to declutter
his life

Hall on a weekend afternoon,
Benjamin Davis answers a ques-
tion the same one that hes faced
countless times: Why do you do it?
Davis, known by close friends as
Benji and by strangers as The Yellow
Guy or a synonymous identifier,
handles these encounters regularly.
A self-described intellectual with
an affection for mathematics and
efficiency, Davis is by most standards
a normal college student just not
when it comes to his sense of fashion.
Its my favorite color. It wakes me
up in the morning, he said. It makes
me feel energetic. It really just gives
me something to look forward to.
Davis said he associates the color
with happiness and started wear-
ing yellow shirts as a senior in high
school. This summer, as Davis pre-
pared to enter his first year at UNC,
he decided to fully commit, combin-
ing his obsessive passion for the
color with his fixation on individual-
ism and productivity.
Since his first day on campus,
Davis has sported suede-yellow
Vans, tall yellow socks, soft-neon
shorts, a faded yellow belt and a
solid colored t-shirt or polo. On

like building an image in Photoshop.
It isnt the most glorious task, and
it certainly doesnt happen in a single
stroke of a brush. But every interaction
with a player that may very well be the
face of your schools program one day
and every conversation with people
who know him well adds to the can-
didates portrait. Pixel by pixel.
We talked to pretty much every-
body, anybody that we could run
into, North Carolina quarterbacks
Pride Place provides community and home for LGBTQ+ students

Before Pride Place, junior
Brennan Lewis was unsure if they
would have a normal first-year
experience in their dorm room. As a
non-binary student, they wondered
if their physical safety and mental
health would be in jeopardy.
With other LGBTQ+ students,
allies and the support of the
Universitys administration, they
decided to create a safe space for
LGBTQ+ students to live and study.
Pride Place, now in its second
year, is a residential learning pro-
gram in Cobb Hall dedicated to
forging relationships within the
LGBTQ+ community.

Heckendorf, who spearheaded
the redshirt first-years recruitment,
talks to school administrators, teach-
ers and janitors on his visits. And
Surratts case was no different.
I remember talking to a security
guard one night at a football game,
Heckendorf said. The leadership
that (Surratt) had within his team,
within his school ... everybody within
the school had nothing but great
things to say about him.
By the end of Surratts high school
career, hed been named North
Carolinas Gatorade State Player of
the Year in football. He won state
titles in 2012 and 2014 and broke

had to be assigned a specific housing
placement based on their individual
needs.
Pride Place residential adviser
Cameron West received the same
training as other RAs, but he is also
responsible for creating a curriculum
for bimonthly meetings. At meetings,
residents discuss TED Talks, labels
and other topics.
Pride Place stresses community
immersion with monthly meal and
movie nights, allowing non-LGBTQ+
members of Cobb Hall to participate
every other month.
It gives me great satisfaction to
know that every member has some-
thing in common, West said. They
have something they can relate on, to
a certain extent, which allows them
to connect with one another.

The Hillsborough Board
of Commissioners voted
for energy efficiency.

