With a well-qualified team comprised of
motivated and passionate individuals, Stu-
dent Center Programs Councils (SCPC)
Homecoming Chair, Gurjote Singh Sethi
believes that this years Homecoming is
prepped for success.
The team bounced around ideas such as
Fall Festival, Haunted and Swarming engagement seen in the brackets of the
Through the Decades, until converging
on The Ramblin 20s.
Discussing a theme is always a long and
well thought out process for the Home-
coming Committee, said Sethi. At the
same time, there is also always passion and
different perspectives on the many differ-
ent theme ideas presented.
This years Homecoming presents its
annual events such as the Mr. and Ms.
Georgia Tech, the Cake Race, Powderpuff
Cheerleading and the Chalking
Contest, as well as the new
Homecoming Carnival, an
event with inflatables, car-
nival games and food. The
event is free to all stu-
dents and will take place
on Oct. 17 from 11 a.m.
to 2 p.m. on Tech Green.
However, the
purpose of the
Hom e c om i n g
Carnival is not
only to bring an
autumnal atmo-
sphere to campus, but to
promote campus inclusivity. In the past,
promoting campus inclusivity has been a
recurring concern, as Homecoming has
been seen by some as a predominantly
Greek event.
We recognize that several demograph-
ics have not participated in Homecoming,
so we wanted to create an institute-wide
celebration of Homecoming through the
Homecoming Carnival, and engage more
people with Homecoming, Sethi said.
He believes that the Homecoming Car-
nival will be this years most anticipated
event, unifying people across campus on
Tech Green for a fun Homecoming cel-
ebration.
To educate people about Homecoming
and bring everyone together for a celebra-
tion of our great institution, we created the
Homecoming Carnival, Sethi said. We
believe this is a step in the right direction
and will lay the foundations for us to con-

tinue to increase campus engagement in
Homecoming.
Furthermore, in making an effort to
expand the reach of Homecoming to
groups other than Greek organizations
on campus, the Homecoming committee
has reached out to various clubs and or-
ganizations, including the Residence Hall
Association.
The results of the Homecoming com-
mittees efforts are evident in the increased
Homecoming Competition.
Introducing the Homecoming Carnival
is not the only improvement the Home-
coming committee has implemented.
SCPC runs several events during
Homecoming; however, we also have many
administrative responsibilities for Home-
coming, Sethi said.
This year, the Homecoming com-
mittee focused on improving internal
processes that will allow them to lay a
solid framework for
Homecoming in the
approaching years,
such as refining the
point-tracking system
during the competi-
tion.
We spent a lot of time
and resources creating a
better way to manage the
processes for Homecoming,
making sure people are trained
and ensuring the procedures
security and integrity,
Sethi said.
In talking about the significance of
Homecoming to Techs campus, Sethi
comments on celebrating Tech and
how Homecoming unifies the Tech com-
munity.
First, the competition portion further
builds relationships between organizations
and people across campus, and bolsters
our community, Sethi said. Second, the
celebration brings a general sense of appre-
ciation for Tech. Finally, the Homecoming
game brings us all together to create a uni-
fied front behind Georgia Tech football.
When I think about Homecoming, I think
about every little interaction that happens
over those two weeks, every smile or laugh
that happens at an events, every I love
Georgia Tech that comes from a students
mouth and every crowd roar that happens
at our Homecoming game, and a summa-
tion of all those amazing experiences is
what Homecoming means to me, and what
I want it to mean to the Tech community.

In 1969, the Mini 500
made its debut as a Home-
coming activity.
However, this was not
the first time students
rode tricycles on Techs
campus. The race actually
comes from an old frater-
nity prank where pledges
were forced to use tricycles
to get around campus.
Today, the Mini 500
is seen more as a privi-
lege, with only 51 teams
(including Reck Club) al-
lowed to participate.
This year, the event will
take place on Friday, Oct.
20 at 5 p.m. at Peters Park-
ing Deck.
Originally, the event
had male teams complete
15 laps and female teams
complete 10 laps. This has
been changed so everyone
now completes eight laps.

racers and three pit crew
members) compete to see
who can complete the laps

On Sept. 28, students
gathered around the Cam-
panile, stirring with an-
ticipation and eager to see
who would be headlining
this years Homecoming
concert.
Following the buildup,
the atmosphere of antici-
pation gave way to excite-
ment as word spread rap-
idly through campus that
Lil Dicky would be head-
lining the concert this
year, with opening acts DJ
Steph-O, Apollo and DJ
Golden Brain.
It is no surprise that
students are excited. The
concert, which serves as a
kick-off to Homecoming
Week on the evening of
Oct. 13, is central to get-
ting campus excited about
celebrating Tech. Many
feel that Lil Dicky will do
just that.
The enthusiasm on
campus has been con-
tagious, said Gautam
Sowda, fourth-year BME.
People are really excited
about the line-up this year.
I cant wait. Its going to be
a great time.

