1.1 Scope
The meter is designed within the ACE 5000 family and is identified as 5.1 type.

The ACE 5.1 is an asymmetrical direct connected 3 phase 4 wire static meter for low voltage applications. The
meter covers current ranges from 5A up to 120A providing active and reactive energy measurements according
to class 1 IEC 61036 and class 2 IEC 61268 respectively and showing either one or the other through the
calibration LED. The meter measures active and reactive energies, maximum consumed energies, power,
currents and voltages.
The meter integrates a Maximum Demand Register as well as an internal Real Time Clock managing a Time
Switch up to 8 rates for 3 different energy types over 4 seasons with 4 different Day Profiles through 72 special
days, plus the capability of automatically changing between Summer and Winter time. The ACE 5.1 carries Load
Management features through up to two relay outputs, has permanent electrical readout output feature or the
traditional DIN S0 pulse-output facility.
It is designed with a back-up power supply carrying a super capacitor or a replaceable lithium battery. Automatic
or manual End Of Billing holding one or more historical billing data. All meter data is stored in an Electrically
Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM), which remains intact even in the event of long total
power losses (over 10 years).
The meter carries a LCD where the information displayed obeys to DLMS/COSEM identification code table or to
codes set by the customer. An optical port communicating at 9600bps with the capability of being sealed is
available allowing IEC61107 readout and DLMS/COSEM read/write. The meters are fully programmable through
a dedicated Windows software application.

1.3.3 Direct Connected Terminal & Connections

ACE 5.1s carries a VDE connection arrangement (asymmetrical terminals) of 120A or 80A of maximum current,
with an internal or external IP link (common-point).

3 Phase 4 Wire meter connections

The main terminals accept wiring of 16mm, 35mm and use 2 screws.

Note : This 120A VDE DC meter variant is not fully compliant with DIN 43-857
specification (non compliance stands for the neutral terminals pitch of 10 mm
instead of 9 mm and terminal bores is greater than 6.5 mm). The reason
comes from the DIN standard itself, specified for a 60A meter.

The overall range of meters has been designed and constructed in order to avoid introducing any danger in
normal use and under normal conditions ensuring:
personal safety against electric shock
personal safety against effects of excessive temperature
protection against spread of fire
protection against penetration of solid objects, dust and water
protection against projecting particles in case of internal default.
All parts, which are subjected to corrosion under normal working conditions, are effectively protected.
The material of which the meter is made passes the Glow Wire test given by IEC 695-2-1 :

1.3.9 Opening Cover Detector


As an extended antifraud feature, the OPCODE (OPening COver DEtector) detects the opening of the sealed
terminal cover at any time, i.e., even if the meter is completely powered down.
When the mains are powered after a tamper event, while it was not powered, the meter will detect the tamper
and increase the internal counter with 1 opening cover event. While powered, the device detects the number of
times the terminal cover has been opened keeping a 1 second reset gap between two frauds.
The OPCODE device is checked every 200ms and in case of fraud detection it is confirmed 200ms later. The
"OPCODE tamper index" is increased and the device is reset. The "OPCODE tamper index" registers up to 255
events setting an overflow bit in the status word if the index rolls over to 0. This bit can be reset using the push
buttons or the IR communication port.

2.1 Power Supply Unit
The ACE 5.1 meter is designed with a fully redundant 3 phase 4 wire power supply, for 50, 60Hz 10% network
frequency with nominal voltage of 127V up to 230V in 3 or 4 wires connection types.
Withstands the inversion of one phase and neutral.
2 wires from the 4 possible are mandatory for product operation.
Design Note : The meter has 3 different qualified network voltages (220, 230 and
240V), however the reference network voltage used in all calculations
dimensioning the meter is 230 V (Vn).
Power consumption:
The maximum overall consumption per phase of the apparatus under the reference conditions is :

2.4 Real Time clock (acc. to IEC 61038)


All real timing functions within the meter, like rate changes or special day management, among others, are
derived from the integrated real time clock (RTC). Its source is internal and based on a 32.768 kHz crystal.
This meter is equipped with a small back-up power supply, and optionally either a lithium battery or a super-
capacitor. Without the extra energy sources the auxiliary power circuit holds the RTC working for at least 15
minutes. In case of the super-capacitor, the RTC is maintained at least 7days of continuous total supply outage.
If the lithium battery is chosen, it will maintain the RTC up to 3 years.

As the crystal drift is not linear over the temperature range and time, the internal clock source accuracy is better
than 15 seconds per month at 23C, and 6 minutes per year over the full temperature range.
Time is possible to be set (re-synchronised) with 1 second accuracy [hh,mm,ss], by a programming operation
using the IR port or directly using the sealed push-button on the meter cover.
The meter verifies the consistency of Date & Time programmed in the meter and rejects not valid ones.

2.4.1 Battery
The meter may be equipped with a replaceable lithium battery, which is accessed by a battery holder placed on
the front of the meter. This battery holder can be sealed and therefore its access possible only after breaking it.
The battery carries the following characteristics :

The battery is modified into an assembly to fit meters battery holder. The battery holder provides a space to put
a sticker to indicate battery date of change.

A battery failure indication is shown in the display when the battery capacity decreased by about 10% or when it
is absent.

2.4.2 Super Capacitor


The Super capacitor is placed on the meters bottom board and not replaceable. It assures a minimum capacity
of 7 days in case of continuous total supply outage with a recharging time no more than 12 hours.

2.5 Human Machine Interface


The Human Machine Interface is the communication mean between the end user and the meter without
interposed devices. The User Interface is made of two push buttons and one LCD Display.

2.5.1 LCD overview


As described earlier the meter carries a Liquid Crystal Display, which is organised in 3 different areas with a total

2.5.2.4 Alarm Mode

If an overvoltage is detected on RMS Voltages per phase (overvoltage threshold configurable), the message
"ALArM V" is displayed. 10 second after the overvoltage disappears, the LCD comes back to the previous state
in Display mode.

2.5.3 Metrology LED


The LED designed to emit the metrology pulses is visible from outside, with the meter in operating position.
The nominal characteristics of this LED are as follows:
luminance (10 mCd)

Angle of vision 15.
Convergence is obtained for a distance between 0 and 5 mm from the front panel.
A metallic part on the meter case is used to hold a reading cell by magnetic attraction. Pre-centering exists on

3 METROLOGY
3.1 Metrology Indications
The ACE 5.1 is a Class1 Active energy meter according to IEC61036 and a Class2 Reactive energy meter
according to IEC61268.

3.1.1 Metrology principle


The apparatus is equipped with 3 special design current transformers, internally called MCT (Mutual Current
Transformer), providing the AD converter with an analogue current ratio.
Samples read on the meter elements, which are not modified by calculation, are (V1, V2, V3, I1, I2, I3) and
permit, among others, the calculation of active, reactive and apparent energy quantities, as well as the power
factor and RMS values.
Voltage and current signals are sampled and processed to be compensated, equalised, calibrated and phase
corrected in order to give final filtered voltage and current values.

3.1.2 Metrology modes


Two different energy measurement modes are available in the meter.

Bi-directional Mode - concerns (P+, P-, Q+) and is represented by the symbol

Unidirectional Mode - concerns (P+, Q+, Q-) and is represented by the symbol

IMPORTANT :
As shown above, although the export reactive energy is selected, leaving only one
active energy register, the meter still measures the export active energy but this value
is saved only when in anti-fraud mode.

3.1.3 Metrology LED constant and duration


The metrology LED has been designed to display metrology luminous pulses (blinks) for active or reactive
energy, visible from outside, with the meter in operating position.
The LED transmits active or reactive energy pulses depending on configuration. The led is mainly used for
meter calibration. And its nominal pulse length is 10 ms for ON state and 10 ms for OFF.
Meter constant corresponds to the electrical energy measured between two consecutive pulses.
No problem of saturation exists with the pulses, even in case of heavy consumption.

3.1.3.1 LV/DC Metrological Led constant

Standard pulse rates: 500 - 1000 2000 pulses/kWh (Configurable with AIMS)
In LCD Test mode the pulse rate could be increased to 5000 pulses/kWh

3.1.3.2 LV/CT Metrological Led constant

3.1.4 Pulse Output


During a cut -off, a saving into the EEPROM of pulses which have to be emitted is done, in order to retransmit it
just after power-up. In case of saturation, the LED pulses and the pulse of the pulse output device will no longer
be synchronised.
The Pulse emitter device can be active or inactive. The selection of pulse transmission (active or not) is carried
out via IR communication. The pulse output device is exclusive with the Data Output (see 6.1.3).

