Blackboard on 13th of January 2015, 4pm.

For the essay (final submission), you are required to:


1. Analyse one piece, not from amongst those studied in lecture or seminars, by one of the
following composers: Robert Schumann, Franz Schubert, Richard Wagner, Anton Bruckner,
Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, Felix Mendelssohn, Hugo Wolff, Richard Strauss, Clara
Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn.
2. And show how the piece reflects the socio-economic, technological and aesthetic
developments of the Romantic movement and era.

You must do this with reference to:


1. non-musicological texts giving accounts of the historical background to
the period;
2. musicological texts exploring the period and its music;
3. your own analysis of the score for the piece you have chosen, and
possibly other published textual analyses of the piece.
Your argument must reflect all these sources and show how they inter-relate. The
Bibliography (in both initial and final submission) should be divided up in this way.
Rationale
The purpose of this assignment is to help you develop critical skills in listening to and
commenting on music. You will be asked to demonstrate that you understand both the
changes that occurred in 19th Century art music, and the changes that happened in the
socio-economic context, and also the extent to which the two are linked. You will be
required to demonstrate in depth knowledge and understanding of a few pieces with
reference to the scores and be able to use harmonic and motivic analysis in your
commentary on them. You will also need to show that you are familiar with a wide range of
historical texts related to the Romantic movement and its affect on music in particular.

Essay: 60%
Feedback: you will receive summative written feedback on 3rd of February (as per
School policy) via Blackboard. This date may be affected if you are allowed extra time
for submission.
