President Mukherjee inaugurates 28th Dantan Gramin Mela in West Bengal


i. 28th Dantan Gramin Mela was inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee in Midnapore
district in West Bengal on January 20, 2017.
ii. The mela display the rural handicraft skills of the people of the region and the different goods
ranging from textile to terracotta.

Indias First Multi-Sports Museum Inaugurated in Kolkata


i .Indias first multi-sports museum, Fanatic Sports Museum (FSM), was inaugurated on
January 29, 2017 at the Ecospace in New Town, Rajarhat, Kolkata jointly by Sachin Tendulkar,
Sourav Ganguly, Abhinav Bindra, Deepa Malik and Devendra Jhajaria.
ii. The museum, spread over 6700 square feet, has been launched jointly by
sports historian Boria Majumdar and industrialist from Kolkata, Harshavardhan Neotia. It is a
first of its kind museum in India and is inspired by the MCC Museum at Lords and the IOC
Museum in Lausanne.
iii. Entry tickets to the museum have been priced at Rs 100 with a 50% concession for students.
iv. India already has two cricket museums located at Pune and Chennai. However the new multi-
sports museum would cover variety of games ranging from football, hockey, badminton, tennis,
golf and athletics besides cricket.

BHEL Commissions 500 MW Thermal Unit In West Bengal


i. Government owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited(BHEL) has commissioned new 500 MW
Thermal Unit in West Bengal on January 16, 2016
ii. This was the second 500 MW at Sagardighi Thermal Power Station (TPS) Phase II project in
Murshidabad district of West Bengal.

Vodafone India signs MoU with West Bengal, to invest Rs 3,000 crore in West Bengal
i. UK-headquartered Vodafone India signed an MoU with the West Bengal government to
invest Rs 3,000 crore for capacity augmentation and new business initiatives over next three
years.
ii. The MoU signed on the sidelines of Bengal Global Business Summit 2017.
iii. Aim: To improve Vodafones leadership position in the state by offering customers a SuperNet
experience through enhanced network.

ParagHavaldar an IIT Kharagpur alumnus wins Technical Oscar


i. An IIT Kharagpur alumnus, ParagHavaldar, has won the prestigious Scientific & Technical
Awards popularly called the `Technical Oscar by the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences
for the development of expression-based facial performance-capture technology at Sony Pictures
Imageworks.
ii. He will be awarded a certificate from the Academy at Beverly Hills, California on February 11,
2017.

Kolkatas Sitalpati Gets place in UNESCOs Intangible Cultural Heritage


i. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has
registered Sitalpati or cool mat from the Cooch Behar district, West Bengal as an intangible
cultural heritage.
ii. The Sitalpati are the mats that are used for siting or hanging on the doors or windows during
summer season. They are made up of weaved green cane slips of murta plants widely found in
the region.

Damodar Valley Corporation receives NTPC award 2015-16


i. Damodar Valley Corporation received NTPC award 20015-16 from Union Power
Minister, Piyush Goyal.
ii. DVC chairman Andrew WK Langstieh, received the prize by Goyal amongst the power sectors
under for implementation of Official Language.

West Bengal Set to Give Legal Protection to Hilsa Fish


i. The West Bengal State Department of Fisheries has announced to protect the
endangered Hisla Fish from getting extinct and thus has proposed to introduce law to arrest
anyone found in illegal catching, buying or selling of Hilsa fish weighing less than 500 grams.
ii. With the introduction of the proposed provision, Hilsa Fish would become the first fish to get
legal protection.

Bengal Clinches U-19 Cooch Behar Cricket Trophy for 2016-17 season
i. Bengal won the Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy 2016-17 season against Delhi in the final at
the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi on January 22, 2017.
ii. Bengal was declared winner in the drawn finals on the basis of a first innings lead with 79-run.
iii. Earlier Bengal won the U-19 Cooch Behar Cricket Trophy title in 1997-98 season.

Former Bengal minister Saral Deb dead


i. Veteran All India Forward Bloc leader and former West Bengal minister Saral Deb passed
away .He was 82. Saral was the state Library Minister from 1977 to 1982 and held the
Cooperative portfolio from 1982 to 1987.

