Receives Award for Honorable Mention for the
2017 Recovery Month Award Program
On September 7th, 2017, at an annual awards banquet held each year by SAMH-
SA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), Labette Center
for Mental Health Services (LCMHS) received recognition for honorable mention
in the Recovery Month Awards Program. Each year SAMHSA present awards
for to organizations that promote Recovery through by holding Recovery Month
Events. This awards banquet was held this year in Washington, DC. During the
event, awards are presented in three different categories: Rally and Walk/Run
Events, Education Events and Special Celebrations. Labette Center received the
honorable mention in the category Special Celebrations for the 2016 Recovery
Month Event, An Evening of Recovery.

My Family Busy with Events and Festivals

My Family Labette has been busy with events and provid-
ing information to the Community! On August 29th, in
conjunction with United Healthcare, My Family Labette

hosted a Community Baby Shower. Over 80 new or expect- all of the companies and organizations in our community that

Nursing Program
Labette Center has been working with Labette Community
College to provide nursing students with more information
about mental health and how nurses can use mental health
knowledge in the medical field. Nursing students from
Labette Community College attend a Mental Health First

to recognize signs of when someone might be suffering
from gambling addiction. This helps students have an un-
derstanding about what to look for with addictions and what
can be done to help the patient.

Active Parenting of Teens Course Being Held at LCMHS
Labette Center will be holding an Active Parenting of Teens course starting on Monday Octo-
ber 23rd, 2017 from 6:00pm-7:30pm and continuing every Monday evening for 6 weeks. This
course will be held in the Centers community room. Light dinner will be provided for all of
those who attend. The course is provided FREE to the community due to grant funding. Inter-
ested individuals should contact Labette Center at 620-421-3770 or 800-303-3770 and ask for
Mark Gardner or Mark Mikel.

The Active Parenting Teens program is an interactive approached program designed for small groups of
10 to 20 participants at a time. Groups meet for six 2 hour sessions on a weekly basis. Parents received
a comprehensive model for parenting teens and preteens. As a model program it contains information
and skills for parents including:

Understanding of parenting styles and the role of Active Parenting


Understanding and application of recent brain research on teen development
Emphasis on character development as a means of equipping teens to survive and thrive
Parenting skills necessary for developing qualities of courage, cooperation, respect, responsibil-
ity and self-esteem and at the same time how to handle behavioral problems.
Explanation of how to apply the model for the goal of prevention in the areas of substance use,
sexuality, and violence.

Mental Health First Aid Course

Labette Center for Mental Health Services will be holding an Adult Mental Health
First Aid course on Monday December 4th, 2017 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and an
Adult Mental Health First Aid course on December 4th, 2017. These courses will
be held at Labette Centers main facility located at 1730 Belmont Parsons KS in the
community room. Participants must register prior to the course. Materials, lunch,
snacks and a light breakfast are provided. At this time the cost of the course is
covered through grant funding so no fees will apply. The next Youth Mental Health
First Aid course will be held on Tuesday February 13th, 2017.
