Pomerode: The Most German Town In Brazil

To the north of Blumenau, Brazil, lies the town of Pomerode, so named because its

founders came from Pomerania, on the southern shore of the Baltic Sea, between Germany

and Poland. There, every cottage and building is built in the traditional rural German style of

the 1900s.

Pomerode isnt the only German town in Brazil. By the end of the 19th century,

13.3% of the population in Rio Grande do Sul was of German descent, and that figure rose to

21.6% in 1950.

Over the years the government has become tolerant of Brazilian Germans, embracing

their culture. Today, German is taught in local schools.
