Schuette Has Big Leads over
Calley in GOP Primary
Schuette 52% - Calley 13%
EAST LANSING, Mich. Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette (52%) leads Lt. Gov.
Brian Calley (13%) by almost 40% in a two-way race according to a statewide poll
commissioned by MIRS (Michigan Information Research Services) and conducted by Mitchell
Research Communications of likely voters in the August 2018 Republican Primary Election.
Thirty-six percent of the voters were undecided. The operator assisted survey of N=400 Likely
GOP Primary voters was conducted Sept.21-24, 2017 and includes both landline and cell
phones. It has a Margin of Error of + or 5% at the 95% level of confidence.

Bill Schuette is pulling away from Brian Calley. Schuette (84%) now has much higher
name identification than Calley (45%) and a much higher percentage of voters say they have a
favorable impression of Schuette (65%) than have a favorable impression of Calley (26%). This
huge lead in name ID translates directly to Schuettes lead, Steve Mitchell, president of Mitchell
Research & Communications said.

Schuettes lead grows even further when voters are told In 2016, Bill Schuette
endorsed Donald Trump for president. Brian Calley also endorsed Trump but he took away his
endorsement in October when comments Trump made about groping women became public.
Calley never did endorse after that. Now, President Trump has endorsed Bill Schuette for
Governor of Michigan. After hearing that information, Schuette (68%) expands his lead by 16
percentage points over Calley (13%) and the percentage of undecided voters drop from 36%-
19%.

It is very difficult to see a path to victory for Calley. He is in deep trouble, and that
trouble is increased dramatically by Trumps endorsement of Schuette and Calleys withdrawal
of his endorsement of Trump in October 2016. Eighty-four percent of the GOP Primary voters
approve of the job Trump is doing with 61% saying they strongly approve. Only 13%
disapprove while 3% are not sure. The President remains very popular with his base and that
high job approval gives Schuette a huge lead, Mitchell said.

Governor Snyder has a job approval of 80% but fewer voters (35%) say they strongly
approve of his job as opposed to Trump. Sixteen percent disapprove of the job the Governor is
doing while 5% are not sure.
According to the poll, in the trial ballot question asked before information on the Trump
endorsement is provided, Schuette leads statewide by 39% over Calley (52%-13%).

Among key demographics: (This information shows the percentages for the two
candidates, the rest of the voters are undecided.)

By gender:

Schuette leads with men (51%-12%) and with women (52%-13%).

By age:

Calley leads with 18-44 year olds (41%-18%) but Schuette leads with 45-64 year olds
(50%-17%) and with 65 and older voters (56%-8%).
The percentage of the voters in each age category surveyed is consistent with likely
turnout in the August 2018 GOP Primary Election.

By type of voting:

Schuette leads with both absentee (56%-6%) and Election Day (49%-17%) voters.

By Area:
