Chapel Hill, Carrboro mayors win re-election

In Chapel Hill and Carrboro,
the mayoral incumbents both
won by significant margins.
Chapel Hill Mayor Pam
Hemminger won her re-elec-
tion against write-in candidate
Eugene Farrar. Hemminger
will serve her second term
as mayor, and secured 92.4
percent of votes, according to
unofficial results from Orange
County precincts.
Hemminger was excited
to receive support from the
community and said her past
years as mayor have been an
incredible experience.
I just see such a bright
future for Chapel Hill, she
said. We are a creative, inclu-
sive community that try to
do even more and I love that
about us. Were a community
that cares and so being able
to take that energy and focus
that into something thats
productive for our community
is where were heading.
Hemminger said she had
felt strong and confident
about her campaign and
had been looking forward to
implement and continue ini-
tiatives such as arts programs,
UNCs Arts Everywhere pro-
gram and the teen task force
the town is starting.
We have a civil rights com-
memoration task force going
on right now, and then just a
lot of continued changing on
how we bring that more com-
mercial space to Chapel Hill
to diversify our tax base, she

Farrar ran his campaign as
a write-in candidate and pre-
viously served as Chapel Hill-
Carrboro NAACP president.
He said he although he had
run as a write-in candidate,
that everyone deserves the
opportunity to run for mayor.
I respect the candidate
that is right in the end, he
said. But it should show
other candidates as well as
the incumbent. But Im not
deterred about running, and
I havent changed my mind
about running.

ning against

date Mike Benson with 87.8
percent of votes, according to
unofficial results from Orange
County precincts.
Lavelle said she looks for-
ward a third term as mayor.
The campaigning experi-
ence was an opportunity for
Lavelle to re-engage with
constituents in a different
way by hearing new ideas and
keeping an open mind.
It also really makes you
appreciate your friends and
your family, she said. It
really takes a village to run a
campaign and to be a mayor,
and Im really fortunate to
have all that.
Though Benson lost the
election, he said he was still
feeling positive with his fam-
ily and friends.
So theres a choice on the
ballot people have chosen,
theyve chosen Lydia and for
the next two years shes my
queen and I fully support her,
if youre talking about Game
of Thrones, he said. I fully
support her, shes extremely
wonderful and I do support
her very much.
Lavelle said the town had
several projects under devel-
opment that she was excited
about, and her number one
priority was working with
Orange County to build a
southern branch library on
South Greensboro Street. She
said the town is also working
on a potential affordable com-
mercial development project
of Old 86 in partnership with
Orange County.
Thats a really neat, excit-
ing idea that many of our
board members are excited
about, trying to keep our local
businesses, she said. Having
a place where they can expand
and be part of Carrboro, in
a kind of partnership if you
will, with the town, and a way
to keep them local. Those are
just two of the projects I am
excited about.
Hemminger and Lavelle
both expressed similar senti-
ments that they were excited
to continue their tenure as
mayor of their respective
towns, and proceed with their
ongoing projects to improve
Chapel Hill-Carrboro.

Graduate students press for social and financial change

In her first year as a gradu-
ate student at UNC, Abigail Lee
applied for and received food
stamps.
Lee is a graduate student in
the English department, whose
stipend for both semesters
is about $16,000. She is also
supplementing her income as an
English teaching assistant, an
academic tutor and a biostatis-
tics student assistant. At the end
of the year, nearly $2,000 goes
directly back to the University in
the form of student fees.
Lee is a member of the
Workers Union at UNC, which
aims to bring workers dissat-
isfaction to the attention of the
administration. Julia Longo,
a graduate student in UNCs
archeology program, is also in
the union and is paid $15,700
per year before student fees.

Shalane Flanagan, made history last weekend,
being the first American woman to win the New
York City Marathon in 40 years. Her victory
inspired runners all over the world, especially the
UNC Marathon Team.
Brittany Hughes, a junior and officer of auxil-
iary on the UNC Marathon Team, has looked up
to Flanagan ever since she competed in the 2016
Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
I remember watching her run the Olympic
trials marathon, and I remember I really liked
the way that she ran that race even though she
had a tough race that day, Hughes said. I looked
her up and found out she went to UNC, and she
became my favorite runner.
Hughes said that marathon running hurts a
lot.
You start out not knowing if youre going to
be able to do it, she said. This was my second
marathon, so I know I can do it, but something
about 26 miles is intimidating. It hurts more as
time goes on, so you have to be ready to push
yourself.
Hughes decided to run the NYC Marathon last
April and has been training for it since last May.
This weekend, as Hughes ran in the same race as
Flanagan, she was inspired by Flanagans victory
and was able to continue pushing herself as the
race got more difficult.
I was at a tough spot in my race, at about mile
10.5, when I got the notification on my phone
that she had won, Hughes said. I started crying,
and I felt that I was just running on clouds for
like 2 miles. Im pretty sure that was my fastest
mile the whole race.
Flanagan has also served as a role model
for junior Danielle Curtis, a member of the
Marathon Team who also ran in the NYC
Marathon this weekend.
I was still running when Shalane finished,
but as soon as I finished, the first thing I did
was ask who won, Curtis said. I got to run
with her when she came to Chapel Hill on tour
for her cookbook a few years ago. She went to

