1. Amaravathi, the upcoming capital city of Andhra Pradesh, is located


on the southern banks of the Krishna river in Guntur district, within
the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region.

2. The word Amaravati derives its name from the historical Amaravathi
Temple town, the ancient capital of the Telugu Rulers of the Satava-
hana dynasty.

3. The foundation stone was laid on 22 October 2015, at Uddandarayuni-


palem was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a galaxy of
prominent personalities including Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu
Naidu.

4. The region was chosen since it is centrally located in Andhra Pradesh


state with major cities of Vijayawada and Guntur, as its suburbs.

5. The Andhra Pradesh Capital Region includes 30 villages belonging to


the three mandals - Thullur, Mangalagiri and Tadepalle.

6. Soil and water from 16,000 villages and from prominent pilgrim centres
all over the country were dropped over the capital region from the
helicopter by Chief Minister himself on the day before the inauguration.
The idea, he said was to promote a sense of belongingness among all
the people of the state, irrespective of their region within the state and
religion.

7. Sri Narendra Modi had brought water from the Yamuna River and
soil from Parliament Complex to be spread in the new capital. He
said, that Delhi will always stand and move shoulder to shoulder in
Andhras journey to touch newer heights.

8. Crowd funding of money for infrastructure of capital city was also or-
ganized, with various Governmental and non-Governmental Organiza-
tions pitching in. A non-resident Telugu Organization, Telugu Associ-
ation of North America is also raising funds for the development of the
city through the My Brick - My Amaravati campaign.

9. International Enterprise (IE) Singapore is the government agency co-


ordinating efforts across Singapores public and private sectors for the
master plan. It had earlier signed a Memorandum of Understanding
with the Amaravati Development Corporation Limited and Andhra
Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) to jointly
prepare master plan for the new capital. The MOU covered the master
planning of Amaravati and capacity development for AP officials. The
IE has submitted three master plans - the Capital Region Plan, Capital
City Master Plan and Seed Development Master Plan.

10. The planning was done by duly taking into account the principles of
Vastu and the design elements of heritage structures such as temples in
deference to Mr. Naidus wish to transform Amaravati into a city that
combines history with modernity.

11. Roads with 50, 24, 16, 9, and 7 metres width had been conceived with
waterways occupying the central axes of major roads for facilitating
water-borne transportation similar to the water taxis of Amsterdam.

12. Amaravati would have four prominent gateways that would bear re-
semblance to the entrance of historic temples.

13. It will be Indias first planned capital city to come up from scratch in
decades. It has already become Indias largest experiment in a process
known as land pooling, which is being held up as an alternative to land
acquisition.

14. Under the Amaravati Land Pooling Scheme (LPS), the most crucial
part of the capital building project, about 33,733 acres has been pooled
from the farmers voluntarily.

15. The state government has promised compensation in return with com-
mercial land post the completion of capital, besides an annual compen-
sation, loan waiver and government jobs to the local youth.