IIT Kharagpur to launch Indias first School on Quality and Reliability


i. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur is starting Indias first inter-
disciplinary School on Quality and Reliability (Q&R) in India.
ii. The main of the establishing the school is to improve the quality of life for the people of India
as well as develop quality conscious global citizens.
iii. The Q&R school, in collaboration with other academic units in the Institute will offer academic
courses, research and mission-mode programmes in the area of Quality and Reliability for social
transformation.
iv. The school is being named after an IIT Kharagpur alumnus Quality guru SubirChowdhury as
the SubirChowdhury School of Quality and Reliability. He is the patron of the school who has
offered $1 million fund for school.

Mamata Banerjee declares Kalimpong as separate district


i. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee declared Kalimpong as 21st district of West Bengal on
February 14, 2017. The new district is from Darjeeling.
ii. On the same day Banerjee announced two projects for the development of newly created
Kalimpong
1.Rs 220 crore road link project to connect Kalimpong with Sikkim via the old Silk Route
2.Rs 50 crore water supply project to address Kalimpongs water scarcity problem.

Indias First Hill Station Bicycle Path Unveiled in Darjeeling


i. Indias first hill station bicycle path was inaugurated in Darjeeling on February 25, 2017.
ii. The 20 km long cycle route is developed at an altitude of over 2,000 metres and runs
through thick pine forest and Senchal wildlife sanctuary. The path also provides a view of the
third-highest mountain in the world, Kanchenjunga.
iii .The route starts from near Jorebunglow, south of Darjeeling and ends at a small local eco-
village resort in Chatakpur.

ShriRadha Mohan Singh Inaugurated 2017 Indian Seed Congress in Kolkata


i. The Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, ShriRadha Mohan Singh inaugurated
the Indian Seed Congress 2017 in Kolkata on February 12, 2017.
ii. The theme of Seed Congress is Seed of Joy.
iii. The theme is in line with vision of PM Modi government to bring happiness and prosperity in
thelives of farmers by doubling their farm income by 2022.

i. Noted Bengali singer BanasreeSengupta was passed away in Kolkata, West Bengal on
February 19, 2017. She was 71.

Former Mohun Bagan Goalkeeper Shibaji Banerjee Passes Away


i. Former Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Shibaji Banerjee passed away in Kolkata on February 19,
2019 after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 68.
ii. The soccer legend Shibaji had played for the club for 11 years. Banerjee won 34 trophies with
the club.
iii .He is also well known for stopping a free kick taken by Pele during the 1977 exhibition match
against New York Cosmos.
iv. Banerjee was part of Mohun Bagans three-man technical committee at the time of passing
away.

West Bengal Clinical Establishment Bill 2017 Unanimously Passed in State Assembly
i. The West Bengal Clinical Establishments (Registration, Regulation and Transparency)
Bill, 2017 was passed by the state legislative assembly on March 3, 2017 with full support.
ii. The Bill replaces the West Bengal Clinical Establishments (Registration, Regulation and
Regulation) Bill, 2010.
Key Highlights of the Bill
i. Hospitals cannot charge more than as stated in the Bill.
ii. In case of death due to negligent treatment, hospital would be liable to pay Rs. 10 lakh as
compensation.

iii .Every clinical establishment shall maintain a public grievance cell for lodging of complaints on

West Bengal Gives Official Status to Tribal Language Kurukh


i. The West Bengal government has given an official status to Kurukh language in the state
which has been listed as an endangered language by the UNESCO.
ii. The language was given the official status on February 21 on the occasion of the International
Mother Language Day.
iii. Kurukh is a tribal language that belongs to the Dravidian family. It is spoken by the Oraon
tribal community living in Birbhum-Bankura-Purulia-Midnapore belt and the tea garden regions
in north Bengal.

IIT-Kharagpur Set to Have Supercomputing Facility


Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur is set to become the first academic institutions in
India to receive a supercomputing facility of 1 Peta-flop computing power under the National
Supercomputing Mission (NSM).
National Supercomputing Mission envisages building supercomputing capacity and capability in
the country with an estimated budget of Rs 4,500 crore over a period of seven years.
Peta-Flop is a measurement of computing power based on the frequency of mathematical
calculations that can be done per second.
The institute is setting up a new Centre for Computational and Data Sciences (CCDS) to
build, manage, and operate the high-performance computing facility.

