Affordable quality care close to home

O ne amenity that makes communities great is quality
affordable health care. In Evanston, there are a number of
choices close to home that offer state of the art medical care,
with prices comparable to big city hospitals.
Evanston Regional Hospital offers a full range of services
including a fully-staffed emergency room that offers wait
times of less than 30 minutes, to surgical services, physical
therapy, pediatric, and orthopedic services, as well as a wide
range of care from birth to elderly health concerns and every
issue in between.
Evanston Regional Hospital has been named one of the
nations top performers on key quality measures by the Joint Commission, the leading accreditor
of health care organizations in America.
This recognition is based on data reported to the Joint Commission about evidence-based
clinical processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions, said a hospital press
release.
Evanston Regional Hospital has
received this recognition for several years
in a row, and is one of the few rural
hospitals in Wyoming to hold such a
distinction.
ERH serves the greater Evanston
area, including Fort Bridger, Lonetree,
Lyman, Mountain View, Kemmerer and
Randolph, Utah.
Uinta Urgent Care offers medical care
from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Wednesday
and Friday; and limited hours on Saturday; closed Thursday and Sunday.
Evanston is also home to the Wyoming State Hospital, a facility built in 1887. Not only does
the facility house a great deal of history, it offers state of the art care for treatment,
rehabilitation, and recovery. It is the only state-operated psychiatric hospital in Wyoming, and
provides a full range of services and programs.
Besides the Wyoming State Hospital, Frontier Psychological and a number of other mental
health providers offer area residents top-rated mental health counseling as well as substance
abuse programs, and emergency mental health care.
In addition, Evanston has seen the success of an outpatient surgical center, and the recent
construction of a medical health services building, all of which complement services provided
by the hospital.
Also based in Evanston is Uinta County Public Health. This is a facility that offers a wide
variety of services to Uinta County residents, including education and awareness.
The mission of Uinta County Public Health is to protect and enhance the health and
wellbeing of Uinta County residents.
Some of the services offered include vaccinations, flu shots, diabetes education, and maternal
and family health education.
Public Health offers a variety of wellness classes and educational workshops and seminars
designed to keep the citizens of Uinta County healthy and disease free.
While Evanston is a small city, it boasts a host of medical resources that help residents
optimize their health and wellbeing.

Learning and life

E ducational opportunities offer the key
to life, not only in Evanston but also in any
size town. Residents of Evanston benefit from
a strong and well-structured educational
system all the way from early childhood
through adulthood.
Early childhood education begins with
numerous preschools and childcare centers in
the area.
These facilities work with children to develop the necessary
skills to be successful in school. They work with cognitive as well
as fine motor skills, socialization, and even health and fitness.
The public schools in the Uinta School District Number 1 rank
well state-wide for performance. And small class sizes ensure that
children receive the attention they need for optimal learning.
Kindergarten through high school, schools throughout Uinta
County offer stability as well as prime educational opportunities for
every student.
The development of a Boys and Girls Club in Evanston will
ensure that kids have a safe place to hang out after school, while
improving their grades and having fun.
And for those who find that traditional schooling is not an
option, Evanston offers Horizon High School, an alternative to
traditional high school. At Horizon, students gain real-world
experience while still completing their high school education. Horizon offers an
alternative that keeps students engaged, while working with their specific needs.
For post-secondary work, Evanston boasts a plethora of opportunity. Uinta
BOCES (Board of Cooperative Education Services) offers a variety of classes,
from GED to higher education to vocational services. Their goal is to educate,
empower and enrich students lives.
The Family Literacy Program works with families in areas like early
childhood education, adult education, parenting classes and adult literacy
classes. The program helps families succeed by giving them the skills they need.
In the vocational arena, BOCES offers safety training as well as industry-
specific job training.
In addition, BOCES offers a variety of degree programs including online opportunities
through Western Wyoming Community College, the University of Wyoming, Utah State
University and Western Governors University.
BOCES also provides a variety of community enrichment programs, including drivers
education, parenting skills, computer training, nutrition, and hunters safety.
Other community education opportunities abound at the University of Wyoming Cooperative
Extension Service. The extension program offers a unique variety of classes and workshops in
such diverse areas as agriculture, nutrition, food safety and preparation, master gardening and
rangeland management.
In addition, the extension service hosts the local 4-H group, which focuses on issues that
influence daily life. The 4-H program helps shape kids into responsible adults who contribute to
the wellbeing of the community.
For families from birth through adulthood, Evanston offers educational opportunities
that will expand every horizon.

