Three Golden Rules for Playing QB

1. Never Throw Late Across the

Middle
2. Never Pass an Open Receiver in the
Progression
3. If we dont have a snap we dont
have a play
Stance
Feet Shoulder width apart or less
Toes pointed slightly out for comfort
Feet flat on ground, weight on balls of feet
Knees slightly flexed, head up, and back
straight
Under center far enough back to extend our
hands
Passing Game Footwork of QB
1 Step Drop Under
3 Step Drop Under
5 Step Drop Under
Catch and Throw Gun (Timing Route)
1 Step Gun (Maneuver Route)
3 Step Gun (Both)
Sprintout
PlayAction
QB in Run Game
1. QB must make sure the RB gets the
football.

2. QB must carry out his fake and not watch

the RB through the hole. From behind must look the
same.

3. QB must keep the backside DE honest in

the zone Read (MUST BE DRILLED).
Timing Routes and
Maneuver Routes
Timing Routes- Hitch, Speed Out
Ball must be thrown on time
Maneuver Routes- Curl, Post, Slant
Ball needs to be thrown when WR
maneuvers between defenders
How do you beat Zone
coverage?

By sitting in windows.
By sitting in open areas or voids in the
defensive coverage.
How do you beat Man
coverage?

With moves and speed.

By running Away from
your man, or using Rubs.
Spin Factors
Right Handed QB- Ball will spin to the right, if he
throws a slant to the right he must lead the WR
more
Left Handed QB- Ball will spin to the left, if he
throws a flat (arrow) route to the right he must
lead him more
Up (Fade route) better to side of QBs arm because
of spin factors
QBs Stance Arrow
(Instep)
Most Important Factor in QBs Accuracy
Tell the kids your Stance Arrow is where the
Nike Check is on the inside of your foot
QB must have his instep pointed to his
target
QB must transfer weight to his front foot
Easiest Passes in the
Game
Look (Smoke) Pass- CB playing soft coverage, just
catch and throw it to the WR. WR just turns
numbers (Big in the NFL and College)

Uncovered- teach this from 7on7 on, if they dont

cover all your WR just catch and throw it to him,
WR just turn your numbers to the QB
QB Drills- Youtube
Meadowbrook QB Drills
Knee Drills (Warm up)
Ball over head
Throwing Knee Twist
Opposite Knee Twist
Both Knee Twist
Feet in Concrete
Standing (Make it hard on yourself)
Weight Transfer Drill
Long Toss
Hashmark Drill
Only QB drill We do everyday (use timer)
One QB on one hash mark another on Opposite
hashmark
7 yds apart, 6 yds for hitch one yard for center
3 step drop- 1.3 seconds
5 step drop- 2.3 seconds
Sprint out- 1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3 throw
Horizontal Stretch Drill
Best Drill for throwing Horizontal Stretches
Hitch/Seam, Slant/Flat, Curl/Flat, Out/Out-Turn
4 underneath Defenders playing Zone (2 ILBs and 2
OLBs)
4 underneath Defenders against 5 eligible WRs
Tell the LBs what routes to take away
QB has to make his reads
Goal Post Drill
QBs on Goal Post uprights
One QB on Goal line on one upright
Other QB on opposite Upright 8 yds outside of the
end zone
3 step drop- ball needs to almost skim the goal post
Great Drill for throwing the Seam
Other QB drills
Routes on Air
1 on 1s (Routes versus press-man and off-man coverage)
Combination Drill- 2 WRs and 1 flat defender, QB throws combination
Routes- throwing off Flat Defender (All Hitch, Hitch/Seam, Slant/Flat,
Curl/Flat). Tell QB- Flat Defender cant cover both routes
Zone Read Drill- QB will be going on the Zone Read and either
Giving or Pulling the Football
Option Pitch Drill- QB will jog down with a partner and work on
pitching the football
Escape Drill (Work moving in pocket and evading the rush)
Scramble Drill with WRs
QB Progression Reads
Horizontal Stretch (Outside/In)
Horizontal Stretch (Inside/Out)
Vertical Stretch (Hi/Low)
Object Receiver Read (We are telling
you who to throw too)
Horizontal Stretch (Outside/In)

Example- All Hitch, Hitch/Seam, Out/Seam

4 verticals (deep horizontal stretch)
Play is stretching the defense horizontally (from
sideline to sideline)
QB reads from the outside WR to the inside WR
We also tell the QB he is throwing off of the flat
defender
Horizontal Stretch
(Inside/Out)
Example- Curl/Flat, Slant/Flat
Play is stretching the defense horizontally
(from sideline to sideline)
QB reads from the inside WR to the outside
WR (not where they are lined up, but where
they will be once they run the route)
We also tell the QB that he is throwing off
the flat defender
Vertical Stretch
(High/Low)
Example- Smash (Hitch/Corner), Post/Out, Flood
Routes
Play is stretching the defense vertically (from Deep,
to Intermediate, to Short)
QB reads from the deep WR to the short WR Smash
we tell the QB to throw off the Corner
Object Receiver Read
Example- Curl/Wheel, Hitch and Go, and
Pick Passes you run
We are calling this because we see
something from up top
We are calling Curl/Wheel because the
Corner is jumping the Curl
We also tell the QB on Curl/Wheel if CB
takes away the Wheel throw the Curl
What the QB MUST know on
each drop back pass:
A) Concerned with
1. Direction (which HALF of field on Horizontal
Stretch, or, THIRD of field on Vertical Stretch?).
2. Progression (2 or 3 receivers in that area).

B) Determining Direction:
1. Trigger- Read W/S on deep or out breaking
routes. Mike Backer on in breaking routes.
2. Stage is set? If so just follow progression!
Pre-Snap Coverage Reads
PRE-SNAP COVERAGE READS

A) Scan the formation for uncovered receivers.

B) Find the Weak Safety for PRE-SNAP read.

1. If the W/S is low check other coverage keys for Cover 0.

2. If the W/S is high check other coverage keys for Cover 1 or Cover 3
3. If there are 2 safeties and they are both low check other coverage keys
for Cover 0.
4. If there are 2 safeties and they are both high check other coverage keys
for Cover 2, Cover 2/Man, or Cover 4 (1/4s).
5. If there are 2 safeties and they are staggered check other coverage keys
for Cover 1/Robber or Cover 3/Robber.
No Show Secondary Coverages
NOTE: QB must be aware of the following actions from a well disguised
secondary in the dropback passing game:

A) If there is 1 safety and he rolls down hard after the snap HAVE A PLAN
VS. PRESSURE!

B) If there are 2 safeties and both roll down hard after the snap HAVE A
PLAN VS. PRESSURE!

C) If the W/S or 2 safeties maintain their alignment after the snap execute
your progression reads with an awareness of where the weaknesses are in the
coverage and which coverage defender we are attacking.
