Edit the Task List


In this exercise, you will modify the initial task list using the techniques described in the Task List Revisions
table.

1. Open the file Home Construction 1C from your course dataset.

2. Click the View tab then choose Gantt Chart in the Task Views group to display the Task list.

3. Click in the first empty cell at the bottom of the Task Name column.

4. Type Finalize construction plans and tap [Enter].

5. Continue entering tasks 1317, as shown below.

After studying the Task list, you realize that all of these new tasks should occur within task 2:
Initial site conditions. This means task 2 should become a summary task as described in the
preceding table.

6. Follow these steps to move task 12 so that it will fall below task 2:

A. Click the task 12 row heading to select task 12.

B. While pointing to the row heading, drag task 12 upward until the heavy border appears
between tasks 2 and 3; then release the mouse button. Notice that Project moved the
task and renumbered all of the tasks.

7. Now select two tasks by first clicking the task 13 row heading, press and hold the (Shift) key,
then click the task 14 row heading.

8. Drag the two tasks upward and drop them between tasks 3 and 4.

Next, you will indent tasks 35 below task 2. This indentation will automatically create a
summary task.

9. Click anywhere in Task 3, Finalize construction plans.

10. Choose Task > Schedule > to indent task 3.

Task 2 has now been promoted to a summary task.

11. Now indent tasks 4 and 5.

The summary task (task 2) will now appear in bold with three subordinate tasks below it.
Notice that the Task Name entry for Initial site conditions now contains a small black
triangle,. as shown at right.

12. Click the small black triangle to collapse the summary task.

When collapsed, the three subordinate tasks are hidden from view. Now a small white
triangle is displayed next to the summary task.

13. Click the white triangle to display the subtasks.

Next, you want to insert a task relating to building permits within the Task list.

14. Click task 6, On-site work.

15. Tap the (Insert) key.

Project inserts a blank row into the Task list.

16. Type Apply for building permits and tap [Enter].

Notice that Project automatically indents this new task within the Initial site conditions
summary task.

17. Now select tasks 1618 and move them to fall under Apply for building permits.

18. Make sure the three tasks are still selected, then indent them.

Project indents the three selected tasks below the Apply for building permits task and creates a
summary task. You now have two levels of summary tasks within your Task list.

When completed, the revised Task list will appear as shown below.
