and Mrs. Miller
(composer Leonard Cohen).
Battle of the Sexes looks back on
the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean
King (who came out in 1981) and Bobby

take place at the newly renovated SNF
Parkway Theatre in Baltimore.
The festival is also running a special
double feature of Magic Mike and
Magic Mike XXL on Oct. 2.
A Very Sordid Wedding is nally
walking down the aisle in Washington for
one night only. On Oct. 3 at the Avalon
Theatre, writer/director Del Shores will be
on hand to present the sequel to his cult
favorite Sordid Lives (2000).
On Oct. 6, Netix screens David Frances
new documentary The Death and Life
of Marsha P. Johnson. France (How to
Survive a Plague) turns his lens on the life
of the pioneering trans activist who was a
ringleader at the Stonewall Riots in 1969
and a leader in the LGBT movement until
her mysterious death in 1992.
The annual Reel Afrmations Film
Festival (reelafrmations) runs Oct. 12-
15 at the Tivoli Theatre. The Festival
opens with Gods Own Country, a
festival circuit favorite about gay love on
a Yorkshire farm, and closes with Freak
Show, a portrait of an eccentric kid in an
ultra-conservative high school. The festival
also includes several other feature length
movies and three programs of LGBT shorts.
In the meanwhile, the Reel Afrmations
monthly XTRA lm series continues with
Raising Zoey on Sept. 29, Cold Breath
on Nov. 11 and the World AIDS Day
screening of Small Town Rage on Dec. 1.
The Middleburg Film Festival (Oct.
19-22) is a potent blend of politics and
cinema set in the middle of Virginias
scenic wine and horse country. Founded
by entrepreneur and lm producer
Sheila Johnson, the festival features
the latest narrative and documentary
lms from around the world, including
sneak peeks at holiday releases. The
event (middleburglm.org) also includes
celebrity speakers, performances and
master classes.

Wonder Womans real origin story is
revealed in Professor Marston and the
Wonder Women (Nov. 3). Written and
directed by Angela Robinson (Hung and
The L Word), the movie tells the true story
of William Moulton Marston who drew on
his unique psychological theories and his
unconventional polyamorous relationship
to create the iconic (and initially quite
controversial) comic book. Marston is

writer/director Robin Campillo is a deeply
moving drama about the personal,
political and erotic lives of Parisian AIDS
activists in the 1990s. Slated for a Nov. 17
D.C. release, this Cannes favorite offers a
refreshing reconsideration of the AIDS
crisis from an international perspective.
Finally, the jam-packed LGBT fall movie
season closes with two extraordinary
releases: Tom of Finland (Dec. 8), a
biopic of the late Finnish artist known for
his homoerotic fetish art, and the highly
anticipated Call Me by Your Name
(Dec. 15). Set in Italy in the 1980s, it tells of
the passionate relationship between teen
Elio and Oliver, an academic staying at the
family villa. James Ivory adapted it from
the novel by Andre Aciman.

Dance Summit this weekend (Sept. 15-17).
Various dance genres from ballet and hip
hop to Afro-Caribbean and contemporary
will have workshops led by top local dance
instructors in the eld.
Vladimir Angelov, Steve Barberio,
Cameron Bennett, Stephen Clapp and
more will be featured speakers and
workshop leaders. Performances, yoga,
networking events, an undoing racism
workshop and other actives will also be
offered over the two days.
A full weekend pass is $75. Single day
passes are $40. Evening-only passes for

The ninth annual VelocityDC Dance

contemporary, African, Indian, ballet, urban

among fall TV highlights

The fall LGBT TV season got off to an
explosive start with the return of Narcos
to Netix on Sept. 1. Based on the violent
history of the Cali Cartel in Colombia,
season three picks up after the death of
Pablo Escobar. Gay hitman Pacho Herrera
(Alberto Ammann) rises to the top ranks
of the cocaine cartel; the amboyant
character is featured in steamy sex scenes
and has quickly become a fan favorite.
The rst new show of the LGBT TV season
was American Horror Story: Cult on FX.
Set in a small Michigan town, season seven
of the popular anthology series is the rst
major scripted show to deal directly with
the political and social aftermath of the
2016 presidential election.
The cast is led by Ryan Murphy regulars
Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters. Paulson
and Alison Pill play Ally and Ivy Mayfair-
Richards, Clinton supporters who are
terried by the outcome of the election
and who begin to see evil clowns
everywhere. Peters plays Kai Anderson, a
Trump supporter who is energized by the
outcome of the election.
Other new shows include:
The Deuce looks back at the 1970s porn
industry in New York City. James Franco stars
as the twin Mancini brothers, Vinnie (good)
and Frankie (bad); Maggie Gyllenhaal plays
porn actress Eileen Candy Merrill. Currently
running on HBO, the series includes plenty
of queer content, including Chris Coy as gay
bartender Paul Hendrickson.
LogoTV.com is streaming Made to
Model: Trans Beauty in Fashion, a
celebration of the diverse models who

