Foster - Lesson Plan #2
Lesson Teacher: Shannon D. Foster Date: September 18, 2017

Preparing for Lesson Development

1. What does your pre-assessment observation indicate about your students needs, and
current performance and educational needs? Although grade 3 students begin to
understand more complex words when reading, they struggle to recall complex words
when writing their own compositions. Their command of vocabulary can range from
knowing only the very basic word sets to more advanced vocabulary. Grade 3 students
need the skills and strategies to search out and find higher-level vocabulary that reflects
their growing educational development.

2. How will you design the lesson to meet the needs of all learners in your classroom?
The class will use the picture book The Right Word: Roget and His Thesaurus by Jen
Bryant to discuss third grade level phonics and word recognition. We will begin with
reading the story for fun. Students will then participate in whole class, individual and
small group activities. Next students will work in small cooperative learning groups to
complete a research activity. Finally, students will write an individual reflection on
similarities they find in other languages and why they think that way.

How can this help you learn new
words?
Did any of the words from the other
languages look like English? Which
ones?
Why do you think that is so?
Can you identify possible prefixes,
roots, or suffixes in the other
languages?
Even though these are four different
languages, why do you think words
look the same sometimes?
Evidence of Lesson Effectiveness/Student Learning:
Students will create one class list and three individual lists:
Synonyms list (poster board)
Sorted Words list with colored pencil indicators
Related Words list
Word Language Chart
Students will write a short reflection paragraph on their list making experience.

Reflection and Recommendations for the Next Time: This lesson could be expanded in so
many ways.
Students could create their own lists of things that interest them.
Students could alphabetize their lists into their own thesaurus.
Class lists could be combined to make a classroom copy of language words
Students could draw illustration and put the four words on the picture, like a multi-
language picture dictionary.
More time may be needed to complete all of the tasks.
The teacher may need to show more examples on how begin the lists, especially for lower
achieving students.
