Content Standard Addressed: S3L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the similarities
and differences between plants, animals, and habitats found within geographic regions (Blue Ridge
Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal Plains, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau) of Georgia.
Lesson idea implementation: This lesson is an introduction to Charles Darwin and some of his contributions
to current views on evolution and habitats. Students watch an entertaining, 5-minute video loaded with
information on Charles Darwins life and studies. Students then play a few games, like Sortify, that reinforced
their understanding of relationships between organisms and their environments. The printable activity sheet
shows how animals with beneficial traits are more likely to pass on their genes and evolve over generations.
This worksheet is also a good way to evaluate the students comprehension of the lesson.
The teacher can have BrainPop formulate a quiz to assess the students progress. The lesson can also lead into
activities reinforcing the students knowledge of the geographic regions of Georgia. To expand beyond the

classroom, a small field trip outside to search for evidence of how animals use traits to thrive in our local
habitat.