Star Trek: Discovery boldly goes
where no other Star Trek television
series has gone before: it includes openly
gay characters. Out actor Anthony Rapp
(Rent) plays Lieutenant Paul Stamets,
an astromycologist (fungus expert) and
Stareet science ofcer aboard the
Starship Discovery. Out actor Wilson Cruz
(Rent and My So-Called Life) plays his
partner, Dr. Hugh Culber. The new series
blasts off on CBS All-Access on Sept. 25.
The most highly anticipated television
show of the fall season may be the return
of Will & Grace. The queer quartet will
resume their shenanigans on NBC on Sept.
28. Season nine will ignore the dreary
series nale which aired on May 18, 2006
and give the returning characters a fresh
start. Based on the enthusiastic response
from dedicated fans, the new Will &
Grace has already been renewed for a
second season.
The campy 1980s nighttime soap
Dynasty is perhaps best remembered
for its vicious cat ghts, glamorous gowns
and conspicuous consumption, but it
made television history with its ground-
breaking portrayal of mature women
who were powerful and sexy and for the
inclusion of a gay male character. While
the cast of the reboot, which premieres on
Oct. 11 on the CW, is noticeably younger
than the original cast, it is also noticeably
more diverse.
The series returns to familiar story lines
about the Carringtons and the Colbys,
two rich Colorado families battling over
business empires and family loyalties.
Grant Show (Melrose Place) plays
patriarch Blake Carrington and James
Mackay (The Dressmaker) plays his
openly gay son Stephen. Their love
interests are Cristal Flores and her nephew
Sammy Joe (played by Hispanic actors

Nathalie Kelley and Rafael de la Fuente); in
the original series Sammy Jo was played
by Heather Locklear. In the early episodes
of the reboot, the Colbys are represented

as Jeff and Wakeema Hollis as Monique.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of
the decriminalization of gay sex in the United
Kingdom, the BBC has commissioned a
series of eight monologues about LGBT
life. The writers include Jackie Clune,
Mark Gatiss and Brian Fillis; the actors
include Alan Cummings, Russell Tovey, Ben
Whishaw, Gemma Whalen and Rebecca
Front. Queers premieres on BBC
America on Oct. 14.
Queer director Bryan Singer is using his
artistic superpowers to help move Marvels
X-Men franchise to the small screen. He
served as director and executive producer
for the pilot episode of The Gifted
which airs on Oct. 2 on Fox. Marvel is
also represented on television this fall
by Runaways. Starting Nov. 21 on
Hulu, the series about teens eeing their
extra-terrestrial parents includes lesbian
Karolina Dean (played by Virginia Gardner)
in the diverse cast.
Following on Hulus runaway success
with The Handmaids Tale, Netix brings
Margaret Atwoods novel Alias Grace
to the small screen on Nov. 3. Loosely
based on a true case, the six-hour mini-
series tells the story of Grace Marks (Sara
Gadon), who was convicted (and later
exonerated) for the murders of her boss,
Thomas Kinnear (Paul Gross), and his
maid/mistress Nancy Montgomery (Anna
Paquin) in Canada in 1843. Directed by
Sarah Polley, this passionate tale of love
and murder also tackles issues of class,
gender and sexuality.

