The new Opel Insignia:
Front view.

6
Sporty yet understated
A new freshness characterises the frontal
styling of the Insignia. Seen directly from
the front, the wide stance is highlighted by
the stylishly integrated wheel arch exten-
sions. The smooth wrap-around profile, that
blends the light clusters, fog lamps and
grille into a fluid and dynamic structure, also
gives some idea of the effort that has
been expended on cutting air drag and
wind noise.

The lights themselves are defined by the

wing light signature. Over the lights
the surface is contoured, this contour then
defines the upper waistline. The high
sculptured relief of the bonnet blends
effortlessly into the A pillar structure.

Even the Opel logo has received attention,

with a more sculptured and higher quality
presence.

Other detail highlights:

New detail design for smooth headlight
clusters also maximises AFL and LED
efficiency.
More prominent radiator grille and
Opel logo treatment emphasising higher
quality image profile.
Wing graphic elements within and
below the light clusters give a wider,
deeper impression.
Lower air intakes and fog lamps are fully
integrated in the lower valence treatment
for a smoother and more premium first
impression.
Bonnet character lines create a deep
reaching symmetrical frontal aspect
New softer profile design for the
exterior mirrors.

Arguments
New, more elegant, self-confident
and purposeful first impression
Sculpted lines reflect more emphasis
on quality
Wide stance emphasises stability and
sportiness
Distinctive wing light signature

7
The new Opel Insignia:
Side view.

8
Self-confident and elegant
The first impression when
viewed from the side is the
coup-like sweep of the roof.
This flows effortlessly into the raised,
upper structure of the rear luggage cover.
This is probably the most easily visible
indication of the ultra-low, fuel-saving drag
coefficient (cd factor) of just 0.27, among
the best in class.

The moulded nature of the side styling,

which features a pronounced blade
shaped contour that runs from just behind
the front door seams into the lower
waistline and the sills, leaves a dynamic
impression of forward motion.

The shoulder/waistline also balances the

dynamics of the front and rear light clusters
and allows the perfect positioning of the
door handles. The overall impression is of
elegance, power, balance and proportion.

Other detail highlights:

Sculpted large-sized wheel arches
emphasise sporting nature
New alloy wheel range designed to
harmonise with sculpted side profile
Lower window line, waistline and sill
lines stylistically integrated for high
quality impression
Low stance, short overhangs for more
sporting impression
Chrome detailing of side window lines

Arguments
Fuel-saving cd factor of just 0.27,
among the best in class
Coup-like elegance
Dynamic proportion
Low sporting profile
Elegant new alloy wheel range

9
The new Opel Insignia:
Rear view.

10
Strong and impressive
As with the front, a fresh sense of style lifts
the quality perception of the Insignia rear
styling. Again the wing motif can be seen,
also the rear light clusters are logical counter-
weights to the front light clusters. In this
way a sense of continuous style, one that also
seems to reduce the overall bulk, unifies
and qualifies the whole vehicle.

As with the front and side, the muscular

treatment of the wheel arches, together
with the easily noticed width of the wheels
and tyres, proclaims self confidence,
stability and performance.

The wrap-around extension of the sill line

and the integration of the twin oval exhaust
pipes also reinforce this powerful statement.

Other detail highlights:

Distinctive and unique rear light clusters
Unification of upper and lower aero
dynamic forms through high-quality
design and logo elements
Distinctive wide and stable stance

Arguments
Aerodynamically fine tuned
Highly stylish with unique
signature lights
Wide powerful stance
High-quality design elements

11
The new Opel Insignia Sports Tourer:
Front and rear view.

12
High-performance space
All of the self-confidence, elegance and
flair that characterise the Insignia sedan
are immediately visible in the Sports Tourer.
From the front it has the same impressive
stance. From the rear it offers a whole new
perspective.

The rear hatch is fully sculpted to extend the

sporting lines. The waist level mounting of
the lights, wrap-around rear screen, chrome
Opel wing motif and Blitz, together with
wide track and roof spoiler, combine to make
a strong impression. The clean, rounded
treatment of the lower bumper valence and
sill meld effortlessly into this aerodynamic
treatment, adding further sophistication and
symmetry. The overall effect is to fully
justify the title Sports Tourer.

