AGE PROBLEMS

1. Age of mother 10 years ago was 3 times the age of her son. After 10 years, mothers age will be twice that
of his son. Find the ratio of their present ages.
Solution:

age of mother 10 years ago was 3 times the age of her son
age of son be x and as mothers age is 3 times the age of her son, let it be 3x, three years ago.
At present: Mothers age will be (3x + 10) and sons age will be (x + 10)
After 10 years: Mothers age will be (3x + 10) +10 and sons age will be (x + 10) + 10
Mothers age is twice that of son
(3x + 10) +10 = 2 [(x + 10) + 10]
(3x + 20) = 2[x + 20]
Solving the equation, we get x = 20
(3x + 10) : (x + 10) = 70 : 30 = 7 : 3

2. Sharad is 60 years old and Santosh is 80 years old. How many years ago was the ratio of their ages
4 : 6?
Solution:
the ratio of their ages was 4 : 6
Let us assume x years ago
At present: Sharad is 60 years and Santosh is 80 years
x years ago: Sharads age = (60 x) and Santoshs age = (80 x)
Ratio of their ages x years ago was 4 : 6
(60 x) 4
=
(80 x) 6
6(60 x) = 4(80 x)
360 6x = 320 4x
x = 20
Therefore, 20 years ago, the ratio of their ages was 4 : 6

3.Father is 3 times more aged than his daughter. If after 5 years, he would be 3 times of daughters age, then
further after 5 years, how many times he would be of his daughters age?
Solution:
daughters age be x and fathers age be 3x.
Fathers age is 3 times more aged than his daughter, therefore fathers present age = x + 3x = 4x
After 5 years, fathers age is 3 times more than his daughter age.
(4x + 5) = 3 (x + 5)
(4x+5)=3 (x+5)
(4x + 5) = 3 (x + 5)
x = 10
After 5 years it was (4x + 5), then after further 5 years, fathers age = (4x +10) and daughters age = (x + 10)
(4x + 10)
=?
(x + 10)
Substitute the value of x, we get

[(4 10) + 10] 50

= = 2.5
[10 + 10] 20
After further 5 years, father will be 2.5 times of daughters age
4. Rahul is 15 years elder than Rohan. If 5 years ago, Rahul was 3 times as old as Rohan, then find Rahul's
present age?
Solution:
age of Rohan be y
Rahul is 15 years elder than Rohan = (y + 15). So Rahuls age 5 years ago = (y + 15 5)
Rohans age before 5 years = (y 5)
5 years ago, Rahul is 3 times as old as Rohan
(y + 15 5) = 3 (y 5)
(y + 10) = (3y 15)
2y = 25
y = 12.5
Rohans age = 12.5 years
Rahuls age = (y + 15) = (12.5 + 15) = 27.5 years

5. The ratio of Rohans age 4 years ago and Rahuls age after 4 years is 1 : 1. If at present, the
ratio of their ages is 5 : 3, then find the ratio between Rohans age 4 years hence and Rahuls
age 4 years ago
Solution:
At present: Ratio of their ages = 5 : 3. Therefore, 5 : 3 will be 5x and 3x.
Rohans age 4 years ago = 5x 4
Rahuls age after 4 years = 3x + 4
Ratio of Rohans age 4 years ago and Rahuls age after 4 years is 1 : 1
Therefore,

(5x 4) 1
=
(3x + 4) 1
Solving, we get x = 4

We are asked to find the ratio between Rohans age 4 years hence and Rahuls age 4yearsago
Rohans age : (5x + 4)
Rahuls age: (3x 4)
Ratio of Rahuls age and Rohans age

(5x + 4) 24 3
= = =3:1
(3x 4) 8 1

6 . 5 years ago, sisters age was 5 times the age of her brother and the sum of present ages of
sister and brother is 34 years. What will be the age of her brother after 6 years?
Solution:
present age of brother be x and sisters age be 34 x.

Past Age (5 Yrs Ago) Present Age Future Age (After 6 Yrs)
Brother (x 5) x (x + 6) = ?
Sister (34 x) - 5 (30 x)

We are given, 5 years ago sisters age was 5 times the age of her brother.
Therefore,
(34 x) 5 = 5 (x 5)
34 x 5 = 5x 25
5x + x = 34 5 +25
6x = 54
x=9
Future age (after 6 yrs) = (x + 6) = (9 + 6) = 15 years

7. Father is 3 times more aged than his daughter. If after 5 years, he would be 3 times of
daughters age, then further after 5 years, how many times he would be of his daughters age?
Solution:
Let daughters age be x and fathers age be 3x.
Fathers age is 3 times more aged than his daughter, therefore fathers present age = x + 3x = 4x
After 5 years, fathers age is 3 times more than his daughter age.
(4x + 5) = 3 (x + 5)
(4x+5)=3 (x+5)
(4x + 5) = 3 (x + 5)
x = 10

After 5 years it was (4x + 5), then after further 5 years, fathers age = (4x +10) and daughters age
= (x + 10)

(4x + 10)
=?
(x + 10)
Substitute the value of x, we get

[(4 10) + 10] 50

= = 2.5
[10 + 10] 20

After further 5 years, father will be 2.5 times of daughters age.

8.10 yr before, the ratio of ages of A and B was 13 : 17. After 17 yr from now, the ratio of their
ages will be 10 : 11. The present age of B is
Solution:
Let the ages of A and B 10 yr before were 13k yr and 17k yr, respectively.
Then, present age of A = 13k + 10
and present age of B = 17k + 10
According to the question,
(13k + 10 + 17) / (17k + 10 + 17) = 10/11

143k + 297 = 170k + 270

27k = 27
k=1
Hence, present age of B = 17 x 1 + 10 = 27 yr

9.The age of a man after 15 yr is 4 times the age of that man 15 yr before. His present age is ?
Solution:
Let present age of man be k yr.
According to the question,
k + 15 = 4(k - 15)
k - 15 = 4k - 60
3k = 75
k = 25
Hence, the present age of man is 25 yr.

10.The present ages of Sunil and Anil are 40 and 60 years respectively. How many years ago
was the ratio of their ages 3: 5?
Solution:
Let us assume x years ago, the ratio of their ages was 3 : 5,
(40 - x)/(60 - x) = 3/5
(40 - x) 5 = 3 (60 - x)
200 - 5x = 180 - 3x
2x = 20
x = 10 years