The Hillsborough Board of
Commissioners voted to become
the first town in North Carolina
to commit to 100 percent clean
energy by 2050.
This gradual transition will
work toward powering the city
with different types of clean
energy like wind and solar.
After considering Hillsboroughs
limited capabilities as a small
town, the board plans to create
a task force of citizens, many
of whom have backgrounds in
energy efficiency, to help plan
the path for the town.
Hillsborough Commissioner
Jenn Weaver said complete
energy efficiency is not an easy
task, and it will take community
engagement to meet their goal.
She said this dedication to coun-
ter climate change will hopefully
push other towns to follow in
Hillsboroughs footsteps.
It feels like we are in a very
urgent time where we are expe-
riencing ill effects of climate
change and feels very important
for local governments to act,
she said.
The unanimous vote by
the board for this resolution
emphasizes their commitment
to make Hillsborough a pro-
gressive and energy efficient
town. The first step will be
deciding what kinds of energy
the town will use while stay-
ing in a budget. As the cost of
renewable energy decreases,
this commitment becomes more
feasible for smaller towns.
Clean energy also brings
the prospect of new jobs to
Hillsborough, as thousands
of young students from the
Triangle graduate.
Hillsboroughs dedication
to clean energy comes just
one week after Orange County
affirms the same pledge. With
the same goal in mind, the area
hopes to draw in those seeking
to make a change in energy effi-
ciency.
Mayor Pro Tem Kathleen
Ferguson said the resolution
was spearheaded by residents
that have suggested the resolu-
tion since the beginning of the
summer, when the Paris agree-
ment unfolded. Feedback has
shown that the resolution is
well supported by the towns-
people.
Sustainability is critical
for long term quality of life,
Ferguson said.
Innovation and creativity
continue to push the agenda
for the Hillsborough Board of
Commissioners. When they
reconvene to discuss the reso-
lution further in October, the
board hopes to establish a basic
outline for future energy plans.
Hillsborough hopes to be
the guiding example and to
show that energy efficiency is
feasible for other towns across
the state, Ferguson said, and
the townspeoples dedication
to a clean and healthy environ-
ment represent their investment
in the continuing progress of
Hillsborough.

Ellis Dyson & the Shambles
released their second full-
length album, Henhouse.
The album features 10
tracks, including the albums
namesake Circlin the
Henhouse.
For two years we were
writing songs, practicing
them, playing them live,
tweaking them almost daily,
front man Ellis Dyson said.
So what you hear on the
album is the product of that
process.
The band celebrated the
release of their album on
Sept. 2 at the album release
party at Cats Cradle in
Carrboro.
There was no short-
age of excitement with five
bands and a circus group
from Raleigh all perform-
ing. Dyson said that the
band hired Raleigh-based
circus troupe, Imagine
Circus, along with Durham-
based brass band called the
Bulltown Strutters for the
performance.

Top universities see little UNC offers resources to

growth in diversity help LGBTQ+ athletes
Across the nation, top
schools saw little change in
diversity since 1980.

Minority representation in the
nations top universities has declined
in the last 35 years despite affirmative
action, according to a New York Times
analysis.
The analysis, published on Aug.
24, looked at the fall enrollment data
spanning from 1980 to 2015 at 100 of
the nations top schools. Those schools
ranged from Ivy Leagues to public
flagship universities including UNC.
The data showed minorities are
more underrepresented at elite schools
than they were in 1980. Graphs for
the 100 institutions that were studied
mostly showed trends of either decline
or stagnation in the percentage of col-
lege-aged minority students entering
as first-years, even though minority
students now make up a larger major-
ity of college-aged demographics.
Despite making up 15 percent of
college-aged Americans, the analysts
found that black students were par-
ticularly underrepresented. According
to the NYT analysis, black students
consisted of just 6 percent of incoming
freshmen at top schools in 2015. This
percentage was almost unchanged
from that of 1980.
Similarly, the analysis found the gap
between college-aged Hispanic students
and Hispanic students at top universi-
ties had widened since 1980. In 2015,
Hispanic 18-year-olds made up 22
percent of college-aged Americans but
made up only 13 percent of the years
incoming first-year at elite schools.
Erika Wilson, a UNC law profes-
sor, said she was not surprised by the
trend, citing issues in educational sys-
tems that minority students face long
before college.
Weve seen efforts at racial integra-
tion and desegregation sort of disinte-
grate in many ways, Wilson said.
The reports analysis of UNCs
incoming first-year classes from 1980
to 2015 exhibited a decline in black
incoming first-years, from 11 percent
in 1980 to 8 percent in 2015. This rose
to 11 percent with the incoming first-
year class of fall 2016, according to
UNC Admissions class profile.
The percentage of Hispanic first-
years at UNC raised from zero percent
in 1980 to 8 percent in 2015, according
to the NYT analysis. In fall 2016, UNC
had the second highest percentage of
African-American students among the
top 25 national public universities and
had the highest percentage of American
Indian students, according to the UNC
Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
According to data from UNC
Admissions, the current first-year class
has a higher percentage of enrolling
students who identify as other than
white than in 2007 or 1997.
Wilson said she is a proud benefi-
ciary of affirmative action herself, and
that affirmative action has been effec-
tive in increasing access and oppor-
tunities for disadvantaged students
who otherwise might be looked over to
attend certain schools.
I think while affirmative action
has been effective in providing access,
theres still work to do, said Wilson.
Steve Farmer, vice provost for enroll-
ment and undergraduate admissions,
said that these declining trends at uni-
versities can be improved by encourag-
ing students early-on in education to
start looking at college.
Its important to strengthen the
advising that students receive as
theyre deciding whether to attend col-
lege and where to go, Farmer said.
Farmer said UNC Admissions has
been trying to help address the trend
for 10 years now through the Carolina
College Advising Corps, which helps
high school students in under-served
areas search for, enroll in and succeed
at colleges and universities.
This year the Carolina Corps will
be serving roughly 15,000 high school
seniors across our state, Farmer said.
The vast majority of these students will
identify as low-income, first-generation
college, underrepresented minority or
some combination of the three.