West Bengal Has Highest Number of Arsenic Affected Persons in India: Report
i. According the report presented in Lok Sabha by Union Minister for Drinking Water and
Sanitation Mahendra Singh Tomar, West Bengal was the top most state of India having
highest number of arsenic-affected persons as on March 4, 2017.
ii. The total number of arsenic-affected persons in the state was more than 1.04 crore.
iii. The State Minister of Public Health Engineering (PHE) Subrata Mukherjee informed that the
state has 83 blocks in eight districts where ground water is affected by arsenic contamination.
iv. These districts include, Bardhaman, Malda, Hooghly, Howrah, Murshidabad, Nadia, North and
South 24 Paraganas

West Bengal Beats Goa to Win 71 Santosh Trophy


i. West Bengal beat Goa (1-0) to clinch the 71 Santosh Trophy for a record 32nd time on March
26, 2017 at the GMC Bambolim Stadium, Goa.
ii. The maiden goal came from Manvir Singh in 119 minutes after playing a goalless 90 minutes
to defeat Goa at home ground.
iii. Last time West Bengal clinched the title in 2010-11 against Mizoram.

Bengals Popular Folk Singer Kalikaprasad Bhattarcharya Dies


i. Popular Bengali folk music singer Kalika Prasad Bhattacharya has died in a road accident at
Palsit in West Bengal. He was 47.
ii. The accident took place at Gurap on Durgapur Expressway (NH2) in West Bengals Burdwan
district.
iii. The folk singer voiced in films like Jaatishwar (2014), Moner Manush (2010) and Bhuban Majhi
(2017).

Jhargram Blooms as 22nd District in West Bengal
i. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on March 4, 2017 declared Jhargram as the
22nd district of Bengal and it has been bifurcated from West Midnapore.

IIT Kharagpur to introduce Vastu Shastra


The country's oldest IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) is going to introduce Vastu Shastra
classes for its architecture students.Classes will be introduced from August, 2017
i. Vastu Shastra will be introduced to architecture students from the next academic session.
ii. It will be introduced to undergraduate students as part of courses on basic design and
history of architecture.

First bio-gas bus with flat Re 1 fare inaugurated in Kolkata


i. Phoenix India Research and Development Group in Kolkata has designed a bus that will run
on biogas produced from cow dung.
ii. The company has tied-up with Ashok Leyland to manufacture the 54-seater bus at a cost of
Rs 13 lakh approximately.
iii. The first bus will be flagged off on April 7, 2017 and will run between Ultadanga in the north
and Garia in the south in Kolkata.

iv. The ticket will be charged Re 1 for the 17.5 km stretch, which will be the cheapest mode of

Bengal government introduces Social Security Yojana converges 5 beneficiary schemes


The Bengal government has launched the scheme for unorganized sectors and self-
employed people.
Key Notes:
A common beneficiary programme is prepared for all the sectors and according to that
workers from each of the sectors and their family members will be benefitted.
Children who will enroll in this scheme will also get education benefits.
5 crore people will get benefit from the Social Security Yojana and around 1 crore
will get direct benefit.
The state government has introduced Social Security Yojana by converging five separate
beneficiary schemes for workers.People will get more benefit from this new scheme as compared
with five earlier schemes.
1. State Assistance Scheme for Provident Fund for Unorganised Sector
2. West Bengal Unorganized Sector Workers Health Security Scheme
3. Social Security scheme for Construction Workers
4. West Bengal Transport Workers Social Security Scheme

West Bengal makes Bengali Mandatory in all Schools
The West Bengal government has made the Bengali language mandatory in all schools.
i. It was declared by the States Education Minister Partha Chatterjee on 15 May 2017.
ii. The Bengali language is compulsory for all schools including English medium.
iii. The students who select any of the other languages as their first language would need to
pick up two other languages, among which one would have to be Bengali.

Kolkata to get India's first underwater Metro
Kolkata will launch an underwater Metro which will pass through tunnels several feet under
the Hooghly.
i. The first underwater transportation tunnel of India is ready with the second one nearing
completion.
ii. The tunnel has been constructed 30 meters below riverbed.
iii. It will be connecting two main terminals: Howrah and Sealdah - each of which has a
footfall of about 10-12 lakh passengers per day.

Soumitra Chatterjee to get France's Legion of Honour


Veteran Bengali film actor Soumitra Chatterjee has been conferred with the highest French
civilian honour, the Legion d'Honneur.
i. Ambassador of France to India Alexandre Ziegler will be in Kolkata to present the honour.
ii. It is to be noted that, exactly 30 years ago, Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray was awarded
the Legion of Honor by then French President Francois Mitterrand in 1987.