3.1.5 Instantaneous values


Rms currents and voltages
Rms Current per phase and Rms Voltage per phase are calculated from an accumulation of squared Current
and Voltage samples between 1 second tops, being square-rooted during the same time period.
Active Power
The meter calculates every second the instantaneous Active Power quantity W. The Active Energy calculated at
the sampling frequency (USAMPLE * ISAMPLE) is accumulated in the Active Power register every second
providing an average instantaneous Active Power every second once divided by the number of samples over

the period. Its sign is used to determine the active energy direction (import or export) and its absolute value is
used to determine if the energy status is BLOCKED or STARTED.
Average Apparent Power
Measurement of the RMS Apparent Power is carried out every second using the RMS arithmetic method : the
Apparent Power VA comes from the multiplication between Urms and Irms.
Power Factor
The power factor is calculated every second per phase and aggregate.
Pfagg = kWagg / kVAagg (P / S )
The resolution of the calculation is 0,01. The calculation uses active power signed and apparent power
unsigned.
The sign of the Power Factor is the sign of Active Power.
Phase sequence (V 1/V2, V1/V3, V2/V3)
This function returns the voltage to voltage angle according to the different connection types. From these angles
are deduce the phase sequence. When the phase sequence is wrong, a bit is raised in the status word. As soon
as the right connection is restored, the bit is reset .

precision of one unit ( 1x100).

The values measured by the Maximum Demand Registers are power averages determined over a
chosen number of Sub-Intervals with a selected time duration:

In case of exceptional events (tariff change, end of billing, contract change, power down or clock setting (except
DST event)), the ongoing integration period is stopped. Depending on a choice made by a programmed
parameter through the IR communication port, the calculation of the last integration period can be neglected or
computed theoretically as if the integration period was complete.
After these events (power up instead of power down), a new integration period begins: the time between the
event and the end of the integration period synchronised on the RTC is considered as a complete integration
period.

One of two maximum energy types could be managed depending of the customer order (once the type
defined, it is not possible to change afterwards either with Push buttons or with AIMS).
The possible types are Active Import (P+) or Apparent Import (S+).

3.2.3 Maximum Registers


The maximum registers report the maximum values over an averaged sliding period of time, this
period of time is called Filter Time Constant and can take the following values: 20 seconds, 5 or 10
minutes.
The averaged Current values per tariff are used for Load Management ( see 4.4).
The aim of this sliding window is to simulate the thermal behaviour of a circuit-breaker allowing the
detection of fraud to the subscribed currents. These values are reset to zero via the IR communication
port or using the push buttons.
The meter is also equipped with a special memory case where the maximum voltage values per phase
are saved..
Max.I1/2/3 A - Maximum current per phase measured selected time window.

4 TARIFFS
4.1 Definition & ACE 5.1 Time Switch:
A tariff, or rate, is a well-determined period of time during which a set of registers is enabled and used for billing
purposes. The meter carries only one living tariff at a time, applicable to all billing registers, being able to change
it 8 times every 24-hour period.
The ACE 5.1 is equipped with 8 tariffs that can be used to set 4 different day profiles. Each day profile will then
be used to define the meter's behaviour through 7-week days, defining a week profile. There are 4-week profiles
available, one for each season (therefore 4 seasons).
72 special days are available which are defined through the set of generic dates. These dates are defined either
by a year less fixed date (ex: 01_MAY) or by a generic sliding date (ex: First Sunday of November).
The group of Timse Switch options is defined as a calendar.
Able to support a calendar from 01_JAN_2000 to 31_DEC_2099, the apparatus carries the following functions:
Leap year every year that can be divided by 4 is a leap year. When internal time of the meter is
31_DEC_2099 at 23h59mn59sec, then Date & Time restart from 01_JAN_2000 at
0h0mn0sec and corresponding bit in the RTC Status word is set. Leap year
Management is not configurable.
Day Light Saving Time a total of 16 years could be handled with 32 programmed dates. It is
also possible to define generic dates. 2 DST adjustments can be defined each
year; one advance & one reverse in any order. In the same configuration, for each
year, advance & reverse DST adjustment shall be always in the same order and
contains therefore a total of 32 DST adjustments.
Current and Latent calendar the future calendar allows a change of time switch behaviour after
a configurable date. (This feature is particularly useful when an utility wants to
programme a simultaneous calendar change over a wide meter population)
Each tariff can have a different subscribed current. These subscribed current per tariff can be used by the
utilities for billing purposes as it establishes a current threshold. This threshold is responsible for the Load
Management, i.e., the control of up two relay outputs (see 4.4 Load Management).
Besides the control by current threshold, the relays could also be controlled by the daily tariff changes (maximum
8 per day).