of 100 on LGBTQ+
inclusion in athletics.

In the world of sports, physi-
cal talent is often the only thing
fans see from the stands. For
Stephen Bickford, a former
UNC mens soccer player who
was a first-year in 2005, a secret
loomed over that talent in a way
he felt no one could understand.
There was definitely always
pressure feeling like I couldnt
be part of the team for some-
thing no one knew, Bickford
said. When you go into an exam
and something is affecting your
mindset, you dont do as well as
you could.
Bickford, a forward for
UNC mens soccer, concealed
his homosexuality from the
public until five years after he
transferred from the University.
Many college athletes in the
LGBTQ+ community can relate
to his story where fear of
being shunned for who you
truly are keeps you from fully
embracing a passion.
Athlete Ally, an organiza-
tion dedicated to ending anti-
LGBTQ+ sentiment in athletics,
recently released the Athletic
Equality Index, a comprehensive
report that assesses LGBTQ+
inclusion policies and practices
for every athletic program in the
NCAAs Power Five conferences.
The AEI is the first report of its
kind to provide fact-based data
on the progress made by each
major NCAA program in this
effort. Liam Miranda, research
and program manager at Athlete
Ally, sees it as a major step for
improvement in the future.
We designed it because
we really wanted to make a
resource that schools can use to
better their institutional com-
mitments to LGBTQ+ inclusion
in the athletic space, Miranda
said. We not only wanted to
highlight the great work schools
are doing, but also to bring
transparency to where theyre at
on a list of policies and practices
and give them a road map for
future work to be done as well.
Each program included in the
study received a score based off
factors like nondiscrimination
policies, inclusive fan codes of
conduct, accessible resources
on campus and the presence of
LGBTQ+ student-athlete groups.
Athlete Ally also analyzed news
reports, social media and more
to assess how effectively each
program enforces these factors.
UNC received a score of 80 out
of a maximum score of 100 on the
AEI. The University gained points
in the Pro-LGBTQ+ Inclusion
Statement/Campaign category
after its part last year in pushing
for the removal of all ACC cham-
pionships from Charlotte over
House Bill 2.
The Universitys score reflects
a definite effort to lead the push
for change, but Cricket Lane,
assistant athletic director for stu-
dent-athlete development, feels
there is room for improvement.
Lane cited a recent partnership
between the Universitys ath-
letic department and the LGBT
SportSafe Inclusion Program
as something that will greatly
improve inclusion on campus.
SportSafe recognized UNC
last year as meeting their
required standard for excellence
in inclusion policies and practice.
They will provide the Universitys
athletic department with work-
shops and policy advice on the
issue and effects of discrimina-
tion to athletes and staff.
Along with this, Lane ref-
erenced the Gender Spectrum
program as a testament to
the Universitys commitment.
Spectrum is a program for stu-
dent-athletes at the University
with an interest in social justice
to promote inclusion and diver-
sity of all kinds, including the
LGBTQ+ community, to their
fellow athletes and students.
Many schools across the nation
gave encouraging responses to
Athlete Ally about their AEI
scores, indicating a similar com-
mitment to improving inclusion
policies as the University has
undertaken. Bickford looks at this
response as an encouraging shift
from what he saw as a closeted
athlete a decade ago.
I wish Id had someone to
talk to back when I was a player
because things could have gone
a lot differently. Its great to hear
that the school is providing edu-
cation and resources, and I hope
it means that other students fac-
ing the same struggle that I did
can feel accepted and not want
to hide whats really going on
with them, Bickford said.