IIT Kharagpur develops technology for doctors to monitor hospital-bound patients


Indian Institute of Technology of Kharagpur on 2nd June has developed a wireless
technology for remote monitoring of patients.
i.The technology has been developed in the SWAN lab of the Department of Computer Science
and Engineering (CSE) of the institute.
ii.AmbuSens is capable of wireless monitoring of various physiological parameters like ECG,
heart-rate, temperature and blood-pressure.
iii.It can be fitted in an ambulance to ensure remote monitoring of patient condition by
the doctors even before they reach the hospital.

Legendary Singer Sabita Chowdhury dies at the age of 72


Legendary singer Sabita Chowdhury, died at her residence on June 29, 2017. She had done
many playback for Bengali and Hindi films.
i She was suffered with cancer of lungs and thyroid. Her famous songs are Oi jhilmil jhauer
boney, Jaare jaa jaa mono paakhi, Jhilmil jhilmil opaarero monjil and Du chokhey aashaar
nodi chhalachhal.

Cabinet approves creation of three posts of Directors for the three new AIIMS in Andhra
Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra
Union Cabinet has approved the creation of three posts of Directors for the three new All India
Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Mangalagiri near Guntur in Andhra Pradesh,
Kalyani in West Bengal and Nagpur in Maharashtra.
As per the AIIMS Act 1956 Amended vide AIIMS (Amendment) Act, 2012, there
shall be a Chief Executive Officer of the Institute. He shall be designated as the Director
of the Institute and shall be appointed by the Institute provided that the first Director of
the Institute shall be appointed by the Central Government. The Director shall act as the
Secretary to the Institute as well as the Governing Body and support proper functioning
and governance of the three AIIMS.

Kolkata to host global business meet in November 2017


The Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), in association with the West Bengal
Government, will host Horasis Asia Meeting, a Global Business meeting, in November 2017
announced on 18th of July 2017.
i. The two-day business meet will start from 26th November, 2017
ii. It will focus on sustainable business practices in various areas, including power and
energy.

Ministry of Health signs MoU with Government of West Bengal to set up Centre of
Excellence in Transfusion Medicine
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
with Government of West Bengal to set up a state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence in
Transfusion Medicine on 10th of July 2017.
i. The Centre of Excellence in Transfusion Medicine will be set up in Kolkata.
ii. The initiative helps in strengthening the blood transfusion services in the State and the
surrounding region.

Veteran Actress ShakuntalaBarua Gets 'MahanayakSamman 2017'


On July 24, 2017, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee conferred this year's
'Mahanayak Samman 2017' to veteran actress Shakuntala Barua for her contribution to the
world of cinema.
i. For this year, Prosenjit Chatterjee and NusratJahan took home the Best Actor and Best
Actress awards

2017.He was 77 years of age.

ii. He played 17 First-Class matches in a career spanning 1960-61 to 1970-71.

Two new species of Cycas discovered


Research conducted on a tree found in the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic
Garden in West Bengal has revealed two new species of Cycas to the world.
i. Cycas are one of the most ancient plants whose fossils date to the Jurassic period and are
often referred to as living fossils.
ii. Research based on morphological and anatomical characters of this tree led to the discovery of
new species of Cycaspschannae and, later, Cycasdharmrajii in the Andaman and Nicobar
Islands.
iii. The species were named after scientists Paramjit Singh Channa and Dharmraj S. Mishra.
iv. This discovery takes the number of Cycas species found in India to 14.

Former West Bengal minister Gyan Singh Sohanpal passed away


Veteran Congress West Bengal MLA Gyan Singh Sohanpal has passed away on 8th of
August 2017.He was 92 and a bachelor.
Key Points:
i. Gyan Singh was fondly called Chacha. He was elected to the state assembly 10 times.
ii. He was also a former minister in the Congress government in the state.He had contested
last years assembly election in the state but was defeated.
iii. Between 1972 and 1977, he served as transport minister during the chief ministerial stint of
Siddhartha Shankar Ray.

West Bengal gets $300 million loan from ADB for fiscal reforms
On 21st September 2017, ADB announced that it has sanctioned a $ 300 million loan to West
Bengal for carrying out fiscal reforms.
Loan from ADB for fiscal reforms:
i. Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a loan of $ 300 million to carry out
fiscal reforms in West Bengal to make public services more accessible, affordable, and
high quality.
ii. The reforms would be implemented in a period of 2 years.

