LIVE Jeff Sessions Testifes Before House Panel
c 8:09 AM
AG Sessions testifes about charges that he lied to or misled Congress about Russia and Trump campaign contacts.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions denied he lied or misled Congress about contacts with Russia by
I have always told the truth, and I have answered every question as I understood them and to
the best of my recollection, as I will continue to do so today, Sessions said in prepared
testimony Tuesday to the House Judiciary Committee.
Democrats on the panel made clear they would focus their questions at an oversight hearing on
revelations by Special Counsel Robert Mueller that appeared to undercut Sessionss sworn
testimony at his Senate confrmation hearing in January that he wasnt aware of anyone in
Trumps campaign making contact with Russians.
Court documents fled by Mueller last month revealed that Sessions -- as a Republican senator
who led then-candidate Trumps foreign policy team -- was at a meeting last year where George
Papadopoulos, an unpaid adviser, boasted of his Russian connections. Papadopoulos has
pleaded guilty to initially lying to the FBI about the timing of his Russian contacts.
Now Recall
I do now recall the March 2016 meeting at Trump Hotel that Mr. Papadopoulos attended, but I
have no clear recollection of the details of what he said during that meeting, Sessions said.
After reading his account, and to the best of my recollection, I believe that I wanted to make
clear to him that he was not authorized to represent the campaign with the Russian government,
or any other foreign government, for that matter. But I did not recall this event, which occurred
18 months before my testimony of a few weeks ago, and would gladly have reported it.
In the past month, we have also learned that the attorney general must have been very much
aware of a continuing exchange of information between the Trump campaign and the Russian
government, Representative John Conyers of Michigan, the committees top Democrat, said in
his prepared opening remarks. Under oath, knowing in advance that he would be asked about
this subject, the attorney general gave answers that were, at best, incomplete.