The biggest thing
with this event is to fol-
low all of the rules. Some
rules may be obvious, but
many result in your team
being disqualified.
No part of the
originally red
Radio Flyer tri-
cycle should be
visible.
There are
specific modi-
fications that
are and are not
allowed. One
of the most im-
portant of these is
that teams must re-
place the original tricycle
wheels.
The Radio Flyer tricy-
cles are originally rated for
up to 49 pounds. Accord-
ing to the rules however,
the replacement wheels
cannot exceed the original

friend and has since con-
tinued to his career, releas-
ing songs, such as $ave
dat money, and the ever
popular Pillow Talking.
His relevance and cur-
rent work have students
excited to see him perform
live here at Tech.

Every year, SCPC in
conjunction with other or-
ganizations puts in plenty
of work to ensure that the
concert is as well received
as it has been.
This year the home-
coming concert will start
at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct.
13 on Tech Green.
The concert is vital to
campus and Homecom-
ing festivities, as it sets
the tone for Homecoming
Week and gets students
amped for the fun ahead.
This, along with the build-
ing excitement, makes the
concert a key part of the
Homecoming activities.

started working last spring
to organize the event.
We started planning
earlier in the spring se-
mester than we had in the
past, said Renee Botyrius,
third-year CS and concerts
chair for SCPC. This gave
us more options as to who
we could bring because
artists were still working
on scheduling their plans
for the fall.
With more time and
options, the committee
was able to better align the
act to the main consider-
ations of SCPC: student
body opinion, artist cost
and availability and artist
reputation and relevance.
Last year SCPC de-
cided to have two smaller
acts rather than one big
one in order to cater to
different music tastes. Un-
fortunately one of the art-
ists (Bebe Rexha) backed
out last minute to host the
European Music Awards
instead. This left SCPC
scrambling to find another
artist and they later signed
Timeflies (after the origi-
nal artist announcement).
We send out a survey work and early planning
every spring, and from

ance on how to modify
them and stay within the
regulations.
The more serious vio-
lations fall under being a
danger to yourself or oth-
ers. This includes alcohol
and drinking. If any team
member is visibly intoxi-
cated or if a race judge sees
alcohol, that team is im-
mediately disqualified.
A trickier but
equally serious subset
of this rule involves
smashing a tricycle
during the race. Any time
a teams
trike
falls apart past
the point of being
rideable, the crowd in-
evitably shouts encour-
agement for the rider to
smash the trike.
Both this rule violation
along with alcohol infrac-
tions result in a two year

At this point, the ball
is in their court, they can
choose to accept the of-
fer and we continue into
the contracting process,
Botyrius stated. How-
ever, if they choose to
decline the offer, then we
refer back to our list and
reconsider everything that
I mentioned above.

tober, Georgia has yet to

backwards and it is best to
rotate riders after each
lap. Each team is re-

wheel rotations, re-

teams pit area.
The Mini 500 is an
exciting and entertaining
Homecoming event and
not one to miss. Be sure to
join Buzz, President Peter-
son and his wife and the
Ramblin Reck Club next
Friday to watch (or race).
My committee and
I are extremely excited
about the event this year,
Botyrius said. Unlike in
past years, we only sent
out one offer and that was
really exciting to hear back
from our first choice with
an acceptance. Im sure
this excitement will carry
us through to the concert.
However, just because
the artist has been chosen
does not mean the work
is over. As with any large
event, work will be going
on behind the scenes up to
and even after the event to
make sure that it is a flaw-
less experience.
As far as work that
we still have to do, we
mainly have to finalize all
of the logistics, Botyrius
explained. They entail
working through details
with all of our vendors as
well as working on the day
of schedule and how that
day will actually flow from
setup, to the actual show,
to cleanup.
It is because of all of
this work that the con-
cert is able to create such
excitement on campus
and sustain it throughout
Homecoming Week and
the festivities it entails.

Inevitably, right after we re-
lease admission decisions, Ill be
walking around campus or in a
meeting and someone will say, I
would not want your job.
This is normally because
theyve just heard from someone
in their neighborhood who is
upset about not being admitted
and they begin to imagine that
type of vitriol and anger at ten or
100 fold. And, like all of us, there

are times (usually after someone
confronts me at the gym or my
kids school) where Ive got that
momentary thought that a trade
sounds pretty good.
But then I realize they do not
see what I see. They see the people
and hear the stories of the students
and families who were not admit-
ted; they hear the frustration and
disappointment and confusion. I
want you to know that I see you.
Most of you enter Tech basi-
cally knowing me as the email
guy or perhaps vaguely from
your admission letter or a talk at
your high school or open house

But remember some of those
agonizing days and nights in high
school when you were working on
your admission essays and craft-
ing your short answer responses
or figuring out if you should list

on your application? Yeah, I read
those.
Each year our staff reads every
single one of the applications we
receive. As an admitted student
your application was read at least
two or three times. And its not

five people to review it. I want you
to know that I know you.
In the media and on websites
and in most communities, the
story quickly becomes average
GPAs or median SAT/ACT scores
or some other quick metric like
the number of AP/IB courses a
student has taken. On powerpoint
slides and graphics we create class
profiles that categorize into ma-
jor or college or geography or eth-
nicity or gender.
But the truth is that when we
are deliberating over which stu-
dents to offer admission to, our

discussions surround the ways
you have impacted those around
you in high school your fam-
ily, your friends, your teammates,
your fellow co-workers or club
members or researchers.
We are not focused on comma
splices or italics in your essays, but
instead view your writing as a se-
ries of promises and commitments
of what you will do when you ar-
rive on campus.
Our process is not perfect.
Ill be the first to attest that each
year there are literally thousands
of great students we do not offer