But the wrap-around and rounded tailgate

of the Sports Tourer is not just attractive,
it is intelligent in more ways than one. The
tailgate module is available with manual
operation on Insignia, Edition and Sport and
with power operation on Cosmo. The powered
tailgate can be remote-controlled from the
key or from a switch in the drivers door. To
avoid unintended damage, i.e. when parking
under a low ceiling, the opening height of
the power tailgate can be pre-programmed.

With the manual option the tailgate senses

when it is almost closed and the mechanism
further closes and secures it.

Arguments
Good looking and dominant front
and rear styling
Sophisticated effort-saving
power tailgate
Secure manual tailgate option

13
The new Opel Insignia Sports Tourer:
Side view.

14
Lithe and sleek
Too many estate cars lack charm in side
profile. Not the Opel Insignia Sports Tourer.
The coup-like lines have been smoothly
extended into the wrap-around tailgate in
a way that successfully emphasises the
fine original proportions.

The pronounced blade-shaped side mould-

ing, extending through the rear wheel arches,
gives additional sleekness to the extra
length. The lower window line lies directly
upon the elegantly upswept waistline,
again adding proportion to the additional
length. Integrated fins on either side of
the rear screen add to the impression of
sport and performance.

The result looks aerodynamic, which is only

to be expected, for the Sports Tourer was
thoroughly refined in the wind tunnel. The
roof rails, roof spoiler, the side fins and
even the final shape of the rear screen were
all refined to give the best possible aero-
dynamic performance, lowest wind noise
and a cd factor among the best in the class.

Arguments
Outstanding yet functional styling
As much luggage space as
previous model
Fuel-saving cd factor of just 0.299,
among the best in class

15
The new Opel Insignia:
Cockpit.

16
Driving space
Detailed attention to quality, ergonomics
and air control have lifted the Opel Insignia
into another world. Wrap-around design
that puts everything into the drivers reach
is a refined hallmark of the interior. Single
or dual-zone Electronic Climate Control keeps
the ambient temperature fine.

The new fully orthopedic ergonomic sports

seat adjusts 8 ways with 4-way lumbar sup-
port. Also, the adjustable seat extension
cushion delivers relaxing leg support. At the
top end perforated leather, with heating
and ventilation, fingertip electric operation
and memory bring the Opel Insignia into
the highest luxury category. But the manually
adjustable cloth-covered version provides
the same level of orthopedic support.

Other detail highlights:

Orthopedic certification for ergonomic
sports seats
Clear instrumentation with colour change
facility for Sport mode
Electronic Climate Control with algorithm
Premium Infinity Sound System availability
Navigation with USB connections, etc.
230-V power outlet

Arguments

The new Opel Insignia:
FlexRide chassis.

FlexRide (Adaptive Stability

Technology)
The heart of the FlexRide system
is the Continuous Damping
Control (CDC). It uses electronic sensors to
constantly monitor and control the suspen-
sion for optimum stability, driving satisfac-
tion and comfort. The system used on the
Opel Insignia is an advanced version of the
Vectra IDSPlus, it features larger diameter
(37 mm instead of 27 mm) gas-filled rear
shock absorbers and improved algorithms
for better efficiency.

As an integral part of FlexRide, together

with the speed-sensitive power steering,
CDC supports the personalisation of the
Sport mode and enables the adaptive
dynamics of the DMC system.

Sport/Tour modes
The Opel Insignia offers three distinct driving
modes. Selecting Sport fully optimises the
car for dynamic driving, tautening the sus-
pension and steering response and speed-
ing up the reaction of the accelerator and
the automatic transmission. The Tour mode
is optimal for long-distance cruising, deliver-
ing a perceptible increase in comfort.

When neither is selected the default setting

is Normal. In any case the chassis system
is constantly adapted to fit the various traffic
conditions, providing substantially more
comfort than a conventional chassis. No
matter which mode is chosen: the full
safety potential of the FlexRide chassis will
always instantly be activated when needed.