Lots of fan favorites with LGBT characters
will also be returning this fall. Already
back on the airwaves are Tig Notaros
One Mississippi on Amazon, Top of
the Lake: China Girl directed by Jane
Campion and starring Nicole Kidman and
Elisabeth Moss (the Sundance Channel);
Broad City (Comedy Central); and
Better Things (FX).
The dysfunctional clan of transwoman
Maura Pfefferman (Jeffrey Tambor) has
also returned to Amazon for season four of
Transparent. The Lyons family returns to
Fox on Sept. 27 for season four of Empire.
Gay son Jamal (played by out actor Jussie
Smollett) gets involved in a scandal; Cookie
(award-winning actor Taraji P. Henson) stirs
up more trouble; and, the entire cast helps
to launch the second season of Star
which returns on the same night.
Although its slipping in the ratings,
Modern Family comes back to ABC on
Sept. 27 for season nine. The award-winning
show tracks the antics of the extended
Pritchett family, including husbands Mitchell
Pritchett and Cameron Tucker (Jesse Tyler
Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet).
Although creator Shonda Rhimes is
moving to Netix, her queer-friendly
series How to Get Away with Murder
returns to ABC on Sept. 28. Season four
will reportedly include the wedding of
interracial gay couple Conner and Oliver
(Jake Falahee and Conrad Ricamora).
As the fall TV season continues, a
delightfully diverse crew of queer characters
will reappear in such returning shows
as Supergirl, Riverdale, Crazy
Ex-Girlfriend, Stranger Things,
Shameless, The Girlfriend Experience,
Search Party, The Walking Dead and
The Shannara Chronicles.

Torah scrolls that survived the Holocaust,
the worlds smallest Bible and more.

The fall season begins with a bang
as pop/R&B superstar the Weeknd
brings his Starboy Legend of the Fall
2017 World Tour to Capital One Arena,
formerly the Verizon Center (601 F Street,

The new release schedule for fall is
loaded with long-awaited new albums
from some of the biggest stars in music.
There will be plenty of new tunes to keep
music fans occupied.
Today (Friday, Sept. 15) is highlighted
by the latest from local favorite Dave
Grohl and Foo Fighters, who unleash their
ninth studio album, Concrete and Gold,
featuring the electrifying rst single Run.
Also out is a live album and DVD
documenting Madonnas record-breaking
Rebel Heart Tour. Also out is the latest from
new wave pioneer Gary Numan, Savage
(Songs From a Broken World), Yusuf
(formerly Cat Stevens) with The Laughing
Apple, Swedish EDM duo Galantis are
back with The Aviary, former Vampire
Weekend mainstay Rostom will release his
solo debut Half-Light and Metric vocalist
Emily Haines is set to release her new solo
album Choir of the Mind.
More big new releases arrive the
following week, with new wave revivalists
the Killers leading the way with Wonderful
Wonderful. Also dropping Sept. 22 is
Double Dutchess, the long-awaited
second solo album by Black-Eyed Peas
diva Fergie. It comes 11 years after her
smash The Duchess, but judging from the
singles so far it will be well worth the wait.

have a new album on the 29th, Desire,
including the new single Ready to Go.
Former Oasis singer Liam Gallagher
has set his new solo album As You Were
Available for an Oct. 6 release. Alternative
rockers Wolf Parade are also back on
the sixth with Cry Cry Cry, along with
the debut album by the much-buzzed
about R&B vocalist Kelela, the latest from
indie-popsters Ducktails, Jersey Devil,
the new solo effort by openly gay Bloc
Party vocalist Kele Okereke, Fatherland
and glam-rockers the Darkness with

