EDITORIAL - Based on the survey we carried out last year when the 2010 renewals were sent out I have decided upon a new structure
for the 2011 Subscription renewals (the forms will be sent out with the September issue): the result of the survey showed around 65%
were in favour of moving to a new internet based magazine (ie it would look just like the currennt MAR but would be downlaodable
as a PDF), the remaining third of the membership were split 2/3 to keep a paper magazine at a higher subscription rate and 1/3 to keep
the paper magazine but would not pay any higher subscription.
To deal with this last 10% first, well we have not increased the subscription rate for 5 years and costs have gone up year by year - both
printing costs and postage rates - and we would need to increase the rate by 5 just to cover these increases - so, the chance of no
increase is a non starter and if we remained as we are the new rate would have to rise by 5 for all categories.
The 20+% who wanted to stay with a paper magazine but were willing to pay a higher subscription - please read on!
Moving on to the majority who would be happy to move to an internet based magazine, if we assume that most of those who said they
would change over do so then the production costs for the smaller number of paper magazines would increase by about 50p per copy.
To cover this increase we will have to increase the paper magazne price by 10 for 2011 - ie 5 we would have had to increase it
anyway plus a further 5 to cover the increased unit cost resulting from a smaller printing run!
Having stated the basic position for next year please go to inside the rear cover (page 487) to see in detail what you will pay and what
you will get in the way of reading each month.

BRITISH REVIEW
This months section includes several UK show reports, including Farnborough and Fairford. In my view Farnborough must take top
spot for quality with so many interesting exhibits, while Fairford still holds the top spot for quantity and quality of flying displays. As
usual without your reports neither event would have received the level of coverage provided in MAR, so many thanks to all those who
contributed.
Most of you will have read reports or heard rumours regarding the cuts that the Strategic Defence and Security Review will be working
on this autumn. With the expected reduction in budget for the MoD, the level of cuts will have to be very deep which for our hobby will
mean less aircraft to be seen at less airfields. One Squadron which is standing down prior to the review is LXX (70) Sqn which is
standing down on the C-130K at Lyneham on 8th September.
One for the future, the aviation press have reported the unveiling of the BAE Taranis unmanned combat air vehicle (serial quoted as
ZZ250) on 12.7 at the Electronic Warfare Test Facility at Warton. The first flight of the Tarandis is not expected until 2011 when it
has completed its initial ground trials. As yet this craft has not been seen outside at Warton.
JHCFS ALDERGROVE - following the request in last months MAR regarding the situation of 1 Flt, confirmation has been received
that when 651 Sqn moved from Odiham to Aldergrove in 2008 1 Flt became integrated into 651 Sqn. Staying with 651 Sqn, they have
received a further Defender AL.2 ZH003 ex G-CEIR which had its civil registration cancelled on 10.6. It was noted operating from
Waddington during early August.
MoD BOSCOMBE DOWN - noted making a fuel stop on 29.7 was GN MFG5 Sea King Mk 41 89+54.

UNITED STATES FORCES
NEWS
At the end of July 2010 the USAF announced proposals for the future disposition of some of its new platforms and the effects
this might have on other equipment already in service. Firstly the C-27J - training candidates are: Key Field Air Guard Station,
Mississippi and Mansfield Lahm Regional Airport, Ohio. Operational candidates are Boise Air Terminal Air Guard Station, Idaho and
Great Falls International Airport, Montana. The Air Force will conduct site surveys at the candidate locations and initiate the envi-
ronmental impact analysis process in preparation for a final selection.
Further progress has been made on the first bases for the F-35. Beale Air Force Base, California is the preferred location for both
operations and training with Hill AFB, Utah and Burlington Air Guard Station Vermont being the alternatives for operations and Luke
AFB, Arizona for the training mission. If these plans are approved , these bases will house the first 250 300 Air Force Lightning IIs.
Beale is also the preferred alternative for basing the USAFs fleet of MC-12Ws. This will have a number of benefits, not least of
which will be the creation of a cadre of MC-12W pilots. At the moment pilots are taken from other USAF units, sent to Meridian,
Mississippi for a months intensive course with the Mississippi ANG and then dispatched to Afghanistan for six months of operations
with one of the three expeditionary squadrons there. At the end of that seven month period they return to the unit they were detached
from; there is no MC-12 community as such and as a result there is no team of experienced pilots and time and money is wasted.
Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico is set to lose its F-22As. The basing plans at the end of July suggest that one squadron of
Raptors will be disbanded with its jets going to other bases and the other 49 FW squadron moving from Holloman to Tyndall Air Force
Base, Florida. The disbanded squadron will be dispersed in the following manner: Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaskawill receive six
additional aircraft, Langley Air Force Base, Virginia will receive six whilst Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada will receive two. Presumably
this is a by product of having too few of the type. Interestingly at roughly the same time Lockheed Martin announced that it will be
retaining and storing the Raptor production line in case there is a future requirement for the type. The line will close in 2012 with the
production of the 193rd jet but the company will retain the ability to upgrade the existing fleet or even manufacture completely new
airframes. Also at the end of July the Air Force chiefs announced that they consider Holloman to be most suitable for F-16 training,
which will of course be running down fairly rapidly for the Air Force now. The Air Force brass determined that Holloman has the
capacity to accept two F-16 training squadrons and offers the ability to synergize training activities with MQ-1/9 training occurring at
the same base. It wont surprise our readers that none of this is set in stone.
AIRCRAFT NEWS
Boeing celebrated the completion of the 100th CH-47F on July 22, 2010. The aircraft will be delivered to the US Army in August
and will be assigned to the seventh unit to be stood up on the type. The 100 helicopters will have been fielded in less than four years.