4.1.1 Power-Up
In case of a mains failure the meter re-synchronises the calendar at power-up with the current Date & Time and
sets the state of the meter (Tariff rate, Relays & Excess Demand Flag) according to the current Date & Time.
At power-up, if Date & Time is lost, the RTC restart 01 January 2000, in addition a flag is set, allowing blinking of
time displayed on LCD.

4.1.2 Power-Down
While power is down the meter continues to count Date & Time, within its auxiliary power supply limits. No other
actions are performed. (See 2.3 for definition on Real Time Clock)

4.1.3 Precision on RTC setting


Depending on the configuration, the format of the available RTC information on the Display, will be either on a
24h or 12h format (plus AM/PM).

4.2 Contract change


A contract is the name given to the set of up to 8 tariffs, or rates, agreed between the utility and the final client. A
contract change can only be performed through the IR communication port using AIMS 5000. It allows for a
given pre-programmed Time Switch to limit or extend the tariffs used.
When the contract change is processed, an automatic EOB is performed.

4.3 End of Billing (E.O.B.)


The End Of Billing orders are given either by the IR communication port, using the push button or through the
pre-programmed internal calendar.
Two types of EOB could be performed (configurable by the customer with AIMS 5000)
"Cumulative" mode: Copy of the billing registers per tariff and total into the corresponding registers

"Hybrid" mode: Copy of the billing registers per tariff and total into the corresponding registers and reset of
the billing registers per tariff.

The internal calendar carries up to 12 year-less End Of Billing dates (day / month) permitting yearly roll-over and
it occurs by default at 00:00:00 hours.
Note: If a power-off masks more than one End of Billing event, only one End of Billing will be generated at
power-up.
Note:
For a matter of security, specially thinking on manual meter reading events,
the meter prevents two End Of Billing orders within the same half-hour (30
minutes). If by any chance two successive EOB orders were given too close,
and no energy had been registered, the data of at least one historical set of
registers would have been lost.

4.4 Load Management


Load Management (dynamic load management or load shedding) is a functionality that generates actions
directly on the output circuits (relays). As soon as averaged RMS current (see 3.2.3) of one of the 3 phases is
above the subscribed current in use (the current threshold chosen per tariff - 4.1), an excess of consumption is
detected. The relays are then switched to a pre-defined position (configurable with AIMS).
The meter has two output circuits delivered as options.
The output circuits are equipped with single direction, single-pole electric-control cut-off equipment. These
controls lead to stable states able to support currents up to 5A and 250V.
The actions over the relays are made through the tariff change and through the control of the consumed current
by the load connected to the meter
As well as to the hysteresis control values, explained below. The hysteresis avoids the relays to switch on & off
too many times when the averaged current value is around the subscribed current. The management of the load
through the evaluation of its current threshold is prior to the tariff.
An icon is set and erased on the display depending of the status of the over-current.
The hysteresis values are defined in the Configuration programme and loaded into the meter through the optical
port.
The example below represents the averaged current of a phase and the state of a relay when the hysteresis
values are crossed.

Each output circuit is able to carry out 60 000 operations (30 000 closings and 30 000 openings) under
the following conditions:
* Imax under 250 V, 50 Hz on a resistive circuit with constant value,
* Imax/2 under 250 V, 50 Hz, on an inductive circuit with a power factor equal to 0.4.
Undervoltage
The output circuits do not cause faulty operation under the sole effect of the disappearance of the
network voltage, or upon its re-establishment.

5 DIAGNOSTIC AND SURVEY


The following exploitation data are intended to provide information to ease ACE 5000 maintenance and
exploitation and failure diagnostic.

5.1.1 ParameterSetChecksum
This register contains a 16bit checksum of all the customer configuration data set. It avoids reading the whole
configuration set to check if it is the correct one programmed in the meter.