just very nice and smiling, and I
always say thank you because I
think she just fosters an environ-
ment where people want to say
thank you to her because she is
just so great.
Kim decided to dress up as
Isom for Halloween this year
after debuting a UNC-themed
costume last year.
My admiration of her
made me want to be like, Oh,
this is what I want to be for
Halloween, Kim said.
After seeing a post about Isom
UNC, and she is the first American woman to
win in 40 years, so I was thrilled when I heard
she won.
The UNC Marathon Team has its semester
marathon this upcoming weekend, and Curtis
said she thinks Flanagans victory will be a great
boost for morale.
Shalane having that victory a week out from
the team marathon will get spirits up, she said.
We have a group chat for the team, and every-
one was freaking out.
In a sport as demanding as marathon run-
ning, it is essential to remain motivated and
push yourself in the later miles of the race. Max
Patel, president of the UNC Marathon Team,
said Flanagan could provide that motivation to
the team.
She is one of the best world class runners
right now, Patel said. She ran for the varsity
cross country team and track team. The fact that
we have this tie through the University is pretty
neat.

Reichart recovers, looks to help others too

quite as planned.
I was on my way to get
some ice cream and I saw
fire, Reichart said. I just
thought it was simple arson.
Growing up, I was an Eagle
Scout, so I have some similar-
ity with fires. I never saw the
perpetrator, everything just
accelerated so fast.
Reichart had come across
the explosion at the Davie
Poplar, a campus landmark.
He approached the tree and
attempted to kick the fire
out. In a matter of 15 to 20
seconds after approaching
the fire, the backpack the fire
started from exploded. In the
process, the tree was scorched
and Reichart said he was
thrown about 30 feet.

walking to class, while also
raising money for charity.

I just got up, and I must
have been pumped with

Candidates with CHALT- One new face joins

Rachel Schaevitz will fill four
vacant seats on Chapel Hill
Town Council and all were
endorsed by the Chapel Hill
Alliance for a Liveable Town.
Incumbents Maria Palmer
and Ed Harrison both lost
their seats, alongside new-
comer Carl Schuler.
According to unofficial
results from the Orange
County Board of Elections,
Gu won approximately 20
percent of the vote the
highest percentage of any of
the candidates. After facing
discrimination during her
campaign, Gu said the sup-
port of the Chinese-American
community has amazed her.
Since last years election,
a lot have felt frustrated,
depressed, put in fear of all the
rhetorics we hear, Gu said. I
think today we truly feel we
are part of this country. We are
part of this community. We
are all Americans. From this
campaign, we can see that.
During his election-night
victory speech at R&R Grill,
Buansi said his goal from the
very first day of his campaign
was to incorporate more
of the community into the
towns decision-making pro-
cess. His door will be open to
anyone and everyone, he said.
I want to make sure that
our historically underrepre-
sented groups are at the table
and I want to make sure our
young people are at the table
and are armed with the skills
that they need for effective self-
advocacy and for effective civic
engagement, Buansi said.
At Mediterranean Deli, the
crowd gathered for Schaevitzs
election party featured
friends, family and members
of CHALT. Tom Henkel, a
co-founder and current trea-
surer for CHALT, said with the
election of the four CHALT-
endorsed candidates, the coun-
cil will be more unified now
that theyve cleaned house.
Pam has been unable to
do what she wanted to do
with the city council. And
its because the incumbents,
people who were still there,
were fighting her virtually all
the way, Henkel said. We
feel that the mayor will have a
council now that will support
things she wants to do.
In light of her win, Schaevitz
said she is thrilled that so many
of the council members are
aligned on town issues and will
be able to work quickly to put
decisions into action.
Maria Palmer, who has
served on the council since
2013, said she was very sad
for the town of Chapel Hill
after learning of her loss.
I have hope because I feel
that some good people were
elected, they are good people
with good intentions, she
said. I have faith that they
will learn how hard it is to
work on all the priorities that
our citizens have while fight-
ing for social justice and I
will continue fighting for the
people I represent, many of
who couldnt vote.

The Carrboro Board of
Aldermen added one new face
Tuesday night.
Incumbents Jacquelyn Gist,
Randee Haven-ODonnell
and Sammy Slade were all re-
elected, alongside newcomer
Barbara Foushee. This is the
first time Foushee has run for
office.
She won around 25.33 per-
cent of the vote, according to
unofficial results from Orange
County precincts.
Foushee held an election
party at Hickory Tavern in
Carrboro on Tuesday night,
surrounded by friends and
family.
Im just really excited
for the turnout and support
tonight, and just the way the
community has supported me
over the course of my cam-
paign, she said.
As adviser of the UNC
undergraduate chapter of
the Zeta Phi Beta sorority,
she said the support of her
sorority sisters and students
meant a lot to her. One such
presence at Hickory was UNC
professor Deborah Stroman.
According to unofficial
results from Orange County
precincts, Gist received
23.21 percent of the vote and
Haven-ODonnell received
22.5 percent.
Gist was first elected to the
Board of Aldermen in 1989.
Her re-election means she
will serve at least 32 years in
office. Gist said despite her
experience, she worries every
time she has to campaign.
I never assume Im going
to win. Im always very thank-
ful and surprised, she said.
Its kind of affirming. So Im
very grateful that the people
of Carrboro are showing that
once again they think its okay
for me to help them.
Gist said she is a shy extro-
vert and campaigning can
be difficult for her, but she
credited Haven-ODonnell
with helping her feel more
comfortable and confident.
The two held a joint election
night party to watch results
at the home of a mutual close
friend, Melva Okun.
Haven-ODonnell has
served three terms on the
board. She said being re-elect-
ed for a fourth term is exciting
because it shows that her con-
stituents trust and believe in
her ability to represent them.
I believe that they feel that
the work that I do restores a
sense of trust in government,
and in these times that is one
of the most important jobs
I can have, is to be able to
restore (the) sense of wanting
to participate in government
and that people in govern-
ment can be trusted and that
they will listen to what you
have to say, they will try and
work with you, were going
to create solutions together,
she said.
Paul Clark was the only
candidate who was not elect-
ed. He received 7.16 percent
of the vote, and less than half
of a percent of voters wrote
in candidates, according to
unofficial results.
Results for Carrboro may-

were called around 9 p.m.
Tuesday. At Hickory Tavern,

as the crowd realized Foushee
had won the majority of the
vote.
My platform is based on a
diverse civic participation and
leadership and Im just very
proud of the campaign that I