Extended Range/Multi-Purpose (ER/MP) programme which calls for 34 airframes and 16 ground control systems.
At the Farnborough International Air Show Hawker Beechcraft Corporation announced that it had received an order from the USMC
to convert two if its 2008 order for eight UC-12Ws with new extended range fuel tanks giving the aircraft 40% more useable fuel and
extending its range to 2,500 nautical miles. The first aircraft in the new order was reportedly rolled out at Wichita on May 18, 2010
and the serials are believed to be 168204 09.
On July 19, 2010 L-3 communications announced that the funds for the next eight C-27A JCAs had been allocated under Fiscal Year
2010. That brings to 21 the number for which funds have been allocated.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress July 7, 2010 of a possible Foreign Military Sale to Australia of
24 MH-60R Multi-Mission Helicopters and associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support for an estimated cost of $2.1

Following Iraqs order for 18 F-16C Block 52s the US has announced a joint programme to train ten Iraqi pilots for the type, presumably
in the USA.
Boeing F-15E1, 86-0183, the Silent Eagle demonstrator made its first flight from Lambert Field, St Louis, Missouri on July 8, 2010.
Later in the month it flew to Point Mugu NAS, California where it launched an inert AIM-120 AMRAAM from its conformal weapons
bay.

for the KC-X.
The third and final C-130 AMP test aircraft was flown from Kelly Field, San Antonio, Texas to Little Rock AFB, Arkansas on June
30, 2010. All three aircraft will undergo Periodic Depot Maintenance before entering the training schedule at Little Rock.
The 30th MC-12W Liberty was deployed to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility at the end of June 2010, completing the
initial deployment plan.
In late July 2010 President Obama sanctioned the delivery of two AH-1W helicopters to Turkey for use in the continuing fight against
the PKK. The machines are urgently needed and will be delivered before 2011.
At the moment 213 will be the number of C-17As bought for the USAF. Funds have been allocated for 15 new jets in FY 09 and eight
in FY 10. The USAF hasnt planned for these and says it doesnt want them and is now trying to work out what to do with them.
The third Boeing P-8A MPA made its first flight on July 29, 2010.
An earlier version of the Boeing 737 will see the end of a long career on September 17, 2010 when the 562 TFTS at Randolph AFB,
Texas will have a series of events to commemorate the retirement of the T-43A.
On July 29, 2010 during a ceremony at NAS Norfolk, Virginia, the USN accepted its first Grumman E-2D. The first unit to operate
the new machine will be VAW-120, the Fleet Replacement Squadron for the type.
On the same day at Lockheeds plant at Marietta the first HC-130J for the USAF took to the skies for the first time. Two HC-130Js
are currently on order from a stated requirement for 18 and the first one should be in service in 2012.
In an effort to further export the F-16, Lockheed has for the first time developed and marketed a system which enables the Viper to be
refuelled in mid-air using the hose and drogue system. Hose and drogue refuelling is mandatory for Indias Medium Multi-Role Combat
Aircraft contest, so Lockheed Martin, Cobham and HAL have teamed up to develop the Conformal Air Refuelling Tanker/System
(CARTS), which adds a probe in the forward end of the right-hand over-wing conformal tank. With this system deployed the F-16 will
be able to be refuelled using either boom or hose and drogue methods, in the same flight if necessary.
UNIT NEWS
When the Hawaii ANG at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam operates its new F-22As they will be flown by the 199 FS and the
active-duty Air Forces 19 FS which will be reactivated to operate the new jet. This is termed a reverse association where the ANG
unit is the lead unit in the association with active-duty pilots flying ANG owned jets. Whist the Hawaii Guard transitions from the F-15
to the F-22A the Montana ANG will provide cover from Hickam with six F-15Cs. The deployment, the first performed by the Montana
ANG since transitioning itself from the F-16C to the F-15C will commence on August 6, 2010.
The 388th Fighter Wings 34th Fighter Squadron Rams was inactivated at its Hill AFB home on July 16, 2010 as a result of the

A new squadron stood up at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana on July 4, 2010. The 343rd Bomb Squadron will be an associate unit of the
917th Bomb Wing. Its crews will fly 2 BW aircraft.
The Marine Corps has announced their basing plans for its fleet of F-35Bs which will replace its AV-8Bs, EA-6Bs and F/A-18Cs. The
plans call for 22 operational squadrons spread among MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina., and Cherry Point, North Carolina, on the East
Coast, and Miramar, California and Yuma, Arizona on the West Coast. Seven of those 22 squadrons will have 16 aircraft, and the rest
will have ten, although where they will be assigned has not yet been determined. The East Coast also will have a pilot training centre,
and the West Coast will have an operational training and evaluation squadron. The first operational squadron is planned for Yuma in
2012. The first Marine F-35Bs will be delivered to the joint services training base at Eglin AFB, Florida later this year.

of the four were helpfully given in the Blog of a chap serving there, 09-72101, 102, 103 and 104. The same Blog mentioned the last
threes of the UH-1s they are replacing as 240, 382 and 447. Number 447 is 74-22447 and I suspect that the other two are 74-22382 and
probably 71-20240.

