The

Distributive Property

Notes
The Distributive Property
The Distributive Property: multiplying a number
by a group of numbers added together is the same
as doing each multiplication separately and adding
the products.

a(b + c) = a(b) + a(c)

7(3 + 5) = 7(3) + 7(5)

Example
Rewrite the following expressions using the
Distributive Property. Then simplify the
expression.
6(2 8)

6(2 8) = 6(2) 6(8)

12 48

12 + -(48)

-36

Example
Is (5 4) + (5 7) the same as 5(4 + 7)?

Prove it.

(5 4) + (5 7)

20 + 35

55

5(4 + 7)
5(11)
Example
Rewrite the following expression using the
distributive property, and then simplify:
1.5(3 + 2.5 10)

1.5(3) + 1.5(2.5) 1.5(10)

4.5 + 3.75 15

8.25 15
8.25 + -15
-6.75
Algebraic Expressions
Numerical Expression: an expression consisting of
numbers and operations.

Algebraic Expression: a mathematic statement that
combines numbers, operation signs, and variables.

Algebraic Terms
Constant: a quantity having a fixed value that does
not change, such as a number. (ex: 2)
Variable: a letter used to represent one or more
numbers. (ex: x)
Coefficient: the numerical factor of a term containing
a variable. (ex: the 3 in 3x)

3x + 2

Algebraic Expressions
Rewrite the expression using the distributive
property, and simplify:

3(4x + 2)

3(4x) + 3(2)

12x + 6
