IthinkwhatyouseemtobemissingisthatSpeedtronicpanelsusea"minimumselect"functiontochoosethelowestvalueofFSRtocontrolthefuelflowrate.

ThereareseveralFSRvaluesthatarebeingcalculatedatalltimes.FSRSU(StartupFSR)FSRACC(AccelerationControlFSR)FSRN(SpeedControlFSR)
FSRT(TemperatureControlFSR)FSRSD(ShutdownFSR).Theseallareinputstotheminimumselectfunction,and"theleastonewins".Whentheturbineis
runningandproducingpower,FSRSUandFSRSDareusuallysetto100%tokeepthemupandoutoftheway.

Asaturbineisloadedfromzeroload,asFSRNincreasestoloadtheturbine,FSRTdecreases.WhenFSRTislessthanFSRN,thentheunitwillbeontemperature
control.

ThereisanotherFSRvalue,FSRMIN,MinimumFSR,whichissetbeamiminumlimittotrytopreventflameout.

Wedon'tknowwhatoperatorinterfaceyouhavefortheSpeedtronicturbinecontrolpanelyouhave(whichwedon'tknow,either).IfyouhaveaMarkVora
newer,oranHMIonyourMarkIV,youshouldhaveaFSRdisplay,whichwillshowthevariousvaluesallonthesamedisplay,whichcanbeveryinformative.

Somanyquestions,andsolittlepatience.Whileyourdesiretolearnandunderstandisadmirable,pleaserememberthisisafreeforumandweusuallymeetor
exceedmostpeople'sexpectations.But,onethingwearenotisaninstantaneoustroubleshootingandproblemsolvingreference.Ifyouhaveanurgentneedyou
probablyneedtogetsomeonetositetohelpwithresolvingtheproblem.

Yourquestionexhausttemperaturecontrolisansweredasfollows:Theinternaltemperatureofhotcombustiongaseswhicharepassingthroughthestationary
firststageturbinenozzleandontotherotatingfirststageturbinebucketsiscalledthe"firingtemperature"andisnottobeconfusedwith"flametemperature"
whichisusuallyhigherthanthefiringtemperature.(Flametemperatureisreducedbycoolinganddilutionairto"firingtemperature".)Ifthefiringtemperature
istoohigh,thenozzlesandbucketswillnotlastverylong.Ifit'stoolow,thepartswilllastlongerbuttheefficiencyoftheturbinewillbelessthanitcouldbe.
Thereisanoptimalfiringtemperaturethatrepresentshighefficiencyandreasonablehotgaspathpartslife.

TheproblemisthattherehasbeennoeconomicalmeansformeasuringthefiringtemperatureandthereisactuallynodirectmeansonGEheavydutygas
turbinesformeasuringfiringtemperature.BUT,withdecadesofdataandtesting,ithasbeendeterminedthatthereisadirectrelationshipbetweenfiring
temperatureandexhausttemperatureandcompressordischargepressure.Andthatfiringtemperaturecanbeverycloselymodeledorapproximatedusing
turbineexhausttemperatureasafunctionofcompressordischargepressure.So,thereisaformulathatlooksatcompressordischargepressureandexhaust
temperatureandsetsalimittotrytoapproximatethemaximumfiringtemperature,whichrepresentsBaseLoad,andwhichistheoptimalinternaltemperature
forproducingpowerefficientlywhilemaximizinghotgaspathpartslife.

OneofthereallygreatthingsaboutSpeedtronicheavydutygasturbinecontrolsystemsisthattheywereallgenerallybuilttoimplementthesamecontrol
philosophy,albeitwithnewtechnologyaseachsuccessiveversionwasdevelopedandreleased.IfyouknowabouttheMarkIV,thenyouknowthatwhenthe
unitisbeingstartedtheminimumvalueofFSRshouldbeFSRSUandFSRACC.(NewerSpeedtronicpanelsactuallyuseFSRACCtocontroltherateof
accelerationduringstartupbyusingaccelerationasafeedbackolderpanelsjustrampedFSRSUorFSRACCatacertainrateinthehopesthattheactual
accelerationwouldbethedesiredvaluewithoutactuallymonitoringtheaccelerationrate).Andyouknowthatwhentheunitisbeingshutdownafterthe
generatorbreakeropensand14HSdropsout,thatthefuelcontrolisdoneonFSRSDdowntoflameout.

