Target Customer.
Industries that are often used in some form or another to carry out sexual assault. For
example, the restaurant industry is often where victims are drugged for date rape. Or college
campuses are often a place where sexual assault is carried out.
Customer Needs. What does the customer want/need?
The customer - industries - want a way to prevent their unsolicited involvement with sexual
assault, whether it is a way to stop date rape drugs from getting into restaurants, or to give
college students a way to prevent rape on campus.
Performance. What must the product be able to do? Be specific.
In the restaurant industry, the product must be able to prevent the use of date rape drugs in a
drink, or to notify the drinker of the presence of date rape drugs. For colleges, the product must
alert campus police of potential sexual assault when activated .
Target Cost. What is the anticipated cost to the consumer for this product?
For the restaurant industry, we would like restaurants to chose our product- likely a glass or cup
of some sort- over normal glasses or cups. The average price we found for a 16oz. Pint glass
was $10.56 for a case of 12 glasses, or $0.88 per glass. Therefore, we would like to keep the
cost of our product close to or less than that price. For the college campuses, we would like our
product to be competitive. One safety system already in place on 92% of campuses is the Blue
Light system, which can cost up to $400,000 to install and up to $75,000 of maintenance every
year, depending on the physical size of the campus, so the installation of our product in all
campus dorm rooms should cost less than $400,000.
Size and Weight. What size should the product be, or what restrictions to size exist?
What are the weight restrictions on the product?
For the restaurant industry, the product should be the size of a 16oz pint glass, and no heavier
than 1 pound. For college campuses, the product should be no bigger than the size of a
doorknob and should not weigh more than a pound.
Operating Environment. Identify the environmental conditions relevant to the
manufacture and use of the product (temperature, corrosion potential, dust or dirt,
pressure, humidity, vibration, noise, degree of abuse, etc.).
The restaurant glass needs to withstand heat, water, and excessive handling. The college dorm
alarm should be able to work even with dust or dirt.

Materials. Is there a specific material or materials that must be used? If yes, describe it.
The restaurant product should be made of glass.
Durability and Maintenance. Will the product require routine maintenance during its
service life? If yes, answer the following.
The dorm room product would require maintenance.
What specific parts of the product must have easy access for maintenance?
The electronics of the alarm system would need to be easily accessible.
What is the anticipated maintenance schedule?
Once a year
Are special tools required? How will they be acquired?
Probably not
Will replacement parts be required? How will they be acquired?
Replacement electronics could be acquired through our company
Ergonomics. Identify considerations for the ergonomics of the product.
The restaurant glass should be able to be held by the human hand.
Global Environment. Will the product include any toxic or dangerous substances? What
is the plan for disposal of the product at the end of its useful life?
The glass would include a chemical coating to detect the presence of date rape drugs, so that
coating shouldnt affect the glass. However drinking glasses are often hard to recycle in the first
place. The dorm alarm would contain electronics that would need to be recycled in special
electronic recycling facilities.
Safety and Legal Issues. Identify potential safety and legal issues that may arise from
the use of this product.
With the restaurant product, the glass could break, and there is a chance that the chemicals
used to detect the presence of date rape drugs could be toxic. The college dorm alarm system
has the chance for prank police calls, which in some states can result in fines or jail time.
Service Life. What is the required service life of the product?
The restaurant product should have service life of at least 1 year, while the dorm product should
last at least 10 years.
Product Life. What is the anticipated length of time that the product will be produced
before it is replaced by a newer version or alternate product?
The product life would probably be 2 years for the restaurant product and 10 years for the dorm
product.

Aesthetics. Are there preferences in the appearance features of the product (color,
surface treatment, shape, material)? If so, describe them.
The restaurant product should be in the shape of a pint glass, it should be made of glass, and
the treatment to detect the date rape drugs should be clear or monochromatic. The college
campus product should be circular, button-shaped.
