New Dock and Boat Launch
Soon To Be Installed

T he plans for the new
dock, to be placed
where the old dock and
boat ramp are, near the
Minnedosa Beach, are al-
most ready to be carried
out.
According to Town of
Minnedosa Public Works
Superintendent, Kevin
Marcino, once the con-
tractors are available, they
will put in the pads for
the dock, and will then
see what they can do to
work on the floating part
of it. Parish Backhoe Ser-
vices will be coming in to
do the excavating on site.
This will level the ground,
readying it for the pads to
be placed.

will work in the contrac-

Boissevain Recorder - A sudden burst of rain on Septem-
ber 19th drenches Boissevain. During the two hour rain
fall, around 70 to 76 mm (2 3/4 to 3 inches) of rain fell. The
intense runoff plugged storm drains, backing up water and
flooding streets, some places knee deep and higher.

ur governments strong fiscal plan for a responsi-
ble recovery for Manitoba is working, and is lead-
ing to significant progress in reducing the provinces
deficit.
Finance Minister Cameron Friesen announced
on September 19th that the summary deficit has been
reduced to $764 million, according to public accounts
for 2016-17. Thats $147 million lower than the deficit
that had been budgeted for the fiscal year.
Its a remarkable turnaround. If we had continued
on the path of the previous NDP government, Manito-
bas deficit would have climbed to $1.7 billion by 2019.
This improvement marks the first time in five years
that Manitobas deficit is lower than budgeted, and its
a result of discipline in managing expenditures and ef-
fective budget forecasting while meeting targets. How-
ever, Manitoba continues to suffer the consequences
of the NDPs fiscal failures. The costs of servicing the
provincial debt, which had doubled in eight years un-
der the previous government, remain a concern for
dent management and have since taken firm mea-
sures to ensure Manitobas financial sustainability.
We are slowing the growth in expenditures and
bringing them in line with revenues. While control-
ling annual spending growth to below three percent,
we have undertaken a value-for-money review and a
sustainable health-care review that are finding savings
and achieving better results for Manitobans.
Our government has also brought in the Fiscal Re-
sponsibility and Taxpayer Protection Act that ensures
sustainability with a commitment to smart financial
management. This new law requires real progress to-
ward balanced budgets through progressively smaller
deficits, and includes pay cuts for cabinet ministers
who fail to achieve deficit-reduction targets.
Our province requires fiscal stability to maintain
the services that Manitoba families rely on. We have
made great progress, despite the challenges, and are
on a path toward ensuring these services are sustain-
able into the future.

stop treasure seekers from flocking to
the Ukrainian Hall for the annual Flea
Market and Craft Sale, held in support
of the Minnedosa District Museum and
Heritage Village. Over a dozen vendors of-
fered shoppers a wide array of merchan-
ted handiwork and more. There was truly
something for everyone and something
for all ages.
Those in attendance could enjoy a
piece of homemade pie or homemade
borscht and sandwich lunch.
At the end of the day, over $1,200 was
realized for the Heritage Village.

That Cooper House Hosts Home Routes Show

p.m., which allowed guests
time to get refreshments and
get themselves seated, and
the show began at 8 p.m.

minutes each with a break of
about 20 minutes in between,

born musician who has lived
in Winnipeg for the last eight
or nine years. His style of
music is primarily Latin, but
as McLennan noted, we
think we know Latin music,
but most of it is from Span-
ish speaking countries, so the
Brazilian music has its own
very distinct history and col-
lection of styles.
The evening was very
informative, and gave the
crowd the opportunity to get
to know the musician and ask
any questions they may have
had. He explained to the at-

South American music, which
is typically on the upbeat.
The guitar is Castillos
weapon of choice, but he also
did a lot of sampling loops,
making his voice sound like
a beatbox, or playing a tam-
bourine. His guitar was also
used as a mini outport, simi-
lar to what a keyboard does,
to make it sound like other in-
struments are playing, like the
horns or a piano. He has been
playing with this method of
music since the 1990s.
At various points through-
out the evening, guests got up

This show was a part of
the six-show Home Routes
series. This is the second year
that the series has been held
in Minnedosa. There will be
two more before New Years,
and three after. Most of the
shows will be held at McLen-
nans home, but there will also
be one held at the 50+ Centre
and one at Inspire Studio. The
next show will be on October
22nd, and will feature a cou-
ple from New England, who
play a combination of Folk
Americana and Bluegrass.

Bethany Church Celebrates Its Centennial

St. Johns Memorial
Church in Bethany cele-
brated their churchs 100th
anniversary on September
17th.
To commemorate
the event, Bishop William
Cliff addressed the ser-
vice, which began at 2 p.m.
The service began with
Jan Burnside and Gladys
Broome leading the pro-
cession into the church,
followed by Bishop Cliff
and the churchs minister,
Don Thompson.
In addition to the regu-
lar attendees of the weekly
service at the church, there
were people from all over
Westman in attendance
that day. Visitors from Kel-
wood, Gladstone, Neepa-
wa and Minnedosa also
attended, as it is a 5-point
parish. In all, there was an
estimated 60 people who

Community Hall.
The church began as
a rectory, built in 1913,
and in 1917, a church was
built alongside it. The
trees on the property were
planted in 1913 as well, by
the Anglican Rector, Rev-
erend R.W. Ridgeway. The
church was named the St.
Johns Memorial Church in
memory of the men whose
lives were lost in WWI.
The church officially
opened on September
23rd, 1917 by Canon E.A.
Gill, and replaced St. An-
drews Westhope Church
and St. Johns Church,
which came down that
year, and were both later
deconsecrated. In 1943,
the church received a fresh
look, and was given a fresh
coat of paint and varnish.
It was in 2004 that the
church joined the Prairie
Mountain Parish of Neepa-
wa, Kelwood, Gladstone

and Minnedosa, becoming
the 5-Point Parish that it is
today.
Over the past centu-
ry, the church has hosted
many fall suppers in its
basement, and has seen
many baptisms, weddings
and funerals. It has helped
people through the happy

seen so many people walk
through its doors.

Evergreen Soil Farm Making A Difference

T he soil farm at Ever-
green Environmen-
tal Technologies, located
southeast of Minnedosa, is
an endeavor that is going
to do wonders for the com-
pany. It was introduced
some years ago, but is still
not as widely known as
some might wish it was.
Evergreen Environ-
mental Technologies has
been striving towards new,
ecofriendly ways of waste
management for some
time now, and the soil
farm is no exception.
The soil used comes
from various spills of haz-
ardous materials, usu-
ally hydrocarbon such as
gasoline or oil, and is then
brought to their property,
at a charge to the client,
where they will work with
it until it is clean. In order
to clean the soil, they flip
it, or toss the soil, allow-
ing the contaminated soil
to be exposed to the air, in
order to evaporate the con-
taminants.
Dave MacDonald,
who works at Evergreen
Environmental Technolo-
gies, said they need to
flip the soil about once a
month during the sum-
mer months. The process
usually takes about three
to five years, and samples
from the soil are sent to
a lab in Wininpeg, which
are then tested and sent
on to Manitoba Conserva-
tion, who will designate
it as clean or not. Once it
is deemed clean soil, it is
then used as a covering for
the waste cell at the Ever-
green site.
