Task 5

Problem statement:
Design a thermocouple based temperature measurement circuit to convert 0C to 550C into 0
- 5V. If the temperature exceeds 550C then a LED alarm should glow. Build the circuit using
NI ELVIS board. Test the performance of the circuit. Make measurements to complete the
following table.

Design:
Rf=1kohm
Rg=1kohm
Therefore A=Vout/Vd
A=5000/22.5
A=250

Therefore
R2/R1=222.22

R1=1Mohm

R2=222.22/3Mhm=74Mohm

For glowing the LED after it crosses certain threshold, we use

a comparator. The threshold is from Instrumentation
amplifier.

Task 6

An N type thermocouple is to be used in the measurement system which must provide an output
of 2V at 200C. A solid state temperature sensor system will be used to provide a reference
temperature correction. Temperature sensor has three terminals: supply, output voltage and
ground and the output varies as 8mV/ C. Sensitivity of K-type thermocouple is 50V/C at
200C. Build the circuit in Multisim and simulate the circuit to make measurements and
complete the following table.

Sensitivity=50Uv/c
Temp=0->200
o/p=2V max
V=50(T-0)
=50*200
=10Mv

Therefore gain will be 200

Due to the change in temperature in reference junction, one more sensor is used to compensate
the voltage differences.
Finally, the overall gain is reduced to 160 and a differential amplifier with 1.25 gain is kept in
series to make the temperature sensitivities same.
As,
8mv/50uv=160
And to make the final gain 200
The A2 gain is 200/160= 1.25