(69) Lyon/Corbas A visit on 6.7.10 found the following with the Espaces Aro Lyon-Corbas in the old ALAT hangars on the west

arrivals, including the Aliz which arrived sometime after the airshow at Hyeres in mid June.

(61) Saint Aubin dAppenai (6.10) A visit here found the inhabitants of the collection unchanged from that listed in the March issue.
(66) Sainte Locadie (7.10) Alouette II 2104/CVM is still displayed at the entrance to the Centre de Vol en Montagne. There was
no sign of GIA SA.341Fs 1282/BGO and 1311/BDA, although they may have been moved across to the inaccessible aeroclub hangars
for the duration of the Open Day.
(31) Toulouse (7.10) Mirage IIIA 02 has re-appeared at the Ecole Nationale Superieure de lAeronautique et de lEspace (ENSAE)
and is now pole-mounted. MiG-15 3814 is also still present.
The silver fuselage of a Mirage F1 marked F1-00 had gone from the Ecole Nationale Superieur dIngeneurs Construction Aerospatiale
(ENSICA).
(31) Toulouse/Balma (7.10) Mirage IIIF2 01 and Super Etendard 01 are both still preserved at the Centre dEssais Aeronautique de
Toulouse (CEAT). On the large grass area next to the Super Etendard were the booms, wings and propellers of Noratlas 208 from
Francazal. Presumably this is in the process of being re-erected here. Within the site and visible from the visitors car park, through the
first gate but before the security gate, were several fuselages. There was an Alpha Jet, a Mirage IV, a blue/grey fuselage marked Marine
with an Aeronavale roundel, plus several other unidentified fuselages and parts.
(31) Toulouse/Blagnac (7.10) The fuselages of a C-130 and C-160F (F47) are still at the adjacent Usine St Louis (Airbus Technical
school). They are much easier to see now that a tram route and cycle path have been built running past them. The Hercules has never
been positively identified, but it is very likely that is is C-130A 55-0018 (ex Francazal).
(31) Toulouse/Francazal (7.10) With the running down of the base little remains visible here. Noratlas 208 is obviously going to
Balma (see above). Noratlas 115/63-VA is still preserved in immaculate condition at the barracks of the 1er Regiment de Train.

Hemet Ryan Airport CA Correcting a long-standing error in USAMOOS, the Huey mounted on a tower at the CAL FIRE facil-
ity cannot be (70-15765)/N490DF, as this is still active. Presumably it is actually UH-1F (66-1215)/N490DF, but confirmation would
be welcome.

aboard the USS Yorktown in Charleston SC.

2011 SUBSCRIPTIONS
(Continued from Page 426)
Having set out the broad outlines for the 2011 subscriptions on Page 426, here they are in more detail (please do not try to join for
2011 yet, the Subcsription Forms will be in the September issue of MAR) -
MAR 2011 PDF This is the internet based downloadable PDF version, available a week earlier than the paper MAR.
Price for this for 2011 is 20 (wherever you are located in the world)
Obviously you must have an email address and internet access
In addition to the magazine there will be an additional photo supplement each month which is free.
MAR PDF discontinued This is the old PDF version which was available as an add onto the paper MAR for an extra 5.
This option will be discontinued in 2011 - replaved by the MAR 2011 PDF at 20 or free wuth the
standard paper version of MAR.
@MAR 2011 This free standing magazine (totally different content and illustrations to the standard MAR) is only
available via the internet and you must have an email address.
This remains at 10 for 2011 (regardless of location ) and can only be purchased if you are a MAR
subscriber.
As you can see from the above, we are going to continue to offer both a paper and an internet based MAR for the forseeable future
in order to keep everyone happy. This is not the ideal solution, but the only practicable one as so many of our members want to keep
getting a paper version of MAR. The good news for the greater number of members is that they will get their internet based version
earlier than the paper one, the magazine is searchable if you are looking for a specific serial, call sign, etc and, most important of all,
it will save you a lot of money as it will be at least 50% cheaper than the paper version in 2011. Plus you will get a free monthly photo
supplement as well. One other comment made by quite a few members is that it will save storage space!
To those who continue with the paper version, I apolgise for the price increase (although half of the increase would have been
inevitable following 5 years without an change in the subscription rate while our costs have risen significantly each year during that
time. However, we are offering the PDF version free with the new price if you wish to take up this option!