Taxing, a tale of two school districts

For more than 100 years, the
Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools
System has had a special tax, provid-
ing additional funding to the district

lacks. Despite multiple attempts
to merge the school systems over
the past couple of decades by the
Orange County Commissioners, the
two districts remain separate.
The creation of school districts
in North Carolina began in 1870 in
Greensboro. Municipalities then
began to increasingly seek charters
from the state in the early 20th cen-
tury, according to a 2003 merger
study report for the Orange County
Board of Commissioners.
The inspiration for Chapel Hill to
create its own district came from a
group of UNC professors who want-
ed to improve the quality of educa-
tion and attract more staff members
to the University, according to
Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.
These (school districts) were often
established to take advantage of the
larger tax bases that often existed in
urbanized areas, and to thereby afford
a higher level of education funding
within the special district than might
otherwise have been available through
the surrounding county school sys-
tem, the report states.
The North Carolina General
Assembly officially granted Chapel
Hill its own charter, which established
a special school district tax to grant
additional funds for public schools.
Chapel Hills African-American com-
munity voted themselves into the
district by the 1930s, and Carrboro
joined in the 1950s, said Mia
Burroughs, a member of the Orange
County Board of Commissioners.
It was fairly common for North
Carolina to have multiple school dis-
tricts within one county. In the 1950s,
the state had 174 school districts in
total, including 100 county systems.
School districts began consolidating
and merging in the 1960s to provide
more equitable funding for students.
The Orange County Board of
Commissioners has considered merg-
ing the CHCCS and Orange County
Schools systems, and it assigned a
study commission in the 1985 to
analyze the benefits of a single school
district. Overall, the commission
found the districts should have wait-
ed until the future to merge.
But once former Orange County
Board of Commissioner Moses
Carey proposed to merge the Orange
and CHCCS systems in the early
2000s, dissent arose on both sides of
the argument.
There was thinking that it would
be good to have the same amount
of spending per student in Orange
County and the countervalent force
was that the folks in Orange County,
in order for that to happen, they
would have to have their taxes raised
substantially, Burroughs said.
She said this is an item thats been
voted on before.
When there was a referendum
in the Orange County district some
years back, it failed.
A later study commission was
assigned to look into Careys proposal,
which was hotly contested amongst
parents and leaders in Orange County.

A new era for the North
Carolina womens basketball
team looks ready to unfold.
Sure, some of the same key
players are back, but the Tar
Heels are evolving this season
into a squad that can impose
itself on the opponent. You
could already start to see a
transformation being made
as the team thumped Mount
Olive, 102-47, during an exhi-
bition game Monday.
It makes a huge differ-
ence having some more size
in there, it really does, head
coach Sylvia Hatchell said.
Last year, theyd just lock us
up outside and it was hard
because our perimeter kids
were always guarded. Now,
with inside theyre having to
give attention in there.
In the new season, the team
is still relatively inexperienced.
With 6-foot-4 first-year center
Janelle Bailey and 6-foot-2
first-year forward Jaelynn
Murray plugged into the line-
up, the Tar Heels are learning
on the fly, but they now have
enough strength and height to
pull down more rebounds on
both ends of the floor.
An inside presence is some-
thing the Tar Heels havent
had for several years now. Last
year, the team only had senior
Hillary Fuller to fill that role.
Once she was out to injury,
they didnt have anyone who
really had the size to contribute
to the rebounding column, an
essential part of creating offen-
sive points and taking away
opportunities defensively.
Now, they have two.
I knew when I came here,
I could have a big role, Bailey
said. I knew that I was play-
ing with good people, have
good teammates and, as you
can see, I think its working
out well. I think were going to
shock a lot of people this year.
On the boards, Murray and
Bailey brought down 12 and
nine rebounds, respectively,
and added a combined 29
points. They showed signs of
their inexperience at times,
but their presence allowed
the offense to breathe.
As an older player, Paris
Kea said she always tries to
remind the two first-year
players to focus on rebound-
ing. For Bailey, physicality
was a main priority on the
floor against the Trojans after
not performing as well as she
wanted in the first game of
her college career.
No one lets you have any-
thing easy, said Bailey. They
dont care if youre 6-foot-4,
200 pounds. You have to earn
every possession. Every time
you get the ball you have to
earn every point you can get.
Kea, a redshirt junior, is
one of the players who is
already benefiting the most
with Murray and Bailey on
the court. After playing the
stretch four last year at just
5-foot-9, the guard was able
to spend more time Monday
on her natural outside game.
After 30 minutes on the
court, she finished with a
game high 22 points, seven
rebounds, six steals and eight
assists.
Paris is so versatile,
Hatchell said. She can play
just about any position on the
floor.
The win again Mount Olive
and an earlier 84-62 exhibi-
tion victory over Wingate last
Wednesday doesnt mean
the team has it all figured out.
Its still going to be a process.
Theyve only played
together a couple games,
Hatchell said, so I think
theyre going to get better and
better.
The new Tar Heels will
have their first real test Friday,
when they take on Hampton
at home to open the season.
As the season gets going, itll
only give the young team more
chances to learn about itself.
All the practice is over,
Hatchell said. Now, its for
real.

