The Hanging Houses of Cuenca

In the CastileLa Mancha region of central Spain, the Jcar river has carved a deep

gorge as it flows. Along its length, there is a medieval city of particular note; Cuenca, built

on the steep sides of a mountain.

Many of its houses, called "hanging houses", are built right up to the cliff edge,

making Cuenca one of the most striking towns in Spain.

In the past, houses of this kind were frequent along the eastern border of the city.

Over the centuries they have served many different purposes, private homes, council houses...

One of them is now a restaurant, and another an art museum.