20
Drive Mode Control (DMC)
Drive Mode Control is based upon an ad-
vanced software module. This constantly
monitors all sensor input, all switch settings
and personalisation settings to achieve
optimal driving performance under all con-
ditions. It recognises eleven different
driving situations, for example cruising,
accelerating, corner acceleration and
braking, plus the three selectable modes
Sport, Tour and Normal.

The drivers style is then computed by the

dynamic driving index. If the driver is
performance-oriented this will be registered
and the DMC will react accordingly, select-
ing Sport settings as the upper performance
threshold is reached. But it is also reactive
to personalisation, so if the driver has turned
off the Sport mode for the CDC it will react
as if in Tour mode, except in emergency brak-
ing or accelerating situations when it will
instantly switch to Sport.

The result is a car which learns the drivers

preferred driving style and reacts accordingly.

Sport mode personalisation

By using the infotainment system menu, the
driver can specify exactly which functions go
into action when the Sport mode is activated.

Arguments
Increased safety due to
improved control
3 settings with perceivably
different characteristics
Full safety potential in all settings
More sporting feel at higher
performance levels
The Opel Insignia learns the
drivers preferences, working with
him for maximum satisfaction
The suspension and driving systems
of the Opel Insignia offer high levels
of personalisation

21
The new Opel Insignia:
Adaptive 4x4.

Advanced 4x4 technology

The system consists of a Power Take-off Unit
(PTU) from the transmission, a Rear Drive
Module (RDM) and the Torque Transfer Device
(TTD), also the electronic Limited Slip
Differential (eLSD). Power is transmitted to
the rear axle via a drive shaft, under
the control of the Torque Transfer Device.

The eLSD further allows torque vectoring

to each individual rear wheel as needed to
maintain stability and maximise traction.
The immediate benefits are better acceler-
ation feel, more active safety and an
exciting rear-wheel driving experience.

22
Adaptive 4x4
The Opel Insignia features state-
of-the-art all-wheel drive
technology. The dynamic com-
ponents include a Torque Transfer Device
(TTD) and an electronic Limited Slip Differ-
ential (eLSD) at the rear axle. Both are latest-
generation Haldex units and service-free.

Adaptive 4x4 is fully integrated with all the

other dynamic control systems of the Opel
Insignia. It therefore responds also more
sportily when the Sport mode is activated.

In on-demand situations the TTD can transfer

up to 100 per cent of the available torque
to the rear wheels, depending on the driving
conditions. In normal driving conditions
the traction is predominantly front-wheel
drive for fuel economy. However, when
circumstances demand, for instance in hard
acceleration or slalom conditions, the
power is intelligently apportioned as it is
required, for example 70 per cent rear
to 30 per cent front when cornering hard.

In Opel internal tests the Opel Insignia with

Adaptive 4x4 outperformed the Audi Quattro
over the slalom course.

Additional benefits include:

Engaged before start off for maximum
grip without front-wheel slip
On demand pre-emptive function
(does not wait for wheel slip detection)
Automatic front to rear torque transfer
under acceleration without waiting for
front wheel spin
Full integration with ABS, CDC and ESPPlus
Electronic Limited Slip Differential (eLSD)
sends torque to the individual rear wheels
as needed
Yaw damping effect for safer lane or
direction changes
High rear-wheel torque for sporting
driving feel

Arguments
Segment-leading 4x4 performance
High rear axle torque available for
superb handling and driving fun
Increased stability in all situations
Full integration with all other vehicle
dynamic systems
eLSD for torque vectoring on the
rear axle

The new Opel Insignia:
Active safety.

Adaptive Forward Lighting

(AFL)
Controlled by speed, steering
input and electronics, Opel
Insignias advanced AFL system automati-
cally selects from nine different headlight
patterns, each designed to provide optimum
illumination without dazzling other drivers.
The benefit: less stress, more safety.