Get ready to get down
Kamikazi is hosting their
annual fall exhibition show-
case Nov. 12 at 3 p.m. in the
Sonja Haynes Stone Center
for Black Culture and History.
Kamikazi is a co-ed hip-
hop dance group at UNC.
This is their third annual fall
exhibition showcase.
Dance teams from across
North Carolina will be show-
ing their talent at the event.
Madison Casey, social chair
for Kamikazi, said the show-
case is meant to give teams the
opportunity to perform and
provide a sense of community.
Theres our family, and
then theres the larger fam-
ily of all the teams in North
Carolina, Casey said. Its
something that inspires us
every day, and we hope that
bringing these teams togeth-
er were able to not only
inspire other dancers but
inspire the people that come
(to the show) by seeing how
supportive, encouraging and
loving this environment is.
The gathering of teams in
one place gives members the
opportunity to appreciate
other styles of dancing.
I think our main thing that
we want to show to our team
is that there is a large dance
community out there, said lot to offer and a lot to bring

Kamikazi. Its worth it to get
outside of dancing at UNC
and push yourself outside of
your limit to meet and share
with other people and get
involved.
Jason Yu, a member of
Moonlight, said the showcase
allows them to show off their
hard work.
Showcasing your identity
and your culture through
your performances, its anoth-
er opportunity to explore
through dance, Yu said.
Practicing sets and per-
forming sets can create two
different feelings for dancers
when participating in events
like the fall showcase.
Its important because,
this happens to a lot of
teams, you get really focused
on just practice, practice,
practice, but theres some-
thing different when you per-
form, said Kayla Dehoniesto,
secretary and treasurer of
Kamikazi. Performing in
front of a bunch of other
teams that also love dance
just as much as you do its
a whole different environ-
ment.
Having other teams come
to UNC to perform is critical
to achieving Kamikazis over-
all goal for the showcase.
For this particular event, it
wouldnt be our fall showcase
without them I love my
team, and I think we have a

It wouldnt be the community
without everyone else, and
its a big part of why we like
hosting the event because we
are able to bring in all these
different teams and share
with the community and grow
together.
The showcase gives team
more than the opportunity to
bond and build community
with one another.
I think showcases like
this are cool to go and hang
out and dance, but I feel like
showcases give that extra
incentive and drive for people
something to work for, said

for Moonlight. In the end

formance in general, like you
dont have to have fancy lights
and fancy costumes all you
need is the performers and the
audience, and thats what the
showcase gives out.
Mr. and Miss UNC will be
emceeing the event for the
dance groups.
Were all just college kids
trying to have fun, and its cool
to think were all in differ-
ent schools, but were all still
gravitating towards the same
thing, Olarte said. For me,
since being in Moonlight and
seeing other crews perform
who have their own personali-
ties and styles and that helps
with the whole growth pro-
cess, we all end up learning

For senior Priyansh Patel,
taking care of elderly relatives
was simply a fundamental
part of being in a family, a
value he grew up with in an
Indian culture. Thats why
when he saw the Youth for
Elderly Service booth at Fall
Fest, he immediately took the
chance to get involved.
Theres a great importance
to the elderly or anyone thats
older than you in Indian cul-
ture, Patel said. You have to
respect and foster them like
they fostered you growing up.
Those values were instilled in
me in an early part of my life.
Co-chairperson Patel
said YES began about four
years ago under the Campus
Y. Members volunteer at
a Carrboro nursing home,
Crescent Green Assisted
Living Communities, where
they provide companionship
and build relationships with
residents weekly and at larg-
er-scale monthly events.
Sophomore and marketing
coordinator, Lorena Dujmusic,
said it is important for college
students to volunteer with
the elderly. According to a
University of California, San
Francisco study, 18 percent of
seniors live alone and 43 per-
cent of seniors feel lonely on a
regular basis.
In college, were isolated,
Dujmusic said. We only real-
ly see people around our age
and thats who you interact else a try, Dujmusic said.

such great stories to share.
Many of the monthly activ-
ities are centered around the
holidays. Recently, the com-
mittee celebrated Halloween
with the residents by bringing
in art supplies so they could
create pumpkins and spiders.
But for Patel, the highlight
of his visits are the weekly
bingo nights on Thursdays.
During bingo, students have
more opportunities to talk to
elders one-on-one and learn
more about their personalities.
You definitely see them
in a more competitive light
and see more of their younger
selves, Patel said.
Dujmusic became involved
with YES during the second
semester of her first year.
Ive always loved working
with kids, and I got to college
and figured Id give something
Patel said there are cur-
rently about seven students
that volunteer regularly.
Students can form bonds
with the elderly residents at
Crescent Green during visits.
They have a friendly rela-
tionship, Dujmusic said. One
of the residents raps. Usually
he has one of our volunteers
start rapping with him.
YES also attempts to raise
awareness for diseases like
Alzheimers that affect elderly
people. The committee is cur-
rently trying to get doctors
from geriatric facilities to
speak to the group and other
students who are interested.
Most people after a cer-
tain age get symptoms of
dementia, so its important to
learn how to deal with it and
nurture and foster it, Patel
said.
The committee meets every
other Monday in room 207
at the Campus Y at 5:15 p.m.
The next meeting will be on
Nov. 13, and interested stu-
dents can still get involved.
People focus on kids
because its the start of life,
but life is a full circle, junior
and co-chairperson Autumn
Pettus said. With the elderly,
its tossing them aside and
saying, OK life is over. They
have goals and dreams, too.