DuringstartuponcetheunitreachesFullSpeedNoLoad(synchronousspeed),fuelcontrolisusuallyaccomplishedwithDroopSpeedControl.Andwhen
beingoperatedinparallelwithotherprimemoversandtheirgeneratorsonagrid,theloadfrombreakerclosuretoBaseLoad(exhausttemperaturecontrol)is
donewithDroopSpeedControl.Astheunitisloaded,thecompressordischargepressurewillincreaserelativelyproportionally.

Whenthecompressordischargepressure(CPD)reachesaparticularvalue,asdeterminedfromtheexhausttemperaturereferencealgorithm/block,fuelcontrol
willswitchfromDroopSpeedControltoCPDbiasedexhausttemperaturecontrol(presumingeverythingisworkingcorrectly,*AND*thattheunitisbeing
operatedproperly).Atthatpoint,theSpeedtronicwillbetryingtoputasmuchfuelinthemachineaspossibletotrytomaketheactualexhausttemperature
equaltotheexhausttemperaturereference,whichisafunctionofCPD(hencethenameCPDbiasedexhausttemperaturecontrol).Thisisusuallycalled'Base
Load'andrepresentthemaximumpoweroutputthatcanbeobtainedforthecurrentoperatingconditions.[NOTEthatBaseLoadisNOTratedloadexcept
undercertainoperatingconditions.]

TheswitchingbetweenFSRsshouldbesmoothandundetectable(fromaloadstandpoint)undernormaloperation.Therearefieldsondisplaysonthe
SpeedtronicoperatorinterfacestolettheviewerknowwhichFSRisincontrol.

Therecanbemorethanoneexhausttemperaturecontrol(exhausttempcontrolisalsosometimescalledexhausttemperaturelimit).Theprimarymethodis
supposedtobebasedonCPDandthebackupcanbeoneofacoupleofmethods.Theintentisfortheunittoalwaysoperateonprimaryexhausttemperature
controlwhenbeingoperatedatBaseLoad.

Exhausttemperaturecontrolcanbeexpressedasa"curve"onagraph.Thesegraphsrepresenttheexhausttemperaturecontrollimits.(Notethatinmaths,a
straightlineisalsoacurve,onewithalinearrelationship.)Inthegraphs,theflatlineatthetopisreferredtoasthe'isothermallimit'andisthemaximum
allowableexhausttemperaturereference.Theexhausttemperaturecontrol"curves"arethenegativelyslopedlines(linesslopeddownandtotherightare
consideredtohaveanegativeslope)attherightsideofthegraphs.

IliketousetheterminologyTTXMandTTRXontheleftbecausewhentheunitisoperatingonexhausttemperaturecontroltheSpeedtronicistryingtomake

Firingtemperaturehasbeendiscussedmanytimesoncontrol.comaswellasabove.Andbecausethebackupexhausttemperaturecontrolcurveissupposedto
bejustslightlytotherightsideoftheprimaryexhausttemperaturecontrolcurve,thatmeansthefiringtemperatureofthebackupcurveisacoupleofdegrees
higherthanthatoftheprimarycurve.

Inolderdays,itwaskindofmeanttobeabackuptoCPDbias,whentherewasonlyoneCPDpressuretransducer,theideabeingthatifthesingleCPD
transducerfailedtheunitcouldcontinuetorun(inanemergency)onthebackupexhausttemperaturecontrolcontrolwhichwasbasedonFSR.

Butnowadays,mostnewmachineshavemultipleCPDtransducersandiftheyhaveDLNcombustionsystems,theycan'trunwithoutaCPDsignal.

Theturbineexhausttemperaturereference(TTRX)isusuallythelowerofeitherTTRXPorTTRXS.

Asotisedsaid,FSRbiascouldbeusedtoapproximateCPDbias,buttheaccuracyofthatapproximationdependsonalotofthings,includingLVDTfeedback
calibration(whichisn'tdoneverywellatmostsitesit'sjust"GE":GoodEnough).

AlotofsitesfindthattheyareactuallyrunningonFSRbiasedexhausttemperaturecontrol,orbackupexhausttemperaturecontrol.That'susuallybecauseofa
problemwiththecalculationoftheControlConstants,orLVDTorflowdividerfeedbackcalibration,orsomecombinationofthethree.