ENCROACHMENT
At 1:12 a.m. during the
morning of Saturday, Sept. 30,
GTPD received a call from
CSC staff, who were at the time
holding two college age males,
who were found entering Bobby
Dodd Stadium.
The pair, one Georgia State
student and one Tech student,
were found entering Bobby Dodd
Stadium through gate three and
detained while attempting to take
a photo of the field.
After having their pictures
taken, both were issued criminal
trespass warnings for Bobby Dodd
Stadium for two years, and the
Tech student was issued a student
code of conduct violation.
CHASE THE PAPER
At 7:53 a.m. on the morning
of Tuesday, Sept., 26, a GTPD
officer obsered a vehicle parked
in the middle of the road on
Williams Street. A GCIC check
on the vehicle returned as stolen
out of Atlanta from the day before.
The only damage done to the
car was a missing rear-view mirror.
An inventory of the vehicle was
conducted and miscellaneous
papers were found in the front
seat and on the floor board. The
trunk contained a stuffed animal,
dumbbells, miscellaneous papers
and some clothing. Additionally,
an empty gas can was with the car.
After finishing the search, a
tow truck was called and took
possession of the car.
FOLLOWER FOILED
On Tuesday, Sept. 26, a
Tech employee filed a harassing
communication report in response
to a series of communication from
a former colleague.
The victim was first contacted
at 12:42 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 1,
when she received an email from
a colleague she knew from over
10 years ago when she worked
on a project with the offender
in graduate school. The email
stated that the offender would
be heading to Atlanta in late
September and was hoping to
spend some time with the victim.
Originally, she did not respond
to the email because she did not
recognize the name.
At 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept.
19, the offender showed up at the
Bunger-Henry Building looking
for the victim, but she had already
left for the day. The offender asked
the victims graduate students for
her phone number but was denied.
Later that day, the offender sent
another email to the victim asking
to meet on campus. The victim
originally responded that they
could meet at another time but
rescinded the offer after feeling
uncomfortable.
On the morning of Thursday,
Sept. 21, the offender showed up
at the victims office yet again,
this time with a box of candy.
He hugged her and kissed her on
the cheek before stating that he
wanted to take her out for dinner.
He continued by telling her how
always thought of her, and how he
dreamed about her.
The victim made it clear to
the offender that they were not
friends, and she did not share the
same feelings for him. She told him
she did not want to see him again
and to stop all communication.
The victim then left to walk to
the Ford ES&T building for a
meeting. The offender folllowed
along and talked about how happy
he was to see the victim, and
she again reiterated that she did
not share the same feelings and
did not want to see the offender
again. The offender hugged the
victim goodbye at the Ford ES&T
building and said he would email
her later.
After the meeting, the offender
emailed the victim about setting
up a meeting for dinner, and then
sent another later indicating he
was waiting for her at a restaurant
near her house. The victim did not
repond to any emails at this point
in time and asked GTPD to issue
a criminal trespass to the offender.
On Tuesday, Sept., 26, GTPD
called the offender and spoke with
him over the phone. The offender
confirmed he had left for Atlanta
on Sept. 19 and that he had
decided to try and meet up with
the victim while in the city.
After arriving in Atlanta, the
offender went to the Bunger-
Henry where he said he passed
his phone number along to the
victims graduate students and
told them to give it to her.
At the end of the call, the
GTPD officer told the offender
he was being served a criminal
trespass set to expire on Sept. 26,
2019. The offender also agreed to
cease contact with the victim.

Oculogx wins big at Atlanta startup battle

Oculogx, a startup based
out of Tech, won this quarters
Atlanta Startup Battle. The team,
consisting of four students from
Tech and one student from Duke,
recently won the battle and its
$100,000 prize. In just under a
months time, they will be vying
with five other undergraduate-
level startups at the National
Final of the Collegiate Inventors
Competition.
The idea behind the
startup came from the initial
complementary ideas of Charu
Thomas, a second-year IE, and
Sarthak Srinivas, a third-year
CS. The pair both had prior
experience in research at Tech
but shared a fascination with
augmented reality. The result of
their efforts is Oculogx, a startup
company aiming to improve
operations in logistics and supply
chain industry with the use of
interactive augmented reality.
Human beings will be
working with machines and
algorithms and we exist at the
intersection, Srinivas said about
Oculogx.
A major part of the teams
focus is the development of indoor
navigation inside warehouses,
with Srinivas saying, I was
initially interested in the question
of how do we navigate ourselves
indoors?

Srinivas initially thought of
his idea as consumer-based but
quickly realized its potential
benefit to enterprises, particularly
in the warehouse.
Oculogx recently came away as
victors from this quarters Atlanta
Startup Battle and currently has
plans to use it as a springboard to
further success for the company.
The competition is based out of
Tech Square Labs, with Oculogx
competing with over 100 startup
ideas to secure a $100,000
investment.
We want to make this real,
Srinivas said. We plan to use the
money that we won and a little
more to get our application to a
point where this can actually be
deployed.
The next step for the company
is the National Collegiate
Inventors Competition Final
in November of this year. The
members of Oculogx have been
preparing for the final in various
ways.