Pedestrian Area Light: 030 km/h. Where

children play and speed is restricted,
the light spread is increased by 8 degrees
to each side enabling potential hazards
to be seen earlier and more clearly.
Town Light: 3055 km/h. Activated by the
speed of the car, AFL registers town lighting
and adjusts the main beams for a wider,
more urban-friendly symmetrical light spread
with reduced range.
Country Road Light: 55100 km/h. Speed
activated, this provides a wider and brighter
spread of light than normal low beams.
The 70 metre range allows hazards, animals
or pedestrians to be more clearly seen.
Highway Light: Over 100 km/h. Activated
by the steering sensor this provides a higher
beam for highways etc. The light range is
140 metres and light intensity automatically
increased from 35 watt to 38 watt.
Adverse Weather Light: Up to70 km/h.
Pedestrian Area Light Town Light Activated automatically by the rain sensor,
this shortens the left beam and increases the
brightness of the right hand beam, for safer,
better placed light on wet road surfaces.
High Beam with Assist: Automatically
switches the intensified high beams on/off
when another car ist detected, either
approaching or in front. Also functions on
country roads, making night driving
safer and more relaxed.
Dynamic Curve Light: The headlights
Country Road Light Highway Light swivel up to 15 degrees in either direction
in reaction to driving speed and steering
movement. Sport mode activates an even
quicker response.
Static Cornering Light: 040 km/h. Auto-
matically activated, this throws light up to
90 degrees in either direction for parking
or manoeuvring. Also activated for parking
and manoeuvring when reverse is selected.

attention of other road users without increas-

Opel Eye
Traffic Sign Recognition:
Mounted in the interior mirror
mounting, the wide angle front
camera recognises speed restriction signs,
then displays them in the central monitor.
The driver can then recall the info via steering
wheel control, until the restriction changes.
Unlike navigation systems with stored speed
restrictions, the system works in real time
so it is always current.

Lane Departure Warning: At over 60 km/h

the camera also recognises if the vehicle
crosses a traffic lane marking line without
the driver indicating. It then sounds an
audible warning and activates a warning
light in the rev counter. This also helps to
counter fatigue and temporary loss of
concentration.

Traffic Sign Recognition is confirmed to

properly operate with traffic signs that are
in-line with the Vienna Convention on Road
Signs and Signals. At the time of this publi-
cation, the following Central and Eastern
European markets are planned to have:
Full coverage as of launch: Bosnia and
Herzegovina, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia,
Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia,
Poland, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia,
Slovenia
Full coverage during the second half of
2009: Turkey, Bulgaria
Full coverage during 2010: Russia, Romania

Lane Departure Warning works properly on

roads with visible traffic lane marking lines
(side lines and dividing).

Arguments
AFL reduces driving stress and also
eliminates dazzle for oncoming traffic
Traffic Sign Recognition helps
protect the driving licence
Lane Departure Warning improves
highway safety and concentration

29
The new Opel Insignia:
Active safety.

Suspension
The basic suspension for the new Opel
Insignia is McPherson strut front and multi-
link rear. Gas-filled shock absorbers are
standard and weight has been reduced by
the extensive use of aluminium compo-
nents. For increased strength and precision
the subframe is hydroformed.

Advanced hydraulic engine mountings help

achieve the remarkably low noise and
vibration levels, lower suspension compo-
nents are aerodynamically formed to
help reduce fuel consumption.

Electronic Stability Program Plus (ESPPlus)

ESPPlus senses when the vehicle leaves the
drivers chosen path. The electronic control
system then applies the brakes or adjusts
the throttle as necessary to bring it back
under the drivers control. The current
state-of-the-art ESPPlus used in the Opel
Insignia does this in milliseconds with
little or no sensational awareness on the
part of the driver.

Brake features
4-channel ABS that works in harmony with
the ESPPlus means that the Opel Insignia
offers fade-free anti-lock braking under all
conditions. Oversize ventilated discs front
and solid discs rear offer an ideal balance
between feel and stopping power. There
is also a brake booster for added power in
emergency stopping situations. In addition
the Hydraulic Brake Fade Assist (HBFA) auto-
matically raises braking pressure to com-
pensate for possible brake fade in repeated
heaving braking situations.

An extra safety feature is the Brake Disc

Cleaning (BDC) system that periodically
removes disc contamination by applying
very light pressure so that the pads contact
the discs without generating any braking
effect. This keeps the brakes at peak effec-
tiveness, especially under wet conditions.