The Carmichael mak-
erspace will open Oct. 4.
When it opens, it will serve
as a entrepreneurial space
and new business incuba-
tor. Students using the
space can brainstorm new
ideas and then bring those
ideas to life.
The makerspace is
part of the new Blue Sky
Innovation Community,
the newest Residential
Learning Program that
UNC Housing offers.
Blue Sky Innovation
Community was designed
by Kenan-Flagler Business
School.
Students involved in
the program will live in
Carmichael, have classes
and workshops held in the
Leasing for Fall 2018

space, and outside speak-
ers coming in to talk about
how to pursue new busi-
ness ventures.
The Blue Sky Innovation
Community currently
houses 21 students in
Carmichael, but is hoping
to grow. Students are wel-
come to join and partake in
the experience of the mak-
erspace whether they live
in the community.
The new space will be
the conjoining of entrepre-
neurship and applied sci-
ence, said Richard Bradley,
associate director of
Carolina Housing. Students
can take an idea cultivated
on the entrepreneurial
side over to the maker
side to build a prototype of
their ideation.

The concept for the space
started more than a year
ago when Bradley met with
Ted Zoller, director of the
Center for Entrepreneurial
Studies.

Author examines disparities in tenure
Patricia Matthew, associ-
ate professor of English at
Montclair State University and
author of the recently published
book Written/Unwritten, vis-
ited Chapel Hill on Tuesday to
host a lecture on Diversity in
the Public Arena.

start studying discrimination
in the academic community?
What made you want to pub-
lish a book on this subject?
Patricia Matthew: I was con-
cerned about the story I heard
about four women of color at
the University of Michigan,
who had all been denied tenure
from the same joint depart-
ment. It was weird, because
there were five people who
went up, four women of color
and one white man, all people
of color (who) were denied
tenure by their department
I thought, Thats really odd,
thats odd, you know four at
the same time. And as a result

Last night a group of UNC
students, bound by nothing
except a common school and
a passion for the rights of
undocumented Americans,
held a panel to discuss the
consequences of the Trump
administrations decision
to end Deferred Action for
Childhood Arrivals.

Michigan had a history and a
pattern of denying people of
color tenure, so I wanted to
know if other people were hav-
ing the same problem across
the country. There were books
out there that talked about it.
But I was less interested in tell
me your story of discrimina-
tion and more interested in
what was your experience
like And I wanted to hear
from different people around
the country. I didnt want it to
just be the Northeast, or the
South or the West; I wanted
to hear from as many kinds of
academics and different kinds
of institutions and different
walks of life as possible.
DTH: What issues did you
notice that you thought mer-
ited the most focus, out of
everything you came across?
PM: I was really shocked that
womens studies had denied
a woman of color tenure. I
think theres this narrative that
womens studies, you know, is
women, and theyre fighting the
patriarchy and that doesnt
mean they dont have standards,
but the woman they denied

elists about what the policy
change might mean for the

Students arranged the
grassroots-style event to
ease the stress felt by their
peers and UNC workers who
may face blowback from the

One critical goal for the
organizers of the panel is to
establish safe spaces for stu-
dents that feel uncomfortable
or in danger, or need someone
to talk to.