MARTA organizes large-scale terrorism drill

On Saturday, Sept. 30,
terrorists took over the
Midtown MARTA station. After
an initial explosion, they held the
station with gunfire before APD
and a SWAT team confronted
them. But these terrorists were
actors, hired by MARTA in order
to challenge employees and other
agencies in an extreme emergency
preparedness drill.
A few minutes after midnight,
an explosion startled actors,
playing civilians and MARTA
employees. Terrorists armed with
guns loaded with blanks crouched
against the wall, waiting to throw
responding officers into what
would be the largest emergency
preparedness exercise in the state.
This drill is an annual exercise
run by MARTA that involves
statewide groups including
Atlanta Fire Rescue, Atlanta Police
Department, Georgia Emergency
Management Services and federal
entities like the Department of
Homeland Security. According
to Keith Parker, the CEO and
General Manager of MARTA,
this drill involves up to 400
people and takes six months of
preparation.

on terrorism, but in the past

Weinstein: fear and loathing in Los Angeles
That Harvey Weinstein
was able to harass and assault
women unimpeded since the
nineties reveals something is
deeply wrong with Hollywood
culture and what is especially
infuriating is that this is a story
that should have broken over a
decade ago.
Weinstein, a co-founder
with his brother Bob of both
Miramax and the Weinstein
Company, was always known
by his peers to be somewhat of a
bully, unafraid to unleash legal,
economic or emotional pains
upon those who crossed him.
The overarching story
outlined by news reports
suggests a combination of fear
and power dynamics with a
culture of tolerance and secrets.
While the many victims of
Weinsteins harassment and
assaults cannot be blamed for
choosing to remain silent in
the moment, those around
Weinstein with the power
to do so his fellow execu-
tives at Miramax, or later at
the Weinstein Company, or
others within the know-all circles
in Hollywood should have
spoken out earlier.
According to a New York-
er story, sixteen former and
current executives and assistants
at Weinsteins companies ...
witnessed or had knowledge
of unwanted sexual advances
and touching.
Those sixteen people said
that Weinsteins behavior
was well-known within
Miramax and the Weinstein

More than two years ago, I
came to Tech as an undergradu-
ate freshman. I am an interna-
tional student, and this would
be the first time that I would
be spend an extended amount
of time in a country other than
my own.
Having previously travelled
around Europe, I had certain
ideas about the culture of the
West. It was safe, predictable
and liberal, in stark opposition
to the conservatively Muslim
culture of my native Pakistan,
a state in perpetual political
turmoil.

in my time here I have realized
that things are more nuanced
than that. The United States is a
country deeply divided and the

when it was not like this.

Catalan and even our own
recent presidential election.
Moreover, democracies are
founded upon having a vot-
ing system where opinions
should be properly repre-
sented, meaning that cast-
ing ballots is just as impor-
tant as the publics stances.
By appealing to what is
popular, you run the possi-
bility of oversimplifying the
nuances of public opinion
into a single political desire.
This further divides society
into those guided by the
defined will of the people
and those who inhibit the
former, creating an atmo-
sphere where only one pre-
determined way of thinking
is legitimate.
Consider the recent
Brexit ordeal, where leaders
of the populist U.K. Inde-

was still elected president
despite not being the pre-
ferred choice of a majority
of Americans. As the last
few months have shown,

public. Even in local elec-
tions, the pervasive effects
of gerrymandering and a

tween what a party earns at

is inherently undemocratic,
but an almost universal flaw
to how modern democra-
cies are structured.

democratic to deny a major-
ity opinion. In the Cata-
lonian referendum, 90% of
those who voted were pro-
independence from Spain.
To say that this course of
action is better or worse for
the state of Europe is irrel-
evant to the fact that the
people voiced their opinion
as any other constituency
would. Such is the risk and
the duty of democratic gov-
ernments.
The goal of a democ-
racy is not to perpetuate
happiness, but to make
rules that everyone can
follow in a representa-
tive process that every-
one should agree is fair.
Furthermore, the increas-
ing presence of populism
undermines this crucial
pillar of democracy.

Just as the recent ref-
erendum for Catalonian
independence is wreaking
havoc among the constitu-
ents of Spain, it is worth
taking a look at the effects
of a similar dramatic exit

percent vote in favor of
leaving the EU, a populist
movement that has been
popular since the 70s voted
to overturn a staple of Brit-
ish life.

the British Pound suffered
its greatest one-day fall on

leaving the EU would be
disastrous for the countrys
economy.
Consequently, deprecia-
tion has caused the cost of
imports to skyrocket (the
U.K. imports 50 percent
of their food). Domestic
inflation has additionally
risen faster than workers

of living to plummet too.
Do the implications of
these kinds of economic
metrics create a sense of sta-
bility? It depends.
Despite these large eco-
nomic setbacks, the kind
of apocalyptic economic
downturn that former

the pound remains around
10 percent lower than the
dollar, the U.K. economy
continues to expand, with
unemployment rates falling