sented the preliminary timeline
to the BOT for the McCorkle
project the first step being
the Unsung Founders memo-

It was appointed in 2015 by
Chancellor Carol Folt, fol-
lowing the Board of Trustees
direction to teach and curate
a full and accurate history of
the University after the vote
to rename Saunders Hall to
Carolina Hall.
Within the history of how
the University was built, three
individual narratives stand
out: the first students who
walked the quiet pathways of
McCorkle, the enslaved people
who built them and the indig-
enous people who were on this
land before the University was
even founded.
Through projects that will
enrich, renovate and contex-
tualize McCorkle, Silent Sam
and Unsung Founders, the
task force will provide the
public with that history.
It will help us to under-
stand this place that we all
hold so dear in such a signifi-
cant way, Hertel said.
The Task Force
McCorkle Place is the
second directive Folt gave
the task force, which she
announced in a statement to
campus in September 2015.
The first task was the
contextualization behind the
BOTs decision to rename
Saunders Hall to Carolina
Hall. They created an exhibit
for the lobby of Carolina Hall,
completed in November 2016,
explaining the broader his-

rial, which he said is in need of
repair and renovation.
The (University) has
engaged a landscape architect
firm who will be bringing pre-
liminary proposals to think
about how to make that a
more reverential and contem-
plative space that advances its
original intent, Leloudis said.
He said that part of the
project will hopefully be com-
plete by May 2018.

the task force updates the
BOT continuously on progress
of the project, and plans are
in the works to share those
details with the campus.
Advisory committees will
also be engaged to receive
feedback from the commu-
nity; Crisp works most with
engaging students and mem-
bers of the campus.
Following the renovation
and repair will come the con-
textualization, done in the
form of signage around the
monuments and throughout
the space.
While the project will
begin with the story of those
who were enslaved at the
Universitys founding, Leloudis
said the task force will also
place signs detailing the history
of the indigenous people this
land belonged to originally.
There were people on this
hill before the University was
even established, Hertel said.
We are lifting that story up
because that storys never

Davie Poplar tree: a history of survival

On Dec. 3, 1792,
Revolutionary War Gen.
William R. Davie and five
other men were having a pic-
nic. It was this meeting that
would decide the location of
the University, and it was this
man for whom one of UNCs
many monuments would be
named: the Davie Poplar.
The exact age of the Davie
Poplar is unknown, but
arborists believe it is around
300 years old. This is much
longer than the usual lifespan
of a tulip poplar. In addition
to its long lifespan, the tree
has survived an ice storm,
a hurricane, two lightning
strikes and, most recently,
an attempted arson. Despite
all of this, the tree is treated
the same as all of the others
residing in McCorkle Place.
We dont really pay it any
special attention, University
arborist and forester Tom
Bythell said. What are we
going to do to improve its
environment?
In 1873, the tree survived
its first lightning strike.
At that point, the tree was
already referred to as the Old
Poplar and had legend that
if the tree falls, the University
will fall. Kemp P. Battles
History of the University of
North Carolina described the
strike in a book.
The friends of the
University were grieved, as if it
were ominous of the fate of the
University, but, although there
was a rent through the bark at
least from top to bottom, the
noble tree survived the fiery
attack, the book said.
The tree recovered from
this the following spring, but
a storm in 1902 would give
Davie its next major natural
test. The newspaper The
Observer reported the tree
as blown down, scaring many
students and alumni.
The destruction of this
tree is a great loss from a
historical standpoint and the
fact that it is no more will
be heard with much regret
by all old students of the
University, the article said.
Over a month later, The
Observer reported that the
tree had not actually been
blown down, but that the top
part was completely gone and
a large hollow was left. The
University did not begin pres-
ervation tactics until its sec-
ond lightning strike in 1918.
They got scared. They
thought they were gonna
lose it. So they planted Davie
Jr., which is right next to it,
Bythell said.
Cables were attached from
Davie to two hickory trees for
support, a practice not done
today. The ice storm of 2002
proved the futility of the sup-
port cables.
The hickory tree came
over in that 2002 ice storm
and pulled the cable right
out of Davie, Bythell said. I
thought it was ironic that we
cabled it to two trees that we
thought were stronger than
Davie and we were wrong.
The trees latest trial was
fire. A man attempted to set
the tree on fire with an explo-
sive Nov. 2. Lucky for Davie,
the fire failed to damage it
significantly.
Bythell is confident in the
survival and longevity of the
tree. He said it is doing well
for its age. If the next disaster DTH/RYAN HERRON

