Regarding the incident that occurred the evening of Monday, October 9, 2017, at the
Gainesville After Hours Clinic, between office staff and Jessica Stipe and her daughter
Courtney Weartien, please find the attached Police Report and Witness Statements.
Because Ms. Stipe has posted a short videotape on-line of the last minute-and-one-
half of an hour-long episode, | write this letter and include the Police Report and Witness
Statements in order to present the entire circumstance.
Ms. Stipe had been increasingly belligerent and abusive to the office staff, cursing
them and threatening them with violence, because she was unwell and had been waiting to
beseen by me for more than an hour. Ms. Stipe demanded her co-payment be returned
such that she could be discharged and seek medical treatment elsewhere. All her payments
were returned to her, and she was so discharged. I went to the front desk only because
after Ms. Stipe received her refund, she refused to leave the office, and continued her
abusive behavior towards staff, Despite repeated requests from the office staff, she
repeatedly demanded to see me instead of leaving
When | walked into in the waiting room, Ms. Stipe and Ms. Weatrien cursed and
threatened me as they had done with the office staff previously. The front desk then called
the police, who warned the two that if they returned to the office, it would be a ‘trespass
violation
At the very end of the events, I most regrettably lost my temper, and spoke to the to
‘women ina most unprofessional manner. Imake no excuses for my unacceptable behavior,
But please appreciate that the videatape is but the last minute or two of a very
abusive tirade against my office staff by the two women. The videotape is very heavily
edited and is taken entirely out ofa very broad context, as the attachments demonstrate.
‘The Witness Statements and Police Report objectively demonstrate that the office staff and
Iwere merely reacting to unreasonable provocations and threats of physical violence,
which is the basis for the police intervention.
Again, while not an excuse for my behavior, a basic reason for my reaction is that |
simply regard my staff as family, and | over-reacted in order to defend them.
Regardless of the context, itis clearly my responsibility and professional duty to
maintain my composure in the presence of patients, notwith standing even the worst of
provocations, | regret losing my temper and speaking to the two women in a manner that
is not befitting a medical doctor. It has never occurred previously with a patient, and it
will most assuredly not occur again,
