Swine influenza:
India on alert

S wine influenza is a contagious respiratory disease that

normally only affects pigs. It is commonly caused by
H1N1 strains of swine influenza A virus. However, other
strains, such as H1N2, H3N1 and H3N2 also circulate in pigs.
While it is not usual for people to get swine flu, human infections
do occasionally happen, mainly after close contact with infected
pigs.

During March/April 2009, a new strain of swine influenza

virus emerged in Mexico, and started to cause illness in humans.
The World Health Organisation says that this new strain of
influenza, called influenza A (H1N1), can spread from person to
person. Experts around the world are working closely with the
World Health Organisation to help determine what risk this
virus poses to the public. When people are infected with swine

Rise of women
in different spheres
“WHY can't a woman be more like a man?” mused Henry Higgins in “My Fair Lady”. Future generations might ask
why a man can't be more like a woman. In rich countries, girls now do better at school than boys, more women are
getting university degrees than men are and females are filling most new jobs. Arguably, women are now the most
powerful engine of global growth.

T hroughout the world, women face

obstacles for their participation in
politics. These barriers exist in
prevailing social and economic systems, as well
as in existing political structures. In 2007, the
rate of female representation at national level
stands at merely 18 per cent globally. Although
this figure has increased in recent years,
minimal progress has been made, meaning that
the ideal of parity between men and women in
national legislatures still remains distant.

The International Institute for Democracy

and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) is committed
to providing comparative information and
research on how to overcome these obstacles
and to advance gender and democracy issues in
general, and to promote the participation and
representation of women in political world in
particular.

population is reported as literate: 87 percent of men and 77
percent of all women. But there still exists a gap of 10 percent
between women's literacy rates and those of men. In some
regions of the world, this gap is more than 25 percent.

Organisations need to be more accommodating to

women: Organizations have to reduce barriers that favour men
over women. Companies have been grappling for years with ways
of keeping women in their firms. The Ernst & Young report says
that companies must plan for it and put mentoring programs in
place in order to make sure that women will get promoted and
climb the career ladder. It is also essential that they work actively
to ensure a comfortable environment and healthy work-life
balance for all employees.

Change in attitudes: It is perhaps a cliché, but still the

discussion would be incomplete unless we point out that both
men and women, and society in general, must have a more open
and inclusive understanding of the role of women. Many a time,
even well-qualified women shy away from talking about their
accomplishments or putting them to use in the public sphere
because of societal norms, where immodesty is frowned upon.