More than just preservation Q&A with the founders of

With November marking
National American Indian
Heritage Month, assistant
professor of American
Studies, Benjamin Frey,
thinks the month means
more than just preserving the
memory of native tribes.
I really dont like that
word preservation, Frey
said. To me, it places too
much emphasis on the past
and keeping things like they
were, and I think thats one of
the systemic problems with
the way people think about
American Indians in general
which is thinking about us
as relegated to the past.
Frey is a member of the
Eastern Band of Cherokee
Indians, one of eight state-
recognized American Indian
tribes. Along with being an
assistant professor at the
University, he also heads
Cherokee Coffee Hour. This
event, held every Tuesday
during the school year, allows
students, faculty and staff to
gather in a non-classroom
environment where Frey
teaches them the complexities
of the Cherokee language.
Unlike more commonly
spoken languages, Frey said
many people arent aware that
the language of the Cherokee
tribe or other American Indian
tribes even exist. He started
the Cherokee Coffee Hour in
2013 as a way to introduce this
idea to students and lead them
to other avenues of American
Indian cultures and practices.
All of these tribes, includ-
ing the Eastern Band, are part

Frey said. And yet, so little
representation goes toward
American Indians, our heri-
tage, our contemporary lives
and our futures, that theres
got to be something done. So
if we want to emphasize the
living, changing nature of our
communities, one thing we
can do is study the language.
Senior Cheyenne McNeill
contributed her own native
culture to students to cel-
ebrate the month. As a mem-
ber of the Coharie, McNeill
learned the practice of bead-
ing from her mother growing
up. Tuesday night, she hosted
a beading workshop.
Beading is a big part of
Native American cultures
in general, particularly for
southeastern natives. McNeill
said that for every bead used
in beading, a prayer is said.
To see how difficult it can
be and how long it takes to
make a couple lines versus a
whole piece, I think it gives
people a different appre-

culture and our practices in
general, McNeill said.
McNeill will also help host
a cultural fitness program
entitled Powwow Sweat on
Nov. 14. Randi Byrd, commu-
nity engagement coordinator
for the UNC American Indian
Center, organized many other
efforts throughout the month
on and around campus.
Byrd cited the 22nd
Annual American Indian
Heritage Month Celebration
in Raleigh as an event that
everyone should try to attend.
All eight of the state-recog-
nized tribes prepare year-
round for the celebration,
where they present unique
cultural elements like dances,
craft demonstrations, games
and food.
These events are a great
opportunity, not only to learn
about native cultures, but
to actually meet some of the
current students.

Passionate Poets is holding

MC Vanessa Vendola and
some of the highlights of the
Doug Stuber about the event
and the poetry scene in
Chapel Hill.

Daily Tar Heel: Tell me about
Passionate Poets. What is the
group?
last time, and we had a couple
Vanessa Vendola: My friend
Doug Stuber and I, we came
up with the name. We were
just doing poetry, but then it
wasnt enough people com-
ing in just for poetry.
So, I decided to make it
anything you wanted to do, to
jump up and down up there if
youd like. Poetry is one of my
passions and one of his pas-
sions. So thats how we came
up with the name.
DTH: What is the mission of
Passionate Poets?
Vendola: Oh, to get the other
poets or creative people out of
the closet. We were trying to
do open mics, some of it at his
house one time.
Then we really werent able
to do that anymore, we had to
change that.
So we went to Oasis and
then he said there werent
enough people. Then I decid-
ed, well, its going to be for
anything, not just poetry. So
thats how Ive been getting
more people that way.
DTH: What would you say are
event?
Vendola: Theyre always dif-
ferent. The highlight of last
month was a well-known
piano player, he came and
played.
And another well-known
writer, poet and musician
who sang some of his own
songs so they were there
of poets too.
It ranges from say seven to
18 people.
DTH: When did you decide to
start Passionate Poets?
Stuber: Vanessa and I go way
back. It was mainly her idea,
and then I jumped on board
to try to promote getting
some people there just as a
helper. I think her passion
with poetry is the kind of
new age hippie-dippie reli-
gion that Unity practices,
which is great. But the open
mic has nothing to do with
that.
It has some spiritual-
minded poets, but theres a
difference between spiritual-
ity and religion. So Id say in
this case, we have left-wing,
right-wing, all kinds of poets
show up, and thats what
we wanted. We thought the
name would attract people
who really had poems that
were on the passionate
side, rather than on the,
oh I dont know, eco-side.
You have a lot of environ-
mental poets who are also
passionate, but anyway. Its
a strange world out there
and a lot of times the street
poets are really good, and
they dont get a voice with
the publishers very often. I
think to have an open mic
setting where theres no star
poets, just a straight open
mic is a really good thing for
this town.
Nightlight is probably
the only other one thats
the street poets. The one
at Flyleaf, lots of times you
run into a whole bunch of
academic poets, who heck,
theyre great too what the
heck, its all good. So we can
have a different flavor kind
of, so far. You never know
whos going to show up.
We dont expect to get
well-known, well-published
poets, and thats fine,
because it gives more time
for those who might have a
great thing to say.
DTH: How old are the perform-
ers usually?
Stuber: We get maybe ages 16
to 80, or beyond. So its an
interesting, a very interesting
mix.