In the short-term, Brexit
may very well show prom-
ise to not be a disaster.
But the rebuttal of a nega-
tive does not equal a posi-
tive whether Brexit will
bring economic stability
in the long-run, only time
will tell.
What is more interest-
ing, however, is the effects
that Brexit is having on
other spheres of importance
that receive less circulation.
For example, by March
2019, Britain will have ex-
tracted themselves from the
single-market, making EU
students in the British high-
er education system pay in-
ternational tuition rates.
This could severely im-
pact research grants, facul-
ty, student aid as well as the
overall quality of education
in the U.K.
Already there have been
decreases within the appli-
cant pool, as well as a cloud

the future of research fund-

criminalizing marijuana.

dents can receive only sixteen ses-
sions for their entire time at the
Institute.
Two years ago, I optimistically
visited the counseling center to
get help. Twenty-three months
ago, I left the counseling center
feeling discouraged. Ten months
ago, I tried to speak with Mr. Bud
Peterson about the poor mental
health resources at Tech and ways
to improve it. Nine months ago,
Mr. Stein said nothing to reas-
sure me after I met with him. A
few weeks ago, a student on cam-
pus was shot, which quite possibly
could have been hindered if he
had received help for his mental
health issues.
Is a death on campus what it
takes to bring about change? Why
does change have to happen after
its too late?
If we had had better mental
health programs, maybe the re-
cent death on campus could have
been prevented.
The Institute needs to start
spending money on things that
matter. Lets start spending mon-
ey to better Georgia Techs coun-
seling services.

On Friday, Oct. 6, patrons at
the elegant Buckhead Theatre
initially complained of blasting
subzero air. The chilly venue soon
warmed with the electric energy
of LANY. With a self-titled album
out June 30 this year, the night
was filled with the new songs and,
of course, old favorites from the
Los Angeles-based dreamy indie
pop trio.
Before the band arrived on-
stage in a totally darkened the-
atre, the music slowly built while
the giddy audience began chant-
ing the bands name at a deafen-
ing volume. To their great satis-
faction, the drummer, Jake Goss,
sauntered onstage and beat out a
few notes. He was followed by the
guitarist, Les Priest, and finally,
the lead singer, Paul Klein.

Weapon, The A-Team and
plenty of other shows, Mac-
Gyver resurfaced after its debut
in the 80s in the form of a mod-
ernized reboot.
This classic TV show, about
a government agent doing ge-
neric spy-like things while hack-
ing together spare junk to save
the world, aged surprisingly well.
CBS began airing the shows sec-
ond season on Friday, Sept. 29.
Despite having a similar prem-
ise and episode structure, the re-
boot has made a rather large num-
ber of changes. The maintained
episode structure begins with the
most intense moment of a mis-
sion then proceeds to elaborate on
a subsequent, far less interesting
mission for the rest of the episode.
One of the most notable
changes is that Angus MacGyver
(Lucas Till, X-Men: First Class)
now works with a regular team
for each of his missions instead
of having the occasional partner.
This team is comprised of four
people (and occasionally their

LANY concert that night, and
the vast majority of the audience
yelled confirmation.
A few songs later, Klein de-
cided that his jam sessions on
the keyboard and dance sessions

The costume designer can be
excused due to the nature of the
show. One can hardly blame tele-
vision or movies for following the
trend of treating technology in
general and hacking in particular
like black magic, but Jack Dalton
and Patricia Thornton (Sandrine

Eadss character seems to have
been hit a few too many times
between season one and two, and
MacGyvers trusted friend now
serves as little more than a vehi-
cle for further explanation. Jacks
contributions during missions are
limited mostly to Punch it and
Punch it again.
If it were not for season one
and Eadss other works, one would
be left wondering if this were the
fault of the script or the actor. The
second episode of this season al-
lows for a little more range, but
the episode still boils down to vio-
lence without thought.
By far, the best resistance to
logic comes from MacGyver him-
self, whose frequent voice-overs
explain how he turns scraps into
fully functional plot devices and
other necessary gadgets. With
the right mindset, it can even be
quite humorous to watch Mac-
Gyvers joyous yet usually en-
tirely unnecessary dismantling
of smartphones.
This phone obsession is back
in full force for season two. In
the first episode, MacGyver finds
it necessary to take the cover off
of a phone in order to hide it and
its camera in a cloth ball, which

Still delivering the chorus

stretched out on the bobbing,
roaring crowd as waves of renewed
screams passed through the audi-
ence. Somehow, he returned safely