TheonlyrealwaytotellhowthetwocurvesrelatetoeachotheristoplotthemusingtheControlConstantvalues.(NOTE:Theyshouldnotintersect,theCPD
curveshouldbetotheleftofthebackupcurve,andtheyshouldnotbeoffsetbyverymuch.)

ChangestotheexhausttemperaturecontrolControlConstantswillaffecttheoutputatBaseLoad,butchangingthemtoincreaseoutputwillcausethe
internaltemperatures(specificallythefiringtemperature,thetemperatureofthecombustiongasesleavingthefirststageturbinenozzles)toincrease,andthat
willdecreasepartslife.

Itshouldbenotedthatanymanufacturerisgoingtomaximizethefiringtemperatureforthepartsinstalledinthemachineinordertomaximizetheamountof
moneychargedforthemachine.So,theexhausttemperaturecontrolconstantsinstalledinthemachinearealreadysetfortheoptimumpartslife,whichmeans
theupperlimitofsafeandreliablepartslifefortheplannedmaintenanceoutagecycle.

It'slikeadetergentmanufacturertheyrecommendputting0.2Lofdetergentinthewashingmachine.That'sthemaximumamountofdetergenttheycan
recommend,becausetheywanttosellasmuchdetergentaspossible.Itdoesn'tmeanyoushouldalwaysusethatmuch,orthatyoushouldusemoreformore
effectivecleaning.Theamounttheyarerecommendingisalreadythemaximumthatcanbereasonablybeusedwithoutcausingharmtothematerialsandthe
washingmachine.Samewithpesticidesandfertilizersusingmorethantherecommendedamountisusuallyharmfulbecausetherecommendedamountis
usuallythesafestmaximumamountinordertomaximizesales.

So,changingexhausttemperaturecontrolconstantsmaygetyoumorepower,butit'sgoingtocostyouintermsofpartslife,andmaybeevenresultina
catastrophicfailureofcombustionliners,transitionpieces,turbinenozzlesorturbinebucketswhiletheunitisrunning.Whichwouldbereallycostlyinterms
ofpartsandlostproduction.

NooneshouldeverbechangingexhausttemperatureControlConstants.Justbecausetheycanbechanged(whichisanoversightonmyopinion,toallow
fieldchangeswithoutpasswordprivilege)doesn'tmeantheyshouldbechanged.AndchangingoneControlConstantofanarraywithoutunderstandingthe
knockoneffectsthatchangecanhaveonturbineoperationcancausemoreoperationalproblems.

AsforwhichcontrolconstantsareforCPDcontrolandwhichareforsecondarybias,youneedtoconsultthesequencing/applicationcodeforyourunit.Some
unitshaveverysimpleexhausttempcurves,somehavemultisegmentedcurves.TheexhausttemparraycanalsobesetupforPeakLoadandforasecond
fuel,aswell.So,thereisnohardandfaststandardastowhichControlConstantsarealwaysusedforwhatpurposetheCSPorapplicationcodefortheunitat
yoursitedefineshowtheControlConstantsareassignedandwhichonesare"active"when.

Thepresentationofanyofthismaterialisnotintendedtobeusedfor"tweaking"ofturbineoperationoutsideoftheparametersspecifiedintheControl
Specifications.It'sonlyintendedasanexplanationofhowcontrolschemesareaccomplished.Useofthismaterialtotweakturbineoperationoutsidethe

Idon'tknowwhenyouweremeasuringexhausttemperature(whetherornottheunitwasatBaseLoadorPartLoad),butsomethingiswrong.Theformulain
thepostyoutookthegraphfromclearlysaysthatasCPDincreasesthecorrespondingexhausttemperaturewilldecreaseforthesame(constant)firing
temperature(theslopedportionofthegraph).

TheinverserelationshipisONLYtruewhentheunitisoperatingwithCPDbiasedexhausttemperaturecontrolactive.Thecontrolfieldontheoperator
interfacemaindisplaymustread"TemperatureControl",andtheBaseLoadindicationmustbe"illuminated".Theunitcan'tbeonPreSelectedLoadControl

TemperatureControlisaceilingthatpreventsyoufromoverfiringtheturbine,whichisusedtolimitthemainfuelcontrolparametercalledFuelStrokeReference