Industry
The thrust behind the economy

E vanston is uniquely situated in southwest Wyoming to be a leader
in a multitude of industries. With an abundance of natural resources, wide-
open spaces, and close proximity to interstate highway and railroad
services, Evanston is at the heart of regional industrial and energy
development.
The Union Pacific Railroad has served an important part of Evanstons
development since the town was founded during the construction of the first
transcontinental railroad in the late 1800s. The city of Evanston has recently
purchased and is developing a rail spur, locally referred to as the Pioneer Oil
Site. Once developed, this site will provide rail tie-in service for local
industry.
Union Pacific maintains a presence in Evanston, with a crew of railroad and
track engineers who maintain and service the tracks and the signals in the region.
In addition, Evanston is home to Union Tank Car Company, a maintenance and
repair facility for oil tanker cars. Thousands of railroad tank cars are serviced and
repaired at the facility every year, and the shop is a major employer in Evanston.
While the railroad created a foundation for Evanston, the energy industry
solidified the community. Beginning in the 1980s with the discovery of oil and
natural gas in the region, Evanston quickly boomed. Although the intensity of the
energy industry has faded, there is still a solid base in Evanston.
Chevron, FMC Tech Completion Service, Anadarko Petroleum
Company, Urroz Oil & Gas, and Rock Mountain Power all maintain
energy-based operations in the Evanston and Uinta County area.
Oil, natural gas, and coal have suffered swings in production and
value, but continue to provide a steady industrial basis.
The southwest Wyoming region also boasts a steady stream of
renewable energy industry. Just east of Evanston, EMG-Mountain
Wind Power and Transalta-Wyoming Wind produce more than 144
megawatts of energy using a readily available resource: wind. The
wind turbine site puts the Evanston area and Uinta County at the forefront
of Wyomings burgeoning wind energy industry.
Another thriving industry located in Evanston is Elkhorn Holdings,
Inc., which maintains nine offices across the country, reaching from the
home office in Evanston to Montana, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Colorado
and New Mexico. Founded in 1984, Elkhorn now operates as a subsidiary
of John Wood Group PLC. This oil and gas related construction company
employs nearly 2,000 employees and builds gas compression stations, and
provides industrial and plant construction and maintenance solutions to the
oil, gas, power, and mining industries, as well as pipeline services.
Industrial development and growth in energy production in southwest Wyoming created a strong
foundation for growth in a variety of other sectors, including renewable energy. In addition to these
industries, Rain For Rent provides water for industrial purposes. These industries serve to anchor the
economy to allow for a broader development of technology in the future.

Agriculture
Maintaining a connection to the land

W hile the idea of a cowboy saddling up and riding out
at dawn to bring in a herd of cattle may seem a romantic
notion, in Evanston, Wyoming, it is a way of life.
The cowboy is alive and well in Uinta County. In this area,
hundreds of ranches and farms sustain a strong and viable
agricultural industry.
Agriculture in Uinta County isnt the industrialized
conglomerate giant that has taken over the mid-west. Here,
agriculture remains true to its roots.
Ranchers graze sheep across hundreds of acres, while
shepherds tend the flocks. More than 200 ranches in Uinta
County run beef cattle, and while much of the industry has
been modernized, cowboys still ride horses out here in the
west.
A number of guest ranches and dude ranches in the area
offer folks the opportunity to saddle up and ride, just like
during more pastoral times.
Diamond X Ventures and other guest
ranches offer a chance for everyone to
experience the thrills, frustrations and pains of
herding cattle, riding horses and living like a
cowboy.
Agriculture isnt just for the ranch kids in
Evanston. The Uinta County 4-H program
offers everyone the opportunity to experience
agriculture.
The annual Uinta County Fair gives
participants and residents a chance to showcase
their hard work and dedication for the entire
county to celebrate.
The Uinta County 4-H program even offers
kids a chance to raise their own livestock
with the Youth Agriculture Program.
That program was created to encourage
youth who might not have an opportunity to raise a chicken or a
rabbit, or even a calf. Participants use the Uinta County Fairgrounds
to raise their animals, while learning the proper way to care for and
raise an animal.
According to Youth Agriculture Program organizers, the program
offers kids a chance at responsibility as well as the satisfaction,
frustration and fun of raising animals, selling them and reaping the
rewards of their hard work.
Agriculture is deeply ingrained in the heart of Evanston and
Uinta County. Not only does agriculture contribute to the economy
of the area, it provides a deep cultural context for western living.