critically beloved St. Vincent will deliver
one of the years most anticipated albums
with MASSEDUCTION. Also scheduled
for the 13th are new albums by Beck,
Colors; legendary Led Zeppelin frontman
Robert Plant, Carry Fire; William Patrick
(aka Billy) Corgan with his collaboration
with producer Rick Rubin, Ogilala; and
an intriguing collaboration between uber-
talented troubadours Courtney Barnett
and Kurt Vile, Lotta Sea Lice.
Also out Oct. 13 is The Con X: Covers,
a 10th anniversary celebration of The
Con by openly gay sisters Tegan and
Sara with all of that classic albums songs
covered by various artists.
Look for a newly remastered and
expanded edition of the Smiths The
Queen is Dead on Oct. 20. Originally
released in 1986, its widely considered
one of their nest efforts.
October wraps up with two of the falls
biggest releases: Kelly Clarkson drops
her latest, Meaning of Life, on Oct. 27,
and on the same date Weezer returns
with Pacic Daydream. The-Dream
also hits on the 27th with Love Affair,
featuring the hit single Summer Body,
and emo-rockers the Used return with
The Canyon.
The much-anticipated new Taylor
Swift album, Reputation, arrives Nov.
10. Led by smash single Look What You
Made Me Do, its likely to be the seasons
biggest-selling release. Also hitting on the
10th is the latest from moody alt-rockers
Evanescence, Synthesis.
Nov. 17 is highlighted by the latest from
that icon of wit and misery, Morrissey,
who is back with Low in High School.
The season is capped by the long-
promised Songs of Experience by U2,
the follow-up to their outstanding 2014
release Songs of Innocence. Presumably,
though, the new album wont show up on
everyones iPhone automatically, or at least
we can hope.
Kanye West may (or may not) unload
his latest, reportedly titled Turbo Grafx
16, this fall as always, he is hard to
predict. Bjork is working with acclaimed
gay electronic visionary Arca on an album
expected in November, with the rst single
called The Gate.
Other artists expected to release new
albums this fall but have yet to announce
dates include Tei Shi, Sam Smith (who
just released a new single, Too Good
At Goodbyes), Ne-Yo, Paloma Faith,
Thirty Seconds to Mars, En Vogue, 80s
heroes Tears for Fears, 90s rockers the
Offspring, Travis Scott, Charli XCX,
Barenaked Ladies, Nas, Clean Bandit,
Kylie Minogue, MGMT, Sara Bareilles,
Zayn, Tove Lo, Kiesza, Avril Lavigne,
Mariah Carey, up-and-coming rapper
Kamaiyah, Marilyn Manson and a
Christmas offering from one of pops
hottest stars, Sia. Inevitably some of these
will get bumped to 2018.

Washington National Opera has
launched its season with Verdis Aida, the
rst time its been in the Kennedy Center
Opera House in 25 years. It continues
through Sept. 23. Details at kennedy-

simulcast at Nationals Park on Saturday,
Sept. 23 for Opera in the Outeld.
Queer organist Cameron Carpenter
returns to the Kennedy Center Concert
Hall where hes performed several
times Sept. 28 and 30 for appearances
with the National Symphony Orchestra
with performances of works by Aaron
Copland and Leonard Bernstein and other
American composers. Christian Macelaru
conducts. Its part of the Bernstein at 100
series. Tickets range from $15-89.
Other highlights in the Bernstein (gay
though married to a woman) at 100 series
include an exhibit in the Terrace Gallery
that runs through Nov. 5, a Bernstein on

Regional food fests offer

tasty treats; down-home fun

Tis the season for getting outdoors to

eat and drink in the fall sunshine, from
freshly fried apple cider doughnuts to
rich pumpkin ales. In fact, you could nd
a food-focused festival on any given
weekend somewhere in the region.
Thats the perk of living in a metro area
that stretches from the Chesapeake Bay to
the Blue Ridge Mountains. However, the
weekend of Sept. 22-24 promises to be
particularly busy, so start planning now so
that you can make the most of every bite,
sip and slurp.

Friday, Sept. 22:

Oktoberfest at Wunder Garten (1st

and L streets, N.E; wundergartendc.
com): Start the weekend off right by
heading to this outdoor beer garden for
the traditional tapping of the rst keg of
beer, which heralds the beginning of this
three-day event. The tapping will be at 5
p.m., accompanied by the joyful shouts of
Ozapft is! Its tapped! followed by
live music (get ready to polka) and a variety
of Bavarian-style beers, including Spaten,
Hofbruhaus and Weihenstephaner,
along with a selection of locally brewed
seasonal beers. Food will be provided by
Caf Berlin, the Capitol Hill bistro dishing
up tasty authentic German fare, from
bratwurst and sauerkraut to bretzels und
obatzter and gurkensalat.
Saturday, Sept. 23:
Oyster Wars (The Salt Line, 79 Potomac
Ave., S.E.; thesaltline.com): Following
the Civil War, the Chesapeake Bay was
the setting until 1959 for sometimes
violent skirmishes between watermen
from Maryland and Virginia, but you
can enjoy the fruits of the Chesapeake
without bloodshed at the Salt Lines more
celebratory Oyster Wars. Several oyster
farms, including Marylands Harris Creek
Oyster Company and Tangier Island Oyster
Company in Virginia, will offer their freshest
bivalves, along with beer from Stillwater
Artisanal in Baltimore and Richmonds
The region is teeming with fall events. Some brewers are offering crafts they dont provide anywhere else.

