Background

Water is essential to humans. Life exists on the earth because of the availability of water. Without
water, there is no life. All the living things like human, animals and plants need water to grow,
develop and live. People working in different areas need water for different purposes such as for
growing crops, washing the clothes and dishes, for cleaning and gardening and others. So, we
should save clean water for the wellness of our future generations and healthy life of water and
wildlife animals. Many places in the world are suffering water scarcity or shortage and do not have
a supply of safe and clean water for drinking. In order to address these problems and other
problems related to water that were not mentioned, a seminar on saving and conserving water
was organized by our class to educate and informed the participants on what is really happening
in our world today and raise awareness regarding this matter.

A seminar with the theme Save! Water you like or not was conducted and was hosted by Mr.
Norch Van Honoridez, 5th year ECE. During the first part of the program, there were two seminar
talks conducted. The first talk was about Sustainable Water presented by Arch. Socorro Atega,
Executive Director Cebu Uniting for Sustainable Water (CUSW). Then followed by the second talk
about Water Conservation presented by Mr. Lito Vasquez, Executive Assistant-CCENRO. In the
afternoon, the second part of the program about Takakura Composting and creating Briquetting
Machine. Briquetting Machine was presented by Mr. Ian Talisaysay, 5th year ECE and followed
by the Takakura Composting presented by Ms. Nicole Ocubillo, 5th year ECE. After the
presentations, it was followed by the demonstrations of briquetting machine and Takakura
composting. First, it was the briquetting machine that was demonstrated by three different group
and showed how to create your DIY briquettes using the improvised briquetting machines that
were created by the class. It was followed by the demonstration of the Takakura composting. The
attendees participated in the demonstrations and tried to make the briquettes and Takakura
composting with the assistance of the organizers.

The first part of the program informs and educates the participants about how they can sustain
and conserve water for future uses. The two talks about water teaches us about the importance
of water and they ways on how to have a safe and clean water and to conserve water for a
sustainable environment. In connection to it, the second part of the program about Takakura
composting and briquetting are one of the ways to reduce the trashes that may pollute the water
that can make it unsafe and will result to the lack of safe and clean water to use. Thus, aside from
ensuring that we are really conserving water, we should also ensure that the water we drink or
use is safe and clean.

Positive Experience

The activity gave us the opportunity to show how interested and dedicate we are in informing
others about the issues that we are facing right now. We were able to share our ideas to others.
We were glad the we had more than 50 attendees who participated in the activity. I was able to
witness the cooperation of every person in the class. There may be unexpected circumstances
that may happen during the event but we made it. Though we all had our differences but still we
managed to set aside everything just to have a successful event. The most important things that
I learned during the event are to be patient and flexible. We need to have patience because we
cannot control what may happen. There may be unexpected happenings that may occur but if we
do not learn how to be patient, nothing will happen. We also need to be flexible because there
may be unexpected tasks that were not planned. We really have to adjust ourselves to these
happenings. Also, I was glad to see the participants to eagerly participate during the activity. They
were very participative during the whole-day activity.

From the overall activity, I can say that this activity was an opportunity for us to show how
dedicated we are as students and as organizers of the event in educating and informing others
about the problems that we are facing and the possible solutions that we may do in order to solve
these problems. I hope that the learning that each participant learned during the event will also
be shared to others and will continue the cycle of learning and informing about how we can make
our planet a better place and a sustainable one for the future generations to come.

Negative Experience

There were problems that occur before and during the event. During the planning stage for the
event, we were too focused on the less important things. I think we consumed more time deciding
on the food for the lunch than deciding the flow of the program itself. We were focused on the
what should be the food that should be served during the day. Then we came to realize that we
should really not take much time in deciding that one. We almost missed the most important part
which is the flow of the event. Though we encountered this problem, we were still thankful that
we had a successful event and we had overcome this problem.

During the afternoon session, there were only a few participants who came back. It is very sad to
see that some participants only joined the event for CES points. But still we were thankful that the
remaining participants who chose to continue and came back to finish the event participated well
and they were very eager to learn new things. There were unexpected circumstances that occur
before and during the event but these happenings did not stop us to continue the event.

Rating

For me, the overall activity has a rating of 8. It may not be the best event or seminar that have
been conducted but it was still successful and we had achieved our objectives for the event. The
most important part of this event is not how nice the venue is or how delicious that food is but it
is about the learning that the participant may get and the quality of information that we delivered
to them. The activity was also a chance for us to manifest our cooperation and unity as a whole
class in conducting an event not just for ourselves but for anyone who needs to be informed about
the problems in our environment that we are facing. The activity was a success and this served
as a step towards the change that we wanted to happen.
