Highly Precise 3D Robot Vision With Seam Inspection Using RGS Sensor
Technology

For seam seals with visible seams on automotive body parts, both 3D robot vision as well as seam
inspection can be accomplished using a single sensor in an image processing system. This leads to a
significant reduction in cost and an increase in the quality of the respective applications.

The Robot Guidance Sensors (RGS) by ISRA VISION ensures

exact three-dimensional measuring of seams and determination
of their positions in spatial coordinates with a high level of
precision. The data provide for exact robot guidance along the
geometry of a component. Specifically worth mentioning when it
comes to the RGS sensors: Along with the width, the position
and misplacements, the height of the seams and the quality of
the surface can also be determined. At the same time, a high
level of flexibility and cost effective automation during
automotive design is guaranteed, which leads to cost savings
and an increase in the product's quality.

The sensors can also be utilized when placing particularly demanding visible seams, for example near the door
seam, in the trunk area or the hood of the engine and achieve exact tolerances of +/- 0.1 mm.

Based on 3D Form Matching

Because of their compact design, the sensors can easily be integrated into existing equipment. The positioning
features are determined using sensors via multiline projection based on 3D form matching. Comparable to the
LED projection method, an arbitrary number of lines can be projected onto the object being measured. This
way, a complete and robust 3D surface mock-up is possible in this way. The sensors are so compact and
flexible that they can even perform reliably in hard to reach places irrespective of the surface types and the
color of the body part.

Highest Possible Precision for Visible Seams

Sealing visible seams in the area of doors requires the

highest possible precision. As an example, nozzles
must be guided precisely in the door seam as the
application is performed when the door is closed or
even partially opened. The RGS sensor attached to
the robot not only performs the task of robot vision
based on the exact 3D positioning definition, but also
inspects the visible seam directly after the application
has been completed.

The image is acquired and the optical measuring

systems are analyzed very quickly. The teaching
process is simple. Interfaces are provided for all
popular robot control systems. The sensors can be
installed easily and in no time at all. They are identified by their high level of system stability and linearity.

Highly Efficient Solutions

Along with the number of technical advantages the RGS sensor
has to offer, the ability to roved highly efficient solutions in a
wide array of applications is very important to ISRA VISION.
For roof seams, the sensor has already shown proven
capabilities in some applications of portable robot guidance as
well as in 3D positioning of the entire roof in combination with
the proven software EASI in-process, even additional
software functions can be used. In the meantime there are even
initial installations for door seam applications.

The collected application expertise included in ISRA VISION

software facilitates the seamless integration of sensors in the
ongoing production processes. Extensive analysis can be
performed on the PC. The calculation of the required
parameters is based on technically well-developed methods and algorithms.