Fun and adventure await you in Evanston

R esidents of Evanston can enjoy recreational opportunities year-around.
Indoors and outdoors, there is something for everyone all year long.
As spring emerges from the cold grip of winter, Evanston offers an abundance
of activities to get you moving.
Beginning in January and running through May, the annual Uinta County
Concert Series features a troupe of musical and performance artists who present
world class music, classical performances, ballet and much more.
In March, residents and visitors can look forward to the annual Celtic Festival,
a celebration of Celtic Culture featuring Irish bands, food, crafts and culture,
sponsored by Young Musicians, Inc.
June is a busy month, beginning with the annual Renewal Ball. This fun event
is a must-see for anyone living in or visiting Evanston. Monies raised during the
event help finance restoration efforts of the historic downtown district. June is also the
start of the rodeo season in Evanston, with the Evanston Rodeo Series kicking off its
run.
June is also the month for the Beer, Brats and Bluegrass festival, a recent tradition
that highlights bluegrass music. This fun, family friendly event raises money to
continue support efforts for a school built in Africa, through the donations of money by
Evanston school children.
A 16-day meet at Wyoming Downs in Evanston, running from June 24-August 13,
will kick off the states racing year.
July in Evanston offers the kind of summer entertainment that people only imagine.
The fun begins on the Fourth of July, with the city sponsored Fresh Air, Freedom and Fun
festival. The event features local and regional bands, an historic chuck wagon dinner
prepared by the Evanston Rotary Club, and watermelon served by the city council.
Following the festival be sure to catch the best fireworks show in the west.
July also boasts the annual Evanston Brew Fest. This event offers local and regional
entertainment, as well as a large selection of micro-brew, and the popular Big Wheel
Races.
Summer draws to a close with the annual Roundhouse train festival, the Bear River
Mountain Man Rendezvous and the classic car show. These annual events signal the slowing
down of Evanston entertainment.
Labor Day marks the final hoorah for Evanstons summer activities with the annual
Cowboy Days, beginning on Friday night and lasting until Monday. Residents and visitors can
enjoy downtown activities on Friday night, followed by rodeos and family events on Saturday
and Sunday. On Labor Day, the Evanston Rotary Club hosts the annual pancake breakfast, just
before the start of the Labor Day parade.
If those activities arent enough, there are endless exciting options for recreation in the
beautiful mountains surrounding the Evanston area.
Fishing is always available on the Bear River and other local waterways. Those seeking a
more thrilling adventure can find rafting, canoeing, mountain biking, and camping only
minutes outside the city.
Or rent a canoe, paddle boat or paddle board and enjoy Evanstons Ice Ponds at the BEAR
Greenway.
World class hunting for elk, mule deer, antelope and more is available in the immediate area as well.
During the winter Evanston boasts a number of activities including snowmobiling, show shoeing
and skiing. Evanston is even one of the stops on the International Pedigree Stage stop Sled Dog Race,
one of the largest sled dog races in the lower 48 states. This race is run from Jackson, Wyo., to its final
destination in Evanston over the course of several days. World-class mushers and dog teams visit the
area in early January.
Exciting adventure awaits year around in Evanston and the surrounding area.

Making Evanston Home
A great place to live, work and play!

E vanston, Wyoming, is home to nearly 13,000
residents. Situated in the intermountain region of southwest
Wyoming just a few miles from Utah and near the Uinta
Mountain range the highest mountain range in the
contiguous United States running east to west the city
boasts a storied history matched only by the exceptional
living and recreational opportunities it claims in the present
day.
As grading crews for the Union Pacific Railroad
approached the site of present-day Evanston in November
1868, Harvey Booth recognized a business opportunity. He
pitched a tent with a wooden floor and canvas walls and
called it a saloon and restaurant. Within a few weeks, the
site became a frontier railroad camp with a population of
650. Soon, the railroad reached Evanston, and the town was
named after surveyor James A. Evans.
In 1870, Evanston became the Uinta County seat. Thanks
to abundant timber and fresh water from the Bear River, the 1871
establishment of a roundhouse and machine shops helped give the
town economic stability.
Evanston is a great place to call home. With a rich history and a
promising future, generations of people welcome you to this hidden
jewel in southwest Wyoming.
Geographically, Evanston is ideally situated less than an
hour from some of the greatest skiing in the entire world. In
addition, only a bit further down the valley, world class
shopping, dining and culture can be found in Salt Lake City.
Just a few miles to the south, the Uinta Mountains beckon
outdoor enthusiasts with the promise of hiking, fishing, hunting, skiing,
snowmobiling and just about any other outdoor activity that one might
desire.
Evanston boasts a rich history, from its humble beginnings as a railroad town, to
the historic China Town area, to the Lincoln Highway. This history gives Evanston
a rich tapestry of past stories, combined with ever unfolding experiences and
opportunities.
The city boasts recreational resources beyond compare, with the Bear River
State Park and the Bear River Greenway. These two parks offer a multitude of
recreation. In addition, Evanston is home to numerous educational, cultural and
social experiences.
The Strand Theater, previously a historic building downtown, is being recreated as
the Evanston Cultural Center and will offer residents and visitors many occasions to
enjoy plays, live music and various performances by local and regional artists.