30
Warning functions
A new centrally located high definition screen
means that information such as check con-
trol, TPMS, on-board computer and optional
rear seat passenger seat-belt warnings are
prominently, clearly and conveniently visible.

For additional safety, both automatic hazard

warning lights and adaptable brake lights
are external warnings for other drivers.

Electrochromatic rear-view mirror

A familiar but desirable safety feature, the
electrochromatic mirror, uses sensors to
detect following light at night, measures it
and adjusts the brilliance of the reflection
to remove disturbing glare. To aid parking
the mirror automatically returns to full
reflectivity when reverse gear is selected.

To demonstrate the dimming function it is

only necessary to cover the forward light
sensor with a finger and then shine a flash-
light into the mirror. The mirror will auto-
matically darken.

Arguments
The basic active safety features
of the Opel Insignia are both
more comprehensive and more
clearly displayed

The new Opel Insignia:
Active safety.

Advanced Park Pilot

The Advanced Park Pilot can detect a suita-
ble parking space and then guide the
Insignia into it, using visual instructions dis-
played on the central screen.

Driving by a row of cars with 30 km/h max.

in a distance of up to 1.80 m, the special
front sensors measure the parking slot size.
If a feasible slot is detected, the driver is
informed to stop the car. Both written and
visible graphic indications for steering
angle and directions are then given to the
driver.

The result is perfect parallel parking, even

in confined spaces. The Advanced Park
Pilot is a major sales advantage for nervous
parkers or customers up-sizing from
smaller cars.
Special front side sensor detects parking slot
In contrast to fully automatic parking systems,
where the driver must release the steering
wheel, the driver always stays in full control
with Insignias Advanced Park Pilot. Also
instead of 1.40 m minimum manoeuvring
space that most fully automatic systems
need, the Advanced Park Pilot only requires
1 m in addition to the length of the car.

Front and rear sensors survey parking process

32
Electric parking brake with Hill Start Assist
Another innovation on the Insignia is the
electric parking brake. Touch-operated, it
offers both increased parking security
and decreased driver effort. Additionally, in
combination with Hill Start Assist, which
prevents rearwards rolling until the accelerator
is used, it ensures smooth effortless hill
starting for increased comfort and safety.

Trailer Stability Program

Sensor-controlled, the Trailer Stability Pro-
gram senses when the trailer begins to yaw
or loses cohesion and activates the vehicle
brakes to compensate. The towing hitch can
be easily folded away when not in use. This
adds a lot of convenience compared to the
detachable hitches.

Argument
Innovative systems to assist the driver

33
The new Opel Insignia:
Passive safety.

Safety structure
High tensile steels, rigidity, deformability,
strategically placed crash boxes and impact
load paths all work together to ensure
that the new Opel Insignia offers one of the
strongest safety structures on the market.

The use of high-strength steel in the rigid

safety cage means it offers one of the largest
crash protection survival spaces in this class.

The surrounding crumple zones and the hol-

low front aluminium bumper absorb energy in
low impact crashes, so saving money on
repair costs. In higher impacts the energy is
diffused along the front subframe toward
the A pillars along controlled paths. The side
impact beams are mounted diagonally to
increase their effectiveness by maximising
the combined strengths of the B pillars,
the side sills and the floor cross members.

In effect this diffuses the impact across a

much wider area, so lessening the immediate
effect. The overall result is one of total
in-depth safety and an NCAP 5 star rating.

Airbags
Wrap-around protection from airbags has
been maximised by ensuring optimal
positioning and deployment. The dual front
airbags are dual-powered, so avoiding
injuries caused by too rapid inflation.

The passenger airbag can be deactivated

when a child seat is used on the front seat.
The thorax and pelvis side airbags guard
against both side impact and intrusion. In
the rear compartment side airbags can be
specified to augment the full-length curtain
airbags. This attention to detail may never
be needed, but the fact that it is there lifts
the Opel Insignia right to the forefront in
this important sales area.

The seat belts are height-adjustable and
feature load limiting to avoid belt injuries.
The major benefit is that working in unison
with the airbags and the ramped seats they
control the movement of the body under
impact, enabling more pelvis restraint, but
allowing enough upper-body movement to
maximise the effectiveness of the airbags.

