UEEA1313 - Basic Electronics Assignment

Assignment

Introduction
This assignment accounts for 10% marks. Form groups of up to six (6) students and
jointly submit a report. Your group partners may come from any course. If you have no
partner, then write/submit your own report. Use the standard cover (see the next page).

Important date:
Due date: Week 12 Wed 6pm (extension is only allowed in case of valid reason)
Submission: Submit one printed report for your group to Mr Lau Kean Hong (Francis),
room 51 zone 3 level 8 (no other submission methods)

Given that =130, VBE(on)=0.7V, VCE(sat)=0.3V, VCC=15V, RE=200. Design the following
circuit to obtain an output voltage of Vo=15V when the input Vi < 3V, and Vo=3V when Vi
> 11V. The BJT should operate in forward active mode for Vi between 3V and 11V. All
values given are dc voltage levels. If the above specification is not achievable, then
choose a design with the smallest possible Vi error range.
Use computer simulation software (e.g. Multisim or equivalent) to verify your circuit by
plotting the Vo-Vi graph over Vi=[0, 15V]. Choose a practical transistor closest to the
parameters given here (refer to the transistor datasheet online.)

Your report should contain the following sections:

(A) Introduction
A brief description of BJT and its applications, limited to one page (font 12 single line
spacing) including any diagram(s).
(B) Design
Show clearly and logically all necessary steps, reasoning and calculations to arrive at
your circuit design. State the values of RC, R1 and R2 of your design.
(C) Simulation
Attach a print-out of the simulation circuit, together with the Vo-Vi graph.
(D) Conclusion
One brief paragraph of the knowledge that you have learned from doing this exercise.
