A circular pile having a diameter of 0.30m
is 12m long which is embedded in a layer
of dense compacted sand.

1. Compute the point bearing capacity of


the pile.
2. Compute the frictional capacity of the
pile.
3. Compute the allowable capacity of the
pile assuming a factor of safety of 3.
Answer
1. Qb = 522.397 kN

Sample Problem 02
A concrete pile having a diameter of 0.30m is driven
into a loose sand having a unit weight of 20kN/m3.
Coefficient of friction between sand and pile is
0.40. Bearing capacity factor is 80. Lateral
pressure factor is 0.90. Allowable load of pile is
170kN. Factor of safety is 3.25.
1. Compute the ultimate bearing capacity of the
pile.
2. Compute the ultimate frictional capacity of the
pile.
3. Compute the length of the pile.

Sample Problem 03 May 2005
A 0.36m square prestressed concrete pile is
to be driven in a clayey soil. The design
capacity of the pile is 360kN, with a
factor of safety of 2.
1. Compute the end bearing capacity of the
pile.
2. Compute the skin friction expected to
develop along the shaft of the pile.
3. Compute the length of the pile if =0.76.

Sample Problem 04 Nov 2005
A 0.30m x 0.30m concrete pile 22m long is driven in
a clayey soil having an unconfined compressive
strength of 110kN/m2. The unit weight of clayey
soil is 18kN/m3. Frictional constant is 0.76 due
to skin friction. Assume a factor of safety equal
to 2.0 and a bearing capacity factor Nc=9.
1. Compute the capacity of pile due to skin
friction only.
2. Compute the end bearing capacity of pile.
3. Compute the design capacity of the concrete
pile.

Sample Problem 05
A pile is driven in clay. The pipe has an outside
diameter of 400mm and a thickness of 8mm. The pipe
is filled with concrete.
1. Compute the skin resistance of the pile using
method.
2. Compute the skin resistance of the pile using
method if =0.14.
3. Compute the skin resistance of the pile using
method. For the top clay layer of 4m. R=30 and
is normally consolidated and the bottom 8m layer
is over consolidated with an over consolidation
ratio of 2.

Sample Problem 06
A drilled pile has an allowable load of 3658kN. It
has a diameter of shaft of 1m and a bell diameter
at the bottom of 3m. The bored pile is drilled in
a clay layer having a cohesion of 156kPa. Adhesion
factor
=0.535 and bearing capacity factor Nc=9.
Use factor of safety of 3. The base of the bell is
2m below the bottom shaft.
1. Compute the ultimate bearing capacity of the
pile.
2. Compute the ultimate frictional capacity of the
pile.
3. Compute the length of the pile.