Storage and convenience

All car buyers have become aware of storage
and convenience. The Opel Insignia offers
them a fully comprehensive range of storage
and stowage, all ergonomically easy to
reach and generously sized. More than that,
for those who want to use their computer,
TV or other device, the rear storage bin in
the floor console also includes a 230-V
power outlet.

Elsewhere there are seat back map pockets,

door pockets, a drivers storage bin, cup
holders front and rear and a centre rear arm-
rest storage space.

One extra thoughtful touch is the drivers

door mounted boot or tailgate release.

Here is the summary of storage facilities:

Luggage compartment
With a load volume of 530 l (5-door) the
Opel Insignia offers one of the most
capacious luggage compartments in class.
The capacity is certainly enough for
more than a holiday weekend, also it can
take care of all business and leisure needs.
The folded 60/40 rear seat back allows
an increased load volume of up to 1,475 l,
when folding the headrests can stay in place.

The boot lid of the new Opel Insignia can

be opened by remote control or the touch
pad, which is integrated in the Opel logo.
It swings automatically to the full-open
position on the 4-door Opel Insignia and is
unlocked on the 5-door Opel Insignia.

The low load floor further eases the loading/

unloading. A side compartment in the
boot keeps smaller items easily at hand,
whilst another compartment under the
load floor conceals items that are needed
only occasionally.

39
The new Opel Insignia Sports Tourer:
Versatility.

Flexible load space

The deep-opening rear hatch and low
load height means that the Insignia Sports
Tourer is convenient and easy to load.
It is also simple and light to configure. In a
few seconds the 60/40 split rear seats
feature load through and fold without dis-
mounting of the headrests.

To protect both the cargo and the interior

there are four lashing eyes. In addition,
even with the rear seats occupied, 540 l
unobstructed volume ensures there is
enough luggage space for business, leisure
or family.

Power tailgate
The powered tailgate automatically opens
and closes, driven by a hydraulic pump.
This can be activated by the outside handle
switch to open it or by pushing the shut
face switch to close. It can also be controlled
from the key or from a switch in the drivers
door. Additionally it can also be manually
opened and closed.

Further benefits of the powered tailgate

are that it comes with a dual function
obstacle detection system. This features
sensors around the edges of the tailgate
and also with a counter motion sensor. If
any obstacle to the tailgate sensed by
either system it immediately reverses the
direction to avoid the obstacle. The elec-
tronic control also allows pre-programming
to avoid hitting the garage roof by press-
ing the shut face switch for three seconds,
or stopping the tailgate in any position by
pressing a switch.

Special storage facilities

The tyre repair set is easily accessible in a
compartment in the right-hand wall of the
luggage compartment, the warning triangle
and first-aid kit are accommodated in the
cladding of the tailgate and are thus to hand
at all time.

Ergonomics
The cockpit of the VW Passat is logically
organised and good to operate. Perhaps the
surface quality is not what it should be,
especially the soft touch finishes which show
signs of wear very quickly.

The longer lateral adjustment of the front

seats gives the Opel Insignia a clear advan-
tage over the Passat, in addition the height
control is electrical from the base model up-
wards in contrast to the Passat.

The amount of interior space is largely com-

parable with the Opel Insignia, although
in order to provide extra luggage room the
rear legroom has been compromised.

Ergonomics
The cockpit of the Ford Mondeo is visibly
aimed to create a high quality impression.
However, testers have found negative as-
pects to various major components, for ex-
ample the overcrowding of steering wheel
controls on various models while the navi-
gation screen is difficult to read in strong
sunlight. Also the over-complicated menu
structure has been criticised.

The space available in the Mondeo is com-

parable to that of the Opel Insignia. How-
ever, due to the longer wheelbase of the
Mondeo, it appears to have more front leg-
room, this is compensated by the longer
travel of the front seats in the Opel Insignia.

Ergonomics
The cockpit of the C5 offers many typical

controls demand practise or driver familiarity.

The seats are comfort-oriented, giving little

lateral support. Also the new Opel Insignia
offers more flexibility in length adjustment,
while unlike the C5 the height adjustment