In the latter half of the con-
cert, Klein bridged into one of his
slower pieces, current location,
and gave the most powerful per-
formance of the night. After tying
back his hair, stripping down the
music and fading out the swirling
red and purple lights, he sat in a
single stream of white light.
The lone figure at his keyboard
delivered emotional lyrics with
devastating simplicity: I need my
current location / to be your cur-
rent location. / Fly back to me.
Appropriately responsive, the fans
settled down, swaying and mur-
muring the lyrics with him.
The mood shifted back quickly
and naturally, swinging to the
more upbeat pink skies and
washing the stage in bright fuch-
sia lights. Continuing the liveli-
ness, LANY then closed the offi-
cial setlist with Hericane, a song

would have worked just as well
with an intact phone.
Once viewers get used to ig-
noring the voices in their heads
that scream about the lunacy of it
all, the show is borderline decent.
The first seasons overarching plot,
centered on Nikki Carpenter
(Tracy Spiridakos, Revolution)
Holt, Mr. Robot), was interest-
ing while it lasted but ended long
before the season did.
The show could now benefit
greatly from some main plot to
tie together the extraordinarily
modular episodes. At this point,
the episodes could probably be
reordered without too much
inconsistency.
With the assassin escaping at
the end of the first season, one
would logically assume that the
second seasons overarching plot
would be focused on Murdoc (Da-
vid Dastmalchian, Ant-Man), a
madman particularly interested in
MacGyvers tendency to defy de-
feat against all odds.
Instead, the first episode briefly
explores MacGyvers missing fa-
ther before proceeding as though
an assassin were not on the loose.
Based on a henchmans ill-advised
one-liner, the missing father and
escaped assassin could be related.
However, this connection may
simply be speculation due to the
shows lack of narrative coherence.
The second season is currently
scheduled for 22 episodes, and
amusingly the show displays no
signs of remorse for its artistic
views of the laws of physics and
common sense.

Although few tend to see it,
there is beauty in mundanity. Peo-
ple are so predisposed to find the
flaws in their realities and, more
so, in the realities of others. They
judge and grumble and criticize
because they deserve better or
because it simply feels good to be
better than someone else.
In his newest feature, The
Florida Project, director Sean
Baker attempts to counter this
trend. Set in a gaudily painted
purple motel outside of Disney
World, called The Magic King-
dom, the film follows six-year
old Moonee, played by Brooklynn
Prince in her debut role, as she
finds adventure in all corners of
her roadside wonderland.
To most viewers, there would
be absolutely nothing magical
about the decrepit Magic King-
dom motel, and Baker acknowl-

various tourists throughout the
movie who revile the thought of
staying at the purple motel.
Still, to Moonee and her brash
20-something mother, Halley
(Bria Vinaite), the motel is home.
Behind Bakers lush, vibrant
camera, viewers have no reason
to doubt them. The film follows
Moonee and her gaggle of errant
children from around the motel
as they wander the strip malls on
the outskirts of Disney World in
search of adventure.
In the midst of Moonees sum-
mertime reverie, viewers see the
darker undercurrents of the pov-
erty as Baker examines Halley
through Moonees eyes. Viewers
accompany Moonee and Halley
through more sordid adventures
as Halley loudly and rambunc-
tiously panhandles and scams her
way to making rent each week.
While Moonee has a blast, the
audience is always vaguely aware
of the difficulties that the free-
spirited Halley must overcome to
provide for her child on a daily
basis. The movie seeks the audi-
ences empathy. It neither glorifies
nor condemns the circumstances
in which Moonee grows up but
simply presents them as is.
The entire narrative is quite
naturalistic and infectiously fun,
despite the context. Without a
soundtrack, the films scenes are
punctuated only by childrens
giggles as Moonee and her friends
race to spit on neighbors cars,

share an ice cream or even turn off
the motels power out of curiosity.
Brooklynn Prince is magnifi-
cent as Moonee, making every
precocious line of dialogue ooze
charm and innocence, even when
she is yelling curses at shop own-
ers at the top her lungs. Willem
Dafoe (Platoon) also appears as
Bobby, the kindly but firm man-
ager of the motel.
Despite all of Moonees mis-
adventures and Halleys often il-
licit and inflammatory activities,
Bobby never fails to insist that the
duo are good people deep down.
As a stable and sincere character
to contrast Moonee and Halley,
he helps stave off viewers instinct
to dismiss Halley and Moonee as
unprincipled, uncouth members
of Americas poor. Bobbys char-
acter fills in Moonees world as a
constant caretaker and defender

album is light on the lyricism
but never loses its rhythm and
blues identity.
Take Me Apart arrives af-
ter years of Kelela toiling and
succeeding in the underground
hip-hop and alternative R&B
scene. Her first mixtape Cut 4
Me was released in 2013, and
her first EP Hallucinogen was
released in 2015.
In 2016, she collaborated with
other industry heavyweights, who
contributed significantly to her
career as a burgeoning R&B star.

for herself in this crowded space
by making an album that truly
sounds like no other.
While bands like The Internet
and St. Beauty contribute to a
more alternative side of R&B and
SZA and Jhen Aiko contribute
to a slow, entrancing side, Kelela
exists elsewhere. With Take Me
Apart, Kelela places herself on
the side of R&B that is heavily in-
fluenced by electronic music, and
the genre is much better for it.
Multiple songs on the album
sound like they came from the
same studio sessions that yielded

tion to Gorillazs album. The more
powerful songs of the album,
coupled with excellent production

and layered vocal work, begin to
sound like the songs of the three

R&B vocalist.
The albums standouts are less
standouts than they are standard
cross-sections of an excellently
crafted debut release. Enough
features simple lyrics, but the
explosive sounds and interplay
between the hooks lyrics and in-
strumentation create a song that
keeps the listener on their toes.
The albums title track, along
with LMK, create the same feel-
ing in the same way: concentrated
lyrical phrases coupled with pleas-
ant production ultimately make
an entire album that never gets
boring to the listener in the way
that some R&B records do.
While songwriting credits are
split between a couple of different
writers per song, the albums pro-

duction mainstay is Ariel Rechts-
haid. This industry veteran got his
big break in 2007 after producing
Hey There Delilah for the Plain
White Ts, and he won the Gram-
my Award for Best R&B Perfor-
mance for producing Ushers song