includes all-you-can-eat oysters and chefs
tastings, and a portion of ticket sales will
support the Oyster Recovery Partnership
and the Anacostia Riverkeeper.
Snallygaster 2017 (1st and M streets,
S.E.; snallygasterdc.com): Calling itself
the areas beastliest beer festival,
Snallygaster is the annual fundraiser for
Arcadia, a nonprot program that includes
a demonstration farm in Alexandria,
two mobile farmers markets serving
underserved local communities, and a
program that trains veterans as farmers.
Featuring no fewer than 350 craft beers
and ciders handpicked by Greg Engert,
beer director of Neighborhood Restaurant
Group, Engert asks brewers to provide
off-the-beaten-path options for the
festival, so youll nd brews that arent
available anywhere else. Some of this
years offerings include Lickinghole Creek
Craft Brewerys Eat It Too, a barrel-aged
quadrupel with apples and cinnamon; a
black raspberry sour red ale from Captain
Lawrence Brewing Company; and Dogsh
Heads Carobock, a weizenbock made
with carob pods and vanilla beans.
Sunday, Sept. 24:
Taste of Georgetown (K Street, N.W.
between Wisconsin Ave. and Thomas
Jefferson St.; tasteofgeorgetown.com): Now
in its 24th year, the Taste of Georgetown,
beneting the Georgetown Ministry Center,
showcases more than 30 restaurants nestled
inside the citys oldest enclave. You can
drink beer and wine while checking out the
booths; some of the 60 signature dishes
to keep an eye out for include avocado
burrata bruschetta from ENO Wine Bar;
cream potato & kale tacos with pepper jack,
green sauce and pickled onion from Chaia;
spiced pear hand pies from Dog Tag Bakery;
and trufed mac n cheese from the Yard
at the Ritz-Carlton. To add a little bit of an
Ivy League frat party atmosphere, sign up
for one of the eating competitions, such as
eating as many powdered sugar doughnuts,

D.C. State Fair (Waterfront Station,
375 and 425 M St., S.W.; dcstatefair.org):
Heck, D.C. may not actually be a state,
but that doesnt keep us from having
our very own state fair, complete with an
apple pie competition, homegrown oddly
shaped vegetables on display and a pet
parade. If you want to participate in one
of the food competitions, registration
is open until Sept. 20; some of the truly
D.C.-centric categories include those for
homemade mumbo sauce and pupusas,
or you might want to try your hand at
Best Pickled Pepper, Best Non-Fruit Pie,
or Best Bud and, yes, THC potency will
be tested on that one. If youre not a home
cook or grower, then consider entering the
watermelon seed-spitting contest. It really
doesnt get more down-home than that.

Festival returns to the Inner Harbor
Promenade Sept. 22-24. The festival,
which is free and open to the public from

of the literary stars who will be presenting
include Nigerian author Chimamanda
Ngozi Adichie, childrens book writer

In his latest conceptual series, Beautiful
Berlin Boys (Kehrer Verlag, Sept. 12),
Iranian American photographer, Ashkan
community ravaged by the AIDS epidemic
in 1980s New York City through nude
photographs of gay artists in modern-day
Berlin. In compiling the spare, intimate
portraits, Sahihi discovered a haunting
familiarity in his subjects, who recall the gay
avant garde of his past while representing
the newest generation of gay men in what
he considers todays creative capital.
True Sex: the Lives of Trans Men at
the Turn of the Twentieth Century by
Emily Skidmore (NYU Press, Sept. 19) tells
the overlooked stories of 18 trans men who
assimilated into small town communities
during the late 1800s. Skidmore pieces
together reports from local newspapers,
medical journals and other sources to offer
queer narratives that were not cosmopolitan
or subversive, but rather quite ordinary,
challenging our preconceived notions of
community, rural identity and who we think
of as trans or queer.
Amidst political uncertainty surrounding
LGBT rights, Nasty Women: Feminism,
Resistance, and Revolution in Trumps
and Kate Harding (Picador, Oct. 3) is an
inspiring collection of essays from leading
feminist writers who describe how we
got here and how we can resist. Featured
essays include Samantha Irby on living as
a queer black woman in rural America,
Randa Jarrar on cross country travel as
a queer Muslim woman and Meredith

