Use informal arguments to establish facts about the angle sum and exterior
angle of triangles, about the angles created when parallel lines are cut by a
transversal, and the angle-angle criterion for similarity of triangles. For
example, arrange three copies of the same triangle so that the sum of the three
angles appears to form a line, and give an argument in terms of transversals
why this is so.
Objective
Students will be able to determine angle relationships and measures when
parallel lines are cut by a transversal.
Materials
Parallel Lines Cut by a Transversal Worksheet
Projector and/or Document Camera (optional)
Procedure
Give students about 5 minutes to work through the puzzle on their own.
Have students work in pairs or small groups for about 10 more minutes.
Discuss as a large group. Heres my personal procedure:
I project the puzzle on the front board.
Then I call one student up to the board to Xill in 3 angles measures
that they know based on the information already Xilled in.
I ask a couple of different students to provide vocabulary words to
describe pairs of angle measures that were just added to the front
board.
Repeat until all angles measures have been discussed.