Rechshaids frequent collabo-
rators include Vampire Weekend,
Solange, Adele and HAIM not
surprising when listening to the
instrumentation behind each song
on Take Me Apart.
In 2017, one apparent trend is
the endless blending of musical
genres. When successful, these
unexpected unions are surprising
and satisfying. With Take Me
Apart, Kelela put her immense
talent and refined ear for genre-
mixing on display, resulting in
an R&B album that merits being
played again and again.

ing and thrilling buildup.
The crowd started chanting for
LANYs return before the band
had even fully exited the stage.
Less than two minutes later, the
band members returned to per-
form their two biggest hits.
With an array of soft rainbow-
colored screens and lights, their
most recent single Super Far was
the most visually pleasing perfor-
mance of the night. Klein dabbed
on the beat, triggering widespread
laughter. Then he grabbed a fans
phone and continued filming with
it as he performed on stage.
Maintaining the wild energy
in the song that put them on the
map, ILYSB (short for I Love
You So Bad), LANY delivered a
final performance that exceeded
all expectations. Klein climbed on
the drum set and jumped off per-
fectly in time with the final beat
drop.
Overall, the evening was an
impressive display of not only a
clearly talented band but also a
passionate fanbase. Few other
concerts turn floodlights on the
audience nearly as often as was
done in LANYs show, and rarely
do other performers interact so
fluidly or frequently with their
audience. In nearly every song,
Klein bent to touch hands, gave
and received roses or thanked the
enraptured crowd.
Despite the almost total dark-
ness during song transitions and
the bass that sometimes over-
powered the vocals, the audience
and the band united to create an
awe-inspiring evening of mutual
appreciation.
In explaining their name,
LANY hoped their music would
spread from their home of Los
Angeles (LA) all the way to New
York (NY). While their reach in
the Big Apple is undetermined,
Atlanta has certainly embraced
the West coasters with full force.

What does the future hold for
Jedidiah Bradley? Coming back
to Tech was a foregone conclu-
sion; his contract mandated that
the Brewers pay for the remainder
of his undergraduate education.
Afterwards, he says, he is kick-
ing around a lot of options. For
the only Tech student who has
struck out a Major League Base-
ball batter, those options are sure
to abound.
Nowadays, Bradley is basi-
cally indistinguishable from any
homework. He asks and answers
questions in class. But beneath
the surface, he is rich with expe-
riences that few of his classmates
have. He is the only one who can
speak fondly of shenanigans in
the Braves bullpen in the early in-
nings of games. He is the only one
who has firsthand experience with
star outfielder Ender Inciarte, the
only one who has demonstrated
his craft in front of tens of thou-
sands of people.
Dont let his humility fool you.
Jed Bradley is far from a typical
student. He is a former profession-
al athlete, a hometown kid made
good and entirely at peace with
his up-and-down foray into pro-
fessional sports. In fact, he wor-
ries more about the potential for
injuries in young athletes today
than he does his own career. Yet
Bradley is more than another ath-
lete with a set of statistics meant
to describe his career; he is a cap-
tivating person.

Yellow Jacket Fencing Club is on point

The popular perception of the
sport of fencing involves com-
petitors sparring with blades and
wearing a mesh-like metal cloth-
ing over white protective gear.
Although that image is partially
correct, there is much more to
fencing than simple sword fights.
That much is evident from speak-
ing with Stephanie Baione, the
public relations chair for the Yel-
low Jacket Fencing Club.
The Yellow Jacket Fencing
Club primarily recruits through
publicity on social media, flyers
and during the club recruiting
time at FASET. Many of the club
members come to college with no
fencing experience, as did Baione,
who says that she heard about it
through FASET and wanted to
try something different. While
acknowledging that the sport may
not be for everyone, Baione hopes
to introduce it to those who find it
interesting. While different from
a typical club sport, fencing at-
tracts a diverse group of students
across Tech.
Baione emphasized that fenc-
ing is not just one sport, but in-
stead three, each based off a dif-
ferent weapon. Beginners start
off with a foil, but after much
practice, have the opportunity to
select the pe or sabre. Depend-
ing on the weapon, the target area
changes, as does the protective
attire, but the goal remains the
same no matter the weapon: score
a touch against the opponent.

