Questions and Problems

1. In RUN 1, are the measured values of voltages the same as the rated values. If not, state the
reason why.
-
2. State Lenzs Law
-Lenz's law is a common way to understand how electromagnetic circuits obey Newton's
third law and the conservation of energy. Lenz's law is named after Heinrich Lenz, and it says: An
induced electromotive force (emf) always gives rise to a current whose magnetic field opposes
the change in orignal magentic flux.
3. Differentiate a step-up from a step-down transformer.
- A transformer that increases voltage from primary to secondary (more secondary winding
turns than primary winding turns) is called a step-up transformer. Conversely,
a transformer designed to do, while the opposite is called a step-down transformer.
4. In your own words, what is meant by transformer polarity?
-Polarity means the direction of the induced voltages in the primary and the secondary winding
of the transformer. If the two transformers are connected in parallel, then the polarity should be
known for the proper connection of the transformer. There are two types of polarity one is
Additive, and another is Subtractive.
5. Give as many applications as you can where transformer polarities have to be considered.
Distribute power at high voltage
Eliminate double wiring
Operate 120 volt equipment from power circuits
Isolate Electrical Circuits
Separately Establish Branch Circuits
Provide 3 wire secondary circuits
Buck Boost Connection
Provide Electrostatic Shielding for Transient Noise Protection
6. In RUN 3, explain the reason behind the voltages measured by the voltmeters.

7. Given 2 identical transformers with a rating of 220V/110V. Show the four different ways by
which the transformers may be connected and give the voltage rating of the two windings in
each case. Use the figure shown below.