Ive heard stories from other
workers who have families
and dependents who are
struggling to keep afloat.
Professors who advise
graduate students in their
departments are aware of
the financial burden that is
inflicted upon their advisees. little bit (from undergradu-

ment and currently advises
four graduate students.
Teaching will provide
them with pay, but its an
embarrassingly low amount,
Matchinske said. Our gradu-
ate students do the lions
share of the amount of work,
writing across the curriculum
and teaching those classes.
While Longo, Lee and
many others are frustrated
with the fees and low sti-
pends, not every graduate
student in the College of Arts
and Sciences feels the same.
Ricardo Martinez-Schuldt
is finishing his final year
as a Ph.D. candidate in the
Department of Sociology and
said his approximate $18,000
stipend allows for a comfort-
able life. He also teaches in
the summer if he cant get
grant money, and said his sti-
pend has increased a couple
times since he joined the
department in 2012.
I would argue we get
a decent size stipend,
Martinez-Schuldt said. My
quality of life has gone up a
ate). I am aware there are
other departments whose
stipends are much less than
what we get, and that would
make it much more difficult.
For me, it would change
things quite a bit.
In the chemistry depart-
ment, graduate students
David Abraham and Leah
Bowers have stipends nearing
$25,000. Although they both
agree their stipend allows them
to live comfortably, the impact
of the student fees does not go
unnoticed. They take 8 percent
out of Bowers and Abrahams
income, and over 12 percent for
Lee and Longo.

paying for things that benefit
the undergraduate population

But Graduate and
Professional Student
Federation President
Madelyn Percy said the
North Carolina General
Assembly has made it dif-
ficult for UNC campuses to
change graduate student
stipends because of under-
graduate tuition. In Article
14 of General Provisions as to
Tuition and Fees in Certain
State Institutions, the NCGA
requires that tuition for in-
state undergraduates will
remain constant or decrease
during the tuition period.
The NCGA has made it
very difficult for campuses to
raise grad students stipends
because they are very strict
about how undergraduate
tuition cannot change for in-
state residences, Percy said.
Additionally, graduate
students often feel helpless
and overworked, said Lee.
This makes the relationship
between advisers and advi-
sees difficult to navigate, and
finding the balance between
boss and adviser can lead to
toxic power dynamics.
When you talk with other
workers who work closely
with mentors, one of the main
things that come up is, My
adviser did this thats messed
up and I dont know what
to do, Lee said. Its really
difficult to report on faculty
because you have to report
to other faculty. There isnt
really accountability.
The reporting system
within each department typi-
cally resides with the depart-
ment chair. Jonathan Lees,
the chairperson of the geology
department, helps arbitrate
issues within the department.
When I was a faculty
member, I hardly knew about
all of the problems students
can have, Lees said. My job
is to help students get through
the program so we either solve
the problem or help them find
another adviser.
Lees said not even one in
20 students has problems
that require adviser switch-
ing, a relatively uncommon
practice. With his students,
he has high expectations. He
requests that they work hard
and forget about weekends,
but that is his way of inspir-
ing them to complete their

Lees attributed the com-
mon conception of bad
relationships between advis-
ers and advisees as simply
students letting off steam and
de-stressing over a beer, com-
plaining about their adviser.
Abigail Lee said there are
still systemic problems in
adviser-advisee relationships
that can be solved by mandated
training for professors before
they take on graduate students.
(Professors) just get these
students working for and
with them, but not everyone
has proper training on how
to be both a manager and
a mentor, Lee said. Were
trying to figure out how we
can encourage faculty to
equip themselves to avoid
and reduce issues with these
power dynamics.
Jonathan Lees believes the
social issues graduate students
have, such as stress and depres-
sion, are best left to the other
resources the University has.
When I became chair,
more students than I ever
could have imagined came
through this door with person-
al problems, Lees said. We

dont have training for how to
support people. Im a scientist,
I dont really understand. So I
turn them to another part of
the University.
While these social and
financial issues continue to
burden the average graduate
student at UNC, the Workers
Union and GPSF have been
calling attention towards
problems that the UNC
administration can fix. They
advocate that, although sti-
pends are not easily adjusted,
student fees for graduate
students can be decreased
or even eliminated, and the
University should begin pro-
viding workshops and train-
ing for advisors.
Theres all this dire gloom
and doom stuff around UNC
and graduate work, Lee said.
What Ive found organizing
with the Workers Union is
that we (graduate workers)
love the work we do. We love
our students, we love teaching,
and were excited to be at UNC
and all our efforts to make it
a better place arent just for
us. Its not selfish, its to make
UNC a better institution.

Salas thought of the idea to
set up a GoFundMe page to
help raise money for her to
visit her son in Arizona.
I was looking at the post,
and it had about 400 likes
and people were commenting
all sorts of nice things about
Joann, Salas said. I thought
that all of those 400 people
could come together and do
something cool for her, if we
gave them the platform to do
so.
The fundraiser, which
started mid-October, raised
more than $7,600, sur-
passing an original goal of
$700. Salas said because of
the quantity of donations
received, he believes this will
help her move into a nicer
apartment in a better part of
the city.

I think thats the bigger
thing and better thing that
came out of this, he said.
Not only is she able to go see
her son, but were actually
able to help her and her qual-
ity of life thats going to affect
her for a lot longer than just
a trip.
Isom received the money
raised by the community on
Friday in the Student Union.
She said she was nervous
walking over because she
didnt know what to expect.
It means a lot. Never in
a million years would have
thought nothing like this
would ever happen, Isom
said. Like I said, I am sur-
prised, Im shocked, it is just
amazing.
Salas said he figured most
people would know Isom
because of her central loca-
tion and the amount of stu-
dents she encounters every
day.
Just kind of seeing the
reaction that everyone had,
it really goes to show that
people really are paying
attention to these people
that we encounter on a daily
basis, he said. It is really
cool to be able to give back
to a community of people
that give us some positivity
every day just by a smile or a
wave or some kindness.

