Modeling the activities associated with integrating the core lean principle of
value into the LPS

HW2 Assignment activities and deliverables
Activity 1: Develop a checklist for ensuring that value is incorporated (or instrumented) into the
LPS design
Deliverable: Checklist ensuring that Value is incorporated into the LPS design
Activity 2: Develop an IDEF0 model of the activities required to incorporate value into the LPS
design
Deliverable: an IDEF0 model, fully documented; leverage your checklist from HW1 to guide your
development; I suggest using the model from the lecture notes as a start and then editing it accordingly or
create your own.
Activity 3: Develop an IDEF0 model to characterize the Lantech LPS from ch.6 of Lean Thinking.
***The purpose of the model should be to characterize how the value principle was applied by
Lantech in their LPS. For example, you might render a purpose statement like the following: The
purpose of this model is highlight how the value principle is manifested in the Lantech LPS. The
model depicts how the VOC is translated throughout the Lantech LPS ultimately resulting in the
satisfaction of demand back to the same customer. The customer has a need that is translated
into the functional requirements which are then satisfied through the actual product (shrink wrap
machine) but the customer also has requirements on the production system to in terms of the
delivery speed, quality, safety, and cost. Modeling how value manifests itself in the LPS is critical.
Deliverable: a fully documented IDEF0 model (A-0 and A0 diagrams are satisfactory); be sure to use your
checklist before submitting the model
