Important Note
This pattern is very simple, but I recommend that you read the basic instructions before you start.
This hat is made crocheting in rounds, each round will begin with a number of chains which will
count some times as the first stitch, and is ended by joining the last stitch with the top of the
beginning chain creating concentric circles slip stitch.
The photo tutorial shows how to make the 6-12 months size. If you are making another size you
can still follow the same instructions the variations are explained at the end of this pattern base
on every size.
These are equivalent crochet terms and abbreviations. Only the names differ, the stitches
themselves are identical.
Round 3. Ch 2, work 1 hdc in same stitch, 2 hdc on each of the following stitches. Sl st on top
of first st to join. (32 sts)
Round 4. Ch 2, work 1 hdc in same st. *1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in st after that. Repeat from *
to last st. sl st on top of first st to join. (48 sts)
Round 5. Ch 2, work 1 hdc in each st. sl st on top of first st to join. (48 sts)
Round 6. Repeat round 5. (48 sts)
Round 7-10. Ch 2, work 1 hdc in each st. sl st on top of first st to join. (48 sts)
Round 11-13. Ch 1, work 1 sc on each st. sl st on top of first st to join. (48 sts)
Use your fingers to shape the hat, lay the hat on a flat surface and compare to the picture above.
If your hat has a weird shape recount your stitches based on the size of the hat that you are
making, count your rounds, and check your gauge. If you are using a bulky type of yarn take in
count that your gauge will be different affecting the size of the hat; however, you can fix it by
using the instructions for the smaller size if the hat is turned inside out to be too big or by
following the instructions for the bigger size if the hat is too small.
EARFLAPS
When working the earflaps, we are going to be using the following st:
Sc next 2 sts tog Every time your pattern calls for this stitch you are going to insert the
hook in the next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (2 loops on hook, Figure 1), insert hook
in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all
3 loops on hook (Figure 2)1 stitch decreased (Figure 3).
LEFT EARFLAP
Lay your hat on a flap surface and lay it down as show in the picture below. You want the
earflap to overlap in front.
Counting from the edge of the right side of the hat as is sitting in front of you count 5 sts to
the right. That is where we will start our next earflap. As you can see I am marking the st with
my needle.
Attach your yarn and repeat round 14-25. Fasten off leaving a small tail of yarn. Weave on and
secure ends.
Your basic earflap is done! Now lets work on the front flap.
FRONT FLAP
Round 7. In this round we are going to go around the entire hat edge by working 1 sc in each st. We
will shape the corners of the earflaps and front flap by working 3 sc in the corner st. as show in the
pictures below. Fasten off leaving a small tail of yarn. Weave on and secure ends.
Sew your buttons to the corners of the front flap as show in the picture and your aviator hat is done.
GOGGLES:
The goggles are very simple to make, just follow the instructions below:
Start by working a loop using your gray yarn. Ch 28, sl st in first ch.
Round 1-2. Ch 1, sc in each chain. (28 scs) Make 2.
STRAP
Round 1. Start by making a loop and working 13 ch. Sc in second ch from hook and sc in each
st until you get to the end of the ch. (12 sc).
Round 2. Ch 1, turn. Work 1 sc in each st. (12 scs)
Round 3. Repeat round 2. Fasten off leaving a tail to sew end together. Wrap the strap around
the 2 circles you preciously make and sew the ends of the strap together as show in picture
below.
GOGGLES EDGE:
Round 1. Using your brown yarn we will crochet around the edge of the goggles. Attach the
yarn anywhere around the edge and ch 1, sc in each st around the edge as shown in the picture
below:
Attach your brown yarn to the edge of the goggles to start working on your strap.
Round 1. Ch 1, sc in next 4 sts. Turn. (4 scs)
Round 2-30. Repeat round 1. Fasten off leaving a tail long enough to sew the strap to the
goggles.
The number of rounds that you work for the strap varies based on the size of the hat you are
making; you can measure and compare to the hat and add or reduce the number of rounds to have
the proper fit.
For the bigger kids goggles, I actually like to reinforce the ends and instead of just sewing the
edges like show in the picture below
you can actually wrap the strap and reinforce it. You will end up with a different look for the
goggles but it will look great. Remember to secure your ends and cut any loose pieces of yarn
left after that.
You can modify the size of the goggles by working less of more stitches for the base circle:
Small: 24 sts
Medium: 28 sts as show in the instructions.
Large: 30 sts
Care Instructions:
Hand wash in cold water with mild soap, re-shape and let air dry.
This hat can be made in many combinations of colors, you can add braids, big buttons to
decorate the front flap, you can make the earflaps in a very bulky and fluffy yarn, etc.
Now, to make any size all you need to do is follow the instructions below to make your basic
aviator hat. You will need to make the earflaps and front flap in the same way as show in the
basic instructions for the size 6-12 months. Yes, there are variations like the size of the earflaps
and front flap but that is determined by the size of the hat you will be working on and the
instructions for that are provided below.
I work and tested this pattern to offer the best instructions, but if you still have a doubt regarding
a round just feel free to contact me and I will gladly help you.

Even when we are following the average size chart provide at the beginning of this tutorial, the
Size of your finish hat may vary based on the type of yarn that you use and how tightly you
crochet. Check your gauge and reduce stitches if is necessary to adjust the size.
