Instructional Design Plan

Client Information
Kayon McFarlane is a 7th grade math teacher in the Henry County School system.
Her email is kayon.mcfarlane@henry.k12.ga.us.

Instructional Problem
Ms. McFarlane expressed to me her concerns with her students understanding integer rules. She told
feels that the students need a visual diagram to help them decide when to use the different rules. She
told me that she gives the students all of the rules but she needs it to be more organized so that the
students can decide what rule to use without her help.

Instructional Model
The instructional design model used in this lesson is Mayer's Theory of Multimedia Learning and
the Duel Coding method. With Mayer's theory, I used the multimedia principle and the spatial
contiguity principle because my images are paired with the text with appropriate spacing. I also
used the coherence principle by not incorporating unrelated images in my infographic and my comic
strip. Finally, I used the Duel Coding method by incorporating images with text. I did this in my
infographic by having examples and I also used it in my comic with the visual backgrounds.

Redesigned Lesson
The redesigned lesson starts with the rules of how to add and subtract int egers. Mrs. McFarlane
would previously give students notes on each rule. To redesign the lesson, we decided to give the
students a comic to read to introduce the concept. The comic gives the student a real -world example
on how to use integers. Mrs. McFarlane can also ask probing questions about the comic such as
what other math questions could they come up with from the comic. The class can take an at school
field trip around the school to explore the different ways integers can be used in their daily life.
After completing the comic, Mrs. McFarlane can proceed with the lesson with a graphic organizer.
The graphic organizer will allow students to ask themselves questions about the equation which will
help them decide what rule to use. Once students understand how to use the graphic organizer, Mrs.
McFarlane can have her students use the Piktochart website to have students create their own
graphic organizer on how to multiply and divide integers. With this activity, students will be able to
effectively understand how use the visual aid presented to them along with creating their own visual
representations. The final part of the lesson, students can create their own comic about using
integer rules in the real-world. They would have to create a visual and dialog that matches the
content appropriately. This will help students organize their thoughts through text and visuals.

Methods to Evaluate
To evaluate the lesson, Mrs. McFarlane will use a rubric to grade the graphic organizer the students
created along with the comic strip that they have created. The rubric will include 4 areas on a 4
point scale per area. The four areas include: correct content, effective and appropriate use of visuals,
organization and appropriate formatting. I think these artifacts are the best solutions for this
problem because the prompt creation. According to Frey and Fisher (2008), " creating images serve
three functions: fostering understanding, retaining information, and monitoring for meaning."

Reflection
After completing this assignment, I am now able to effectively use and teach lessons that
incorporate visual and media literacy. This was a great lesson that I can a lso use in my class to help
my 8th grade math students review their integer concepts. In this exercise, I was able to analyze a
problem and create a solution using visual resources. Within this lesson I was able to apply my
skills of learning about comics and my research on infographics to help me create an amazing lesson
for my client to use in the upcoming school year with her students. Some of my challenges with this
assignment was creating the comic strip because I had to effectively explain a math con cept within
six squares. I think keeping the dialog short and informative was also a challenge. My favorite part
of the assignment was creating the infographic. I like creating graphic organizers that give visual
pathways to help students understand a concept. It allows them to see the bigger picture of complex
ideas. With this assignment I also pushed myself to make everything original so that I would not
violate any copyright laws. Overall, I really enjoyed this assignment and I was glad that I was able
to help a co-worker make a better lesson plan with the incorporation of visual literacy.
