CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents and discusses the important components of the

research undertaken by the proponents. This composes of research design,

population and sampling, gathering procedure and data treatment.

Research Design

This research focused on the extent of the implication of the SK sports

program of selected Barangays in Lipa. In order to describe, analyze and

interpret the gathered data, the researchers used the purposive method of

research.

According to Research and Statistics with Computer by Dr. Laurentina

Paler-Calmorin (2010), purposive method is based on selecting the individuals as

samples according to purpose of the researchers. An individual or place is

chosen as part of a sample due to good evidence that he is a representative of

the total population. Another, it is constructed to serve specific need and

purpose. This also explores the range and nature of views, experiences and

behaviors (including how survey questions are understood and answers arrived

at).

Population and Respondents of the Study

The population and locale of the study were 80 players of eight barangays

of Lipa City. These 80 questionnaires were distributed in eight baranagays.

Researchers became particular in choosing the respondents. They chose only

ten players from their selected barangays in Lipa City. The chosen barangay, the

researchers distributed 10 survey questionnaires. The eight barangays were as

follows: Barangay Marawoy and Barangay Inosluban, Barangay Lodlod and

Barangay San Sebastian, Barangay Tambo and Barangay Pinagtongulan and

Barangay Sabang and Barangay Pinagkawitan. These barangays represent the

four districts in Lipa City.

Data Gathering Procedure

Upon the approval of the research instructor, the researchers decided to

conduct a study on Sangguniang Kabataan Sports Program Development: Its

Implication to the character development of the youth in the selected barangays

in Lipa City.

In gathering the data, the researchers asked first the permission and

approval of the Dean of the College of Education to conduct the study outside the

school campus. Next, the researchers asked permission from each Barangay

Captains of the abovementioned barangay to conduct the survey. Then, the

researchers distributed the questionnaires to the identified respondents. After the

questionnaires were filled up; the researchers retrieved, tallied, analyzed and

interpreted the data gathered.

Research Instruments

The researchers used an objective scale type of questionnaires. This

focused on the implication of the SK sports development program in terms of the

character development of the youth.

The questionnaire was divided into two parts. The first part was for the

demographic characteristics of the barangay, while the second part included the

indicator or questions on the effects to the intrapersonal and interpersonal

development of the youth.

The questionnaire used the five point scale.

Statistical Treatment

In this study, the following were the statistical tools used in order to

give the researchers a clear picture of the data gathered.

1. Frequency Count. This statistical tool was used to tally the responses of

the respondents and to show the actual distribution of the respondents

demographic profile.

2. Percentage. It was used to determine the rate of the demographic profile

of the respondents in terms of sports program, sports facilities and

sources of fund.

3. Ranking. This tool was used to determine the order of the indicators

mentioned in the study for clearer interpretation of the responses of the

respondents.

4. Weighted Mean. This tool was used to consolidate the perceptions of the

respondents, to have in-depth interpretation of the profile of the

respondents.

5. Correlation Coefficient. This was used to determine the relationship of

the profile of the barangay and the perceptions of the respondents

regarding the variable used in the study.

6. Correlated t-test. This treatment was used to determine the significant

relationship of the profile of the barangay and the perceptions of the

respondents regarding the variables used in the study.

To interpret correlated t-value, the researchers set the level of significance

at 0.05 and 0.01 levels of significance with N-2 degrees of freedom.

The conditions set in decision making will be as follows:

a. Accept Ho if the correlated t-value is less than the tabular t at 0.05 level of

significance.

b. Reject Ho if the correlated t-value is greater than the tabular t at 0.05 level

of significance.

c. If correlated t-value exceeds tabular t at 0.05; hence significant; if

correlated t-value exceeds tabular t at 0.01; hence highly significant.