5.1.2 ProgrammingCounter
This register counts the number of programming attempts from IR port and from the user interface. The
maximum capacity of the register is 65500. When it reaches this limit, it stays at this value even if another
programming action happens. This register cannot be reset.

5.1.3 ReverseFlowCounter
The number of export transits is registered in a register with a maximum capacity of 65500. This register cannot
be reset and when it reaches its maximum value, it stays there even if a new reverse flow occurs.

5.1.4 BillingPeriodCounter
The number of billing periods is registered with a maximum capacity of 255. This register cannot be reset and
when it reaches its maximum value, it stays there even if new billing period occurs.

5.1.5 Terminal Cover Opening Counter


This register counts the opening number of the sealed terminal cover. The maximum capacity of the register is
255 (1 byte), After it reaches this values, the next opening cover event brings this register back to 0, and a fraud
register overflow bit (erasable) is indicated on the status word. This register cannot be reset.

5.1.6 CutOffCounter
This register counts the cut off numbers. The maximum capacity of the register is 255 (1 byte), After it reaches
this values, the next cut off brings this register back to 0, and a fraud register overflow bit (erasable) is indicated
on the status word. This register cannot be reset.

5.1.7 StatusWord
The standard status word provides the following information

5.1.8 Check Reading register


This data available on LCD is a signature of the active import energy register used in the current contract, which
allows the utility to prevent billing tampering in case or "manual" reading.

6 COMMUNICATIONS
6.1 IR communication port :
The communication is the mean, which gives access both to the meters exploitation data and to its configuration
data. The meter carries one full communication protocol, DLMS/COSEM (IEC 62056) with connection mode E of
IEC61107, and a Flag (IEC 61107) data read-out capacity.
The remote access to the meter is made through an infrared optical port based on the flag protocol IEC 61107.
This port is situated beneath the liquid crystal display on the left hand side. It is equipped with a metallic part to
hold a reading cell by magnetic attraction (pre-centering exists).
All of the technical and functional characteristics of the local communication link are according to [6]. COSEM is
a multi layered protocol, including physical, data-link, application layer. COSEM by a formal definition of data
type (COSEM objects) and a non-ambiguous data identification (OBIS Code) guarantee interoperability on a lot
of metering data.

6.1.3 DATA BUS OUTPUT


The Data Bus Output is situated on the right hand side of the meter cover and is exclusively set by the
programming software (AIMS 5000) as a Pulse Output or a Serial Data Output.
This feature allows to read locally or remotely a configurable set of data (Via AIMS). Indeed once configured in
D.B.O. mode the meter send always the data refreshed as soon as their content changed without any costly
system.

6.2 Local Reading

6.2.1 Principle
The Data Bus Output allows to get meter data from the RS232 port of a PC. The connection is done through a
simple interface (PC DBO Interface) using a twisted pair, screwed in terminals on the meter side, and ended by
a SubD9 connector including hardware adaptor.
The data can be simply read using Hyperterminal, such as shown below or by a specific application for post
processing .

According to the configuration, the data readout set is composed by x lines, each line contents the data identifier
on 4 ASCII characters followed by the data value between brackets; the data value includes the numerical value
and the corresponding unit if significant).

7 INSTALLATION
The following procedure is recommended in case of a first installation of ACE 5000.

7.1 Preliminary verifications before the meter is powered up


Warning : the ACE 5000 measurement circuit wiring diagram is non-symetrical VDE. It is important to verify that
the measurement circuits are correctly wired to the meters terminal block.

The pulse outputs is a "low level" type and so it is important to verify that no voltage greater than 30 Volts is
connected to these terminals.

7.2 Battery connection [optional]


The battery has an equivalent life time of three years accumulated power interruptions. The battery is
disconnected in all new meters. The battery must be connected just before the first power up sequence but not
prematurely since this will unnecessarily reduce the batterys life time.

7.3 LCD testing and Date and Time Setting


According to 2.5.2.2

7.4 Battery replacement [Optional]


The battery has an equivalent life time of three years accumulated power interruptions and a natural life time of
10 years. Th e non-fatal battery error is displayed when 80% of the equivalent life time has been used or when
the natural life time end date has been exceeded or when the terminal voltage falls below 2V.
It is possible to change the battery without altering the meter data.
Once the battery has been changed then the battery natural life time end date must updated under the
battery gate.