thesis. And so my question was,
if women studies, (which has) in
theory been this more progres-
sive radical space that was sup-
posed to dismantle hierarchies,
was a problem, then, you know,
that was a pretty big problem
I thought, Well, if its happening
in this progressive, supposedly
left-leaning corner of the acad-
emy, then theres a much bigger
problem than I had realized.
DTH: What connections, if any,
do you observe between racial
tensions in the academic com-
munity and racial relations on
a national level?
PM: I dont see (racial violence)
so much as a kind of general
apathy. You can contribute
to an environment thats not
inclusive by bullying faculty of
color (and) being dismissive of
them in all sorts of ways. But
you can also contribute to the
problem by just thinking its
not your problem.
Like thinking, Oh, isnt it
unfortunate that the students
of UVA had Nazis and white
supremacists, now let me go
back to my corner and not
think of it as my responsibil-
ity I know that there are
the micro-aggressions that
from Chancellor Carol Folt
addressing DACA, which
said, We will be working
closely with UNC General
Administration and others to
more fully understand yester-
days announcement by the
president and will keep you
updated.
We were hoping that you
can update us right now,
Sostaita said.
Strauss assured the audi-
ence that the University stood
with its workers and students.
It was a statement of soli-
darity and thought, he said.
The elimination of the
DACA program will force
the more than 27,000 North
Carolinians who benefit from
it to explore other options.
Two of the panelists, Raul
Pinto and Yesenia Polanco-
Galdamez, are immigration
attorneys. They talked to the
audience about ways undocu-
mented Americans and their
families can reduce their risk
of deportation.

Emilio Vicente and senior
Rubi Quiroz, appealed to the
crowds emotions by offering
stories of the adversity they
faced growing up as undocu-
mented Americans. They
framed the issue as humani-
tarian rather than political.
We are human beings first
and foremost, Vicente said.
Quiroz tried to convey the
anxiety she and students in
her position cope with. As
someone who benefits from
DACA, she is especially ner-
vous about the road ahead.
Its almost like your expi-
ration date you wont be
able to move forward past
that, Quiroz said.
Pinto, one of the immigra-
tion attorneys, then jumped
into the conversation.
No one in this country who
has been working, who has
been going to school, who has
been paying taxes, should have
an expiration date, he said.

Its a poem that is really
sad and funny and scary all
at the same time, and thats
a real North Carolina poem,
Calvocoressi said. Its a
poem I could not have writ-
ten had I not lived rurally, by
a ravine.
Calvocoressi has been
working on the 96-page
work since 2009. Her choice
to work at UNC encour-
aged her to finish this book,
as Calvocoressi longed for
a return to a rural feeling
similar to her upbringing in
Connecticut.
This upbringing was far
from easy, as she recalled
having no friends, eating
lunch in the bathroom and
grappling with a mentally ill
mother who committed sui-

writing, although she did not
originally classify her work
as poetry. She believed that
realm of writing belonged to
her father, who is also a poet.
I write a lot about my
family, Calvocoressi said.
When my mom took her
life, I didnt have language
for that and there was a lot of
silence about mental illness in
my house, and so I was kind
of left to my own devices to
figure out how to make sense
of it. Gosh, there are so many
things that happen to us every
day but we cant figure out
how to say it.
Aside from focusing on
her own poetry, Calvocoressi
because of a desire to satisfy his
dedicated, habitual personal-
ity, under pressure from both
internal and external sources.

underscored our solidarity
with those who have been

tion. I regret that the article
implied that our statement
was hastily thrown together.
This misrepresents my feel-
ings about the situation and
our statement; I was trying
to convey the urgency of the
situation that my colleagues
and I care so deeply about.
The most important mes-
sage about the Universitys
response is that we are
dedicated to supporting
and assisting students and

How can you quantify one
persons actions relative to
their life as a whole and then
decide if that justifies removal
of their statue? I dont think
you can.
All conversations are worth
having, but there must be
some distinction, some clear
metric for this.
How can we reasonably
impose the morals and beliefs
of a 21st century America on
our forebears from a remark-
ably different time and place?
I do not write this column to
belittle the issue of racism, or
slavery especially. It strikes me
that delving into the intricacies
of this debate are necessary
and useful.
Broad generalizations
abound regarding the motives
behind removal, and a
nuanced defense is necessary
for the camp calling for Silent
Sam to come down.