The Book of Love and Hate, a new
novel from Lambda Literary Award winner

With recipes written as deliciously
as they taste, The Juhu Beach Club
Cookbook: Indian Spice, Oakland Soul
by Preeti Mistry and Sarah Henry (Running
Press, Oct. 31) has already sent the foodie
world into a frenzy well beyond the Bay
Area. Mistry, a gay Indian American chef
beloved for her big personality, provides
a contemporary spin on the traditional
Indian cooking she grew up with in this
eclectic collection of street food, comfort
classics and haute cuisine.
Andrea Lawlors debut novel, Paul
Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl (Rescue
Press, Nov. 1), offers a witty and raucous
portrait of LGBT radicalism during the
early 90s. The story follows Paul Polydoris,
who studies queer theory and writes
provocative zines when not tending bar
at the local gay club. Lawlor portrays
an exhilarating picaresque hero whose
identity seesaws from Riot Grrl to leather
cub as he parties through era staples, such
as the Michigan Womyns Festival.
As a blend of memoir, true crime and
ghost story, Mean by Myriam Gurba
(Coffee House Press, Nov. 14) is difcult to
categorize, but hilarious and poignant at
every twist and turn. Gurba, a spoken-word
performer and visual artist, tells her own
coming of age story as a queer, mixed-
race Chicana in California. Mean tackles
themes of sexual violence, racism and
homophobia with brassiness and heart as
multilayered as Gurbas approach to genre.
Every Night is Saturday Night: A
Country Girls Journey to the Rock &
Roll Hall of Fame (BMG, Nov. 14), written
alongside Scott B. Bomar, is the long-
awaited autobiography of Wanda Jackson,
the legendary Queen of Rockabilly, First
Lady of Rock & Roll and treasured gay
icon. Jackson shares personal stories on
her relationship with Elvis Presley, her faith
and the challenges she faced in bringing
sex appeal to country music and femininity
to Rock & Roll. The book also features a
foreword by Elvis Costello.
In need of some playlist inspiration?
David Bowie Made Me Gay by Darryl
W. Bullock (The Overlook Press, Nov. 21)
is a highly comprehensive history of LGBT
music, spanning a century from early jazz
and blues to todays most recognizable pop
stars out of the closet. Bullock meticulously
chronicles the LGBT communitys vast
inuence on music through a historical
lens, revealing how societys oscillation
between acceptance and persecution has
shaped what we listen to today.
In Black on Both Sides: A Racial History
of Trans Identity (University of Minnesota
Press, Dec. 5), C. Riley Snorton uncovers the
obscured or erased narratives of black trans
women in the United States, beginning
with the mid-19th century and continuing
through present-day oppression and
resistance. Snorton, a professor of Africana
studies and feminist, gender and sexuality
studies at Cornell University, builds on
early sexological writings, fugitive slave
stories, Afro-modernist literature and other
materials to craft this essential account of
black trans history.

Murder Under the Fig Tree: A
Palestine Mystery, by Kate Jessica
Raphael (She Writes Press), is a murder
mystery novel that draws Rania Bakara, a
Palestinian policewoman, deep into the
underground Palestinian gay scene as she

village adjacent to her own. The book is

The Ultimate Guide to Gay Dads:
Everything You Need to Know About
LGBT Parenting But Are (Mostly) Afraid
to Ask, by Eric Rosswood (Mango), is a
generous resource for gay and bisexual
men who are thinking about starting a
family together. The guide is $13.85 and
releases Oct. 24.
Mostly Straight: Sexual Fluidity
among Men by Ritch C. Savin-Williams
(Harvard University Press) is a biological,
empirical and psychological research-
based exploration of the personal stories
of 40 young men who identify as sexually
uid or mostly straight. The book is

Patient Zero and the Making of the
AIDS Epidemic, by Richard A. McKay
(University of Chicago Press), investigates
the introduction of the term patient zero
into the popular lexicon during the 1980s
AIDS epidemic. The book thoughtfully
traces the life of Gatan Dugas, who was
incorrectly identied (and vilied) as
the rst AIDS case in North America. It is