West Bengal cabinet approves changing states name to Bangla


On September 8,2017, The West Bengal government cleared a proposal to rename the state as
Bangla and sent a proposal to the Centre for approval. The Mamata Banerjee government
had earlier too sent a proposal for the change of name, but it was rejected by the central
government.
i. The earlier proposal had three different names for the state Bangla in Bengali, Bangal in Hindi
and Bengal in English.
ii. In order to avoid the confusion the government decided to send another proposal to
change it to only Bangla in all three languages including Hindi, English and Bengali.

India gets its first Indigenous sniper rifle from West Bengal
Indias first indigenous sniper rifle was launched at the rifle factory in West Bengal.
Key Points:
i.Its total cost is Rs 2.5 lakh and weighing 6.7 Kg.
ii.The rifle has a shooting range of 800 meters. The factory has received orders from the CRPF
and police forces of Haryana and Rajasthan.
iii.These rifles are a must for urban police, for VIP protection, hostage situations and terror
attacks.

West Bengal leads in new tax registration under GST regime


According to the reports, the national average is 23%; Bengal leads the pack with as high
as 77% in new tax registration under the GST regime in India.

i.As per the reports, about 245,000 people in the state are tax payers while the number in the
country stands at around 8 million.

Netaji statue unveiled at West Bengals Naval Area Headquarters


On September 10,2017, an eight-foot bronze statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was unveiled
at the Naval Area headquarters of West Bengal by Vice Admiral HCS Bisht, Flag Officer
Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command in the presence of Professor Krishna Bose,

West Bengal govt revives Gorkha Territorial Administration with BinayTamang as


chairman
The West Bengal government has appointed GorkhaJanmuktiMorcha (GJM) leader
BinayTamang as the chairman of a new board of administrators to run the Darjeeling
hills.
Key Points:
i.The board chaired by BinayTamang will govern the area that falls under the Gorkhaland
Territorial Administration.

East Bengal wins 8th consecutive Calcutta Football League Title


On 24th September 2017, East Bengal won the Calcutta Football League (CFL) title for the 8th
consecutive time at the Kanchenjunga Stadium, in Siliguri, West Bengal.
East Bengal wins 8th Consecutive Calcutta Football League:
i. East Bengal has created a new record by winning the Calcutta Football League (CFL)
title for the 8th consecutive time.
ii. It has won all the CFL titles since 2010.
iii. It has a total of 39 CFL titles making a tournament record.
iv. East Bengal Club won the title in a 2-2 draw against MohunBagan Club in the final
Premier Division A match of the 2017 season.

Veteran Bengali actor Dwijen Bandyopadhyay passed away


On 27th September 2017, Veteran Bengali actor Dwijen Bandyopadhyay passed away, at his
residence, in Kolkata.
i. Dwijen Bandyopadhyay died of massive cardiac arrest at his residence, at 2 am on

West Bengal to set up Scheduled Caste advisory council
On October 13, 2017, West Bengal State Cabinet took a decision to set up its scheduled
caste advisory council. As per West Bengal State Government, it is the first Indian state to
have such council.

Govt. of India and Asian Development Bank Sign $300 Mn Loan to Promote Further
Fiscal Reforms in West Bengal
On October 24, 2017, Asian Development Bank and the Government of India signed a
$300 million loan to continue fiscal reforms in West Bengal aimed at improving the quality
of public service delivery.
i. Funds procured through this loan will be deployed in the second phase of West Bengal
Development Finance Program which has a target to increase public investment by reducing
unproductive expenditure and generate savings from efficiencies in revenue collections.
ii. The first phase of the program focused on fiscal consolidation through which West
Bengals fiscal deficit reduced to 2.2% in FY2016 from 3.4% in FY2012.

West Bengal to lease land for football centre to AIFF for Rs 1


On 30th October 2017, the West Bengal cabinet decided to provide a 15 acre land to the All India
Football Federation (AIFF) on lease for Rs 1 to help set up the National Centre of Excellence.
West Bengal to lease land for AIFF for Rs 1:
i. The West Bengal cabinet has decided to give 15 acre of land to the AIFF for 90 years on
an exchange of Rs 1 only.
ii. AIFF President Praful Patel has said that, a National Centre of Excellence for football will
be set up with the land, at Rajarhat New Town in Kolkata, with help from the FIFA.