The Jackets compete within
the Southern Intercollegiate Fenc-
ing Association (SIFA), which in-
cludes schools like the University
of Florida, Clemson, the Univer-
sity of Tennessee and other Geor-
gia schools, such as the University
of Georgia, Mercer and Emory.
Baione identified Tennessee as
Techs most frequent opponent
and most akin to a rival, but the
term rival is hardly appropriate,
as fencing is more of an individ-
ual sport when it comes to tour-

With Miamis exciting win
against Florida State came some
disappointing news: Leading
rusher Mark Walton would un-
dergo season-ending surgery
on his ankle. Prior to his injury,
Walton accounted for 54 percent
of the Canes rushing yards with
428 yards (with a whopping 7.6
yards per carry) and three rush-
ing touchdowns. Waltons absence
in the upcoming game with the
Jackets could limit the versatility
of the Miami offense, but RB Tra-
vis Homer, who appears primed
to receive the majority of touches
in Waltons absence, has actually
outperformed Walton in terms of
yards per carry this season.
If Miami opts to focus more
on the passing game, the Jackets
defense might play more Cover 3
and Cover 4 to limit the passing
game. Indeed, quarterback Malik
Rosier has found success in the air
thus far, averaging 272.5 YPG.
Regardless of the focus of Miamis
offense, Techs secondary will
need to be on their game to limit
Miamis offensive production.
Miamis offense is by no means
ruined by the loss of Walton, but
it is certainly a bad blow to a team
that has had a few close calls thus
far. Waltons loss might prove de-
cisive come Saturday.

While Tech and Miami are
tied in their all-time matchups at
11-11, Miami soundly beat Tech
35-21 and 38-21 in their last two
matchups. Canes head coach
Mark Richt, who served as UGA
head coach from 2001-2015, has
years of experience against the
Jackets triple option.
While the unconventional
triple option can perplex oppos-
ing defenses, Richts experience
against it can serve as a boon to
the Miami front seven. Richt also
has a history of success against the
Jackets with a 16-2 career record
as a head coach. Although Tech
has historically struggled against
Richts squads, the Jackets have
fought the odds before and come
out on top, having beaten Richt as
recently as 2014.
But as Techs early season
contests have shown, even hav-
ing ample time to prepare for the
triple option is no guarantee of
success. Tennessee, despite having
an entire summer to prepare, still
gave up 41 points to Tech, and
Tech has averaged 36.5 points per
game. Miami will have had only
a week to prepare for the option,
so Miamis defense will be in for a
rigorous test. Miami will need to
keep the ball out of the offenses
hands to avoid the death march.

Miami and Tech both cur-
rently sit atop the ACC Coastal
division with 2-0 records in con-
ference play. This game will de-
cide which team will take control
of the ACC Coastal division. The
last time the Jackets won the ACC
Coastal division was 2014, when
they lost to Florida State in the
ACC Championship game.
There is more at stake than first
place for Tech, though: Winning
this game could mean becoming
ranked. The Jackets currently sit
just outside the AP ranked poll, at
No. 26 in the AP poll and No. 27
in the Coaches poll. Beating the
No. 11 ranked team can catapult
the Jackets into the fringes of the
CFB playoff picture.
With a win on Saturday, Tech
could become ranked for the first
time since Sept. 26, 2015, when
Tech was ranked No. 20 in the
country before losing to an un-
ranked Duke team.
A Miami win would cement
their status as the Coastal favor-
ites Miamis remaining ACC
schedule features only one ranked
opponent in Virginia Tech,
ranked No. 15, and there is little
reason to doubt that a win over
Georgia Tech could send them to
the ACC title game. Both teams
have plenty riding on this game.

While Techs offense has
shown to be potent through its
three-game win streak, it has yet
to be challenged by a formidable
defense. Both Pitt and UNC rank
towards the bottom of the ACC in
points allowed per game; beating
up on bad defenses doesnt ensure
that the Jackets can perform as
they have recently against a bet-
ter unit. That challenge is coming
this Saturday: Miamis defense
has proven to be among the top in
the conference and perhaps even
the nation. The Hurricanes are
allowing just 17 points per game,
good for No. 17 in the country.
Miamis defense usually performs
well against Techs triple option
due to their strong defensive line.
That being said, their defense is
relatively young and much of their
current defensive players knowl-
edge of the Tech offense comes
strictly from tape, not game time
so inexperience could be an
important factor going into Sat-
urday. For players facing the triple
option for the first time, the dis-
cipline necessary to foil various
reads can be difficult to sustain.
The Jackets need to find rhythm
in the passing game to balance the
ground game and meet Miamis
stout defense with an even more
impressive offense.

For Tech, the key to winning
will be coming out strong from
the start of the game. Though it
can be tough for a team to get
going on the road, Tech needs
to score early and stop Miami, as
the Hurricanes have struggled on
both sides of the ball in the first
half of games so far this season.
Time of possession will also be
key for Tech - if Tech can eat up
the clock as effectively as it did
against UNC, the Jackets will
limit Miamis opportunities to
score and give their defense plenty
of rest. If Tech can secure an early
lead to act as a cushion against
any halftime adjustments Miami
makes to score in the second half,
they can bring home the win.
As for Miami, the key to win-
ning is forcing turnovers. Given
that their offensive production
could be limited with the ques-
tions facing the Hurricanes
ground game, forcing fumbles
and interceptions will not only
stop Tech from scoring, but also
provide the Miami offense with
favorable field position to put
points on the board. As Tech has
struggled to secure the ball in
their games so far, the Miami de-
fense has a chance to control the
pace of the game by focusing on
the ball and forcing turnovers.