One of the things when we thought
about bringing this back was what was it
that we missed? And I think we missed the
dynamic between the four of them more
than we missed the possibility of seeing
what their lives would be like as parents.
During the panel, a critic brought up
that the show has often been credited
with educating TV audiences about the
LGBT community.
Weve always said that the good effects that
we had were fantastic gravy, that we set out to
be funny to be a sitcom that brought as many
people in as possible, McCormack says.
When the series started, it was
considered revolutionary to have two
gay characters, Messing says.
So what we were able to address at
the time was LGB. We stopped at B, and
my hope is that now we can nish the
alphabet. And with gender identity, theres
so many things that are being discussed in
our culture now, she says.
This show is always about inclusion,
Mutchnick says. Thats what we started
with and thats the type of people they are.
I think when we come back, we will get
to it again. But its just going to be about
trying to make the funniest shows that we
can with these characters passing through
the life that you all know that is taking
place out there right now.
In 2012, Vice President Joe Biden
made headlines when he endorsed equal
marriage rights for gay and lesbian people
and said the show did more to educate
the American public more than almost
anything anybody has done so far. People
fear that which is different. Now theyre
beginning to understand.
Since the show aired, Hayes has publicly
come out as gay.

season for chukkas and cardigans. Its
also time for winery tours, Oktoberfests
and maybe a trek to the pumpkin patch.
All you need now is a rugged ride to take
you there.

For the compact Compass this year,
Jeep ditched the dorky design and
replaced it with a strapping exterior.
Think of it as Cherokee-lite, with svelte
side panels and a handsome windswept
grill. While there are four trim levels,
the top-of-the-line Compass Limited,
available only in all-wheel drive, boasts
larger wheels, chrome trim and a
host of luxury features: heated front
seats, heated steering wheel, dual-
zone climate control and a stop-start
engine function to help save gas. Safety
options add brake assist, automatic
high beams, lane-departure warning,
collision alert and more. The modish
cabin also echoes the Cherokee,
from the chiseled dash to the easy-
to-use infotainment system. Most
impressive is the improved cornering,
smooth suspension and refined off-
road capability. Biggest downside: the
sluggish engine. Though such anemic
acceleration isnt ideal, its hard to
ignore just how much the Compass has

First-time buyers, Im sorry to be the one
to tell you this, but your first home will (more
than likely) NOT be your dream home.
Weve all dreamed the American Dream
of owning our very own home. For many,
that dream has morphed into the HGTV
dream, which includes sparkling counter-
tops and appliances in an open-concept
kitchen, plenty of outdoor space for en-
tertaining or for a dog and kids to enjoy,
off-street parking and yes, a walkable
location in the heart of the action. Who
wouldnt want these things? I know I do!
Its easy for us, as buyers, to get ahead
of ourselves and:
search fruitlessly for a home that
doesnt exist;
stretch your budget to an uncomfort-
able level to keep up with your idea of
what your first house or forever home
should be;
or put off buying until you can afford
to buy The Dream House when you are
making more money down the line, get
married, have kids, or whatever it is you
are using to justify the decision to wait to
buy a house.
I see this scenario time and again with

That starter home is probably not going to be your dream home.

beat themselves up because they cant af-
ford their dream house, so they wait. In-
terest rates go up, the market improves,
then they are in the same boat a few
years later when they come back to ex-
plore buying the next time around.
Im here to tell you some advice that
might be hard to swallow for my fellow
millennials. If you can realistically afford
to, pull the trigger and buy a home that
is comfortably within your budget to get
your foot in the door of homeownership.
Yes, even if that house is smaller than

you imagined, has avocado green tile and
mustard yellow appliances, or isnt in the
exact neighborhood where all of your
friends are renting.
Why you ask? Its simple. Homeowner-
ship is proven to be one of the best ways
to set yourself up for a strong financial
future, especially in the relatively stable
D.C. metro area. Instead of writing a rent
check to your landlord, you can pay a sim-
ilar amount for a mortgage with a big
chunk of that payment going to pay down
your equity. You are basically paying into
a built-in savings account for yourself.

Not to mention, you will start seeing a
much better tax break from Uncle Sam.
Some may argue that you should wait
and save until you can afford a house that
you will be in for many years to come -
and maybe you should. It really depends
on your individual situation. But for
most first-time buyers, the reality is that
they will NOT be in the same house for
many years to come. Maybe they know
they will leave the area, or know they
will want to have kids (or more kids) and
need more space or a different school
system, or know they will be making a lot
more money down the line. The point is,
peoples lives, needs, tastes, preferences
and finances change over time - and their
homes usually change with them.
So, brace yourself and buy a house
thats a sound financial investment, even if
it isnt that sexy first home you envisioned.
Get your hands dirty and make it yours.
In a few years, youll have paid down your
mortgage enough to buy something a little
bit bigger and a little bit better.
My advice? Be different. Be smart. Be a
homeowner and set yourself up for finan-
cial freedom in the future.