Russian

emocrats are incensed
about the Russia
Thing, whatever might
be there, but it takes away from
valuable conversations that need
to take place.
The investigation of Trump
and his orbit, and how those
individuals interacted with
Russian characters abroad, is
fascinating. Its truly riveting
stuff, but I dont see how it helps
Democrats to win unless that
tree bears fruit. Let those inves-
tigations play out. As things
stand now, the President has
approval ratings not remarkably
lower than when he was elected.
The individuals who mat-
ter in upcoming elections are
not those folks who voted for
Romney and Bush twice each
its the people who flipped from
Obama to Trump. If you want
to lambast those people as racist
or ignorant, thats your preroga-
tive, but I dont see how it helps
anything. The goal should be to
win back disillusioned voters,
not denigrate them.
And thats why the focus
should be on policy goals, not
cultural wars or identity issues.
The economy improved dra-
matically after Obama inherited
a disaster in 2009. The current
economy is a testament to that:
for most Americans, the econ-
omy has returned to pre-crisis
levels, and for others, things are
less rosy. For those with a high
school diploma or less, unem-
ployment rates sit at almost
twice the rate of college grads.
The voters who pushed the
blue states into the Republican
fold are largely of the latter
cohort: education became a
much more salient factor in this
election. Whereas income or
race might have been more pre-
dictive before, that split between
high school graduate or not
mattered measurably more.
While suspending for one
second the more untoward
aspects of the Donald Trump
campaign that ginned up fringe
elements of the nation, this
focus on the educational divide
should inform Democrats head-
ing into the future. Instead of
excoriating the working-class
votes that tended toward Trump
for certain promises he may
have made, to this point unful-
filled, Democrats should focus
on winning them back.
So, it matters less whether
or not President Trump is
impeached. If that happens, we
get President Pence. If he goes,
Paul Ryan, and after him, Orrin
Hatch. Are any of those guys
really preferable, policy-wise?
Not for the left.
We should focus more on
running candidates that can
offer policy solutions that appeal
to wide swaths of voters, not just
those of us in more urban areas.
If Democrats are to succeed,
though, they mustnt, as Saint
Reagan might say, let perfect
be the enemy of good enough.
Republicans have this problem
in their own fractured coalition:
their moderates are too mod-
erate and their conservatives
are too conservative, making
it impossible to whip together
majorities.
The left is a splintered group
right now, but that need not last
forever. As Democrats (hopeful-
ly) win in elections leading up to
2020, the party should coalesce
behind a powerful figure that
transcends ideological chasms.
A big tent is hard to maintain,
but now is the perfect time to
patch any holes leading up to
the midterms and beyond.

Editorial Board needs
consensus and clarity
TO THE EDITOR:
Reading the Oct. 11 edi-
torial page of the DTH was
not a little depressing. The
Board still has not reached
a consensus on the NRA
really? The Board also
seems to be a little on the
fence on the issue of free
speech on campus.
But what really surprised
me was the use of the word
iteration no less than
twice in the latter article,
Free speech then and now.
While I am aware that
languages change through
time, this word seems to
have infected the admin-
istration on campus very
quicklyto all deans who
might be reading this,
please stop using this
word!and apparently our
everyday speech.
First we are told that
another iteration of the
board made a vigorous
defense of free speech...
and then, This iteration
of the board, for the most
part, still adheres to this
position.
I guess that it has
become synonymous with
form or variant. But is
this really what the word
means? Its original usage
emphasizes repetition and
sequences of procedures
or processes, though I am
told that it can also mean
a version of computer soft-
warethe probable culprit.
But may I suggest that
we stick to the clearer, a
former board, or the 2015-
2016 board. And later in
the paragraph, this edito-
rial board will do, though
you could have said, the
current board, or maybe
just we for heavens sake.
And, to students who
may be reading this, a
note on prepositions. The
expression is based on;
not based off of; or based
around.

UNC shows true
colors post-scandal
TO THE EDITOR:
The University state-
ments about the athlet-
ics/academic scandal are
shameful.
As the NCAA reports,
UNC acknowledged that
the courses did not meet,
involved little, if any, faculty
engagement and were fre-
quently graded by a former
curriculum secretary.
Even if there were no
vacuous and impotent
NCAA, this we know.
Many UNC athletes
gained credit for fraudulent
classes and as a result those
athletes maintained aca-
demic eligibility to compete
in games.
Thats the core truth of
this shameful affair.
In sharing the early
influences on her life,
Michelle Obama remarked,

Post-scandal, we must
challenge status quo
TO THE EDITOR:
I was shocked when I
read Alexander Peeples
column from Oct. 16, and
I think that the author
missed the entire point of
this primarily academic
scandal.
I can only suggest that
the senior history and polit-
ical science major attempt
to get into HIST 383 this
Spring, Big-Time College
Sports and the Rights of
Athletes, 1956 to the pres-
ent the class that the
administration attempted
to remove from the regis-
trar this fall.
This is coming from
someone who is not a fan
of college athletics, and
someone who went to a
different University during
his undergraduate history
career (NCSU).
You seem so satisfied
with the status quo in only
the way that a privileged
white Southern man could
be (coming from someone
who is equally pale and
male). However judging
by your statement that we
belong to a, university with
a commitment to ensuring
all students can afford to
attend... we seem not to
come from similar socio-
economic backgrounds.
Ive had to take on sig-
nificant debt to attend two
public universities, and for
me and others tuition is far
from the affordable.
So rather than have the
mere idea of a decent uni-
versity, why not actually
advocate for improvements
and provide full throated
criticism of its failings?
Maybe my glasses have a
skeptical too-dark tint, but
I counter that yours are far
too rosy.
